In 1967 the Lladró brothers purchased a small
porcelain factory very close to the city of Valencia
and began collaborating with the best local
porcelain artisans. The popularity of the brand
in the USA spread rapidly, confirming it as an
internationally renowned brand. This led the
Lladró brothers to search for a different business
name and to work towards introducing themselves
into other international markets. NAO borrowed
its name from the old sailing boats from the time
of Columbus, and symbolizes a return journey to
origins, conveying creativity, skill and magic. This
is how the dream of the Lladró brothers came into
being: to make porcelain figurines affordable for
lovers of beauty.
Today, the Lladró brothers original small workshop
has now become a permanent fixture in the world
of artistic creation and brings joy to collectors.

the Zodiacs form a
stunning Circle of Life
The Zodiac figures have been created
in unglazed fine porcelain, according to
Royal Copenhagen’s famous traditions of
craftsmanship. Each sculpture is composed of
several individual parts, which are carefully
assembled by hand. Beautiful, astonishing
and each capturing in its own way all that is
magical and extraordinary about the zodiac.
Over the course of a year, the Sun passes all
the constellations of the Zodiac to complete
the circle of life. In each of the male zodiac
figures, energy and charisma are captured in
these powerful sculptures. The female zodiac
figures are both sensual and innocent. Each
female figure conveys vibrancy and beauty in
velvety white porcelain.

MONUMENTAL
DOULTON CERAMICS
Among the many highlights at the Wiener Museum of
Decorative Arts are the monumental vases which were
made for the world’s fairs of the 19th and 20th centuries.
British potteries vied with each other to steal the show
at these international exhibitions producing the biggest
and best pieces possible. Henry Doulton believed in the
power of these events to promote his products more
than any other British potter. He urged his artists to “be
first or not at all, for to be second is to be nowhere.”
They rose to his challenge with magnificent pieces of
ceramic art which won the lion’s share of the awards.
For the Philadelphia exhibition of 1876, Henry Doulton
shipped 1,500 pieces across the Atlantic to introduce his
new Lambeth art pottery to the American market and
he was awarded five first class awards. The pottery’s
display at the World Columbian Exhibition in Chicago
in 1893 was described as “Henry Doulton’s greatest
triumph”. Doulton took seven of the highest awards in
Chicago, the largest number granted to any pottery.
The Lambeth studio artists excelled themselves with
enormous Faience vases for Chicago and one of the
largest, standing 54 inches tall, is now on display at
WMODA. The ornate shape was designed by Mark V.
Marshall and brilliantly painted with flowers by Florence
Lewis. Doulton’s Burslem Studio made its debut in
Chicago with an impressive collection of ivory and raised
gold vases in the Spanish style, many of which can be
seen in the museum. Charles J. Noke began his career
at Doulton modeling exhibition pieces for Chicago and
some of his finest works are in the Wiener collection,
including the spectacular Diana, Dante and Love vases.
A selection of impressive bone china vases and urns painted with flowers,
figures and landscapes by some of Doulton’s most celebrated artists.
Prominent pieces of Doulton faience and stoneware
from the Chicago exhibition of 1893 on display.
One of the most impressive pieces now on display at the WMODA is Doulton’s
“Diana” vase from the great Chicago Exhibition of 1893. Standing five feet
high, the vase was a collaborative effort by Doulton’s most talented artists.
The Burslem Studio continued to enjoy exhibition
triumphs in the early 1900s. Only the most talented
artists were entrusted with decorating the show pieces,
which were embellished with 22 carat gold by expert
gilders. Splendid bone china vases and urns were
painted with flowers, figures and landscapes by David
Dewsberry, George White and Charles Beresford
Hopkins. Come and see all of these great show-stoppers
at WMODA this Fall.
- Louise Irvine, Executive Director
The museum is open to the public,

A fine collection of monumental and imposing Minton Majolica centerpieces,
jardinières, vases and sconces and are on display at the WMODA.
A major “showstopper” at the WMODA is the Dale Chihuly glass gallery. Chihuly has redefined the way the
world views the medium of glass. Color and form are inseparable as each piece appears to glow from within.
