The 1971 Mach I belonging to longtime Club Member Joe Gorman (until relocating to Dayton, OH) was recently featured in the Fan
Spotlight section of Fast News From Ford Performance e-newsletter...
Joe Gorman of Dayton, OH, Reveals His Pride & Joy: Restored 1971 Mustang Mach 1 and 1991 Mustang GT
When most Baby Boomers tell you about their “Pride & Joy,” it usually involves talk about their children or their grandchildren. But for
Ford fan Joe Gorman of Dayton, OH, it’s a matter of Mustangs. Below Joe tells us why he has a sense of pride in the restoration of his
’71 and finds joy with his ’91:
“I'm not going to claim to be the most hard-core, die-hard Ford fan in the world – but I’m close. My Ford life started with a 1969 Mach 1
that I bought at the age of 16 and drove it until I got out of college at age 22. I kept it for another two years. I later bought a 1979
Ford Bronco as my primary car. I sold my Mach only because I did not have the money to have two vehicles for one driver. In 1983 I
bought my first new car – a 1983 GT Dominator Mustang from a Ford dealer in Lee’s Summit, MO. I drove it until I got married in 1985
and then switched back to a new Bronco.
“I sold the 1985 Bronco in 1992 so that I could buy and start restoring the 1971 Mach 1 that you see here. Since that time I've owned
plenty of Fords, including a 1992 Eddie Bauer Bronco, 2001 Eddie Bauer Expedition, an Explorer Sport, a Cougar XR-7 and a Taurus
SHO. Unfortunately, there also have been some non-Ford vehicles in my life, but they have been my wife’s cars.
“The 1971 has been with me since April of1992, and needed work the day I got it. It was running on only 7 of its 8 eight cylinders when I
brought it home. You couldn’t set foot on the passenger-side floorboard without your feet touching the ground, and nothing could go in
the trunk because the inside lower-quarters were missing. My neighbor, Ronnie Sales, helped me tear the car down, weld-in new sheet metal, pull the motor and have it rebuilt, and finally put it all back together – all in my back yard.
“You see, my neighbor worked for a local Ford dealer, and undisclosed amount of money allowed us to bring the car down to the dealership on a late Friday night, prime it, paint it and bake it in their paint booth. The car was done by Sunday night and was towed back to my
house for final assembly by mid-1993.
“The Dark Ivy Green Metallic is the car’s original color, along with the silver accents. (FYI: The hockey stripe, the Magnum wheels and the
Argent color spoilers front and rear are incorrect, and I know it.) My ’71 has been in numerous shows in the Kansas City, MO, area. In the
late 1990’s I had rust appearing on my door pinch welds, and a second paint job was done. Cook’s Collision in Kearney, MO, did the
paint and bodywork, also finding some structural frame rust that caused some fabrication work to be done on the front frame rail. The car
was completed and back on the street within a year. My Mach 1 stayed in KCMO area until June of 2014 when I moved to Dayton, Ohio.
“My 1971 is not a championship show car – as much as I’ve already done on it, it still needs work. But it won a Silver Award at the MCA
2015 Grand Nationals show, where I got to make a new friend at Ford Performance. The 1971 does have a partner in my garage, a
1991 Mustang GT, which I enjoy driving. Both cars had to be restored, but they are my pride and joy!”

Mustang Club of America's 40th Anniversary Date is set!
Indianapolis Motor Speedway will open its doors to host the Mustang Club of America's 40th Anniversary Celebration. This event will give attendees the opportunity of visiting one of the most iconic race tracks in the world, drive their
special vehicle on the track and visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, plus additional activities in the planning
stages. Due to the many requests, MCA is working on attempting the Guinness World Record for Mustangs in a
cruise. The initial plans are to leave the track on Friday late afternoon and cruise to the Lucas Oil Raceway, approximately 6 miles away. More information to come. To keep up with 40th Anniversary information please follow the mustang.org website, Mustang Times and the weekly MCA Mustang Express.
