Tall Pines Apiaries
Honey is amazing! It has been used
for centuries as a sweetener, skin care,
and for medicinal purposes. There are
no added preservatives, no added flavorings, no added coloring and stored in an
air tight containers doesn’t spoil. One
of the best ways to obtain pure honey
is from a local apiary (bee farm). In my
quest for this precious liquid I stumbled
upon apiarist, Peter Roberts, at the Vero
Beach Farmer’s Market. Peter has been
an apiarist for over twenty years; he owns
and farms Tall Pines Apiaries which has
about 200 hives.
Peter tells me honey is mostly from
the nectar (blossoms) of plants and not
from pollen. A honey bee can visit between 50 – 100 flowers during one collection trip and may make a stunning
1,600 round trips of nectar collecting to
produce just 1 ounce of honey. The bees
gather the nectar in their mouths where
it mixes with enzymes in their saliva and
carried in their “honey stomach” to the
hives; where they deposit it into the cells
of the hive’s walls. The necessary removal of moisture is done by the fluttering
of their wings Once the water content
is reduced the bees seal the honey in the
cell with a layer of wax and it is ready to
be harvested for human use.
The taste, color, and consistency of
honey are reflective of seasonal blooms
and weather and Indian River counties’
citrus groves are certainly a favorite for
honey bees as well as other plants and
trees. Tall Pines Apiaries offers the following varieties:
•Orange Blossom: a February- March
honey from orange blossoms or a combination of citrus floral sources from
oranges and nearby grapefruit or even
lime and lemon trees. Usually light in
color and mild in flavor with a fresh
scent and light citrus taste.
• Palmetto: a March and April honey from the palmetto saw. It is amber
in color, full bodied, creamy and has
smoky and woody overtones.
• Wild Blossom: a May- July honey
from a variety of wildflowers and plants
blooming during the summer. It’s a
thicker honey, deep amber, and the
taste varies from year to year based on
what bloomed.
• Brazilian Pepper: a September and
October honey from the Brazilian Pepper tree blossoms and has sweet peppery
overtones.
Visit Peter at the Vero Beach Farmer’s
Market on Saturdays to sample and purchase Tall Pines Apiaries’ honey and
honey products. Tall Pines Apiaries also
sells honey combs, bees wax candles, lip
balm, and bees wax. If you are used to
the less expensive mass produced honey
which often has corn syrup added in,
you will notice a significant difference
in quality and taste. Complete Medical Equipment, Scooters, Beds,
Wheelchairs, Lift Chairs, Bathroom Safety Equipment,
Diabetic, Orthopedic & Ostomy products and more!

VOLUME 118 • COMPLIMENTARY
EDITOR’s NOTE
Cindy Bryant
This is the 118th edition of Heartbeat. Wow! I reflected
on this for a while and found one word that exemplifies the
people and organizations that you read about in each edition
of the Heartbeat; and that word is “wholehearted.” They are
completely committed to what they do. They want to do and
share with others in hope of improving another person’s
quality of life.
Wholeheartedness has unique qualities and one that stands
out in my mind is constant perseverance to be better in order to
serve or provide for others. Often times, there is no way to
predict when or how one has made
a difference. The same quality exists between volunteers and those
being paid.
Our county is rich in resources
and I wish I could recognize
everyone at one time. But for now,
I remain committed to bringing
readers, listeners, and customers
the best resources available, one
edition at a time.

The Place at Vero Beach, an assisted
living community, is a local and knowledgeable resource for you or a loved
one who can no longer safely remain at
home. When I visited The Place recently
they shared the two most frequent questions regarding financial assistance for
assisted living. Leaving one’s home is
difficult emotionally and many people
do not know two significant benefits
that can help financially. Below are the
questions and the answers.
Are there Veterans’ Benefits to
help me pay for Assisted Living for my
Spouse or Myself?
There are benefits to help with the cost of assisted living under the “Improved Pension Plan
with Aide and Attendance” to qualifying veterans who have met requirements such as at least
90 days active duty service, one day of wartime
duty, be of 65 years of age or disabled and a discharge other than dishonorable. If you meet the
financial requirements and need assistance with
activities of daily living you and your spouse will
likely qualify. Benefits up to $2,054.00 per
month are available to help you obtain quality
care for assisted care needs.
Can Medicaid Assist Me with
Assisted Living?
The Medicaid Long-term Care Community
Division Program is sponsored by the Florida
Department of Elder Affairs. Their goal is to
keep you living in your community with needed
assistance instead going into a nursing home.
Assisted Living Facilities are an excellent option when living in your home is too difficult
for you or a loved one. You may qualify if you
are 65 years of age or older, have Medicare
parts A and B and be Medicaid eligible, and
determined eligible after a comprehensive assessment review and evaluation.
The Place at Vero Beach is located at 3855 Indian River Boulevard
in Vero in a lovely community setting with many amenities.
Call 772-770-3796 if you would like a tour or an
appointment to learn more about The Place and their benefits.

Sebastian River Medical Center
Achieves the Bariatric Surgery
Center of Excellence Designation
Weight loss can do more than improve your quality of life; it
can also prevent or lower the risk of life-threatening conditions
like diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. And when
traditional weight loss methods fail, some people opt for surgical
weight loss procedures like Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve
gastrectomy and gastric banding.
Since 2009, Patrick Domkowski, MD,
medical director of Sebastian River
Medical Center’s Surgical Weight Loss
program, and Jason Radecke, MD,
attending bariatric surgeon, have been
transforming people’s lives through
bariatric surgery. They have helped
hundreds of patients achieve healthy,
long-term weight loss, and now they can
help even more people.
That’s because Sebastian River Medical
Center recently achieved the Center of
Excellence designation and can now provide bariatric surgical care for recipients of
Medicare and select Medicaid plans.
“This designation signifies that our
program provides the highest quality
of care and compassion for patients,”
said Dr. Domkowski. “This is reflected
through extensive bariatric surgery
experience, staff members’ continuing education, state-of-the-art medical
equipment and dedication to each
patient and their health.”
Awarded by the American Society for
Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS)
and the American College of Surgeons
(ACS), the Center for Excellence
recognition is only given to facilities
that demonstrate an unparalleled
commitment and ability to consistently
deliver safe, evidence-based care. To earn
the designation, Sebastian River
Medical Center provided information
on all aspects of our bariatric surgery
program and processes, including data
on surgical outcomes.
“Earning the Center of Excellence
designation signifies our ability to consistently deliver the safest, highest-quality care to bariatric surgery patients,”
said Dr. Domkowski. “The program
fosters quality improvement in bariatric
surgery, and participation has focused
our team on exceeding clinical benchmarks and guidelines. But most importantly, our commitment to excellence
improves the health and well-being of
our patients.”
According to Sebastian River Medical
Center COO Kelly Enriquez, the Center“
of Excellence designation reflects the
dedication of the entire surgical weight
loss team. “What a great validation to
the hard work, team efforts and processes in place that are moving us toward
even better patient care,” she said. “Dr.
Domkowski and Dr. Radecke are amazing
surgeons that have elevated our program
to the next level.”
The comprehensive program includes
nutritional counseling and emotional
support, helping participants achieve
lasting weight loss success. Assisting Dr.
Domkowski and Dr. Radecke in patient
care is Barbara Allen, a nurse practitioner that has specialized in bariatric
medicine for several years. Rounding out
the program is Cindy Rider, bariatric
coordinator, providing education and
clinical support for patients throughout
their weight loss journey.

Program and find out if you’re a candidate for bariatric surgery,

“Now It’s Personal Training”
with John Bennett
John Bennett, once athletic and fit,
found himself looking in the mirror
and not recognizing the overweight person in baggy clothing hiding 60 pounds
staring back at him. John tried the “dieting” and unguided trips to the gym
with not much success; committed to
becoming healthier, John hired a fitness trainer. Nine months later, he lost
the 60 pounds, turned unhealthy body
fat to healthy lean muscle, and beat the
odds by maintaining his weight loss and
healthy habits. John then transformed a
personal victory into one for other people to reach their personal goals.
John changed his career, embarked
on new educational achievements, and
opened Now It’s Personal Training,
a Licensed State of Florida Health
Studio. He is an ISSA (International
Sports Science Association) Certified
Fitness Trainer and an ISSA Senior
Fitness Specialist. He says, “Training
someone who is older is different than
training someone younger. Leading a
sedentary lifestyle when we are older
is not good for your health. Experts in
aging tell us that once we reach the age
of 50 the need for fitness is crucial due
to the many physiological changes that
occur with age. For example, strength
training is a key component in preventing Alzheimer’s disease.”
Now It’s Personal Training educates
and trains clients in the performance of
safe and appropriate exercises to effectively guide them to optimal health. The
company is focused on Health & Physical
Fitness and offers free seminars to the
public for educational and motivational
purposes to help promote a healthier
community for all its residents. John
Bennett also offers personal training in
client’s homes, residential & community gyms or at the Vero Beach Athletic
Club. He works with many of his client’s
physicians and ensures medical clearance is obtained when needed. John teaches proper form and technique to prevent injury, uses different
workouts based upon goals, and he is
able to assess client’s weakness and goals
to make changes when needed. Fitness

True Colors Salon and Spa
How does a friendly environment
lead to better results? Simple, says
Courtney Turner, Owner of True Colors,
“When you know your service provider won’t be offended, you can ask for
what you want.”
True Colors offers a wide array of
services from hair and nails to massage
and skin care, all in a luxurious and
spacious setting. Complimentary wine,
beverages and snacks await you in the
lounge, but its the attitude at True
Colors that sets it apart. “I’ve seen some very nice places, and
I know there are a lot of very talented
people out there, but the salon and spas
that I liked enough to return to were
the ones that made me feel really comfortable. When I felt like I was among
friends, I could say ‘oh, I wear it this
way,’ or ‘hey, that’s too light,’ and that’s
when I would get exactly what I wanted,”
says Courtney. “Think of me as a client advocate. I’ve
been a client much more than I’ve been
an owner, and I try to approach my job
from the client’s perspective. At True
Colors, we reach out to you and try to
create a relationship where you feel comfortable telling us anything, even what
you don’t like, so that you get precisely what you want. When I recruit our
talent, I make sure they are like us: people
who love people.”

Owner Bay Street Pharmacy & Home Health Care
Change is coming! Medicare Part D and
Affordable Care Act overview for 2014
I am sure you are hearing a LOT in the news about the new, upcoming healthcare plans starting in January 2014 created by the Affordable
Care Act, also referred to as “Obamacare.” And, if you are a Medicare
beneficiary, you may have even wondered if those new health plans will
affect you. The answer is NO!
This new law was designed to provide access
for all Americans to affordable health care,
but not those who currently have coverage
through programs such as Medicare.
Medicare Part D is an “opt-in” prescription
drug plan offered by Medicare that started
in 2006. Congress took a big step in offering
this program by creating a competitive privatized market for prescription drug plans. The
Affordable Care Act did make some positive
changes to Medicare Part D in 2011, resulting
in decreased out of pocket costs during the
coverage gap period. In fact, for 2014 the discounts during this “donut hole” period are
52.5% for brand name and 28% for generic.
It is VERY important that anyone with a Medicare Part D plan review their plan
EVERY year. Although it is not anticipated that plan premiums will increase much
this year, it is very possible that a medication covered this year will be excluded from
coverage next year under the same plan! The enrollment period for the 2014 plan
year will be October 15 thru December 7! If you want to review your plan choices
or change plans you must do so by December 7 or you will not be able to change
again until next year (except under special circumstances).
So, how do you review your plan? There are a few options, but one of the easiest
is to visit the www.medicare.gov website. There is an option on the home page to
“compare prescription drug plans for 2014”. Follow the prompts, enter all of your
current medications, select your preferred pharmacy and the website will choose
plans based on the lowest overall cost for the year. It will also calculate what your
copays will be for each medication and predict if you will hit the coverage gap. If
you find a plan you like, you can enroll directly and your coverage will switch at the
beginning of the year. Other websites that offer a similar plan finder service are:
www.q1medicare.com or www.partdplanfinder.com.
If you prefer personalized service choosing a prescription plan, you have a few options as well. The State of Florida has an information line, 211, and calling that

Jeff grins as he reaches for his cell phone.
“Mom’s having a great day today,” he muses.
“Jeff,” his mom says, “you won’t believe what
I just received in the mail today. I’ve been
laughing and crying; it’s so unbelievable.”
Jeff moved his mom north to an assisted living facility, 5 minutes from his home. She’s
adjusted well. Jeff’s family visits her often and
love having her close.
Jeff and his wife return to Florida to clear
out everything in mom’s 3,000 sq foot house. A gazillion decisions….the stress is
exhausting. After 10 hours sifting through a lifetime of memories and STUFF, the
project feels overwhelming. Mom’s house must go on the market…NOW!
They need help! Their realtor brings me in to assess.
Honored to alleviate their burden, I present my “One Question Solution.” Jeff
and his wife gratefully take advantage of my help. They quickly go through the house,
choose ONLY what they want, knowing ALL the rest is being professionally cared for.
As I clean out the last item in the massive walk in closet, I notice a beautiful blue
antique hat box on the top shelf. I gently pull it down as it practically crumbles in
my hands from age.
Expecting a hat or scarves in the box, I’m in awe by what I discover. The box
brims with old love letters from Jeff’s dad to his mom. The tiny envelopes, still lovingly wrapped with blue silk ribbons, just seem to burst with tenderness.
Touching this box of memories sends waves of emotion through me. “No way,” I
whisper, “can I dispose of these ‘keepsakes.’
Explaining to Jeff what I find, he gives me his mom’s new address, and I ship the
entire box off to her.
Days later, I close my eyes, picture her face, imagining every emotion she’d feel
receiving these long-forgotten treasures. Jeff’s phone call takes me out of my reverie
and he says “Debbie, anyone else would have tossed that box in the trash. You recognized its value and cared enough to go the extra mile. Mom’s phone call is etched
in my heart forever. Thank you dearly!”

SRMC’s New Transitional Care
Unit helps patients return home
More than 30 years ago, Robert Moon
suffered a leg injury as the result of a skiing accident. After enduring years of
chronic pain, he decided it was time for
knee replacement surgery.
“I’m extremely lucky that the doctors
saved my leg after the accident,” Robert
said. “But I suffered long-term damage
and really needed a new knee. When
I finally decided to have the procedure
done, I chose Sebastian River Medical
Center.”
After SRMC orthopedic surgeon
Omar Hussamy, MD, performed Robert’s surgery, he recommended a stay in
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy is designed to help
people modify or adapt their skills in order
to perform key daily living activities such as
dressing and bathing.

relieve pain, restore physical function and
improve fitness levels.

the hospital’s brand new Transitional
Care Unit (TCU). Designed for patients
who are recovering from a surgical procedure or illness and cannot yet return
home, Sebastian River Medical Center’s
TCU provides daily skilled care to help
patients like Robert gain the strength
and skills they need to get back to their
daily lives.
Located on Sebastian River Medical
Center’s main campus, the TCU is the
first skilled nursing facility in Sebastian.
Patients no longer have to travel to Vero
Beach or Brevard County to receive
transitional care services. That means
they may continue to see their own doctors and avoid any disruption in continuity of care.
The staff of nurses, certified nursing
assistants and skilled therapists provide
a variety of transitional care services and
treatment for many diagnoses, including:
• Orthopedic surgeries and injuries
• Neurological balance problems
• Stroke rehabilitation
• Arthritis management
• Memory training
• Aphasia/speech disorders
• Post surgical or medical hospitalization
resulting in functional decline
“I was extremely impressed with the
nurses and therapists in the TCU,” Robert
said. “The staff just couldn’t do enough
for me while I was there; they handled my
case with care and professionalism.”
The facility focuses on two main categories of transitional care: sub-acute
care and short-term care. Sub-acute care
is comprehensive inpatient care designed
for someone who has an acute illness, injury
Bernadette Haugh, Director of Rehabilitative Services at Sebastian River Medical Center
and Mr. Robert Moon
or exacerbation of a disease process and
requires around-the clock medical care.
Short-term care provides intensive therapies on an inpatient basis for those who
no longer require acute care but cannot
yet return home.
Skilled staff members treat patients
through the use of occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy.
“They did a few interesting things for
me while I was in the TCU,” Robert
said. “For example, one of my therapists
set me up on Wii bowling in order to
work on my balance. It was great!”
Robert says he would recommend
SRMC’s TCU to anyone, anytime.
“I can’t think of one thing that would
have made my experience in the
TCU any better – I really can’t.”
– Robert Moon, SRMC TCU patient
“I live in Ft. Pierce and passed by a couple
of hospitals on my way to Sebastian. I’m
so glad I chose SRMC for my surgery
and recovery.”

The Florida
Equestrian

Horse farms and stables are bountiful in Indian River
County and I found a special stable, Scarlett Stables, in
Fellsmere where horses help people heal. Scarlett Stables
is the home for The Florida Equestrian Foundation where
horses are part of the psychotherapy and life enrichment
team. The horses, through therapeutic interactions,
improve the lives of children with autism, veterans with
post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries,
and people with depression.
Horses, being prey animals, are alert and sensitive to
their surroundings. Their ability to detect threats and
danger in order to flee for safety is the basis on how horses
detect emotional distress, behaviors, and patterns in
humans; who are
predatory and
emotional beings.
Horses over time
and trust are able
to partner with us
to form relationships.
Cindy Devine,
one of the founders,
explained to me
that horses mirror the feelings of people they are working with. She said “a person with anxiety standing next
to a horse will see the horse mirroring that anxiety. The
mental job of the client is to work through the anxiety,
which will in turn work through the horse’s anxiety, and
both achieve success. The time spent paying attention
to the triggers and working through them becomes a
routine in every situation in life. The same works with
fears, bullying, addictions, abuse, and family and couples
counseling. The visible feedback is immediate; unlike
any other form of counseling.”

Helping “At Risk”
Children Heal
Carefree Ranch in
Vero Beach has a lot
to offer children with
their camp program
and horseback riding
lessons; but they also
fill a need for children
in need of healing.
Horses have a skill and
intuition that many
adults don’t have and
that is the ability to be
non-judgmental and
to wait patiently for
a response. Carefree
Ranch works with kids
as horse and child
embark on a healing
and therapeutic journey. Horses can help
children learn about
themselves, other
people and interacting
with the world.
Owners, Hedi Headley and Helen McKnight created a safe
haven for children who
have suffered abuse or
have other emotional
concerns. They believe
“horses, and working
with these giant gentle
beasts, can enhance
children’s lives in ways
we are just beginning
to comprehend.” Hedi

Patty Selent is on a mission!
I met Patty Selent and her husband,
Rick, who like many of us are busy with
our families, careers, and life’s unexpected
events. On February 14th, 2013 Patty was
told she had breast cancer and was given
three treatment options. Patty, a full-time
employee for the city of Vero Beach and
the owner of “X-Selent Bargains” thrift
store and Rick, a fire fighter for Martin
County, needed time to digest this news.
They decided on option three, a bilateral
mastectomy. Patty and Rick did not expect what was about to happen next.
Patty, while talking to her nurse in the
hospital discovered an overwhelming
need to help others for early breast cancer
detection. Patty was quick to tell me she
had great support from her husband, her
family, her employer, and good insurance.
But not everyone has the opportunity of
early detection. While still recuperating,
facing a few unexpected hurdles, and not
sure of available resources, Patty focused
on a mission with the help of her physician, Dr. Alan Durkin, to spread the
importance of early detection of breast
cancer. Patty and Rick embarked on a
fund-raising mission beginning with a
fundraiser Sat. 29th, 2013 at the Heritage
Park Pavilion at Point West, donating a
percentage of her thrift store profits, and
engaging local restaurants such as Bill
Evans. “We Care to Wear Pink”, a local
organization that provides free vouchers
for mammograms ( X-ray of the breast) for
Indian River County residents offered to
help Patty. We don’t currently have a mobile screening van in the county so this is
a big step for early detection resources especially for residents who do not have the
money for a mammogram.
Patty focused on a mission
with the help of her physician,
Dr. Alan Durkin, to spread
the importance of early
detection of breast cancer.
Early detection often means a diagnosis before symptoms occur. Breast
cancers found early are more likely to
be smaller, confined to the breast, and
have a better prognosis. Each year, approximately 230,000 women (about 1
in 8) in the U.S. and about 2,200 men
are diagnosed with breast cancer. See
your doctor annually, do breast self-exams monthly, and have a mammogram
when your doctor recommends it.
Local efforts such as Patty’s benefits
and strengthens our community and improves access to care. Visit and support
Patty’s early breast cancer detection efforts at “X-Selent Bargains” thrift store at
155 43rd Avenue.

Weight Loss Surgery –
A Life Changing Procedure
Sebastian River Medical Center, in partnership with Riverside Surgical and Weight
Loss Center, is giving away two free laparoscopic sleeve surgeries. After submitting detailed applications earlier this year, five people were chosen to compete for the public’s
votes on Riverside Surgical’s facebook page. The public really showed their support for
all the contestants but the two that received the most votes will now have their surgeries
performed for free. The lucky winners from the contest are highlighted below and will write
about their journey and record videos to show their progress. You can follow their stories
at www.srmcsurgicalweightloss.com.
Anna Vasquez
My name is Anna and I was chosen as
a winner of the “Why Weight” contest!
I am so happy and
excited to be starting
my weight loss journey.
I have tried just
about every diet
out there with some
success, but the
weight always comes
back once I hit a
plateau. This surgery
will help me not hit Anna Vasquez
that plateau and lose
the weight I need to
be healthy and keep it
off. I have done my research and know what
it takes to make the
surgery successful and
I am ready and willing
to make the commitment.
I really want to get
back into athletics. At Rachael Blizzard
this weight I have a
hard time getting back in shape and the
gym is a tough place to go when you feel in-
secure. My goal is not only for myself but
to pay this forward. I want to get fit and
coach girls’ softball. I would also like to
find a way to get overweight
children involved with the
softball team and get them
in shape.
On a more personal
note, I am happily married
to my high school sweetheart Eric. Our family is
completed by a black 7lb.
toy poodle named Ozzy
and a 9lb Maltese named
Mercy that we adopted. I
look forward to sharing my
future success with you!
It was an engaging two weeks of voting
but the outcome has proven to me that
there are people in every corner willing
to support me through this journey! My
thanks go to my many friends and family members who voted for me. They truly
have helped make this new life possible.
I am humbled by the amount of support
they have provided and I am so thankful
to Riverside Surgical and Sebastian River
Medical Center for providing such an opportunity for members of the community.
Since winning, I have imagined my
life in a way that has not been possible in
years. The thought of taking pressure off
my back and knees has had me bursting
with joy! I can finally see myself dancing
and singing alongside my elementary
students, participating in marathons,
ballroom dancing with my friends, and
having a higher sense of self-worth and
self-esteem.
I am ready to begin this new life that
Riverside Surgical and Weight Loss Center has graciously given me. And again,
a major thank you goes to every person
who has and will continue to support
and encourage me through this wonderful journey. Thank you and God Bless.

has a New Center!
Diabetes & Health Education, Inc.
is a local not-for-profit organization
devoted to helping people with diabetes
and related conditions manage their
illness for better health and reduce
and or prevent complications. Up to
now, they have been supported by the
founder and committed board and advisory members. Dr. F. Khawaja, a local
physician, has made it possible for them
to actually have a center with enough
room for a classroom. Diabetes & Health
Education, Inc are now located at Bay
Street and U.S. Highway 1 in unit 8; in
the same plaza where Bay Street Pharmacy
and Dr. Khawaja’s office are located. Bay
Street Pharmacy shares the classroom for
their diabetes and health classes which
helps to reduce overhead.
Colleen Sanders-Symanski, RN,
administrator for Diabetes & Health Education explains, “people need to have
accurate information and resources. The
web is full of incorrect and confusing
information, there is always someone
selling a “magic” supplement or diet
program. In addition, there are a lot of
food-like products and misleading labels
on food packaging.” Their new center
will fill a need to educate people.
Diabetes is a life-long disease that also
affects cardiovascular and kidney health.
Preventing and reducing risks of stroke,
hypertension, obesity, kidney disease,
and peripheral neuropathy will improve
one’s quality of life and financial security.

applying for 501c3 status and national
accreditation by the American Association
of Diabetes Educators. They depend

contributors who made possible their
accreditation application fees and help
fund classes. Volunteer opportunities
are also available.
Please stop by and see them in their new

VNA Names Foreman, Perkins,
and Sanchez as the Associates of the Quarter
The VNA is pleased to announced that Kristen Foreman, Jessica Perkins, and Adriana
Sanchez have been named VNA’s associates of the quarter. Foreman, Perkins, and Sanchez
were selected by their peers for their accountability, integrity, excellent customer service,
and for providing excellent patient care for the VNA.
“Kristen, Jessica, and Adriana’s passion and commitment to their patients comes
through by the accomplishments from their jobs. Recently, while working as a team, Kristen, Jessica, and Adriana helped a quadriplegic patient achieve some independence. They
worked with this patient, who is now able to bring her hand to her mouth as well as have
some feeling sensations in her extremities. I praise this team for their hard work and dedication,” commends Rosalie Webster, VNA’s Vice President of Human Resources.
Kristen Foreman is a Physical Therapist Assistant. Her duties include working with a team
and supporting the physical therapist in the treatment of a patient. Foreman has over ten
years of physical therapy experience, and has been an associate with the VNA since 2004.
Jessica Perkins is a Registered Nurse and has been with the VNA since 2009. Prior to
joining the VNA, Perkins was a private caregiver and was responsible for assisting in the
care of a legally blind patient with early dementia. Although she was a true asset to this
patient, Perkins has an extensive background in oncology, which is where she dedicated
most of her career before her time at the VNA.
Adriana Sanchez is a physical therapist with the VNA. Prior to joining the VNA,
Sanchez worked as a Rehab Director and a Physical Therapy Traveler for various healthcare
facilities in Virginia and Florida. Sanchez has been employed with the VNA for two years,
and brings her expertise of physical therapy with her. She has her doctorate degree and is
currently becoming certified in Oncology Rehab.
