We are the Rovers...
A massive congrats to Ned’s
Mum from the Under 10
division 4 team. Lucy was
on stage with her entourage from the cast of Home
and Away to receive a Logie for the most popular
drama programme. Despite
her demanding role as Series Producer, this devoted

hope you will join us in congratula(ng Lucy on this
amazing achievement.
Let’s see if we can create

Bottles in the yellow bin guys - Rovers committee members wrap up the 2013 junior presentation day
The 2014 season is well
underway now, and while
there are a few teams
struggling to find goals,
there are some teams that
are scoring for fun. Pictured here are the Under
10 Div 4 team after a good
win, but take a glance at the
Division 6 table and you will
see Rovers proudly a-top
with three amazing wins, a
10-0 scoreline this weekend
added to their 7-0 and 8-0
from earlier in the season.
It’s not all about winning
though, as All Age Div 5
will attest to. Long way to
go boys, long way to go!
Three fields and counting...
The season is underway for
our Mini-Roos, the under 6s

more games are at Meadowbank, giving us more home

CUP ONE : WORLD CUP
The World Cup is almost upon us : a
month of drama(cally early rises for
the avid fan, as the 2am, 5am and 8am
kick offs keep us from our slumbers.
This is going to be an absolute treat,
from the opening fixture Brazil v Croa(a, through to the final group matches, there are three, even four games
on any given day from the 13th to the
27th June.
Of course there will be some blockbuster games, Spain v Holland early on
the first Saturday morning, England v
Italy the following morning and even
the so-called lesser games will provide
quality entertainment, think Belgium v
Algeria or Bosnia v Iran.
Before then though, we get a chance
to sample the fare on offer from our
very own Socceroos, who are playing a
“send off” game at Stadium Australia
across the Parrama:a River on Monday 26th May against South Africa.
Tickets are s(ll on sale for this one, get
your scarves out and head to Olympic
Park to see of your heroes as they
sharpen their skills for the World Cup.
Following their arrival in Brazil, the
boys will also take on Croa(a in a
friendly before the opening fixture
against Chile on Saturday 14th June, an

This is the pinnacle of our footballing

they take on the best!
CUP TWO : ASIAN CUP
The Asian Cup draw now established,
the next challenge for all Australians
is securing a ticket for the games.
Good news is that there are venue
packs available for a reasonable price
that give you access to every game in
Sydney, including the Australia pool
game and the final itself. Tickets go
on pre-sale on May 7th for members
of the Football Family, so keep your
eyes peeled.

weeks of top quality football hitting
our shores.
CUP THREE : FFA CUP
West Ryde Rovers Super League first

the Waratah Cup, the first qualifying
round for the pres(gious FFA Cup. Our
conquerers Revesby Rovers were then
unceremoniously dumped out by Sans
Souci from the Eastern Suburbs FA.
We have con(nued to follow Sans Souci through April, as they overcame
Lokomo(v Cove 1-0 and then followed
that one up with yet another 1-0 win
over Hills Pumas from our very own
GHFA associa(on. So where does that
leave us now?
Early May will see a blockbuster match
for Sans Souci, at home to Northern
Tigers from Asquith in the KDSA, the
winners of which will qualify for the
quarter finals of the Waratah Cup,
which is also the final qualifying round
for the FFA Cup. Another two wins
could see them face top level compe((on anywhere in the country from any
level.
We are still following :

CUP FOUR : STATE CUP
The State Cup is a collec(on of cups for the various age groups in NSW from Under 13s up. This year we have six teams represen(ng the club, our U13/1, U15/1 and U18/1 teams all expected to put in a good performance, whereas it’s more about
the taking part for our All Age 4 and 5 teams to see if they can cause an upset or two in a dream cup run. Under 13s have a
bye in the first round, Under 15s take on Sylvania on Star Wars Day (May 4th) at LH Waud with a 9am kick off, and Under
18s also have a weekend off State Cup duty with a bye.
Of course the Super League were also called into ac(on in the State Cup, playing a
qualifying game against Glenmore Park in Granville the day aLer a tough Super
League game on the Saturday, and their rewards for a 5-0 victory, which saw the
inaugura(on of the new Rovers victory song, is a trip back to Granville to take on
their Waratah Cup conquerers Revesby Rovers in Round 1.
The All Age teams have also been handed tricky draws, the AA4 against Baulkham Hills and the AA5 up against Como West
Jannali. This could be a very interes(ng weekend of football coming up.

CUP FIVE : GHFA CUP
This is our league cup if you like, where all teams from the Super League 1 and 2 are
joined by a handful of All Age sides from divisions 1 and 2 in a knock out competition that
started in February, and concludes towards the end of the season in July. As we know, last
month saw Rovers overcome a
spirited Pennant Hills All Age
side 4-1 at Christie Park and the
draw has pitted the Rovers
against the might and power of
Gladesville Ravens on May 14th,

West Ryde Rovers were well represented at the GHFA academy

Monday evening. A tough 90 minutes of small sided games culminated in places being offered
to Andrew Baker, Alex Henry and Luke Sutton (U10) and Zach Smith (U9). Harry Lay and
Josh Lillicrap (U11) were also successful. Hopefully this is a good opportunity to step towards

Super League action
Nice day, shame about the score!
After a long pre-season full of fitness training (thanks
Josh), friendly games and the odd cup game, the squad
was geared up for their opening game of the Super
League season against newly promoted Ararat. Countless hours spent searching for peak physical perfection,
tactical analysis & technical adjustments all targeted the
first game…and then it rained and the game was called
off!!! Oh well, back to the Royal. Following the safe progression to the second round of the GHFA Cup, all eyes
were the focused on the draw to see who Rovers would
be meeting. The draw, held at GHFA HQ Christie Park
paired Rovers against neighbours Gladesville Ravens.
The Premier League side will be tough opposition for
Rovers but the boys will no doubt give a good account
of themselves on May 14th at Christie Park (kick-off
6.30pm).
A week later the squad finally kicked off the regular season against North Epping Rangers, the club that knocked
both grades out of the finals last year. Reserve Grade
battled and scrapped their way to a tight 1-0 win, whilst
PAGE 11
the First Grade game finished 2-0 to the visitors it was
an incredibly close game with Rangers the better at
taking their chances. Next up Rovers took the short
trip to Harold West to tackle Roselea, Reserve Grade
played well in patches but lacked composure in front
of goal in a 4-1 win. First Grade picked up their first
win of the season with a far from convincing 2-1 win.
Despite the 6 point Saturday, there is plenty of work
to be done for the squad to reach their potential.
The Easter break saw another unwanted disruption
after just 2 games as the squad looked to find their
rhythm in 2014. The following Saturday saw the boys
make the short trip to Morrison to take on bogey side
Gladesville Sharks. With several familiar faces in the
Sharks line-up, Reserve Grade failed to take to most
of an early dominance and goal to throw away the
game 4-1. First Grade started their game slowly , but
turned a narrow 1-0 half time lead into a comfortable
3-0 win.
The following day saw a small contingent of Rovers
kicking off their State Cup campaign at the un-godly
hour of 9am against Nepean side Glenmore Park.
Scoring just before the break, Rovers dominated the
second half to run out 5-0 winners. Interestingly Rovers have been drawn in the next round against
Revesby Rovers, the second time this year the clubs
will meet, and after Revesby’s 3-1 win in the Waratah
Cup West Ryde will be determined to exact revenge in
Round 2 of the “Battle of the Rovers”.

ready to make their debut on the shirts around the association over the weekend.
Some initial concerns about shirt sizing were quickly quashed, the newer shirts giving a more European muscle shirt
look, much favoured by the younger players, and the shirts were well received on their first run outs. If you would like
to sponsor a shirt, get in touch with sponsorship officer Bec at [email protected] - you’d be surprised how
cost effective it is. And your name will reach out to a huge audience. Go on, do it!
Rovers big brother scheme off and running
The Rovers big brother program is well and truly up and running, and has been very well received by players, coaches and Super League players alike. For those not familiar with this initiative, each Super League player is assigned to a junior team, and
participates in training a number of times over the season. Striker Ayman Jowaidi was clearly enjoying his stint with the Under
10 Division 1 team before Easter, defender Chris Becker proved an instant hit with the division 4 boys, and many of the Super
League boys were seen out training with their allocated junior teams. Some communication issues with cancelled training sessions and the early nature of junior football training times has made it quite tricky for some of the Super League boys, but the
concept has been a total and utter success.
The Super League brand is now gaining much more recognition amongst
the younger members of the club, with the flagship team now more visible
and more relevant. Expect some bumper crowds when Super League returns to Meadowbank, with the Super League matches attracting a healthy
contingent of juniors from their relative teams.
Again, well done to the Super League boys.

Kick Start : Kick Off
Not just football - a social event and a time to unwind in the park
A sunny afternoon greets the kick start season
After a rained out week, training got underway for the GHFA Under 6
and Under 7 teams at their new home of Meadowbank No 4 on a
beautiful sunny afternoon. Club president and committee members
were out in force to join a throng of parents who had all come down
to get a taste of life with West Ryde Rovers junior football in a new
and exciting era. The kids all had a blast in their first ‘real’ training
session, the coaches were suitably impressed with the guidance from
their Soccer Kick Start assistants, and the parents had a wonderful
time too, taking advantage of the beautiful weather to catch up with
Club president and beau oversee the first session of the season
friends and let siblings run around the park while their brothers
and sisters played. A big round of applause to everyone for
making this a successful start to the season, especially to Dave
Cooper for his work in bringing Soccer Kick Start to West Ryde
Rovers. As the temperature drops and the nights close in, Kick
Start continues for the duration of the season, and whilst there
may be a few less faces down watching training, the enthusiasm of the players is unfaltering. Hopefully training translates
to success on the field at the weekend and we will see Soccer
Kick Start continue for many years to come.
Go the Rovers!

Committee corner : come and join us
Sssshhhh - Rovers committee meeting in progress - the important issues are thrashed out
Changing rooms at Super League games are expected, so it was a surprise
when the door was opened to the change facility at LH Waud for the opening
fixture to find a huge amount of equipment and junk taking up the space.
Thanks to Matt Hanchard and Al McIntyre Clearing out the changing rooms at LH Waud
for the hard work in clearing out the change rooms for the next fixture.
The Committee meeting on Monday 28th April saw the return of club secretary
Lindsay Donald from a few weeks absence. The committee would like to thank club
president Karen Waud for taking the reins in this time and ensuring the smooth running of day to day Rovers life. Remember if you would like to join our committee,
there is always a spot for you. Just ask.
Our very own In Off The Post has found itself a few outlets, with West Ryde library
taking Edition 1 on to its shelves, and patrons at the Easter Parade being treated to a
handful of copies. Printing costs have been covered by some newsletter-only sponsorship, with hundreds of potential sponsors queuing for a spot in the coveted monthly
Rovers newsletter.

Competition time… ROVING ROVERS
Rover-seas and relaxing
A Rover needing support from a sign
Marylin was a fan, didn’t you know?
It’s competition time. We are looking for the most original photo of a piece of Rovers merchandise in an unusual location. The
best photo submitted before our next edition wins a West Ryde Rovers hoodie, so you can go on and outdo yourself in the
following edition. Don’t worry if you haven’t got any Rovers branded shirts, bucket hats, jackets or backpacks. Just pop down to
the canteen and buy some and you’ll have taken the first step to winning this years Grand Prize, which this year will be a Rovers Prize Pack containing merchandise, movie tickets and such like. Don’t think you have to be thousands of kilometres from
home; just get your thinking cap on and capture the moment; have your bucket hat and a mobile phone when you dance with
Beyonce in a nightclub, or when you bungee jump off a bridge in New Zealand. Send your entries to In Off The Post at :
[email protected] and your photo will appear in the next edition. See Facebook for competition rules.

Looking for a JP? Statutory Declarations, Affidavits, Certified True Copies, signing over traffic fines – there are
many occasions when you need a Justice of the Peace to witness
your signature. With new rules in place requiring JPs to justify
renewal of their license, it can be difficult to find one when you
need one. Rovers members requiring JP services are welcome to
give club stalwart Andy Harrison a call to arrange a mutually convenient time & he’ll take care of it for you.
