Activities and Programs for Older Adults
Brain-a-thon Challenge
March, April, May 2016 Edition
For 40 years, Southwest Center has been serving area seniors. To celebrate
this milestone and to raise money so that we can continue our mission, we
are hosting two fundraisers. On April 7, we will be hosting an evening event,
“April in Paris”. We are seeking sponsors and donations for our silent
auction. To date, we have secured two sponsors who are donating $5,000 and
$2,500. We are working hard on the others. If you know of anyone who would
like to be a sponsor at the $500, $1,500, $2,500 or $5,000 level, please let me
know. Also, if you have a good connection with any local businesses that you
think would like to donate to our Silent Auction, please contact me. Tickets
for the April 7 event are $50 each and include a social hour and dinner. If
you’d like to attend, please contact me ASAP, as we anticipate that tickets
will sell out quickly. In addition, we are looking for volunteers who can help
that evening with greeting people, serving, and the Silent Auction. Please let
me know if you would like to help with any of these volunteer jobs.
In order to make sure that everyone can participate in the celebration, we will
be having an additional fundraiser on May 13th. We will start with a special
staff cooked meal (recommended donation of $4) followed by a party. The
recommended donation for this party fundraiser is $15 and you should get
your ticket ahead of time from the front desk. If you are unable to donate the
recommended amount, please donate what you can to Robbie. Of course, if
you are able to donate more, we would certainly appreciate that.
The Brain-a-thon Kick-off on Wednesday, March 9 will get us ready
for a couple of months of focusing on the health of our brains.
Please sign up for a delicious staff cooked meal for the Kick-off and
then join us for programs that will help you use your brains in new
ways and encourage you to move your body. You can pick up a full
listing of all the Brain-a-thon events at the front desk and learn how you
can earn points and win prizes for engaging in activities that are brain healthy.

QUESTION: Recently I have received
several pre-recorded phone messages
stating the caller is the Internal Revenue
Service (IRS) and that I am being sued by
the IRS and must call immediately to
resolve the problem. Could this be a
scam?
ANSWER: A longtime AARP tax volunteer
at Southwest Center indicates that this is
indeed a scam call. If the IRS is attempting
to contact you they do so by US mail, not
telephone. Recently I have met with
several clients about scams that they have
unwittingly become a victim of. Each
began with either an unsolicited phone call
or email. Several began as “prize
winnings” and another started as an
opportunity to earn extra money by working
on mailings.
Hang up on unsolicited callers if they seem
suspicious. Delete suspicious emails. Do
not be pressured to make an immediate
decision. Remember, if an offer seems too
good to be true, it probably is.
