Writer-inResidence
2016-2017
MARGARET CHRISTAKOS
Office hours and programs will be
announced in the fall.

Two monarch butterflies that were raised, tagged and released from Landon
Branch last September were recovered in Mexico. This is a journey of about 3,300
kilometers! Landon’s butterflies were tagged by local expert Bruce Parker (read his
story on page 46). These tags were recovered in February and March of this year
from the El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary, a remote biosphere in Central Mexico. The
average weight of an adult Monarch is .50 gms. These Monarchs weighed .68
gms and .74 gms. upon release, which likely contributed to them completing this
incredible journey.
London Public Library has been raising and releasing Monarchs for more than a
decade. As fewer than 1% of all Monarchs reach adulthood in the wild, raising and
releasing can play an important role in protecting this species. Librarians Carolyn
Doyle (Landon) and Susan Price (Cherryhill) have provided pivotal support to our
Monarch programs over the years and this year are being recognized for their work
by local environmental groups.
We’ll be raising Monarchs from egg to adult at our Byron, Cherryhill and Landon
branches this summer (approximately June through September). Drop by to
observe these Monarchs as they so miraculously eat, grow and morph into beautiful
butterflies!

MARGARET CHRISTAKOS is a
widely published, award-winning poet,
fiction author, critic and creative writing
instructor. She has published nine
collections of poetry including Multitudes
(2013) and a novel, Charisma (2000).
She led Influency: A Toronto Poetry
Salon from 2006 to 2012. Her collection
of creative memoir, Her Paraphernalia:
on Motherlines, Sex/Loss/Blood & Selfies
was published this spring.
The Writer-in-Residence program is cosponsored by: Western University’s Faculty
of Arts and Humanities, Department of
English and Writing Studies, Department
of Visual Arts and Department of Women’s
Studies and Feminist Research; the James
A. Marjorie Spenceley Fund and London
Public Library donors.

THE REVITALIZATION OF YOUR
CENTRAL LIBRARY HAS BEGUN!
On May 7, a new entrance into the Library from the Passageway was created
making it easy to quickly find our main desk. On the second floor, the round “pods”
were removed and will be replaced with an improved study room arrangement in an
upcoming phase. Construction hoarding was installed around the north (Dundas
Street) side of the first floor and surrounding the escalators on all floors.

NEW SPACES

Does not reflect final furnishing and colour
choices.
You’ll find our Teen Annex on the 2nd floor. Our main floor service desk now offers
“Welcome” services such as parking validation and can help you get started with
your visit to Central. We’d be happy to help you find what you need!
Behind the hoarding, our construction crew is hard at work making some great
changes to our first floor spaces, including creating a magazine and newspaper
lounge and a “flex” space in the former café area.
Design rendering of stairs from 1st floor
WHAT’S NEXT?
Central Library will close for heavy construction work for several weeks in May
and June as the escalators are removed and the large, structural steel needed
for construction of the stairs is put in place. You can visit Pop Up Central, our
temporary location in Citi Plaza, when Central Library is closed for construction.
Details about closure dates and Pop Up Central hours can be found on the back
page. Regular hours resume at Central on Saturday, June 25 if construction
remains on schedule.
Design rendering of stairs from 1st floor
We expect work on the first phase of construction to continue into September.
The second phase, which will start later this fall, will include exciting changes to
the Children’s Library and the south side of the second floor. Our goal with all
phases of construction is to keep our services and resources as available to you as
possible. You can find more information about the Central Revitalization and stay
up to date on any changes to hours, services or programs on our website:

Beacock Transforms
Beacock Branch celebrated their grand re-opening on February 13 after closing in
January for a facelift. Improvements to this busy branch included creating more
open spaces to work, plug in and connect as well as new paint, carpet, furniture
and an accessible service desk. The community clearly loves the changes to their
neighbourhood hub.

MY
LIBRARY
BRUCE’S
STORY
MY KIDS
GREW UP WITHOUT
THE
BENEFIT
we knew little
of the monarch’s
migratory process
until fairly
recently
OF TELEVISION
“We loved walking to our
neighbourhood library
branch to borrow movies.
Although my kids are now
grown, I continue to visit
the library several times a
week.” Bruce Parker has had
a relationship with London
Public Library
for many years,
delivering popular
presentations
and providing
expertise
and
larvae for
Monarch
raising
stations
at several
library
locations.
Bruce Recommends:
www.monarchwatch.org
Based at the University of
Kansas, Monarch Watch
is a non-profit education,
conservation and research
program.
When the population of
monarchs started dropping
several years ago, many more
people became interested
in studying, tagging and
recovering tagged Monarchs.
The population has continued
to drop for the past decade
and awareness and action
at many levels is required to
conserve Monarch habitats
and resources.
Guy with a Butterfly Net
BRUCE PARKER is a retired registered nurse
and an active citizen scientist. Once known as
“that guy with a butterfly net”, Bruce, who is
licensed through the MNR, is now a sought-after
speaker and continues to study the Monarch’s
migratory process and journey.
Hooked on Monarch Science
Spurred by his daughter’s
interest, Bruce connected
with Monarch Watch in
1998. He and his daughter
purchased 25 Monarch
tags their first year, took
notes and got hooked on
Monarch science. Over
the years, 23 Monarchs
PAGE 46 • www.lpl.ca • summer 2016
tagged by Bruce have been
recovered in Mexico. He
couldn’t have been more
excited than he was this
February when 2 monarchs
raised at our Landon Branch
were recovered in Mexico
(see story on page 3).
Bruce can be found
at Hawk Cliff
on mid-September weekends
where enthusiasts and
experts gather to observe
a wide variety of migratory
species. He posts reports
of his observations to the
Monarchs Migrating
Through Ontario Facebook
group. Bruce also generously
tags the Monarchs raised at
our Landon Branch. We are
raising Monarchs at several
library locations this summer.
