Notes from the President & CEO
Telling Our Local Stories
April gets off to an exciting start with new productions from our partnership with
WILL. Inspired by the national series, Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies, our
production teams are working together to tell the stories of doctors, scientists and
patients right here in Central Illinois who are making incredible strides in cancer
research and treatment. Tune in Thursday, April 2 starting at 8 p.m. for the premiere of
these three local specials.
We are also pleased to bring a bit of local history to the airwaves in partnership with
Caterpillar Inc. Softball season starts April 9 at 7 p.m. on WTVP as we premiere a
new program on The Caterpillar Dieselettes, CAT’s award-winning women’s fast-pitch
softball team.
And I’m told that not even new seasons of Call the Midwife, Mr. Selfridge and Wolf
Hall on Masterpiece can beat the drama of the bidding action during the WTVP
Auction. I’m looking forward to my first time on the Auction floor and encourage all
of you to “watch, bid & buy” April 23-26.
Thank you to all of you who called in
during our on-air membership drive. Your
continued investment in WTVP provides
daily dividends for the entire community.

series, Cancer: The Emperor of All
Maladies.
Living with Cancer in Central Illinois centers around three half-hour
broadcast programs that will premiere
Thursday, April 2 at 8 p.m.
“Strategic Treatment” follows doctors
and patients during innovative procedures and treatment plans being used

Henry VIII’s
Wolf Hall
Internationally acclaimed actor Mark
Rylance and Emmy-winner Damian
Lewis (Homeland) star as Thomas
Cromwell and King Henry VIII in
Wolf Hall. This six-hour miniseries
is adapted from of Hilary Mantel’s
best-selling Booker Prize-winning
novels: Wolf Hall and its sequel,
Bring Up the Bodies., which chart
the meteoric rise of the brilliant and
enigmatic Cromwell in the Tudor
court — from blacksmith’s son to
Henry VIII’s closest advisor.
Told from Cromwell’s perspective,
Wolf Hall follows the complex
machinations and back room
dealings of this pragmatic and accomplished power broker who must
serve king and country while dealing
with deadly political intrigue, Henry
VIII’s tempestuous relationship with
Anne Boleyn and the religious upheavals of the Protestant reformation.
A historical drama for a modern
audience, this unromanticized
re-telling lifts the veil on the
Tudor middle class and the internal
struggles England faced on the brink
of Reformation. At the center of it
all is Cromwell, navigating moral
complexities, trapped between his
desire to do what is right and his
instinct to survive.
Wolf Hall on MASTERPIECE airs
Sundays, April 5-May 10 at
9 p.m. with encores on Thursdays
at 9 p.m. except during the WTVP
Auction. Episode 3 will not encore
and episode 4 airs only on Thursday, April 30 at 9 p.m.

Caterpillar
Dieselettes
They were the “Girls of Summer.”
Representative of a day when ballplayers called each other nicknames
like Pepper, Cotton and Cowboy
-- and yet far ahead of their time.
These young ladies - even girls - were
not in a league of their own. They
had corporate and community support, status and rabid fans. Recruited
from their family farms and small
towns all over the Midwest, these
young players came to Peoria - and
Caterpillar - looking for a better life.
But what they found was more. They
found a sisterhood in the Caterpillar
Dieselettes - one that would last
decades and spanned far beyond
the ball field. They would become
world-renowned and eventually
the longest continuous women’s
fast-pitch softball team in the United
States, boasting multiple players to be
inducted into the National Softball
Hall of Fame.
Caterpillar Dieselettes: The Girls
of Summer, a new Caterpillar Inc.
production, takes viewers on a fascinating journey of nearly eighty years
of softball excellence by a team that
brought an international spotlight to
Central Illinois—and plays on, even
today. Written by Mike Dimmick,
the film features rare films and
photos from the team’s heyday along
with new interviews from the players
themselves.
Caterpillar Dieselettes: The Girls

Last Days in
Vietnam
During the chaotic final days of the
Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon,
the South Vietnamese resistance
crumbled. American officers on
the ground faced a moral dilemma:
follow official policy and evacuate
U.S. citizens and their dependents
only, or ignore orders and save the
men, women, and children they
had come to value and love in their
years in Vietnam. At the risk of their
careers and possible court-martial, a
handful of individuals took matters
into their own hands. Engaging in
unsanctioned and often makeshift
operations, they waged a desperate
effort to evacuate as many South
Vietnamese as possible. The story of
these unlikely heroes and the people
they saved unfolds in the Oscar®nominated American Experience:
Last Days in Vietnam. Directed and
produced by Rory Kennedy, the film
premieres Tuesday, April 28 from
8-10 p.m. in conjunction with the
40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon.
Other specials airing this month
offering new perspectives on one of
the nation’s longest wars include My
Lai: American Experience on April
21 at 8 p.m., The Draft and Dick
Cavett’s Vietnam on April 27 at 9
and 10 p.m. respectively, and The
Day the ’60s Died on April 28 at
7 p.m. This slate of programs will
culminate in the 2017 premiere of
Ken Burns’s and Lynn Novick’s The
Vietnam War.

4 April 4 & 5—Spring Fling Spring is definitely in the air…tulips, daffodils, Passover,
Easter. The weather is warming up and we are enjoying the reawakening of nature.
Join P. Allen Smith, Burt Wolf, Katie Brown and other lifestyle experts and welcome the
beauty of the season.
4 April 11 & 12—Craftsman’s Legacy Host Eric Gorges takes us across the country to talk to men and women
about their passion for creating magnificent handcrafted pieces. Learn what drives these artisans to construct
intricately detailed pieces in modern times.
4 April 18 & 19—Boston Strong City of Champions …Cradle of Liberty…Boston is front and center today! Laura
McIntosh shows us the freshest markets and delicious food, Tommy Mac demonstrates how to make a memory box,
and the “Feast” moves to Duxbury, Massachusetts, where oysters are on the menu.
4 April 25 & 26—On the Farm From the fields of Wisconsin to the rooftops of New York, see what’s growing down
on the farm. Chef Ian Knauer takes us to his own personal dairy farm. And Katie Brown shows us the other side of
farming—at her local farm stand.
