JOE’S OF L.A.
Baby Scrapbooks:
Tips for Beginners
(Part 1)
by Jamie Plyler
• Chronological Order: There are many different ways you can organize
your baby’s scrapbook, but the easiest way is chronologically. And let’s be
honest, it makes sense too.
• Make your first lone page an introduction page: Every Scrapbook
has one lonely page at the beginning before your spreads (2 pages side by
side). This page is a great page for a picture of baby with name, birth date,
place of birth, etc. This is also a good page under baby’s name to write the
meaning and why you chose the name.
• Don’t forget about your pregnancy: The first 9 months of your baby’s
life is spent in the womb. So use the first spread or two for showing pregnancy things. Did you take a photo of your tummy every month? Did you
have any weird cravings? What were your thoughts from the first ultrasound or the first time you heard your baby’s heartbeat? These are great
things for the first spreads. It is also a good place for ultrasound photos.
• Also consider using one spread for the baby shower: Some people
who have multiple showers might want to make an entire scrapbook just
for the showers. But if you had one small shower you can always incorporate it into your baby scrapbook. (Extra tip: Use a pocket and keep your
cards from your shower in your book.)
• Hospital Photos: I know you have hundreds of these. Kids love to
look at pictures of themselves as a baby. Here is where you would journal
baby’s stats including: weight, length, time of birth, doctor’s name, etc.
Also write feelings, funny stuff that happened at the hospital, who came
to visit, etc.
Where there’s something for everyone
•WANTED TO BUY,
Antiques & Collectibles: Cleaning an attic
or basement? Liquidating
an estate or have items to
sell? Good prices paid.

Our Daily Bread
SAVING DYLAN
By Dave Branon
Read: John 9:1-12
Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the
works of God should be revealed in him. John 9:3
The baby lay critically ill in the hospital, fighting to
breathe. He had pneumonia, which made staying alive
a struggle for his 8-month-old body. Doctors, nurses,
and his family fought to save this weak baby boy.
Some people say he should never have made it to 8
months of age. Others say this precious child should
not have been allowed to be born, or that he should
have been left to die after he was born.
Why would anyone say this? For one simple reason:
Dylan has Down syndrome. Through no fault of his
own or of his parents, my great-nephew has an extra
chromosome, and he will face some added struggles
in his life.
But isn’t his life worth as much as the life of a sick
baby with an extra chromosome? Are we not all of
equal value in the eyes of our Creator? Aren’t we all
deficient in some way? Our lack of perfection should
remind us that no one has the right to judge another’s
worth.
Our imperfections are opportunities for God to work
in our lives. That’s what Jesus told His disciples when
they asked why a man had been born blind. He said
it happened so that“ the works of God should be
revealed in him”(John 9:3).
We’re seeing God work in Dylan’s life. That’s what
he’s here for-just like the rest of us.
People in whom the world sees no value,
But only a burden to bear,
Teach us great lessons of God’s sovereign power—
He loves them as treasures so rare. —Carbaugh
If God didn’t have a purpose for us,
we wouldn’t be here.

Detailed planning, extensive preparation, and
well-coordinated execution are the fundamentals
of a successful hunt. These key components also
epitomize what is required for the congregation of
First Baptist Church of New Castle to host their annual Sportsmen’s Dinner. This exceptional outdoorthemed outreach to the men, women, and youth of
Lawrence County and the local area who love to hunt
was recently conducted on Saturday, September 20.
Their 12th Annual Sportsmen’s Dinner was an overwhelming success offering good food, great fellowship, informative seminars, a challenging keynote
speaker, and generous door prizes. As a first-time attendee, let me share an overview of this memorable
evening that brought together like-minded sportsmen, women, and youths to celebrate God and his
marvelous creation, the great outdoors!
I could sense the enthusiasm when I arrived before 4:30 to set-up my seminar room and almost 100
attendees were already standing in-line waiting for
the doors to open at 5 PM. Registration ran from 5
to 5:30 with each of the 400 pre-registered attendees of the free event receiving their meal voucher,
door prize ticket, and event program. The lobby and
parking lot contained numerous displays that turned
everyone’s thoughts to hunting season. Welcoming
remarks, instructions for the evening, and prayer for
the meal were initially shared in the auditorium. The
hearty dinner of pasta, sausage, salad, and homemade pie was served to the hungry masses with exceptional efficiency by an extensive team of friendly
church volunteers within the allocated 1 hour and 15
minutes. Each participant had the option of selecting
two of the 13 possible seminar options with Session 1
running from 6:40-7:10 and Session 2 following from
7:20-7:50 PM.
This year’s wide variety of seminars included (1)
In-line Muzzleloading: Getting the Most Out of Your
Smokepole with Ted Montgomery; (2) The History
and Development of Modern Archery by Bob Foster; (3) Hunting 101 with Steve Scott; (4) Bow Care
and Maintenance by Ron Williams; (5) Making Turkey Calls with Dave Messner; (6) Today’s Crossbow
by Paul Kamenar; (7) Chasing Cottontails with Matt
Settle; (8) Selecting the Right Gun for the Right Price
and Saving Money by Mike Lewis; (9) Pennsylvania
Black Bears in 2014, Population Status and Seasons
with Roger Coup; (10) Fall Turkey Hunting Tactics
by Larry Cole; (11) Why Buy a Gun Safe? with Ryan
Hazlett; (12) Field Care, Field Dressing, CWD Skull
Prep by Larry Baker; and (13) Shifting Your Groundhog Hunting Paradigm, which I had the privilege of
conducting. (Please see my Weekly Bargain Bulletin
#2135, March 22, 2013 column on-line.)
The highlight of the evening was the insightful
and humorous remarks by keynote speaker, Larry
“Jake” Jacobs. His topic, “Scouting for Success”, encouraged listeners to consider the parallels between
pre-season scouting to ensure hunting success and
the need to scout out the truths of Jesus, which have
eternal consequences for everyone. Additionally,
each participant received a copy of “Faith Afield: A
Sportsman’s Devotional”, by Steve Scott, founder
of On Target Outfitters – an outdoor oriented youth
ministry, to provide “food for the spirit while hunting for food for the table.” The event concluded with
bountiful outdoor-related door prizes.
FBC’s 12th Annual Sportsmen’s Dinner was dedicated In Memory of Clarence “Paul” Barkley. Special
thanks go out to Gary Weimer, all the members of
the Organizational Committee, and the many dedicated volunteers who make it possible. Please save
the 3rd Saturday of September 2015 for next year’s
13th Annual Sportsmen’s Dinner, register early to
ensure a seat, and get ready to find out where faith
meets the forest/field! God Bless, Be Safe, and

Welcome to the many voices of
RANDY VELEZ
Friday, October 3 • 5:30-8:30pm
at El-Canelo, 2017 West State St., Union Twp.
Many people have called Randy ‘the Rich Little’ of music. Randy could
start a performance out as Louis Armstrong, move into a cover of Willie
Nelson or Johnny Cash, go into John Fogerty, and five minutes later become the voice of Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra, Freddie Fender, Roy
Orbison or Elvis Presley, kick it into a modern rock cover, then end the
evening with a cover of Groban, Bocelli or Pavarotti. The possibilities
are nearly limitless and even include a full selection of Latin music!

VEGETABLE STIR-FRY
illustrates how delicious a vegetarian diet can be!
Men and women who do not adhere to a vegetarian
lifestyle may think such a diet is monotonous and
bland. However, many vegetarian dishes are full
of flavor, which is why many people who transition
from more traditional diets to vegetarian alternatives often discover that such a conversion is not as
difficult as they anticipated.
Those who want to try a vegetarian dish with some
flavor should consider the following recipe for
“Spiced Vegetable Stir-Fry” courtesy of Hugo Arnold’s “The Wagamama Cookbook” (Kyle Books).
Spiced Vegetable Stir-Fry• Serves 2
3 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 garlic clove, peeled
and sliced • 1 red chile, trimmed, seeded and sliced
•1 lemongrass stalk, out leaves removed and sliced,
• 1 red onion, peeled and chopped into 1/2-inch
pieces • 2 small leeks, cut on the diagonal into
1-inch lengths •12 snow peas • 10 baby corn, cut in
half lengthwise • 1 handful of bean sprouts
• 4 bok choy, roughly chopped• 1/2 teaspoon
sugar • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce • 9 ounces
noodles • 21/2 cups miso soup (see below)
• Pinch of salt
Heat a wok over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes or
until completely hot and almost smoking, then add
the vegetable oil. Add the garlic, chile and lemongrass and stir-fry for 30 seconds. Add the onion
and leeks and stir-fry for another minute. Add the
remaining vegetables and season with salt, sugar
and soy sauce. Stir-fry for another 3 minutes until
all the vegetables are tender.
Cook the noodles in a large pot of boiling water for
2 to 3 minutes or until just tender. Drain thoroughly.
Heat the miso soup in another pan. Divide the vegetables and noodles between 2 bowls and ladle the
hot miso soup over them.
Miso Soup
1 tablespoon dried wakame, soaked in cold water
for 5 minutes • 21/4 cups dashi, made with dashi
no moto according to the package instructions • 2
tablespoons miso paste • 2 scallions, trimmed and
sliced• Pinch of mikku powder
Drain the soaked wakame and roughly chop. Bring
the dashi to a boil and whisk in the miso paste. Add
the mikku powder.
Divide the wakame and scallions between 2 cups
or small bowls and pour the miso soup over them.

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he
who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry
you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. “With
whom will you compare me or count me equal? To
whom will you liken me that we may be compared?
Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales; they hire a goldsmith to make it into
a god, and they bow down and worship it. They lift it to
their shoulders and carry it; they set it up in its place,
and there it stands. From that spot it cannot move.
Even though someone cries out to it, it cannot answer;
it cannot save them from their troubles.
“Remember this, keep it in mind, take it to heart, you
rebels. Remember the former things, those of long ago;
I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there
is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say,
‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’
From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off
land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said,
that I will bring about; what I have planned, that I
will do. Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted, you who
are now far from my righteousness. I am bringing my
righteousness near, it is not far away; and my salvation will not be delayed. I will grant salvation to Zion,
my splendor to Israel.

That’s Something
CURIOUS
by F. Will
I was having a conversation with Camellia Sinensis early this morning. We speak
often about the day ahead. She is nice to talk with because she is a very good
listener and never interrupts. Sitting at the kitchen counter with a steaming cup
of water should make for stimulating conversation, but dropping a bag of dried
leaves into that steaming cup makes a good companion. That’s what I like about
Camellia, the scientific name for a plant commonly known as tea.
It is believed that all tea plants (herbal teas excepted) are linked to an area
that includes northern Burma and a couple of bordering Chinese provinces. Tea
was used first for medicinal purposes during the Shang Dynasty. Soon after the
leaves were boiled in water to make a bitter drink that was found to be stimulating.
Shennong liked to taste and consume herbs to check for medical properties. Legend describes Shennong as having a transparent body, which could be
very useful in viewing the effects of his experimentation. One day in 2737 BC
he was burning tea twigs. The leaves were carried away by the rising hot air.
They then settled into a cauldron of boiling water. Shennong tasted the water
and found it to be stimulating. Tea became his antidote for whatever poisonous effects his herbs might have. Shennong later tasted a yellow flower which
caused his intestines to rupture. Unfortunately he was unable to retrieve his tea
in time. Shennong, known as a father of Chinese medicine, is also given credit
for acupuncture.
Tea is blended with plants from other varieties to create all sorts of flavors.
This invites experimentation. Russian Brick Tea is a curious example. Black tea
dust is compressed to create a large black brick. Thirsty? Just grate some off and
add hot water. Today these bricks are used more often as paperweights. They
probably make a better conversation piece than a beverage.
The stalks and twigs of the Green Tea plant are ground up and used as fertilizer in most places. In Japan they are blended in to make Kukicha, which has
a pleasant aroma and taste. The Chinese ferment Green Tea with a fungus to
make an exotic tea called Pu-erh. It is formed into blocks or round cakes. On
Japan’s Shikoku Island leaves are boiled and then fermented with lactic acid
bacteria to make a tea called Awabancha.
Visit Tibet and try a cup of Pocha. They like to add milk but Yak butter is more
available. Yak butter? Yup, that’s what they use. High in calories, it’s good for
stimulating Tibetans during cold winters. Panda Dung Tea is one of my favorite
strange tea types. No, they don’t follow the Pandas around to gather up fresh raw
materials. The Panda dung is actually stimulating only to the tea plant. It is used
to fertilize and only to fertilize.
A tea that stands alone is Garlic Tea. Blending two plants with a strong flavor
sounds strange, but there is a benefit to consuming this beverage. If you wish to
spend time alone meditating, Drink Garlic Tea and you’ll stand alone. It is sure
to discourage stimulating conversation. ©2014 WBB
