Walking Humbly with God
When I am tempted to exaggerate my own importance, over-value my opinion or praise my own
work, I remember something my mentor and hero Bishop Raymond Lucker would say. On more than
one occasion he commented that it was a constant struggle for him to
remember that we can neither merit nor win God’s love by working harder
than those around us, by behaving better than our neighbors or noticing
our own virtue in comparison to others. He said, “I constantly remind
myself that God will not love me any more or any less if I go back to my
office after supper.” Although this reality is not always agreeable to our
sense of justice or fairness, God loves us completely no matter what we
do. He made us for his love, and our response to that love will bring us
happiness. It will also make us humble in our own estimation. As we stand
before the perfection of God’s knowledge, love, compassion, patience and
grandeur, we should be overcome with humility and recognition of our
own weakness and smallness in the face of such wonder.
Today’s Gospel tries to help us learn this simple lesson: Before God we have no reason to be proud.
When we draw near to God we are all too clearly reminded that we are weak creatures and that we
have sinned. We have failed in living the life he wants for us. The goodness, glory and light of God
illuminate our obvious faults and clear weaknesses. Our response to that pure goodness can be
frightening, and we cry out to our loving God for mercy and compassion.
The great danger of pride in the presence of God is that it can make us ignorant of our need for his
presence, his power, his understanding, compassion and assistance in our lives. God so respects our
freedom, that although he knows us to the very core of our being, and although he knows well our
needs before we cry out, he will only enter our lives and our struggles when we invite him to do so. If
I stand before God full of pride at my own accomplishment and proud of my own virtue and blind to
my need, God will respect my decision to puff myself up before him. The result, and in the end the
punishment for my pride, is that I will not be able to receive his merciful compassion and love. I am
too blinded by my own shadowy glory to be enveloped with the true glory of God.
We sometimes find consolation in separating ourselves from our brothers and sisters, by making
ourselves examples of faithfulness and virtue, but the life of pride can be sadly bitter, lonely and
isolating. For a time we can feel very good being the only and most perfect humans in the world, but
our self-congratulations ring hollow in our ears. It is difficult to accept the reality of who we are, but
our acceptance of our human frailty and our recognition of our need for the mercy and power of God
will unite us with our neighbors who struggle with the same problems. When we recognize our need
for the embrace of God’s mercy our lives become easier and much happier. An honest evaluation of
our lives may humble us, but our souls can then fly to the joy of knowing that God pardons us, loves
us and will give us strength.

Message from your Grand Knight
Dear Brother Knights,
Recently there has been some horrific tragedies in “safe” central Minnesota. Please pray for the young family from
Watertown that was killed in a house fire, for the young girl from Watkins that was abducted and killed, and for the
seven people that were attacked in the St. Cloud shopping mall. Also, please pray for the Wetterling family, from St.
Joseph, as they put their son to rest.
Thank you to Craig and Shari Remer for hosting the Rural Life Mass. The music, sermon, and food were very good. The
Remer’s did a fine job at controlling the mosquitos. It was nice to see everyone on such a beautiful evening.
Please welcome Joseph Hartung to our council. He will be making his 1st Degree soon.
Each year our council donates money to the RSVP program to help a young man defray some of the cost to becoming a
priest. This year we will be donating to Evan Huebl from Jordan, MN.
The 2nd collection, at this weekend’s masses, will be for the KC Marathon for Non-Public Education.
Our “Pork Chop Feed” is Saturday, October 8th from 4-7 p.m. Please contact Roman Widmer at 612-483-5766 if you can
help or bring a dessert.
The KC Marathon is October 13th. Please let me know if you can help at a water station for the students, or as a road
guard.
Our council’s Inside Guard, Chris Condon, is moving out of the area. If you are interested in becoming the Inside Guard,
please let me know. We will be filling this officer position in October.

effort to be there.
THE RE CONNECTION:
Don’t you just love those occasional moments in prayer when you
can just feel the heavenly consolation surrounding you? Y’all maybe
are much better pray-ers than this kat, ‘cuz boy, aridity seems to like
to hang on way too long sometimes. (It’s not for a lack of trying, but
welcome to the Death Valley that can be my prayer life!) That is
what is so cool about our AFC Living Rosary this weekend. Having
been blessed with being able to participate in this beautiful gathering
for years, in spite of having to miss Vikings’ games because of it,
being able to look forward to hearing so many solitary voices joining
together, even in different languages, making an appeal to our most
Blessed Mother for her intercession, seems to always drown out any
dryness and helps the ‘ol soul swim in a veritable river of love.
(Good grief, the next thing you know I’ll break into a little
“Kumbaya”! Sorry about that!) But if you are perhaps goin’ through
one of those rough patches in your own prayer life, drop on by
St. Pius X at 1:30 p.m. this Sunday, October 23, 2016, and this
smooth Marian groove may just cure what’s ailin’ ya!
RE CLASSES RESUME THIS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26,
2016. 
ALB WASHERS NEEDED: We have always been proud of the
excellent service that our servers provide at our liturgies. Visitors
often comment on how well our servers do and how nice they look in
performing their ministry. To keep our servers looking appropriately
reverent, we are in need of some volunteers to periodically wash their
albs. If you are willing to help in this important ministry and want
more information, please contact Fr. Tony. If we have six volunteers
you would be asked to launder the soiled albs twice a year. Please
consider helping in this important ministry.
FLOWER CARE VOLUNTEERS: Flower care volunteers are
needed to help keep the plants we use in church looking beautiful and
fresh. Volunteers are scheduled on a weekly basis. We currently
have 2 volunteers and would like to have another so each person has
one week a month. Please contact the parish office for more
information.

YEAR OF MERCY AFTERNOON OF REFLECTION: On
Saturday, October 29, in the lower level of the Church of the Holy
Family, Fr. Tony will guide an afternoon of reflection entitled, “The
End of the Jubilee Year, Not the End of Mercy.” We will begin at
1:00 p.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m. We hope to see you there. This
is a continuation of our celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy,
which will conclude on November 20.
PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY 2016: The USA Council of SERRA
International has chosen, Sunday, October 30, as a day to honor our
priests. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood
in the life of the Church as a central one. Our priests play an
indispensable yet mysterious role in mediating the sacred, of
witnessing to the extraordinary in the special, yet ordinary moments
of everyday life. How often do we really get to know our priests, and
how often do we thank them for all they give us? Without the
priesthood, there would be no Eucharist, and without the Eucharist,
there would be no Catholic Church. Let us remember to say thank
you our priests often for all they do for us, and especially let us
remember to pray for them every day!
THANK YOU for your generous response to the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith last weekend on World Mission Sunday.
While some go to serve in other countries to develop the Church and
serve its people, all of us are called to pray and support the Missions
from right where we live. To continue answering this call, download
the Missio App which makes it possible for you to meet and support
religious Sisters and Brothers, priests and dedicated Lay Leaders who
provide help and hope in some of the world’s poorest places. These
missionaries provide essential education and health care, social
outreach and advocacy, and pastoral service. They address basic
human needs, while in every moment offering spiritual comfort and
support to the suffering and the marginalized. Join them in mission
every day as you joined them this past World Mission Sunday!
EVANGELIZATION CORNER:
What’s in your heart?
The Pharisee in the gospel story this weekend thought that if he said
his prayers, gave his regular donation, and followed the fasting laws,
he would be right with God. Pray, pay, and obey, as some in the
church once put it. The tax collector, however, could only offer one
thing: himself. He presented himself just as he was and hoped in the
mercy of God. It is a big temptation to believe that being a member
of the church is all about loyalty and not inner conversion. I know
that I have fallen into that trap myself. Have you ever fallen into it?
Our lives are not static and immovable. They are to be vibrant and
joy-giving; using all the grace that God has given us to fall again and
again in love with Him and our neighbor. Sounds easy to say, and it
is truly the reality of our relationship with God. God speaks to our
heart daily and desires to call each of us every moment of the day
into a deeper relationship with Him. Fish don't swim on the surface of
the water but constantly swim deeper and deeper into the water and
around to see the sights. They don't sink, they swim almost
unceasingly! This week, let's desire to swim deeper and deeper into
our relationship with God...and tell someone how refreshing the
water is!
