PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Parents,
My first week back has been somewhat
challenging as a result of the broken water
main and associated damage. At the time of
writing we have two classrooms out of action
plus the Library and Computer room and part
of the Admin building off limits for safety
reasons. The canteen was set to reopen on
Thursday. We have a little over half the
children’s toilets operational again but still no
staff toilets. Many workplaces would not
function in these circumstances but ours has
carried on throughout with minimum fuss and
no complaints. The support of the school
community has been greatly appreciated.
Last weekend many of our children
participated in activities around the “Five
Lands Walk” and the contribution of the
Junior Choir led by Mrs Woodward and Mrs
MacDonald and the Dance Group led by Mrs
Alvarez and Mrs Harris was an outstanding
feature of the event. Thanks and
congratulations to all involved. I’ve also been
asked to mention our children from the school
bands who attended the “Big Day Out” on
Monday. Special comment was made about
their excellent behavior throughout the day.
They were great representatives of our
school.
The end of term two marks a very special
occasion for our school because this Friday is
Mr Nicholson’s last day as our Deputy
Principal and indeed his last day of service
with the Department. Mr Nicholson’s
contribution to our school over 17 years as
Deputy Principal has been truly remarkable.
Ours is a very happy and highly professional
teaching team. It’s the best team that I have
worked with in my 28 years as a Principal
(and I have seen some very good ones). A
great deal of the credit for the atmosphere in
our school must go to Mr Nicholson for his
great work, often behind the scenes, with a
succession of different Principals. The fact
that he has been respected and and indeed
“treasured” by all of us is quite an
achievement in itself.
The staff, his family and many friends gave
him a great farewell last Friday evening. This
Friday it will be the turn of the children and
the parent community at our morning
assembly. He is going to be a very hard act to
follow.
I wish everyone a happy and safe vacation,
school resumes on Tuesday 16th July.

STAFF MEMBER OF THE WEEK
Mr Nicholson
football and cricket when he was younger, as
they were the only sports offered. He is a
1960 and early 70’s fan when it comes to
music but also has a soft spot for James
Taylor and Neil Young’s music.
He has taught at 3 different schools. His first
school only had one teacher which was him
and 10-15 students. This was back when he
first started teaching in 1975. His second
school was Kanwal Public School and then
Berkeley Vale Public.
If he didn’t become a teacher he said he
would consider being an actor.
He has made some strong friendships with
the staff.
All the best Mr Nicholson, we will miss you
terribly!!!!

NEW SCIENCE RESOURCES
The staff member of the week this week is
our hardworking Deputy Principal, Mr
Nicholson.
Sadly Mr Nicholson is leaving us at the end of
this term to retire and play lawn bowls.
Mr Nicholson has been a teacher for 38 years
and has spent 18 of those years at this
fantabulous school. He has put smiles on
many faces throughout the years and will
definitely be missed.
His favourite food is Italian and he loves to
play lawn bowls. He also loved to play
Terrigal Public School was recently
successful in being awarded a Telstra Kids
Fund Grant to the value of $1 200. The funds
have been used to purchase science
resources for the school. Included in our
order are such teaching aids as solar energy
kits, pulleys and gears kits, balloon
helicopters, electricity sets, magnifying
glasses and simple machines discovery sets.
Such high-interest resources will provide
valuable experiences for our students.
A big thank you to parent, Mr Rod
Hutchinson, for applying for and securing the
grant on behalf of the school.

Reading your child’s report
Reports can mean anxious times for children. Will my parents be disappointed or proud?
This is the main concern of most children.
Could try harder . . . always does her best . . . lacks concentration . . .
easily distracted . . . a pleasure to teach . . .
Do these comments, taken from a batch of student reports sound
familiar?
Student reports bring mixed feelings for parents. Pleasure and
pride if they are performing well but considerable angst when
children are not progressing as you hoped.
Reports can mean anxious times for children too. Will my parents
be disappointed or proud? This is the main concern of most
children. Kids of all ages take their cues from their parents, so your
reaction to their school report can affect the way they see
themselves as learners and as people.
Before you rip open the sealed envelope containing the report do
a little self-check to see if you are in the right frame of mind:
1. Are your expectations for your son or daughter realistic and in
line with their ability?
Expectations are tricky. If they are too high then kids can be turned
off learning. Too low and there is nothing to strive for. Pitch your
expectations in line with your child’s abilities. A quick check of
your child’s last report cards may provide you with a good
yardstick.
2. Do you believe that children learn at different rates?
There are slow bloomers, late developers and steady-as-you-go
kids in every classroom, so avoid comparing your child to siblings,
your friends’ children and even yourself when you were a child.
Instead look for individual progress.
3. Are you willing to safeguard your child’s self-esteem rather
than deflate it?
Self-confidence is a pre-requisite for learning, so be prepared to
be as positive and encouraging as possible.
School reports come in different formats. Some are prescriptive
while some use grading systems such as A, B, C, etc. with room
for teacher comments. Regardless of the format school reports
should provide you with an idea of your child’s progress in all
subject areas, their attitude and social development.
Here are some ideas to consider when you open your child’s
report:
parentingideas.com.au
parentingideas.co.uk
Focus on strengths. Do you look for strengths or weaknesses
first? The challenge is to focus on strengths even if they are not in
the traditional 3Rs or core subjects.
Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning.
If the report indicates that effort is below standard, then you have
something to work on. If your child is putting in the required effort,
then you cannot ask any more than that, regardless of the grading.
Broaden your focus away from academic performance to form a
picture of your child’s progress as a member of a social setting.
How your child gets along with his or her peers will influence his
happiness and well-being, as well as give an indicator to his future.
The skills of independence and co-operation are highly valued by
employers so don’t dismiss these as unimportant.
Take note of student self-assessment. Kids are generally very
honest and will give a realistic assessment of their progress. They
are generally very perceptive so take note of their opinions.
Discuss the report with your son or daughter talking about
strengths first before looking at areas that need improvement.
Ask for their opinion about how they performed and discuss their
concerns.
After reports are read and discussed celebrate your child’s efforts
with a special activity or treat. In this way you will recognise
progress and remind them that the holidays are just around the
corner when they can forget about assessment, tests and reports
for a while.
