COURSE CALENDAR
We offer a friendly and stimulating environment to help you gain confidence
in using French. We place an emphasis on communication, both oral
and written, which is achieved through active student participation. All
language classes are conducted in French and are designed to develop
comprehension, pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary, grammar, written
expression and conversational ability.
FALL 2006: September 18 – December 2 / 10 week session
DECEMBER 2006: December 4 – December 14 / 2 week session
WINTER 2007: January 8 – March 17 / 10 week session
SPRING 2007: March 26 – June 9 / 10 week session
After completing three successive levels in a row, we strongly
recommend that you take a brush-up class in order to consolidate
your grammatical knowledge through oral expression.
CURRICULUM: WHAT YOU WILL LEARN …
FRENCH LANGUAGE CLASSES WITH FORUM
Forum is a highly interactive method that requires additional oral activities
in class. This method offers you new concepts, new ways of learning and,
of course, new opportunities for immersion in the French and Francophone
world. Students know in advance the programming of each class, as all
teachers’ activities are indicated in the student textbook. One book covers
all nine levels. The book and its companion CD are available for purchase
in our office. In addition, at the end of each session, students receive
a final evaluation to rate their communicative skills: oral and written
expression, comprehension, and use of lexical and stylistic structures. Then
students receive a personal and accurate evaluation from their instructor.
In this way, each student knows the progress he/she has made and
exactly which course to take next.
PLACEMENT TESTS
If this is your first class at the Alliance Française, you should request a FREE
placement test by an instructor during registration week (see page 10 for
details). In addition, a teacher will assess your level during the first class of
the session to ensure that you are in the proper level.
At the Alliance Française de Chicago, you not only learn
French, you learn how to do things in French through practical
use of the language.
For more information concerning our classes and curriculum, please
contact Maryellen Langhout at [email protected]

Celebrate Bastille Day Mediterranean Style — Saturday, July 8
Ingredients from the south of France infuse this menu with the flavors of
summer. We retain the fresh taste of olives, garlic, basil and goat cheese by
keeping cooking to a minimum. That's revolutionary! It's also simple and
elegant: Tapenade tartine; Grilled sea scallops with pesto; Banon and mesclun
salad; Olive oil cake with summer fruit garnish. Attendees are invited to tie on
an apron and join in the preparation.
Summer Salad Supper — Saturday, July 22
This menu is designed with the cook in mind. All recipes are "do-ahead" and
assembled at the last minute. They look and taste spectacular because we
emphasize the art of presentation and attention to basic techniques to bring
out flavor. Join the interactive class preparation of: Eggplant caviar appetizer;
Salade Niçoise; Red fruit compote with fromage blanc; Goat cheese cookies.
Easy Summer Pique-nique — Saturday, August 12
Skip the utensils, you can pack light for this party. We're making finger food for
relaxed dining en plein air. We'll concentrate on finding the best ingredients and
using basic French techniques to preserve fresh flavor. Come join this interactive
preparation of: Marinated green olives; Deviled eggs; Stuffed tomatoes; Pan
Bagna; Caramel pine nut tartlettes.

French sounds beautiful but it’s difficult for you to understand? The French
that you hear on the street, on TV or in conversations differs from the French
you have studied? This course will help you to better understand spoken
French by analyzing its sounds, its intonation patterns, its regional accents,
its formal and colloquial forms. We will use a variety of materials (dialogues,
television and radio programs, films and songs) about different facets of
the French way of life. You will improve your comprehension, pronunciation,
intonation, vocabulary and oral expression through practical exercises and
group activities. As French Poet Paul Valéry said: “Parler est un besoin,
écouter est un art!” Come improve the art of listening!

There are so many exceptions and subtleties in the French language: the articles,
prepositions, pronouns and tenses. Let’s put an end to these confusing aspects
of French grammar by working on basic grammatical rules and consolidating
them through conversation. Grammar will be tackled in its functional aspects
and its contextual use to better facilitate communication. We will use these
structures from texts about international current affairs and French people’s
everyday lives. This course will allow you to use proper idiomatic and stylistic
expressions. An exceptional class focused on French exceptions for exceptional
people… C’est exceptionnel, non ?!

Feeling rusty? Refresh your knowledge of French by reviewing all the tenses
from present to subjunctive and conditional, the direct, indirect, en and y
pronouns and the relative pronouns qui, que, où, dont, etc. You will tackle
topics, such as the media, gastronomy, health, leisure activities (cinema,
literature, traveling and arts) and social issues (cultural differences, criminality,
and human rights), which will lead to class debates and group discussions.

You have good grammatical knowledge but you are not confident in speaking
French in public for fear of not being understood or not using the right word?
This course will allow you to make a step from theoretical knowledge to
practical use of the language. Through monologues and scenarios, improvised
or prepared in advance, work presentations, readings, tape recordings, roleplaying, discussions in small groups and class debates, you will express your
opinions about current affairs and topical subjects. The objective of this course is
to reduce your inhibitions and give you confidence in your speaking abilities!

After learning French for a while, you've probably found that there are some
things you just can't figure out how to say, or that people are always correcting
you on. These may be words or phrases that you haven't been taught yet,
or concepts that you've studied but found difficult to assimilate. There is
still plenty of time to fix these mistakes before they fossilize in your mind.
Here are ten examples of common French mistakes we will analyze in class:
« Actuellement, je me suis déjà regardé cet film sur la télé et je sais le caractère
principal. J’adore aussi le directeur ! C’est bon ! J’ai attendu un cours de
cinéma dans l’université. » This grammar review class will help you to perfect
your French by analyzing grammatical structures such as il est / c’est, reflexive
and non-reflexive verbs, adjectives, adverbs, tenses, vocabulary such as les vrais
et faux amis attendre and assister, etc. Come and acquire new automatisms to
think and speak with efficiency en français… Adieu le franglais !!!

In order to understand the nuances of the vocabulary of a foreign language,
memorizing words or lists of vocabulary is not sufficient; it is more important
to first understand and assimilate their practical use in real life situations.
Each class will address a topic and vocabulary associated with it. Terms and
expressions will be introduced in a dialogue, then students will have to create
their own in order to master and appropriately use the new vocabulary. If you
are always “struggling” to find the right word, this is the right class for you!

A retrospective of 100 years of French songs will help you visualize a
fascinating portrait of 20th Century France. We’ll study how songs (one of the
most popular forms of entertainment) can function as:
• a commentary on society and politics
• a morale booster during dark periods
• an art form which has rejuvenated poetry and transcends our lives
We shall listen to and discuss the most significant songs of each decade:
you’ll recognize some of your favorite singers — Chevalier, Piaf, Aznavour,
Brel, to name a few — and discover many more. We shall also honor the
performers who have fought for democracy and justice and those involved
in humanitarian causes, such as Francis Cabrel, Michel Jonasz, Maurane,
etc. A special tribute will go to Josephine Baker whose birthday and life
accomplishments are being celebrated all over France.
