Congratulations, and well
done to the Mahee Mixed
Team in qualifying for the
Irish Mixed Foursomes!
On Sunday 16th May, team
captains John and June
White took the mixed team
to Ardglass and successfully
obtained that vital top four
slot to gain qualification.
Mahee had a splendid 289
total to finish third behind
host club Ardglass and second place Downpatrick.
Scrabo managed to grab the
fourth spot .The pairings of
Kerry McCloy & Colin McKeown, Mervyn Marshall &
Heather Gibson, Darryl
Moore & Hilary McHenry and
Jack Bennet & Pauline
Maguire all returned cards in
the low seventies leaving the
Mitchell pairing relieved that
their card was “surplus to
requirements”!
The gallery at the 18th green
was filled with Mahee supporters and the team would
like to thank all those who
travelled to cheer them
home. Special thanks go to
the Lady and Gents Captains, the Lady and Gents
Presidents, Gents Immediate

Following a lovely meal in the
clubhouse everyone waited
with baited breath to see if
qualification was an option.
Mahee now go into a knockout format and play Downpatrick at the Ardglass venue
on Friday 4th June. Good
luck to all concerned!

It was lovely to meet one of
Mahee’s past Lady Captains
who popped in for a short
visit to the course. Mrs W G
Shankley was Lady Captain
in 1954 and was visiting with
her son and his wife. As a
sharp witted 90 year old she
recalled some of her experi-
ences and spoke about old
friends. Mahee on the 17th
May was looking in very good
condition and we hope Mrs
Shankley enjoyed her short
trip down memory lane.

Mixed Fortunes at Ardglass
On a perfect Summer evening,
the Mahee Mixed Team travelled back to Ardglass to play
Downpatrick in the knockout
section of the Irish Mixed Foursomes. Unavailablity due to
holidays, saw the Mahee team
format change slightly, but
substitutes John White and
Marge Campbell were more
than adequate replacements.
Mahee got off to nervous start,
but most pairings soon rallied
and put up a good fight against a
young, talented Downpatrick
team. Jack Bennett & Pauline
Maguire were the sole winners
for Mahee, with Jack being in
magnificent putting form on the
greens! John White & Christine
Mitchell pulled back from 4
down only to be beaten on the
18th green, and in a similar
match Robin Mitchell & Kerry
McCloy came back from 4
down but were called in at the
17th after going all square as a
result had already been obtained.
Everyone agreed that all the
matches were played in a very
friendly spirit and in his tribute
to the winners, John White
wished Downpatrick the very
best of luck in the next round.
It was great to see all the spectators from Mahee and although
the team failed in their mission
to continue we hope we didn’t
disappoint those who travelled
to cheer us on. Thanks to John
& June White who were excellent Captains and gave positive
encouragement when needed!
It was good to see both the Ladies and Gents Captains there in
support even though Lady Captain Anita was doing her baby
sitting role as well!

Recent Team News
The Miele Foursomes came to
a halt on Tuesday 8th June when
they gallantly lost out to a
strong Rockmount team. The
girls had a good run in the competition, overcoming Scrabo
with a 3-1 victory.

The Friendly League Team
recently visited Holywood and
managed a 3-2 win after 5 close
matches. All in all it was a great
day out with excellent hospitality afterwards

Recently spotted out on the
course was Avril Russell.
Great to see her back and
playing as well as ever!
The Business Women’s League Team
played Scrabo away and finished with a
fine draw. Winners were Pauline Maquire & Yvonne Revill with Hilary
McHenry getting a half.
Lady Captain’s Charity
This year, the Lady Captain would like all proceeds of her
day to go to The Marie Curie Cancer Care. As we are all
aware this is a truly worthy charity, giving much needed
help to cancer sufferers and their families. This collection
will be dedicated to great friend and Mahee member Liz
Caruth, who passed away in 2004 after battling the disease
for a short time. Liz loved playing at Mahee and was very
good company, both on and off the course. Hopefully we
will be able to present a worthy cheque to Marie Curie
Care and also realise how lucky it is to be walking around
our beautiful course no matter what the golf is like!
Queen of the fairway this
month was Marge Campbell. Marge shot a magnificent 65 on 7th June. This
lets her qualify for the
Peggy Nelson at Dunmurry
on 26th July. Well done
Marge!
