Freshman Dining At JHU
Freshman Meal Plan Choices 2009-2010
All Freshmen must choose one of the following
meal plans:
Anytime Dining +100 Dining Dollars + 2 guest passes
per semester
Available to all students, this plan offers incredible value
with unlimited in and out privileges at the Fresh Food Café
and 100 Dining Dollars to use at any JHU Dining by Aramark location on campus.
14 Meals per week + 250 Dining Dollars + 2 guest
passes per semester
Available to all students, this plan provides any 14 of the 24
meals offered each week at the Fresh Food Café. Students
may use up to 4 meal swipes per day on this plan. Making
this plan even more flexible is the inclusion of 250 dining
dollars per semester to use at any JHU Dining by Aramark
location on campus.
Kosher Plans (11 or 14 meals per week at the Fresh
Food Café plus 250 Dining Dollars and 2 guest
passes per semester)
Available to any student, our Kosher Meal Plan is offered at
Taam Tov at The Fresh Food Café. Star K supervised lunch
and dinner is offered Monday through Thursday. Lunch is
provided on Friday, and brunch and dinner on Sunday. A
separate Shabbat and holiday meal plan is offered through
Hopkins Hillel.
•Students enrolled in the Anytime Dining or 14meals-per-week plans as well as the
14 or 11 Kosher meals-per-week plans enjoy those meals in the Fresh Food Café
•Freshmen must choose from one of the freshmen or any Kosher meal plan
•Dining Dollars may be used in any JHU Dining by Aramark location on the
Homewood campus
**Only the Kosher 11 meals per week plan is entirely under STAR K supervision;
those who opt for the 14 meals per week plan will eat 3 of the 14 meals from the
main (non-Kosher) servery.
Explanation of Plans:
Meals per week plans provide a set number of meals per week (except the AT,
which is unlimited) at the Fresh Food Café. These meals expire at midnight each
Saturday and any unused meals are forfeited. Students may use up to four meals
per day. Any unspent Dining Dollars associated with these plans carry over from
first to second semester, but expire (non refundable) at the conclusion of the
academic year.
Dining Dollars:
Dining Dollars provided with freshman meal plans can be used at the Fresh
Food Café, Nolan’s at Charles Commons, Levering Food Court, Pura Vida coffee,
Charles Street Market and Einstein Bros. Bagels. The amount of each purchase
is deducted from the available balance. Any unspent Dining Dollars carry over
from first to second semester, but expire (non refundable) at the conclusion of the
academic year.
Freshmen enjoy all their meals at the
all-you-care to eat Fresh Food Café
(FFC) located on the freshmen quad
adjacent to the AMR residence halls
and just steps away from Wolman
Hall as well. The FFC offers
continuous service divided into 24
meal periods each week.
Fresh, premium ingredients
Fresh, seasonal and locally-sourced ingredients are the
foundation of every meal served at the FFC. The Fresh
Food Café is comprised of seven distinct stations providing a wide variety of menu options at every meal designed
to appeal to our diverse student body.
The Café is proud to feature Boar’s Head Brand® Deli
meats and cheeses, a Char-Grill offers fresh, individuallyformed sirloin burgers, Hebrew National® hot dogs and a
variety of daily specials. The salad bar offers an extensive
variety of farm-fresh seasonal produce, grilled salad toppers and house-made dressings. Breads and rolls from a
local artisan bakery round out the station.
The Homestyle Station provides the classics -- carved
roast beef, turkey, rotisserie chicken, meatloaf, grilled fish
and more. Fresh pastas, veggies and house-made soups
make this station a favorite destination.
The Fresh Food Café Hearth oven turns out great pizza
and calzone that rival any Italian restaurant. And, last but
not least, the Fresh Food Café dessert options include
fresh fruit, ice cream, cookies, cakes and pies.
Something for Everyone
Vegan and Vegetarian diets are no
problem; in fact, we offer a dedicated station specializing in all that
is vegetable. The Vegan/Vegetarian
station offers cooked-to-order stir
frys where you choose the ingredients, a rotating selection of savory
vegan soups and a selection of rice,
that when combined with vegetable
proteins, make nutritionally-complete proteins. We also
offer an enormous variety of vegetarian options at nearly
every station at the FFC—including our colorful and
seasonally-fresh salad bar.
Students who keep a Kosher diet also have a wide selection
of Star K certified wholesome meals served Sunday brunch
through Friday lunch in
Taam Tov, the Fresh Food
Café’s Kosher servery.
Those with varying dietary
needs are generally well
accommodated at the FFC.
The wide variety of menu
options offered at each
meal period makes it easy
to customize a meal. Students with special dietary
needs should contact the
Housing and Dining office
before arriving in the fall.
We’ll be happy to arrange
a meeting with our executive chef who can provide detail
and insight into recipes and provide an overview of the
many offerings at the FFC.
Eating healthy and responsibly at the FFC couldn’t be
easier. The Hopkins Healthy Options Program got its start
at the FFC and steers you toward healthier menu options
should you be so inclined. Our whole grain designation
flags items in our servery containing healthy whole grains,
and our Food Print program allows guests to see how food
choices affect our world. Our Responsible Dining Program
includes a long list of special initiatives designed to address
both the well being of our customers and our
environment alike.
When schedules are tight, Freshmen may also take advantage of the FFC’s Meals to Go Program. In addition, we
offer a Meals in a Minute program which provides a meal
on the go from either the Charles Street Market or Levering
Food Court when schedules preclude a sit down meal at
the Fresh Food Café.
Throughout the year, The FFC sponsors a number of special events recognizing holidays and special occasions. Our
now legendary Sterling Jazz
Brunch events are scheduled
four times each year and
are reminiscent of some of
the finest hotel brunches in
town—complete with smoked
salmon and peel & eat shrimp.
