Ruby was sleeping when her cell phone rang. It was
Brian from ApolloX Pest Control company. Jeremy Jackson
had woken up scratching. And his mother thinks it’s from
bed bugs in his room.

Bed bugs are tiny insects, the size of an apple seed,
that like to feed on people and animals. They don’t make people
sick but their bites can itch. They hide in people’s homes and can
be hard to see. Ruby went school to learn how to find them by
sniffing with her nose. Brian needed Ruby’s help to find the
bed bugs in Jeremy’s room.

Ruby got dressed and met Brian at Jeremy’s house. Together
they searched for bed bugs. They looked where bed bugs like to
hide –bed covers, mattresses, carpets, night stands, chairs, and
dressers. Ruby sniffed and sniffed and sniffed!

Suddenly, Ruby’s nose smelled something! She pointed her
nose at the end of Jeremy’s bed. Brian lifted the sheets and
there they were. A family of bed bugs was living in the seam of the
mattress. Hooray for Ruby’s nose!

Brian started treating the bed bugs. He brought his super heater
into Jeremy’s room and sealed the windows and doors. He turned
on the heater and left the room. When the temperature reached up
to 149 degrees the bed bugs, their larvae and their eggs died. Brian
rarely uses chemicals to treat bed bugs.

Brian told Jeremy & his Mom that bed bugs can
enter a home in backpacks and luggage. Or they can
even crawl from one apartment to the next. Jeremy and
his Mom thanked Brian and said good bye.

Travel Tips to Prevent Bringing Bed Bugs Home
1. Bring a flashlight to check for bed bugs in your hotel
room, especially in the bed.
2. Cover Suitcases with plastic and keep them off the floor.
Put them in a dry bath tub.
3. When you return from a trip put all of your clothes in the
dryer, as hot as the clothes will allow, for 45 minutes.

Sometimes you can see the bed bugs in your bed.
