I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Memorial
Day Weekend. The “dog days of Summer” are upon
us, but remember, “it’s not hot, it’s just the humidity”!
This last month Bay Area Houston Economic
Partnership, our Chamber, many business owners and
citizens were fighting for you and me. The annual trip
of Citizens for Space Exploration was held and our
own President, Cindy Harreld represented the Clear
Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber
also sponsored a college student to participate in this
annual trip, which is who the congress members enjoy
MICHAEL DIVINE
visiting the most. This year, more so than others, in the
Visiting Angels,
recent history was extremely important concerning the Living Assistance Services
current status of Human Space Exploration. Over 350
representative and senate offices were visited by this mass ascension on Washington,
with participation from all over the U.S., and not just NASA states. If you know someone
who joined this trip, pass along a very big “Thank You”! If you have not yet visited
goboldly.org, please do so immediately to send your U.S. Senators and Representatives
a letter supporting NASA.
The Chamber’s 23rd Annual Business Expo with a theme of “Boost Your Business”was
a great success. Thanks to our Silver Sponsors, Berkeley Eye Center, FantaSea Yacht
Charters, and CHRISTUS St. John Hospital; along with the Bay Area Citizen, media
sponsor and JSC Federal Credit Union for sponsoring the $500 Grand Prize Drawing. A
special “Thanks” to the Expo Chair Kay Simpson of Hearst Media Services. This event is
always well supported and attended by our chamber members and the community,
this year proved to the be the same. We had quite a few new businesses participate
this year, and a wonderful lunch was provided by 888 Bistro.
Next up, is our annual “No Experience Necessary” Bowling Tournament on June 2nd.
This sold out event is one of the most popular for the Chamber. You can still advertise
your business on one of the 40 lanes available or donate a door prize or refreshment.
Even if you didn’t put a team together come on out to network and socialize. Nonbowlers are welcome to attend for nominal fee.
Hope to see you around the Chamber and the community this summer!

JUNE 2010
A
s you know the NASA/Johnson Space
Center has a huge economic impact
in our community. Now more than ever
we are feeling the threat of what could happen to our local economy if the President’s proposed 2011 budget is approved by Congress.
For the past 19 years, the Citizens for Space
Exploration group has traveled to Washington
D.C. annually with the mission to urge Congressional support for a robust, NASA-lead human
space exploration program which is vital to our
nation’s economy, security and global leadership. Citizens for Space Exploration is locally
managed by our Bay Area Houston Economic
Partnership (BAHEP) and Chaired by Joe Mayer, senior manager of Business Development
for Lockheed Martin. Joe is also our Chamber’s
Vice Chairman of Research and our Chamber
2012 Committee Chair. The Citizens for Space
Exploration program has grown to be the nation's largest trip of its kind contacting the most
number of Congressional offices. This proNASA, pro-space exploration grassroots annual trip to Washington D.C. is comprised of a
diverse group of small and large business representatives, students and teachers, and county/
municipal officials and employees who support America's investment in NASA and human
space exploration.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this
year’s very successful trip with nearly 150
travelers from 26 states making a record
355 Congressional office visits. Also taking
part in the annual trip are over 25 undergraduate and graduate students, from
colleges and universities across the
country studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and seeking a future career in aerospace. For the
first time our Chamber’s Board of
Directors voted to sponsor one of
those university students travelling with the group. Our student
was Bruce Davis currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Colorado in Aerospace Engineering.
Bruce was fortunate to be invited
to attend the Presidential Space
Summit on this past April 15th at the Kennedy
Space Center. He is truly an impressive young
man and I hope he will have a bright future in
our country’s space program. He was an asset
on the trip and it was a pleasure to be able to
sponsor him.
If you want to learn more about the Citizens
for Space Exploration organization and what
they have accomplished over the year’s during the annual trip, visit: http://www.citizensforspaceexploration.org/dctrip.htm. I hope
you will consider joining us on the 20th Annual
Citizens for Space Exploration trip it’s a good
investment in the future of our community, our
state and our nation.
I hope you all have a great June, Happy
Father’s Day to all our amazing Dads and we
hope to see you at one of our Chamber functions this month. Remember this is YOUR organization, YOU make it happen and “We’re all
about YOU."
Warm Regards,
Cindy Harreld

MEMBER SERVICES DIVISION CHAIRMAN
ALISON SCHWAMKRUG
Chamber Intern
University of Houston - Clear Lake
The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to
honor our Member Services
Division Chairman, Gail Payne,
for 2009-2010. Payne grew up
in Syracuse, New York and
moved to Texas four years ago
with her husband who works in
scrap metal. Before moving to
Texas, Payne worked as a hospital consultant and did extensive volunteering. After Payne
and her family moved to Texas,
she was offered the marketing
director position with The Bly
Team at RE/MAX Space Center where she works today.
Once Payne started with The
Bly Team she knew it was time
to join the Chamber.
“I believe in jumping right
into the community and making new friends and seeing
what it has to offer,” Payne
said. “I especially wanted to
see what I had to offer the
community that I was making
my home.”
As the Division Chairmen of
Member Services Payne’s involvement with the chamber
starts with membership sales,
ribbon cuttings, the annual
Chairman’s Ball, luncheons,
Business After Hours and new
member relations.
“The more you put into the
community the more it gives
back,“ Payne said. “My friend
calls it ‘givers gain’.”
Future changes Payne
hopes for consist of bringing
a larger crowd to the chamber by making meetings better
known and more exciting. She
hopes the attention will entice
the community to join.
“Being apart of the member services division is exciting;
it is a great program,” Payne
said. "The Diplomats are the
face of the Chamber so I take
that very seriously.”
Payne helped with the idea
to start presenting a Diplomat
of the month to make it known
what the Chamber offers and
what each Diplomat does in
the Chamber.
“This will be a more in depth
educational process
for all the chamber
members to learn
about each other
so that we can work
together better as a
functioning unit.”
Another
idea
Payne established
is a quarterly social
which is hosted by a
different Diplomat.
“Quarterly socials
are an effort to bring attention
to the Diplomats and the Board
of Directors with what each
one is doing,” Payne said. “This
will help steer the members to
the Board of Directors for information and introduce the
Diplomats to some of the other
Division Chairmen.”
With the speed networking
and events that take place
monthly Payne feels the chamber will help any business.
“You get out of the chamber what you put in. Your life
will be enriched as well as your
business.”
In her spare time, Payne is
very active with the organiza-
tion, Sentinels of Freedom.
“This is an organization that
is giving our soldiers the gift of
time,” Payne said. “They help
the men and women with
emotional and physical challenges. It is a promised four
years of mentorship that turns
into lifelong friendships.”
Payne also loves to read,
play with her granddaughter,
cook and garden. Payne thinks
her family will stay in Texas for
good. “I love the patriotism
here. It is unlike anywhere else I
have traveled and I love being
a Texan.”
