Cohda Wireless CEO talks exclusively to Telematics News
about the future of V2X
Paul Gray, CEO of Cohda Wireless, gives TN insight into supplying the V2X tech for GM
Cadillac and the relative benefits of DSRC and LTE.
Can you talk us through a typical day at Cohda? How has your role and the company changed since you
moved from VP Engineering to the CEO position?
Typical days at Cohda are always busy. Since Delphi awarded the project to Cohda to supply all the V2X software for the
GM Cadillac-CTS, a large portion of the engineering team has been working hard to ensure that all of GM’s stringent
requirements are met. Meanwhile there are several Tier One V2X development projects to be supported, and equipment
to be delivered to Road Authorities for V2X trials around the world – this keeps both our development and testing teams
busy. Our R&D team is focused on tracking international V2X standards and innovating to maintain our competitive edge.
When I was VP Engineering the company only had 10 employees and I was focused on product development. Today
Cohda has 40 employees and has offices in Adelaide, Detroit, and Munich and I take a broader view. As does any CEO of
a SME I spend time focusing on the near term finances of the company, but I also spend a good amount of time on Cohda’s
strategic direction and creating value for our shareholders.
Recently Cohda demonstrated the V2X-Radar concept on the streets of Adelaide, Australia. What is the
thinking behind this concept? How does it differ from “traditional” V2X technology?
V2X-Radar is simply software that runs on top of a “traditional” V2X system, transforming it into a 360 degree radar
system that can detect buildings, road signs, and even older, unequipped vehicles. When V2X signals propagate between
two vehicles or between roadside infrastructure and a vehicle they bounce off of all the objects present around the
vehicle. The V2X-Radar software in the receiving vehicle uses these V2X signals themselves - without modification – to
pinpoint the location of all of these objects. V2X-Radar can even detect unequipped vehicles around corners and is
unaffected by rain, snow, or fog. The ability to detect unequipped vehicles can transform the business case for V2X
deployment.
There appears to be two flavours of V2X emerging - DSRC and LTE. How do you view the relative
strengths/weaknesses of these two?
Technically there is little difference between DSRC and LTE. The key difference is that the V2X community has already
spent a decade developing DSRC – standards have been published to ensure that all the required functionality is present,
large international trials have been conducted to demonstrate that safety benefits can be delivered as predicted,
interoperability testing has been undertaken to ensure that equipment from different vendors work with each other, and
now certification programs are being developed to ensure that deployments proceed smoothly. Despite the press that
LTE has received, it is at the very beginning of all this, and it will take another decade before LTE has reached the same
maturity as DSRC for V2X.
Will V2X only be used for safety applications? Or are driver information and entertainment services also
emerging using this technology?
On the other hand, LTE is a very mature technology for providing internet connectivity, and is very good at doing this.
Modern vehicles will have two systems – and LTE-based infotainment sub-system for delivering driver information and
entertainment services, and a DSRC-based V2X sub-system for delivering safety. The infotainment sub-system will be
built to a price, and the V2X sub-system will be built to a standard.

How is Cohda positioning itself in this space? Are you looking to be a hardware supplier or technology
licensing company? How are you involved in promoting deployment?
In the nascent market Cohda needed to provide complete systems. However, as the market grows and matures Cohda
will move away from being a hardware supplier to become a software licensing company. This is evidenced by our recent
announcements with both u-blox (who will license our V2X module) and Siemens (who we will be supplying road side units
to). We promote deployment by helping to build better and better business cases for deployment.
Can you give us some predictions for the implementation of V2X? When will the first systems become
available? What will they look like? Which countries will be first to deploy? Will V2V happen first, with V2X
waiting for government support?
GM will be the first car maker to have a V2X system in a production vehicle, with their CTS Cadillac going into production
at the end of 2016. Meanwhile in Europe, the Corridor Project will ensure that there is infrastructure in place for the early
adopters. Deployment work is happening in parallel in the both the US and Europe, so it will be difficult to pinpoint
exactly who deploys first – and even then there will only be months in it.

Can the Threat be Mitigated?
Mobile connectivity has enabled the creation of
innovative vehicle features. However, it has also
catapulted OEMs into a whole new threat
landscape in the form of remote hackers.
This report demonstrates that there are

alliance to create an integrated

autonomous vehicles in the U.S.

Toyota announced its next-generation connected vehicle framework
at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada,
accelerating its initiatives to provide its customers with greater
convenience and increased data security. The framework builds on
advances in automobile, IT, and communications systems to enhance
Toyota vehicles with connected technologies.
GM will invest $500 million in Lyft to help
the company continue the rapid growth of
its successful ridesharing service. In
addition, GM will hold a seat on the
company’s board of directors.
“We see the future of personal mobility as
connected, seamless and autonomous,”
said GM President Dan Ammann. “With
GM and Lyft working together, we believe
we can successfully implement this vision
more rapidly.”
John Zimmer, president and co-founder of
Lyft, said: “Working with GM, Lyft will
continue to unlock new transportation
experiences that bring positive change to
our daily lives. Together we will build a
better future by redefining traditional car
ownership.”
Key elements of the GM and Lyft alliance
include:
Autonomous On-Demand Network: The
joint development of a network of ondemand autonomous vehicles will leverage
GM’s deep knowledge of autonomous
technology and Lyft’s capabilities in
providing a broad choice of ride-sharing
services.
Rental Hub: Beginning immediately, GM
will become a preferred provider of shortterm use vehicles to Lyft drivers through
rental hubs in various cities in the U.S.
Connectivity: Lyft drivers and customers
will have access to GM’s wide portfolio of
cars and OnStar services, leveraging two
decades of experience in connectivity. This
will create a richer ride-sharing experience
for both driver and passenger.
Joint Mobility Offerings: GM and Lyft will
also provide each other’s customers with
personalized
mobility
services
and
experiences through their respective
channels.

Toyota’s connected vehicle framework is
anchored by the installation of a Data
Communication Module (DCM) into a
broader range of its vehicles starting with
model changes in 2017 in the U.S.
market. Availability will expand to
additional regions and countries following
the U.S. Adding DCM will connect
Toyota
vehicles
to
cellular
telecommunications networks, expanding
the ability to transmit data for products
and services.
For vehicles equipped with DCM, Toyota
will also provide emergency notification
system as a standard feature, which is
activated by airbag deployment during a
traffic accident and supports prompt
initial response in an emergency.
To build the IT infrastructure needed to
support this significant expansion of
vehicle data processing, the company will
create a Toyota Big Data Center (TBDC)
in the Toyota Smart Center. TBDC will
analyze and process data collected by
DCM, and use it to deploy services under
high-level information security and
privacy controls.
Toyota will also develop a globally
uniform DCM by 2019. DCMs are
currently different depending on the
region and country, but will become a
standardized architecture. The company
will also, in the Toyota Smart Center,
create a function to globally consolidate
its DCM communications.
At the same time, when using a
customer’s smartphone with an in-car
device, it is very important to help

transmission of vehicle and customer
information in a secure manner. Toyota
will jointly develop standard middleware
with UIEvolution, Inc. (UIE), one of the
leading companies in this area, for
application to Toyota’s in-car devices
globally.
With this business collaboration, UIE can
develop a smartphone app which uses
vehicle data and provides it to third party
service and app providers authorized by
Toyota with UIE’s service environments.
It enables a customer’s smartphone to
access vehicle data in a highly secure
environment through TBDC and Toyota
can offer its customers safe and secure
smartphone-car connection services.
Mirai Creation Investment Limited
Partnership, a fund where Toyota
participates as an investor, invested five
million U.S. Dollars in UIE at the end of
last year.

Volvo owners can use Microsoft
Band 2 to control On Call
Subaru names Magellan as Cloud
navigation partner
Volvo and Microsoft are launching a wearableenabled voice control system. Volvo owners will be
able to talk to their car via their Microsoft Band 2,
allowing them to instruct their vehicle to perform
tasks including setting the navigation, starting the
heater, locking the doors, flashing the lights or
sounding the horn via Volvo’s mobile app Volvo on
Call and the connected wearable device.
Magellan’s SmartGPS navigation has been selected
to be included with Subaru vehicles featuring the
SUBARU STARLINK platform.
In November 2015 Volvo and Microsoft announced their highprofile collaboration with the first automotive application of
HoloLens technology. HoloLens is the world’s first fully
untethered holographic computer, which could be used in future
to redefine how customers first encounter, explore and even
buy car. Now the two companies are delivering remote voice
control for Volvo cars via the Microsoft Band 2 as another
proof-point in their ambition to jointly develop next generation
automotive technologies.
“Volvo is intent on making the car experience as easy and
convenient as possible by utilising the latest technology in the
most relevant and inspiring ways. With voice control we are only
just beginning to scratch the surface of what is possible with
digital assistant functionalities,” said Thomas M. Müller, Vice
President Electrics/ Electronics & Chassis at Volvo Car Group.
In recent times Volvo Cars’ has begun to focus closely on
innovations outside the traditional automotive arena, keen on
opening up potential partnerships and new business models.
“When innovating we are not interested in technology for the
sake of technology. If a technology does not make a customer’s
life easier, better, safer or more fun, we don’t use it. Let’s face it
– who hasn’t dreamed of talking to their car via a wrist worn
wearable?” said Klas Bendrik Senior Vice President and Group
Chief Information Officer at Volvo Car Group.
“Our ongoing partnership with Volvo continues to bring ground
breaking technology to enhance the automotive experience,”
said Peggy Johnson, Executive Vice President of business
development at Microsoft. “Together with Volvo, we’re just
beginning to understand the potential that technology has to
improve driver safety and productivity.”
The new possibility to connect to a Volvo with voice control
through Microsoft Band 2 will be available for customers in
Volvo on Call enabled markets in spring 2016.

The SUBARU STARLINK infotainment systems, available in
Subaru vehicles, utilize Clarion’s advanced Smart Access cloud
connectivity platform to seamlessly sync and control cloudbased applications directly through the infotainment system’s
screen, providing immediate access to Magellan’s SmartGPS
navigation.
Designed to support both Apple iOS and Android smartphones,
the SUBARU STARLINK app brings continuously updated cloud
applications to the vehicle’s center stack display. Drivers can
then access all STARLINK approved apps and services
effortlessly, including Magellan’s SmartGPS, allowing for safe
access and display on the vehicle’s touch panel.
Magellan SmartGPS navigation will be available on future Subaru
models.
SmartGPS Navigation Software
Magellan’s SmartGPS navigation iOS and Android apps for
connected car bring Magellan’s proven smartphone navigation to
Subaru vehicles by connecting to the SUBARU STARLINK
platform. The SmartGPS navigation app provides a voice-guided
full navigation. As a GPS industry pioneer, Magellan’s navigation
and routing engines have been developed and proven through
years of R&D and testing.
Magellan’s SmartGPS navigation for Subaru will use an advanced
cloud-based mapping solution. This ensures customers that their
maps for GPS navigation are never outdated. Using a STARLINK
phone app to “connect to the dash”, Subaru customers can
safely and easily use their Magellan SmartGPS navigation app on
the infotainment touch panel.

Ford links car and home with Amazon and Wink
Ford is exploring linking smart devices like Amazon Echo and Wink to its vehicles to allow consumers to
control lights, thermostats, security systems and other features of their homes from their car, and to stop,
start, lock, unlock and check their vehicle’s fuel range from the comforts of their couch.
Ford is working to link the home
automation devices with its vehicles
through Ford SYNC. This comes as half of
consumers say they will buy at least one
smart home product in the next year,
according to Icontrol Networks.
With more than 15 million SYNC-equipped
vehicles on roads around the world today
and 43 million expected by 2020, Ford’s
communications
and
entertainment
technology is offering customers even
more connectivity. Amazon Echo and Wink
connectivity innovations are part of Ford
Smart Mobility, the plan to take Ford to
the next level in connectivity, mobility,
autonomous vehicles, the customer
experience, and data and analytics.
SYNC Connect and Amazon Echo
Ford is looking to use new SYNC Connect
technology to link vehicles with the
Amazon cloud-based voice service Alexa,
which would allow customers to access
their vehicle from inside their home. Using
Amazon Echo, a hands-free speaker and
voice command device that interfaces with
Alexa, Ford owners could request
assistance with various functions of their
car including:
 Start/stop the vehicle
 Lock/unlock
 State range and charge status of their
electric vehicle
 Check fuel level/miles-to-empty
 State vehicle mileage summary
 Provide vehicle location with street
name and driving time/mileage home
While at home, a Ford owner would
experience an interaction such as this:
Owner: “Alexa, ask my Ford for my
scheduled car start time.”
Alexa: “Here is the list of your current go
times. You have a start time set for
Monday at 7 a.m., with a cabin
temperature set to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tuesday at 5:45 a.m., with a cabin
temperature
set
to
75
degrees
Fahrenheit.”
Owner: “Alexa, ask my Ford for my car’s
driving range.”
Alexa: “You have an available range of 56
miles.”
Alexa also provides a link to a variety of
Internet-enabled smart devices, such as
lights, home security systems, automatic
garage doors and more.
From inside the vehicle, a driver would
access Alexa through the steering wheelmounted voice
recognition button,
allowing the driver to make requests of
connected smart devices or functions of
Alexa, including weather reports, music,
shopping lists and more.

receive answers to the following:
“Alexa, is my garage door closed?”
“Alexa, turn my porch lights on.”
“Alexa, when is my next appointment?”
SYNC AppLink and Wink
Ford also is working with Wink, the smart
home platform that brings together smart
home devices from many different
companies. Compatibility with SYNC
AppLink enables Wink users to easily
control and automate their smart home
device on the dashboard of their car or
through voice control.
For example, a driver nearing home could
have the option to either press a button or
say a command that opens the garage
door, turns on the lights, and unlocks the
front door.
“Connecting homes and cars is all about
making life easier and convenient for our
customers,” said Butler. “As smart homes
and smart cars continue to evolve, SYNC
technology makes it easy to implement
features that will make life better and
more convenient for our customers.”

Audi partners with Cubic Telecom
for Connected Cars in Europe
Bosch to offer retrofitted eCall
solution
Global connectivity platform provider Cubic Telecom
and Audi have announced a partnership to deliver
high-speed connectivity for the Audi connect
infotainment services to drivers across Europe. This is
representing the largest-scale rollout within Cubic
Telecom’s MVNO connectivity initiatives.
Robert Bosch will offer an eCall emergency
warning system that can be retrofitted. The
supplier’s eCall automatic emergency notification
system, launched in 2012, had previously only
been available as standard equipment on new
vehicles.
Through the initiative, Audi customers will not only be able to
access Audi infotainment services, but can also purchase
competitive regional or Europe-wide data plans using an in-car
store or the myAudi web portal, to provide easy internet access for
their portable devices with personal apps using the Audi connect
Wi-Fi hotspot. Cubic Telecom’s network partners cover 13
countries including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, UK, Ireland,
Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden, Austria
and Denmark making it the largest independent MVNO based LTE
network in Europe.
Bosch’s aftermarket system, which is plugged into a car’s
cigarette lighter, uses a sensor unit designed to detect
collisions and send the relevant information to a service
center. That service center can then contact the driver or
notify emergency services.
“Cubic Telecom has the most comprehensive and competitive
independent options available,” said Marcus Keith, director
development Audi connect at Audi. “With Cubic, our customers
traveling across Europe will be able to have secure and robust highspeed connectivity wherever they drive. This is just the start with
more countries to follow.”
Cubic Telecom uniquely provides a true global embedded

the driver travels in Europe. Users will experience premium-class

Cubic Telecom enabled Audi vehicles will enter the market in

eCall is becoming mandatory in all member nations of the
European Union.
In a press briefing at CES, Bosch CEO Volkmar Denner
underlined how the supplier group is betting on the internet
of things for future growth. Bosch has, for several years, been
building up its software expertise across all its business areas.
Bosch employs 55,000 people in R&D, of which one-third are
software engineers working solely on IoT technologies,
Denner said.
The Bosch CEO also announced that it will offer a cloudbased wrong-way driver alert system in the US and other
countries later this year. The system relies on a software
module that compares the movement of a vehicle on a
freeway with the permitted direction of travel.
Bosch will have a show car at CES with a a dashboard and
central console that have been transformed into an electronic
display. The information on the display changes as the car’s
surroundings change. Bosch said the car is designed to show a
new dimension of human-machine interaction.

Nissan Europe selects Microsoft Azure for telematics system
Nissan Motor and Microsoft announced at CES that all Nissan LEAF models and Infiniti models in Europe will
have Connect Telematics Systems (CTS) powered by Microsoft Azure. Since the Nissan LEAF’s launch in
2010, more than 200,000 have been sold worldwide, making it the world’s best-selling electric vehicle.
Nissan selected Azure to meet customers’ expectations about in-vehicle mobility solutions, create additional
ways to interact with their vehicles, and enhance safety.
Nissan designs cars to meet the needs of
the next generation of car buyers, the
environmentally conscious “digital natives.”
Having transformed the performance,
practicality and public perception of EVs
around the world since the LEAF’s launch,
Nissan remains one of the leaders in EV
technology. The connectivity to their
owners and to the world around them
makes electric cars more attractive and
convenient. Maps, range prediction,
charging station availability, charge status,
plus all the services customers have come
to expect when inside a vehicle are

powered down. An onboard timer can also
be programmed to start the charging
event.

Microsoft was the first major cloud

With the standard Hands-Free Text
Messaging Assistant for all Nissan LEAF

incoming text messages via voice control

alerted to an incoming text and, after
initiating the system, can hear the text
read out loud and respond by voice, or via
the steering wheel switches using preset
answers such as “driving, can’t text,” “on
my way,” “running late,” “okay.” These
experiences are powered by the back-end
connectivity and support of Azure.
Nissan can also send over-the-air “point of
interest” (POI) updates as they become
available, enabling customers to have the
latest information as the company
continues to refresh its services.

Administration said in documents posted
online Saturday that it’s ending a fivemonth investigation into the vulnerabilities
of automotive radios.
The agency also said last summer’s recall
of 1.4 million Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and
Ram vehicles closed the opening that
allowed hackers to remotely take over a
Jeep Cherokee.
The hack by security experts Charlie Miller
and Chris Valasek touched off the
investigation in July and raised fears that
millions of cars and trucks could be
vulnerable. They were able to change the
Cherokee’s speed and control the brakes,
radio, windshield wipers and transmission
through the Uconnect infotainment
system.
The hackers informed Fiat Chrysler of their
findings and detailed them at a cyber
conference, triggering the investigation.
But the fear of widespread vulnerability to
hackers appears to be unfounded. NHTSA
investigators said in documents that similar
radios made by Harman International went
to Volkswagen, Audi and Bentley, but that
those vehicles have safety systems that
would stop hackers.
“Based on a thorough review of technical
information supplied during the course of
this investigation, there does not appear to
be a reason to suspect that the
infotainment head units Harman supplied
to other vehicle manufacturers contain the
vulnerabilities identified by FCA,” NHTSA
said in the documents.
In addition, the agency said Sprint, Fiat
Chrysler’s wireless provider, blocked
access to a radio communications port that
was unintentionally left open. The FCA
recall also included software changes that
thwarted hackers, the agency said.
“Third party security evaluation and
regression testing identified vulnerabilities
that were either remedied by Sprint or
through updates to the FCA Uconnect
software,” the agency said.
NHTSA also checked 30 consumer
complaints to the company and the agency
but could not confirm that hackers caused
any of the reported problems.

Visteon agrees to buy automotive multimedia tech supplier
Automotive cockpit electronics supplier Visteon has signed an agreement to acquire AllGo Systems, a
developer of embedded multimedia system solutions to global vehicle manufacturers. The agreement, which
is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, is expected to close during the first
quarter of 2016. Terms were not disclosed.
Headquartered in Bangalore, India, AllGo is
a leading infotainment media playback
supplier, bringing Linux and Android
engineering expertise for automotive
applications, including a comprehensive
intellectual
property
(IP)-protected
portfolio of in-vehicle-infotainment, media
and connectivity solutions for the
connected display audio market.
“AllGo’s strong position in multimedia and
smartphone connectivity software adds
greater scale and depth to Visteon’s
infotainment software capabilities,” said
Sachin Lawande, Visteon president and
CEO. “AllGo’s ready-to-use IP provides
automotive manufacturers with a turnkey
software-on-chip (SoC) solution to costeffectively introduce smartphone and
mobile applications from the vehicle’s
audio head unit.”

Toyota shows Mirai with satellite
communications
At the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS),
Toyota displayed a research vehicle based on the Mirai fuel cell
vehicle which is equipped with satellite communications technology
from Kymeta, a U.S.-based company that is the world’s leader in flatpanel antenna technology.

Toyota is working to enhance its
connected technologies, including a plan
to install a Data Communication Module
into a broader range of its vehicles. The
company is also considering using
satellite communications in the future,
including high capacity satellites that
offer much higher data transfer rates
than conventional satellite technologies.
While these satellites have historically
required the use of a “dish” antenna on
the ground, Kymeta’s satellite antennas
remove the need for mechanical
components by using software and liquid
crystal technologies to electronically
track and steer towards satellites. The
lightweight, flat profile of the antenna
also allows for seamless integration
during vehicle assembly or easy
aftermarket installation.
Satellite communications offer several
key benefits to meet automotive needs,
including 1) the distribution of huge
amounts of data to a vehicle, 2) broad
coverage
areas
and
the
global
deployment of connected vehicles that
share common standards across national
borders, and 3) more stable and secure
communications,
particularly
in
emergencies such as natural disasters.
Since September 2013, Toyota and
Kymeta have been jointly researching flat
antennae, embedded in the car, to
support satellite distribution of huge
amounts of data to a vehicle. With an
exclusive right for development and
testing of the on-car antenna, Toyota lent
the company research vehicles for test
driving. The Mirai displayed at NAIAS
represents the progress of these efforts.
Mirai Creation Investment Limited
Partnership, a fund where Toyota
participates as an investor, provided an
investment of 5 million dollars U.S. to
Kymeta this month to enhance future
technology research and development.
Toyota expects acceleration of the joint
research with Kymeta through the
investment.

BAIC shows i-Link connectivity and plans US R&D
BAIC EV, a leading brand within China’s electric vehicle (EV) industry, has established a new R&D center in
Detroit, Michigan, which will help the company evaluate overseas market demand, obtain core EV
technology, build on brand influence, and eventually provide support for their international layout.

Detroit R&D Center symbolizes China’s EV

technology. It will also serve as an
opportunity for BAIC EV and China’s EV
industry to access top technologies and
expand their overseas market.
The Detroit R&D Center will run relatively
independently to ensure that the

China telecoms giants
plan future
collaboration
The carriers are China’s second- and thirdlargest communications companies. Their
top managers gathered here Wednesday
to sign a strategic partnership agreement
targeting such core businesses as
cellphone and high-speed-communications
operations. The move is seen aimed at
withstanding pressure from their larger
competitor.
The partnership entails joint network
construction and sharing of existing
resources, aimed partly at advancing the
fourth-generation Long-Term Evolution
telecommunications standard in China.
New handsets will be developed in line
with the standard. The duo will also team
up to provide international roaming and
other services abroad.
China Unicom and China Telecom have
lagged behind China Mobile in offering 4G
service, letting the competitor dominate
the market. Beijing is thought to be looking
into a potential management integration
between the smaller companies. The duo’s
chief executives traded positions in
August.

GM China starts employee carpooling programme
General Motors China has introduced a carpooling pilot program for employees based in Shanghai that
enables them to arrange rides together using a self-developed mobile app.
This is one of GM’s recent moves
worldwide to gain a better understanding
of urban mobility issues and insights into
car-sharing user experiences. The mobile
app will enable about 700 employees at
GM China’s Shanghai headquarters to
share an enjoyable ride with their
colleagues while making an effort to
reduce emissions and congestion.
Drivers can input their preferred route,
departure time and number of seats
available. Riders can submit their
commuter requests. The self-developed
matching system quickly offers a list of
potential drivers for riders to approach.
When the driver accepts a rider, the
system automatically shows one fewer
available seat in his or her vehicle.
“The employee carpooling pilot program
merges the Internet with intelligent mobile
technology,” said Vivian Yu, who is leading
GM China Urban Active Projects. “It will
not only benefit our team members, but
also enable us to test software systems in
everyday usage scenarios.”
“This initiative will further expand our
activities in alternate transportation
models in one of our most important
markets in the world,” said Julia Steyn, GM
vice president, Urban Active. “It will help
us learn more about vehicle user behavior
as we develop business models for future
global mobility solutions.”
GM CEO Mary Barra and her leadership
team recently outlined the company’s
plans to capitalize on the future of
personal mobility, building upon nearly two
decades of connectivity leadership through
OnStar.
In addition to internal campus-based carsharing and ride-sharing programs in the
U.S., China and Europe, GM recently
announced its first residential car-sharing
initiative, Let’s Drive NYC, in the U.S.
Unlike other mobility service offerings,
Let’s Drive NYC leverages integrated and
existing OnStar connectivity technologies
and services such as remote diagnostic
status and access to OnStar advisors with
the push of a button.
In Europe, the company’s Opel brand has
deployed a peer-to-peer sharing service
called CarUnity, which incorporates
dealers and their fleets to provide an array
of available vehicles for sharing. In China, a
fleet of EN-V 2.0 electric concept vehicles
went into service at Shanghai Jiao Tong
University earlier this year as part of a
multi-modal campus transportation system
alongside bicycles, cars and shuttle buses.
Further car- and ride-sharing initiatives will
follow starting in the first quarter of 2016.
