«It’s insane,» beams Armin Van Buuren when we tell
him that the world’s dance music fans have voted
him the No.1 DJ on the planet for the second year
running. «I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve it.»
He’s got to be kidding, surely. When he won last year
his crowning seemed more than worthy. But after the
past 12 months the Dutchman has enjoyed, 2007 now
looks like a mere warm-up. With immense solo gigs,
records charting across Europe, a great Ibiza residence, awards as the most important recording artist
in his homeland and a radio show listened to by - wait
for it - 27 million listeners, it’s enough to make the
rest of the Top 100 DJs hang up their headphones as
underachievers. And everyone who voted for him in
2007 should be proud of the part they played in this
amazing annum - his DJmag victory in 2007 has helped massively in Armin’s über-year. «It’s only affected
me in a positive way,» he says of his win 12 months
ago. «It’s opened doors that weren’t open before. On
the one hand, I’m still doing the same thing - I was
already working with the best promoters in the best
clubs around the world. But the whole No.1 thing is
magical for me - everyone looks at the DJmag list. It’s
a really, really good feeling.»
That good feeling started all the way back at the Top
100 DJs party last year when Armin played the winner’s set to a rapturous reception and he had some
very special guests watch him accept his award. Ben
Liebrand - a massive influence on Armin - was there,
as was his parents, who he’d flown in all the way
from Australia. «It was one of the highlights of my
life,» he grins. «I thought, ‘That’s it, I can die happy
now.’»
But things just got better. When Armin bagged the
top spot last year he was surprised that he was able
to do it without finishing his artist album, ‘Imagine’,
an opus he’d been working on for two years. There’s
no such worry this time around. It exploded in Holland, shooting straight to No.1 - the first time a dance
album has ever achieved the feat. Since then singles
like ‘In And Out Of Love’ have been clogging up the
charts in many European countries. That track features Sharon den Adel, the lead singer of Goth outfit
Within Temptation, a band who have themselves sold
around 10 million albums, making them the European
answer to Evanescence. Armin admits to being starstruck when the project came together. «I saw her on
TV and I called her the day after with shivering knees
because she’s like a diva in Holland,» he confesses.
The very next day she was knocking on his door.
«This big rock star was standing on my doorstep,»
Armin exclaims, as if still surprised that Sharon wanted to work with him. «I’ve been making dance music
for 15 years but producing for an artist like that is
a real challenge. When she was in the vocal booth
singing I got shivers all over my body.»
There were plenty more shivers when Sharon and
many of the other guest vocalists came together for
the latest in his Armin Only concerts, flying in from
all over the world. Tying in with the album launch, all
the cameras brought in to film the event for the live
DVD were put to good use when Holland’s equivalent
of the BBC decided they’d like to broadcast Armin
Only: Imagine live, another first for the country.
Around 250,000 people watched from their living
rooms, while another 18,000 went crazy in the venue
for Van Buuren’s extended session behind the decks.
«What I really enjoy is playing nine-hour sets because
I get to show the people that I also love more progressive records,» he says. «I love so many dance
tunes but when I do a two or three hour set usually
what I do - and what every DJ does - is play the big
tracks that are out there at the moment. When I
play nine hours I can play the records that I want to
play but I can’t when I play a festival or something.»
Armin stresses that the big concerts he plays are not
a way of raking in the cash. «To be honest, it doesn’t
make me a lot more money when I play a nine-hour
set,» he claims. «It’s not like I want to play to 15,000
people to just show off that I can play for nine hours.
It’s really that I save up all these records that I know
I can’t play normally. It gives me a lot of satisfaction.
It’s a lot of hard work but it’s also very rewarding
once I’ve done it.»
One of his most rewarding concerts came in an
unlikely form this year. Romania is fairly consistent
in its lack of rain so Armin thought that an open-air
concert would be a pretty fine idea. But the heavens
opened and the only thing heavier than the beats
was the fall of water from the sky. But the crowd
refused to be dampened and raved hard and happy
until three hours of downpour finally eased and the
stars came out. «It was incredible,» he recalls. «I’m
not talking about light rain - it rained cats and dogs
but the crowd just stayed.» Other gig highlights saw
two more Armin Only gigs in Australia, a great night
at Global Gathering and another eight-hour set at one
of his Amnesia residency sessions, where he also
played a house set with new mate Mark Knight.
But if you add up every dancer at every club, concert
and festival for the whole of the year it still doesn’t
touch the audience that listens to A State Of Trance
every week. According to the figures, 27 million
listeners tune in to Armin’s radio show. «That’s what
the radio department tell me,» he says sceptically.
«In May we signed a deal with a big radio station in
Brazil. We ask every station after a few months what
their ratings are, how many people actually tune in.
They told us that they were having 20 million liste-
ners on a Saturday night when my show is broadcast.
I find it hard to believe but they swear it’s true.» It’s
not bad for a show that Armin sometimes does in his
underwear from hotel rooms across the globe. But as
a round-up of everything that’s happening in trance
it’s second-to-none. Armin points out that many
shows don’t include his own tracks or those from
his Armada group of labels, but when that umbrella
organisation has grown to 21 imprints those tracks
are getting everywhere. No longer just a trance
company, artists like Simon & Shaker, Markus Schulz
and Stonebridge all contribute labels, making Armada
Holland’s Ministry of Sound.
It’s clear that Armin is doing great things not only
for the Dutch economy but also for the music scene,
something that was recognised at the highest level
this year. The person who has had the most impact
on Dutch music each year is given a BUMA Award
by the national copyright organisation. «It was an
incredible honour,» Armin says with pride. «I thought
it was a really big step towards the acceptance of
dance music in Holland.» It’ll sit rather nicely with
his recent Beatport award for Best Trance DJ, his
Top 100 DJs award for 2007, and now his second
confirmation as the No.1 DJ in the World, something
he’s characteristically modest about. «I don’t see it
as a contest,» he says. «I don’t see it that I’m better
than this DJ or that DJ, it’s just a really big honour to
be in this position. I’m such a big fan of a lot of the
DJs that are in the Top 100. I’m still shy to talk to
guys like Sasha and John Digweed and Sven Väth and
Carl Cox. It makes me very humble to be in a list with
these guys. I’m thrilled, you know. I don’t know what
to say.» You don’t have to say anything, Armin - the
clubbers have spoken.
Words: JAMES KENDALL
WESTBAM
The golden era of the rave scene in the 90s was marked by the
“Raving Society.” With huge events such as Mayday, electronic/
techno/dance music droned from virtually every car radio and naturally saw an explosion in clubs. A DJ from this era who had a
leading hand in this revolution was the legendary WestBam.
Olympic summer games in Seoul/South Korea (1988), to which he
was invited by the German Goethe institute as a German culture
contribution. In 1989, the publication of his LP “The Cabinet" broke
ground with its unique mixture of sampling and scratching - a mile
stone in club music.
As techno music gained worldwide exposure, WestBam provided
the soundtrack to this revolution, so to speak. He began his own
label, Low Spirit as well as the event Mayday, which quickly became synonymous with the German rave scene. Maximilian Lenz
a.k.a. WestBam rose to fame, even amidst the fiercely competitive
DJ and producer community. How did WestBam transcend all of
this to become an electronic music icon?
The nineties were WestBam’s most important and most successful
decade of his career. 1991 already he walked a completely new
way: Mayday.
His career as DJ began in 1983 as a resident in Odeon/Munster...
“I was 18 and in my home town Munster they had a free job. I
was so ambitious because of the new electronic music that I
wanted to play, but I could not mix then. And so I discovered
the DJ aspect in that one year,” says WestBam.
Back then he still worked under the name “Westphalia Bambaataa",
following his role model Africa Bambaataa, which he, however, abbreviated quickly as WestBam. This name stands out, and not only
represents his musical repertoire. It is a signature which set him
aside from other DJs.
Munster had become too small for this vision, so therefore he moved in 1984 to the West side of, Berlin, which was, at the time, still
divided. In his new home base, the “Metropol" he put new fire and
inspiration into DJing that made him become the most heralded DJ
of Berlin. While other DJs were simply putting one song after another, the pioneer spirit arose in WestBam, to combine the songs, to
mix and to give them his own style:
“At the very beginning there was new electronic music as
those of Fad Gadget. I did not want to play that one at all, but
I noticed that through cutting and looping of records I can
create new music, this style I took over from the Hip Hop DJs.
That for me was the next stage of the electronic music, which
is hard, very common and minimal. The sound was not there
yet, but it developed in the following 20 years. I wrote a text
about that, which was published," says WestBam.
“At this time the scene cross-linked itself and it was time for a
central festival. And it was the first of this kind,” said WestBam.
With the Mayday, one wanted to save the venue “DT 64" from
shutting down, which was an important function in the circulation
of techno music. The “Mayday" became a Big Rave of superlatives
on which the worldwide most wanted DJ’s celebrated together with
up to 34.000 visitors.
At this time everyone spoke of the “Raving Society", DJs became
Stars, which was not only reflected in a DJ pulpit as an altar but
their fees also shot up, because demand controlled the price. WestBam’s own records stormed the charts and those of his label Low
Spirit so that it was only a question of time that German techno
underground culture crashed, caused by commercialization. WestBam took this development as occasion to go new ways. In 1997
he cancelled the cooperation with Polydor and completely took over
the control of Low Spirit. Shortly afterwards he managed, with two
tracks at the same time, to be represented in the Top Ten of the
German sale charts with “Sonic Empire" (which hit #1 and sold
700,000 units) and “Sunshine" (the official Love Parade hymn).
Further highlights of this year were, without a doubt, the publication
of his book “Mixes, Cuts & Scratches" and the foundation of the
sub-label Electric Kingdom, with which he remembers his electronic
and unconventional roots. So he successfully signed acts as Lexy
& K. Paul, Hardy Hard, and DJ I.C.O.N. or collaborated with Africa
Islam as Mr. X & Mr. Y or Africa Bambaataa (I.F.O.).
In the present millennium WestBam was talked about particularly
through his album Right On (2002), including the hit single Old
School Baby, the innumerable Member's of the Mayday- and
Love-Committee hymns and the participation at the German prenomination of the Grand Prix d Eurovision (2004).
In this text WestBam called this new art form of the DJ-ing “Record-Art".
Of course, nothing lasts forever, and 2007 was the year of upheaval: He withdrew from the business of the Mayday and Low Spirit:
Not only do his fans share his musical opinions, but also other DJs
and their respective crowds. So he joined in 1985, with his schoolmate Klaus Jankuhn, one of the first DJ/Producer teams and published his first single “17-This is not a Boris Becker Song", which
already then caused a big sensation in this still small club scene.
However, a suitable label platform was missing, which is when then
founded Low Spirit.
“Our interest was an artistic at first. And these business things
were added then. It was not my life content, however to be rave
event manager or to manage labels. But now I founded a new
label, called “Bass Planet”, which on a new level follows up
with the “Record Art” concept. Here in fact it is about creating
something new out of different sound sources.” says WestBam
“This foundation was necessary for us. That was in 1987. We
were in this way the first independent label that sold records
through punk rock marketing new electronic DJ music. With the
singles “Monkey Say Monkey Do" and “Disco Germany" and the
general Acid movement in 1988 a great attention was drawn then
and so even Polydor [a major label] was interested and offered a
deal in 1989. We kept on being independent, but we at the same
time cooperated from this time on with a major. That was a prototype way, as many labels handle it today,” said WestBam.
Further important events of that decade were his appearance at the
Thanks to his pioneer work, WestBam is still one of the most asked
about and popular DJs from Germany. Who was allowed to experience him live, will see, what DJing really is all about:
“I love playing records, I am so to speak witness for my style and
I make confessions. I have fun doing it. And I can discover something new again and again, for my art and my life. As long as
people want to listen to me and I have fun I will continue.” says
WestBam
We thank WestBam for the interview and the management of the
disco Starlight (Chemnitz), which facilitated this.

BATTLE FOR WORLD SUPREMACY RESULTS
DMC WORLD DJ CHAMPIONSHIP 2008
For the second year running, the Great Rock n Roll Circus of Turntablism took place at the O2 in London.
BATTLE FOR WORLD SUPREMACY
Probably the most stressful of all the competitions, where each DJs has to battle his opponent in 2 x 90s.
To win this competition you don’t always have to be the best turntablist, but you do have to be clever, witty,
cunning and mostly lucky. Over the years, the best have been outplayed in the finals, and the likes of Troubl’,
Unkut or Or d’Oeuvre despite their favourite status have never won the crown. This year was going to be no
exception. The competition was dominated head and shoulder by Frenchman DJ Nelson and his battle against
the reigning world champion DJ Shiftee (USA) was going to get into history by being one of the best battle ever.
A mix of aggressive skills and humour was going to destroy Shiftee.
The public then thought that no one could beat Nelson, particularly when his next opponents in the quarter
and the semi finals were going to get the same punishment. In the Final, Nelson was to meet DJ Switch from
England. Switch had qualified with much difficulties, and his semi final against Bunta the Japanese Champion
was so tight, that every one thought that the home grown DJ had given it all. Little did we know.
Nelson was drawn to go first and carried on where he left previously but with a little less aggression. It was
nevertheless going to be enough to take the crown … until Switch knocked him down with a killer James Brown
routine that he had kept up his sleeve for the end.
The public and the jury immediately ‘switch’ their votes and the Englishman took rightly the crown.
Once again, the best DJ did not win, but all our congratulations to Switch who manages his battles and his
routines like a true World Champion.
1st: Switch (UK)
2e: DJ Nelson (France)
WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Second competition of the night: the World Team
Championship.
Mostly the back garden of the French with a win from
Birdy Nam Nam and four from C2C in the last 6 years.
It was won last year by the Japanese duo Kireek.
The defending Champion were going to battle seven
other countries and for the first time in the history of
DMC, teams were allowed to use digital technology
such as Serato, Virtual Vinyl, Mixvibes, Traktor …
This digital evolution was going to bring a lot of
wasted time and technical problems, with no artistic
benefits to counter it.
However the level of the competition was not bad
despite the disappointing sets of the Portugueses
and the Americans.
The serious competition was really starting with the
set of German champion Interplay. Coming in with a
great reputation, they were unfortunately let down by
…. their computers and had to start three time over.
Pity as their set sounded quite musical.
Goldfingers , the Spanish team came with a good
show , but lacking the originality they had previously.
A lot was expected of Bionc Stylus Crew, the English
Team but despite some good moments they did not
have the class or the original feel of the previous
English Champion , the Disablists.
The good surprise was going to come from the Italian
Intelvision, skilful and musical, respect to them for
their first appearance at the World level.
It was then clear that the World Title was going to be
decided between the French combo Traumateam and
the Reigning champion Kireek.
Opposite styles for these two teams, Traumateam
set was very technical and musical with a lot of risk
taking and a real scratch firework at the end . This
should have been enough to give them the title if
their sound would have been clean. However , their
mastering was faulty and it resulted in a lack of
punch and clarity for both the jury and the public.
The road was therefore wide open for Kireek to keep
their title. A good traditional Japanese music intro
, a drum n bass set to please the British crowd and
their stress less attitude was going to be enough to
win for the second year running.
Results :
1st: Kireek (Japan) - 37 points
2e: Traumateam (France) - 27 points
3rd: Intellivision (Italy) - 11 points
4th: Bionic Stylus Crew (UK) - 9 points
5th: Goldfinger Crew (Spain) - 6 points
6th: Angry Exs (USA) - 5 points
7th: Interplay (Germany) - 4 points
8th: Supa (Portugal) - 3 points
WORLD DJ CHAMPIONSHIP
The second day of the championship is the BIG ONE ,
the individual World title that all the DJs dream of.
This year it was dominated by DJ Fly (France) who
left nothing to chance. His style was tight, technical
and musical. No mistake, a perfect 6 minutes that
relegated far away his best opponents, the American
DJ Slyce and the Japanese DJ Coma.
The English champion DJ Skully was a bit disappointing but the future looks bright for the young
Norwegian DJ Final.
The night however belonged to one man only, DJ Fly
the new DMC World Champion.
Get his show on the DMC 2008 DVD.
1st: DJ Fly (France) - 41 points
2nd: DJ Slyce (USA) - 28 points
3rd: DJ Co-Ma (Japan) - 17 points

Dj
DJ FLY discovered the turntables and started to scratch at the age of 15, in 1998.
Influenced primarily by hip hop, DJ FLY moved on towards various musical styles like soul, jazz,
rock, and electronica.
His sets consist of original routines that can smoothly combine tracks from artists such as
A Tribe Called Quest and Rage Against the Machine.
His talent helped him cross the borders of his hometown, and DJ FLY then went conquering the
world with the same success. He has performed for events attracting large crowds such as the
Pur Mix at Bercy, NRJ Tour in Tahiti, International Festival of extreme sports in Tunisia, the fair
SIEL, and he’s performed solo ... and alongside artists such as:
Method Man, Redman, Mobb Deep, Nas, Akon, Grand Master Flash, Tony Touch, Netik, Rafik,
A-Trak, Dee Nasty, Crazy-B, Pone, Birdy Nam Nam, C2C…
Attracted by the scratch and technology since its inception, and inspired by such DJs as Q.Bert
and D-Styles, DJ FLY launches a new challenge and made its entry into the DJ competitions,
winning six French Cup, a DMC France Championship title, a bronze medal at the DMC World
Championship and finally the title of DMC World Champion.
Finally, always looking for new projects, DJ FLY moved into production. In 2004 he worked with
Mounir and formed the label Enterprise which was awarded a double gold for production on
Sinik’s first album and platinum for his second album.
He’s also the creator and member of the "Scratch Bandits Crew" (Lyon Collective DJs using
scratch as a rhythmic and harmonic way to recreate original compositions like a real group of
musicians)
He is now a teacher at the most famous DJ school in France : UCPA-AMS.

BIRDY NAM NAM
: MANUAL FOR A SUCCESSFUL RIOTING
'Manual for a successful rioting' is the title and the
programme of the new Birdy Nam Nam album.
But is it a riot or a revolution? At the very least it is an
evolution. A new style.
Right from the lead-in track, we are treated to electro
hip hop references that used to be the sole reserve of
Warp Record artists, acting as a 3-minute transition
between past and present working up to a finale of
synthesizer notes like a cry of mutation.
A new style, another Paris.
From Montmartre to the Grands Boulevards, two
names of Parisian metro stations to signify the distance travelled, from 'Abbesses' with its accordions
tuned in to the aesthetic of scratch music to 'Bonne
Nouvelle'.
The aptly named 'Bonne nouvelle' is indeed good
news, the declaration of a new shared manifesto.
The first few seconds offer a burst of free rock or free
jazz double bass, then drumming worthy of a punk
rock drummer, a synthesizer that Mirwais from Taxi
Girl would be proud of, a guitar riff and they're off: heavy threats in low frequencies, the tension is palpable.
Like a midnight graffiti raid on a railway station, terrifically contained adrenalin, the discretion of the operation so that the colours can finally emerge in the light
of day: 'War paint'.
Underground rumblings, howling bass, pressure.
The track of the same name is full of this underlying
tension: electric pleasures, a veritable pressure cooker, seething steam.
The heat smoulders beneath the safety valve, ready to
explode, and when it does we get 'Worried'.
Explosion, the end of oppression, the dance floor is on
fire, Birdy Nam Nam have hit upon the recipe of a new
Molotov cocktail.
Images crowd the mind, amused rebellion; violence is
a game with order. Call it hip hop or electro or stuff
or whatever.
Hooligans of musical marketing, music-lovers of disorder: rock that ass.
And if you don't like it, 'Shut up'… their own brand of
booty bass dedication, not the slightest bit macho,
give 'Homosexuality': another dedication but the opposite this time, to another crazy genius with lots of
hair. Male humour.
These guys are free and without taboos: 'Trans Boulogne Express' is not an ode to Kraftwerk, but a nervy
and daring dive of vitality into the infamous dark undergrowth of Western Paris…
Because Birdy Nam Nam takes us to another Paris.
That's clear.
And clear like a sound is clear.
And full of percussion.
Full of percussive uppercuts, perhaps thanks to this
vast experience that they have of making music by
hand, right down to the fingertips of their turntablist
past.
And judging by the riot in the crowd at Olympia during their gig in September 2008, with Yuksek creating
fireworks in the first part just like James Coburn in
'A fistful of Dynamite', (this explosive young genius
of French electro produced the entire album), we can
safely say that 'Manual for a successful rioting' will
galvanise even the most disillusioned ear drums.
'Manual for a successful rioting' is a concentration of
liberation.
Liberation from certain shackles that were perhaps
restricting the personalities of Crazy B, Lil' Mike, Need
and Pone.
So they have thrown themselves into the scrum like a
cat among the pigeons. Or like taking the plunge in a
parachute jump, the last track, gymnastics in the wide
expanse of air… A feeling of freedom.
Birdy Nam Nam have found themselves.

album with his partner Sebastian, and a remix of the Eurythmics
classic "Sweetdream”.
AXWELL
Axwell’s music has an innate feel for the dancefloor
that betters most others; his versatility is even more
impressive. Axwell’s material is so varied, yet never
fails to rock big time. His music has so much energy,
soul and depth and he makes music for DJs.
Axwell was born in Sweden.
At nine-year-old Axel Hedfors first takes up the drums,
before progressing to computers and music software
when most kids are riding bikes and using jumpers for
goal posts. Completely self-taught, he leans to play
keyboards and programme beats.

Axel releases acid techno tracks made with Fasttracker2 software
under the pseudonym Quazar (of Sanxion). He also participates in
video games soundtracks.
1999

2000
After dabbling with Latin-infused house under the guises of Mambana (with Afro Medusa singer Isabel Fructuoso) and then Jetlag
(with vocalist Noel McKoy and co-producer Brian Tappert), Axwell
again changes stances. Hel finds is house sound, his productions
stature, but he is also demanded as a remixer.
2002
The catalyst is pairing with Robbie Rivera and songstress Suzan
Brittan on the track ‘Burning’.
2004
Axwell enjoys a pan-European hit with vocalist Errol Reid on ‘Feel
The Vibe’. Positiva re-released the song as ‘Feel The Vibe (‘Til The
Morning Comes)’ with additional vocals supplied by Tara McDonald.
A top 20 UK chart position followed.

play at his Radio 1 Week End in Ibiza, the UK biggest Dance Radio
show of the year, at that!
2005

mixes more than 130 times in the year. Then he stands out as the
most known and recognized French DJ in the world. The 2nd Volume of the compilation «F*** Me I’ m Famous!» is released, while

Away’), Deep Dish (‘Dreams’), Pharrel Williams (‘Angel’), Madonna
(‘Jump’), Nelly Furtado (‘Pomiscuous’), Bob Sinclar (‘I Feel For
You’) and Faithless (‘Music Matters’).
With Steve Angello, he retools Bronski Beat’s ‘Smalltown Boy’ into
‘Tell Me Why’ as Supermode that peaks at number 13 in the UK.
Axwell launches his own label: Axtone. He works with Sebastian
Ingrosso a remix of Ernesto Vs Bastian’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’,
before delivering their original production, ‘Together’. While with
Eric Prydz the two joins forces to produce ‘123’ and then ‘321’ under
their Axer alias for Eric’s Pryda Friends label.
2007
His single, ‘I Found U’, tops every dance chart (Buzz, Coolcuts,
Music Week Dance Chart etc) and raises number six in the UK (it
also hit the Top 10 in Holland).
The across-the-board success of ‘I Found U’ also sees the Positiva
release crowned DJ mags’ Record of the Year, while the public similarly votes it their favourite song of 2007 on Steve Smart’s Kiss
FM show in London and Anton Power’s Juice FM show in Liverpool.
It also picks up the prestigious Track of the Season at the DJ

ARMIN VAN BUUREN
In 2008, Armin has been named number one in the
prestigious DJ Top 100 poll – voted for by over 350,000
people across the world, and an indication of his prolific output over the 10 years he’s been DJing and producing. Being the official World’s Best DJ is just one of
his many achievements, but the driving force behind
his success is an overriding passion for dance music.
Armin was born in 1976 in Leiden, Holland.
1986:
His mum wins a pc. ‘So as a little nerdy kid I was writing my own
basic programs, and learnt about the technology from there’.
He progressed from making low-profile mix tapes for friends to
higher profile mixes when he discovered experimenting with different sequences on his pc through his uncle. ‘I was so stunned by
what I saw him doing, that I got addicted to creating music right
there and then! I loved dance music immediately – this great rebellious sound that was so
different’.
In the early days, Armin thinkst it is wise to have something extra in
case the DJ’ing didn’t work out. So he studied for a law degree. The
final year of his course is inevitably stretched as he juggles his studies with his increasingly hectic schedule; it takes him three years
to graduate, but his determination made him succeed.
2001-2008
Armin hosts a weekly radio show ‘A State of Trance’, which mostly
consist of trance and other genres. Selected tracks are announced
during the show in order to help promote new artists and releases.
2003
Armin’s desire to showcase more of the great music he hears, along
with the number of people sending him tracks they wanted to release, led to the obvious step of starting his own label, Armada.
2005
Armin holds for the first time in The Netherlands, “Armin Only”. He
is the DJ and conductor for a light, music, laser, video and fireworks
show with singers, vocalists and musicians sharing the stage for an
intense 9 hr. performance.

Armin receives a lot of awards: ‘Best Album’ for artist album Shivers’ at both the Dutch Release Dance Awards and the prestigious
Dutch Edison Awards; ‘Best Compilation’ for ‘A State Of Trance’,
in 2006, claiming the ‘Best European DJ’ award in 2007 and ‘Best
Mix Radio Show’ at the Miami Winter Music Conference in 2006
and 2007, for his weekly radio show ‘A State Of Trance’; a 5th year
residency in Ibiza at Amnesia and over 50,000 downloads every
week from podcasting high end chart-bothering positions all over
the world for singles, albums and compilations , with single ‘Rush
Hour’ used as the theme tune to the UEFA European Youth Championship; the #1 entry in the Dutch album charts with his artist album ‘Imagine’, the #1 entry of the DVD registration of ‘Armin Only
‘ Imagine’
2008
Armin is given the “Buma Cultuur Pop Award”, the most prestigious
Dutch music award. This is followed by being voted as the Best
Trance dj/producer in Beatport Music Awards in March.

FUTUREBOUND
FUTUREBOUND
FUTUREBOUND
From the very outset of dance culture, and right up to the present day, Brendan Collins, AKA DJ / Producer
Futurebound, has steadily developed an almost unsurpassable reputation for tearing up dancefloors on a worldwide scale.
Whether he is destroying venues such as Fabric (London), Womb (Tokyo), or in the studio, you know what you’re
getting with the sounds of Futurebound. Born and bred in Liverpool, the cultural and musical epicentre of the
North of England, Futurebound route to the top of his profession reads like a concise history of dance music.
After the first illegal raves he attended in 1989, Futurebound went onto pursue his passion for dance music,
with DJs such as Fabio, Grooverider, Mickey Finn & Top Buzz serving as early influences.
From this, Futurebound secured a home town residency in 1991, warming up for the likes of Carl Cox, Grooverider and Sasha, his first real break into DJing. Steadily the emerging influence of breakbeats grew on Futurebound, leading him to book names such as LTJ Bukem, Goldie, Ray Keith and 4 Hero for his own parties in
the early nineties, and later lead him to start the notorious X events in 1999, some of which still rank as some
of most important parties in Liverpools clubbing history. His skills didnt just stop with DJing and promotion
either. Since 1993 Futurebound has been stamping his distinctive, rolling, peak time sounds on vinyl, initially
with local producers. Inevitably however, more high - profile production and remix collaborations followed with
the likes of J Majik. Matrix, Digital & Adam-f. With his productions being released on imprints such as Infrared,
Timeless, Moving Shadow, Metro and Frequency, and receiving heavy support over the years from the scenes
hierarchy, the time seemed right for Futurebound to expand his repertoire once again, by infusing his reputation
on an entire imprint.
Enter VIPER RECORDINGS.
2003 saw the birth of Viper, started by Futurebound
himself. The label has so far spawned eight releases
of the highest quality, with the first, Blind Cobblers
Thumb by Futurebound & Jaquan, achieving instant
anthem status, and was more than ably backed by the
monstrous Pied Piper .
7 further releases have followed, spanning a plethora
of D&B styles, and have featured the likes of J-Majik
& Wickaman's Fleshwound, Baron's slamming remix
of Blind Cobblers thumb, Matrix & Futurebound's funk
fuelled monster Strength 2 Strength, as well as the
mighty Circuit Breakers project which saw Futurebound pull in top draw tracks from State of Mind,
Moving Fusion, Entity, Probe & Sylo, Jaquan & Futurebound himself released in November 06 was an Excellent 12 from D&Bs new golden boys The Brookes Brothers and moving into 2007 saw viper release its first
album, as Futurebound & Matrix release their hugely
anticipated album ‘Universal Truth’, which has been
tipped by many in the industry as album of the year.
Following on from ‘Universal Truth’ and Futurebound
together with Matrix have been drafted into remix
none other than Justin Timberlake’s ‘Love Stoned’ for
Sony/BMG as well turning in a blinding remix for Nu
Tone’s ‘System’ track. Others highlights are the ‘Universal Truth’ remix e.p and a forthcoming ‘Matrix &
Futurebound in the mix compilation’.

Could you tell us more about the release of your new
album ?
How are you conceiving it and what is the direction
you're taking ?
Well at the moment it’s all work in progress, but yeh
it’s definitely coming on strong. It won’t be a million
miles away from the sound of the last album‘Universal
Truth’, but it’s definitely got some sick & twisted bassline business happening on this project.
I’m actually in the middle of two albums the other is
the Viper album which will feature brand new and exclusive cuts from all the crew as well as a mix cd from
yours truly which shall follow the release of the Vinyl.
Did the Remix of Justin Timberlake open new doors for you ?
I think any time you work on a project for artists as big
as J.T it can really help to put you in the spotlight and
open you up to a whole new audience. Saying that you
still have to come with the goods.
We were asked to do a DnB remix of the track but the
vocals weren’t sounding to good at that tempo and in
the end we did a house mix of it, which the guys at
Sony loved.
What are your favourites places to play ?
Ooooh, that’s a hard one, there’s so many great
places I go to around the world that go off. But regular spots that I play at that always get a guaranteed
wired crowd and phat sound system would have to be
‘Womb’ in Tokyo and ‘Chibuku Shake Shake’ in my hometown Liverpool.
The 10 records you'would never go without to a gig ?
1. In Deep - Last night a dj saved my life
2. Matrix & Futurebound – American Beauty
3. Nu Tone & Natalie Williams –
System (Matrix & Futurebound Remix)
4. J-majik – Spaced Invader
5. Ram Trilogy - Titan
6. Futurebound – Let it go
7. Matrix & Futurebound – The Edge
8. High Contrast – If we ever
9. Futurebound V’s Brookes Brothers – Dawn Treader
10. Shock One – Shock One E.P
Your favourites DJs (all style) ?
Yousef (U.K), Dj Aki (Japan), Shock One (Australia),
Felix Da House Cat (U.S)

Based in Tokyo, Makoto Shimizu, better known as simply Makoto, is Japan's chief Drum & Bass ambassador.
After completing an Acoustic Engineering major at Nippon University, Makoto first signed with LTJ Bukem's
legendary Good Looking Records back in 1999.
Since then he has gone from strength to strength, releasing a long string of quality music in the form of
singles and EP's, but also on the famous 'Earth' and 'Progression Sessions' compilation albums. 2003 saw the
release of his much anticipated debut album 'Human Elements'. This album was widely praised as the transition of 70's Soul into the 21st century. Also "Progression Sessions Japan Live 2003" with Deeizm, recorded
live from Space Lab Yellow in Tokyo was an absolute gem.
Makoto is now ready to spread his wings. Original music is both already released and also forthcoming on
labels such as Renegade Recording, Liquid V, Bingo, Hospital and Innerground. Add to this his second album
'Believe in My Soul', which was released on Good Looking in 2007, and the future is looking bright for the
Tokyo native.
As for deejaying, Makoto, together with Deeizm MC has traveled across the world (the U.K., Europe, America,
Brazil, Australia, Asia and Japan are just some of the places they have visited) and has become one of the
most sought-after deejays on the Drum&Bass circuit. Makoto's sets are characterised by the same jazzed-out

When did you start your professional career?
I can't remember exactly, but around 1998....
Why are you using the Ortofon Concorde Digitrack
makes for with your Serato Scratch Live?
I always take my own needles for serato to each gigs. It's
very important and the only problem I would encounter with
Serato would be to have bad needles. Concorde Digitrack is
especially made for reading time coded vynil, so I can really
trust this needle ! And it looks really cool too!
What percentage of your live sets are you playing
with Serato?
100% , I don't think I could go back to the old way anymore...
What do,you think of the drum’n’bass scene?
It's really spreading all over the world now.
When I started drum'n'bass, it was really a London thing, but
now you can hear drum'n'bass anywhere in the world.
What do, you listen at home?
Jazz and Soul
What are your influences?
70's Soul
What are you projects?
I'm starting my own label called "Human Elements" this year
and it is really exciting.

DJ ALADYN & DJ MYKE
MEN IN SKRATCH
THE REVERSE
Four times winners of DMC Italy Championship. Four
times finalists at DMC World DJ Championship in London.
Second place at ITF Eastern Emisphere in Prague.
In 2006 they release the album “The Reverse”, produced
by Copasetik Recordings in London and mixed at Abbey
Road’s Studios by Nigel Godrich from Radiohead. The British magazine Hip Hop Connection welcomes this event
saying: “Frank Zappa meets Grand Wizard Theodore”. For
Rolling Stone it is “the most important album of the year”.
The single, Immagine 05, is a gift-desacralization only for
turntables to the music icon, and it is remixed Leeroy
Thornhill. In fact among the fans of this project there is
the band Prodigy that want them as special guests for
their Italian tour “Their Law – The Singles Tour”. The
same year The Reverse is the most significant element of
Umbria Jazz Festival’s playbill.
In 2009 DJ Myke and DJ Aladyn are going to release a new album. ALkeMY 57, a real sound charade by the two djs that exchange rhythmic sensibilities and musical intuitions. This project has
been achieved with the participation of Svedonio, who worked on the music adaptations with
both djs and shares the project The Reverse, and Saturnino, one of Italy’s best musicians, who
works with Jovanotti and tours with dj Aladyn with a dj set which is a contamination between
bass and turntable.
ALkeMY 57 is a surprising travel through the sound of Men In Skratch, with all its particular
contaminations. But most of all in ALkeMY 57 lives the precious bequest of live djing and turntablism, to let head and legs move without control.
The album is furthermore adorned with a rich and surprising list of featuring:
FURILLA member of Men In Skratch’s crew, dj LATO ex UOMINI DI MARE, legendary band of the
Italian hip hop underground, with FABRI FIBRA.
BEASTIE BOYS that with a funny “turntablistic” skit enrich the alchemic alembic.
MASTER T, talented musician of electronic music of the band CAYOROSSO.
RASTEA already with Meninskratch and Svedonio for the live project of The Reverse and then
CRIS, electronic musician who works at an online portal ( HYPERLINK "http://www.BREAKS.it"
