PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Andrew Falk
With 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade (Metro Cup) and the Green Shield team all
making the Finals Series in their respective competitions and with 3rd and 5th Grade taking
out premierships, one might suggest that we had just completed a brilliant season.
However, it is my firm opinion that, following several successful “lead-up” seasons, we
actually should be doing better than we are. We should be threatening the Club
Championship; we should be a top-four club in 1st Grade and, with the amount of work
done by our Academy, we should consistently have one of the best Poidevin-Gray teams
in the competition. Perhaps I am a hard-marker!
This is not to say that we aren’t doing many things “right”. We are clearly very strong in
the lower Grades as evidenced by the fact that we are regularly represented with teams in
finals series matches and we have had our name engraved on several lower grade trophies
in recent seasons. We have also played in Green Shield quarter and semi-finals matches in
a majority of the past eight or nine seasons.
However, we are just not quite good enough or consistent enough for the “big” prizes.
There is no doubt that one of the things we do better than any other Sydney Grade club is
provide the highest quality of coaching to our players. Much of this is done through the
Gordon Cricket Academy which is now more than twelve years old and the recent
addition of two new age groups (Under 19 for players between Green Shield age and
school-leaving age and the Junior Development Squad for 12-13-14 year olds prior to
introduction into Green Shield) has significantly strengthened our ability to identify young
players and assist in their development towards grade cricket.
There are a couple of “excuses” for our higher grade performances. Of the 2nd Grade team
that was beaten in the Grand Final two years ago and which made the semi’s last year,
seven regular players were unavailable this season. Despite the fact that 2nd Grade “won”
the wooden spoon this year, it was not the worst 2nd Grade team in the competition but the
paucity of points scored by this grade was directly reflected in a drop in final Club
Championship positions from 5th to 8th.
First Grade “blew it” after the end of January. They lost matches to North Sydney,
Sutherland and UNSW that they could/should have won. The opposite result in any one of
these would have seen the team in the finals series and, although they would probably
have struggled against the always-strong St George team, who knows what might have
happened at the “business-end” of the season.
Away from the doom and gloom from the top grades and there were two wonderful
performances in the lower grades.
Any 3rd Grade team that can boast amongst its ranks the experience of Ed Howitt, Mark
Atkinson, Adair Durie and Damon Livermore should be 10-to-1 on to take home the endof season silverware. However, it was a pleasure to watch several of the younger players
make match-winning contributions to victories in the Preliminary and Semi Final matches
at Chatswood Oval. In fact, without these efforts, the campaign would have faltered. Then
11
Adair bowled unchanged throughout the Sydney University innings for a Player-of-theFinal performance, bowling 35 overs and taking 8 wickets for 56.
Following a consistent season, 5th Grade won the opportunity to contest back-to-back
premierships. In the Final, they faced the Minor Premiers St George, a very strong unit
which had lost only one match prior to arriving at Pratten Park. Gordon was sent in to bat
on a wicket that had spent a fair time under covers during the preceding wet week and
they were only able to post a modest 139. St George in reply was creeping towards an
inevitable victory and at 3 for 108 all appeared lost. Enter Matt Selby who, with a
devastating spell of medium pace, assisted by excellent catching by his teammates, and St
George was dismissed for 121.
And suddenly Gordon had won two Grade premierships in a season for the first time since
the early 90’s.
In my reports for the last two years, I have mentioned that Gordon is incapable of playing
T20 cricket with any semblance of ability and that we lacked the services of a consistent
1st Grade spin bowler. Same again this year! Enough said!
Off the field, two of the outstanding contributors were, as usual, Paul Stephenson and Jim
Cattlin. The Club would struggle should either of these gentlemen decide to prematurely
hang up his boots. This is, of course, not to say that they were the only people who did
anything. So many other people volunteer large portions of their lives to this club and
each one makes a significant contribution to our being in a position as the envy of many
other clubs. Paul and Jim have been nominated as Life Members of the Club for their
sustained service.
For the third year, the major fund-raising function was the Annual Golf Day and Dinner,
held at the Killara Golf Club. Paul Stephenson and his committee again did a magnificent
job in organising this event and an increased profit from the day was achieved. This year,
the selected charity was the Movement Disorder Foundation and funds we contributed are
to be directed towards the MDF’s introduction of their Dream Cricket program into
Sydney’s north. (Dream Cricket is a joint project between Rotary, the Bradman
Foundation and the MDF whereby disabled children in years 3 to 6 are given an
opportunity to experience cricket, albeit in modified formats. Anyone interested in further
information should visit www.dreamcricket.com.au)
Harry Turner was thrown in at the deep end as Treasurer when Ian Packman handed him a
box of documents at the end of October. Harry did a terrific job (returning a modest profit
in a year when our costs continued to rapidly escalate) and we hope he stays on for several
more years. I apologise, Harry, that I was not able to provide greater help this year.
Hopefully, we will have a real Financial Controller next season that can provide the
proper assistance.
Above, I attempted to acknowledge in general terms the contributions made by our group
of volunteers. To mention a few, and at great risk of forgetting someone, the likes of
Tony Wilson, Geoff Hickman, Mark Carmichael, Michael Falk, Marshall Rosen, Dave
Millar, Matt Kelly, Ed Howitt Snr, Mike Beverley, Peter Horwitz , Sam Buono and Dick
Huey, continue to give of their time year after year, while some of the “newbies”
including Peter Klemt, Tim Cubbage, Mark Newman, Rob Carruthers and Derek Borg
will hopefully get more involved in the Club over coming years. Thank you all.
12
Also I need to acknowledge the great jobs done by Mark Ham and his helpers for
Gordon’s in2Cricket program (for 5 to 8) year olds over the past three seasons and Steve
Bibb and his committee who continue to improve the strength and reputation of our Junior
Club. Both of these groups are vital to the ongoing development of junior cricketers in our
region.
For the past three seasons, the Club has been generously sponsored by the Orchard Tavern
near Chatswood station. Several functions were held at this venue during the recent season
(including a highly successful inaugural Presentation Night) and the hotel’s generosity in
providing us with meeting rooms, function areas, and a pleasant environment for aftermatch activities has been greatly appreciated. Just prior to the publication of this report,
the Club had discussions with the new managers of the hotel and they expressed a desire
to expand their sponsorship. We look forward to developing this relationship.
In addition to “The Orchard”, we are extremely appreciative of the generosity of all those
individuals and organisations who contributed during the past season especially
Mortgageport, Peter Horwitz and the Horwitz Group, Riboni Constructions, Hickman &
Ritchard Financial Planning, Cricket NSW, Cricket Australia and, of course, our “major”
sponsors, Willoughby and Ku-ring-gai Councils.
13
REPORT OF THE GENERAL COMMITTEE AND
HONORARY TREASURER'S STATEMENT
Jim Cattlin, Hon. Secretary
The General Committee has much pleasure in submitting for the members' consideration
and adoption, the One Hundred and Eighth Annual Report and Balance Sheet. As in
previous years, this report is in the format that various sub-committees report to the
General Committee.
ADMINISTRATION
Finance
Ian Packman, after several attempts, finally relinquished the role as the Club’s Honorary
Treasurer in October and many thanks go to both he and his wife Gilly for their diligent
work and reporting over the past seven seasons. Harry Turner stepped into the position
and we wish him well for the future.
A third very successful Golf Day and Dinner was held in February and funds from this
event greatly assisted our ability to show a small profit at the end of the year.
SCA and NSWCA
Marshall Rosen and Andrew Falk have been the Club’s delegates to the Sydney Cricket
Association for the past thirteen years. Marshall is also a Director of the NSW Cricket
Association but resigned as a State Selector prior to the season after ten years. In March
Andrew was elected Chairman of SCA, an honour for him and the Club.
Jessica Henry, the long-serving President of the GDCC Women’s Division, was again on
the Committee of CNSW, Chairperson of the SCA’s Women’s Sub Committee and
Manager of NSW U18 team.
Women’s Division
Congratulations to the whole club for coming 5th in Club Championship and 3rd Grade
being Runners up. In particular we congratulate Lisa Sthalekar for her brilliant
contribution to Australia winning the ODI World Cup. We wish her well in retirement.
Juniors
The Junior Club fielded 18 teams this past season, four more than the previous season.
Our thanks go to Steve Bibb, Convenor, the Junior Committee and all the parents and
coaches in the Junior Club for their efforts for a job well done. A summary from the
Junior teams appears later in this report.
In2Cricket
The program really returned to the previous high standard under the care and coordination
of Mark Ham. Numbers rose to a very impressive 125 for the season. Our thanks to Mark
14
and his loyal helpers for running this vital grass roots introduction to cricket for local
youngsters. Unfortunately Mark is being transferred and so will not be able to continue
however the program will continue in capable hands.
CRICKET
The Cricket Sub-committee, chaired by Geoff Hickman, was responsible for selections
and running our senior teams, player recruitment and retention and the provision of
appropriate coaching to all Grades and to the Academy. A huge thank you to Geoff and
his committee for the hours of work they put in to have our best teams on the field every
week.
Selections
Selections for all teams were made by a four-member independent selection Committee
comprised of Mark Carmichael (Chairman), Tony Wilson, Geoff Hickman and Michael
Falk, with input from the Grade captains. Thanks to these gentlemen for their tireless, and
sometimes onerous, task of selecting teams.
The following are the final positions (at the end of regular fixtures) of the various grades
in the Sydney Cricket Association competition and their contribution to the Club
Championship:

Coaching and Practices
Ed Howitt Jnr worked tirelessly as Club Coach. Pre-season practices and fitness sessions
were held at the Institute of Sport at Narrabeen during August and then the turf nets at
Chatswood Oval during September. These were supplemented with several fitness
sessions at Curl during the pre-season.
Mark O’Neill was contracted as 1st Grade Coach. This included attendance at mid-week
training sessions and also at 1st Grade matches. The Club is very fortunate to have the
services of an excellent and well respected coach in Mark. Every player who was
instructed by Mark benefitted from his technical knowledge and experience. Bruce Edgar
continued as Green Shield coach with great success. Ed Howitt and Michael Falk assisted
with Green Shield practices.
15
Indoor sessions were arranged pre-season as well as during the season when inclement
weather occurred and were well attended. Thanks to Tony Wilson and James Packman for
booking and arranging these sessions.
Our thanks go to Ed Howitt (Snr & Jnr), Michael Falk and others who assisted at regular
midweek practice sessions.
Team Management
Mike Beverley again managed the First Grade Team with dedication and humour. His
versatility was demonstrated by not only filling in on the field but participation in the pregame warm up, recovering “lost” balls and tending to the particular needs of players.
Rob Carruthers managed the Poidevin-Gray team.
Graham Corderoy was again 1st Grade scorer, as well as our ever reliable President when
Graham was not available.
Andy Falk took over scoring duties for Second Grade in a difficult season.
Ed Howitt (Snr) again performed the dual responsibility as Manager and Scorer of Third
Grade.
Thanks also to Dick Huey for scoring for the 5th Grade Finals and assisting with
Chatswood Oval scoreboard.
Geoff Hickman and /or Michael Falk found their way to Killara around tea time for most
home 4th Grade games and the players appreciated their assistance.
The Club acknowledges and greatly appreciates the contribution made by these, and other,
dedicated members and parents for team management, scoring and afternoon tea-making
tasks on match days.
FACILITIES - GROUNDS
Chatswood Oval
34 of the maximum of 36 playing days were allocated to Men’s and Women’s matches at
Chatswood plus Qualifying Final and Semi Final games. Unfortunately groundsman
Glenn Paull broke his ankle early in the season which was not a good start. It was agreed
with Council to have a 4 week break in December/January for renovation of the ground.
This along with wet weather in January meant the normal cover of couch grass did not
come until late February. As usual the continued use of the ground by casual soccer
players wearing sprigged boots caused some bare patches and impacted the surface.
Due to the weather and not scarifying the square during renovation the grass cover
became prolific as the second half of the season progressed much to the concern of the
players. The greening of the square as the season progresses is normal and is a test for the
application of players to be able to adapt their technique and methods to ensure
consistency in their performance. It must be remembered that the use of covers greatly
assists consistency in wicket preparation however the temptation is to expect the same
16
type of wicket every week, if that is the expectation then you might as well play park
cricket on malthoid or synthetic pitches.
Practice wickets were generally not as good as previous seasons partly due to the injury to
the groundsman. Emphasis will be made to Council next season that practice wickets must
be prepared the same as the centre – watered, cut and rolled hard.
Nevertheless we thank Glenn Paull and Matt Kong for their efforts, willingness and
assistance during the season.
Bert Oldfield Oval (Killara Park)
Between the Club, Women’s Division and Green Shield the full number of available new
prepared wickets available were used.
The square generally played very well this season under the care of Tim Pittilo, the
energetic groundsman. Replacement of turf was not consistent to allow an even spread of
grass over the whole square however pitches were of a good standard most of the season.
Unfortunately a bad decision to replace some turf midweek late in the season, and
weather, played havoc for one round.
The high plastic fence kept dogs and people off the square for most of the time. The
outfield looked the best it has for several years following the abundant rain we had early
in the New Year. However the continued designation of the Oval as an “off leash dog
park” is an increasing worry. The constant use by dogs and walkers in all weather
degrades the oval surface and is a health concern, particularly for parents of younger
players.
Beauchamp Park
Beauchamp Park square developed an excellent covering of grass early in the season
which was maintained throughout. This resulted in very good strips for our lower grades
to play on and our thanks to Matt Kong for his efforts. The ground continued to be
designated as an “off leash dog park” by Council which is an ongoing concern for
preparation.
The efforts of players and a small number of volunteers laying and removing covers was
greatly appreciated at our three home grounds.
COMMUNICATIONS
Website
The season 2012-13 saw another successful operation of the GDCC website
(www.gordoncricket.com)
During the season the website averaged over 14,000 visits per month which not only
included our keen supporters and players, but also a large readership of other Sydney
Grade clubs and many followers from other parts of the world in particular Asia and the
UK.
17
There is no doubt this season the match reports provided by the players were at their best
providing an insight into the behind the scenes affairs of our players and the camaraderie
they have with each other. Almost without exception the reports were on-time and as each
one was put up on the site there was an obvious spike in visits.
In a first for our charity golf day, a pre-auction bidding system was introduced and two of
the items were sold via this medium. This was thanks to the sterling efforts of Dave Millar
whose excellent work on the back end of the system makes these ideas actually happen.
The Women’s and Juniors Clubs both were able to keep their websites up to date and
provided an increased level of communication to their players. Dave Millar has played a
big role in helping get this activity on these sites. This was also important within both
clubs as they look to increase and strengthen their pool of players through the Gordon
District.
Our sponsors again received good coverage from the website with Hickman and Ritchard
Financial Planning providing general sponsorship as well as Players’ of the Month and
Year competitions. Other sponsors included Mortgageport, Riboni Constructions, BOM
Pty. Ltd, Century 21 Cordeau Marshall and The Orchard Tavern.
During the winter we will be again looking at the site to see how we can interface it better
with social media and provide an even better level of communication for our followers.
Putting up a webmaster’s weekend wrap of 2,500 words with photos of players in each
grade, details of each match and results which is generally available on the site by
Saturday night is indeed a challenge.
About 300 photos of the various matches have to be collated to find the best ones and in
particular shots of players who have done well. They then have to be cropped for website
usage and at times made into “Collages” for the extra special performances.
Again this season both Michael Falk and Tony Wilson helped significantly with Michael’s
profound words for many of the games and Tiddles first class photos taken often at the
grounds that were the furthest from Chatswood. Without these two assistants and the
overall work of Dave Millar maintaining our site would not be possible and each winter
the Webmaster wonders whether the many hundreds of hours spent over the season can be
continued. When you think you can’t keep it going, a message like the following one from
Matt Kelly arrives to lift your spirit.
Quote:
“Even judged by your usually high standards, the round-up report from the weekend was
exceptional. Not too long, but filled with content and with the use of photos unparalleled
in an amateur-sport report, how can any other club compete with this?
We all know that culture is such an important commodity in a sporting club; but, it is so
difficult to define and even more difficult to capture. I have always believed that timely,
positive and colourful reporting is so important in achieving and maintaining a club’s
spirit.
18
It is often commented upon that we have a better website than every other club. However,
it often shocks me just how much better it is. Congratulations. Matt”
Thanks Matt, for the inspiration, but maybe this is also a good way to finish on a high and
let someone else spend the hours.

ACADEMY
After 12 years of the successful operation of our Gordon Cricket Academy it is difficult to
maintain the enthusiasm to constantly come up with new ideas that keep the aims and
goals of the Academy on track and provide us with a pathway for our young players in the
district to reach their cricketing potential. With Geoff Hickman, Tony Wilson and Michael
Falk and myself providing so many years of managing the Academy we needed some new
blood to give us a re-start. In the 2012-13 season this was provided by two new members
to our committee, the implementation of a new junior development squad and the reinvigorating of the Under 19 squad with a new purpose and exposure.
These two gentlemen were Bruce Edgar and Peter Klemt and their efforts have enabled
the Academy to complete the pathway for our junior cricketers that we have so long been
striving to achieve.
The new Junior Development Squad was made up of players from 12 to 14 years of age
who have displayed a high level of skill within their school, club or representative cricket
and can be assisted further with high level coaching. This squad is designed to form the
basis of our future Green Shield squad and is intended to allow them to access a level of
coaching they have not experienced to date in their short careers.
The squad was coached by former Test cricketer Bruce Edgar with the assistance of Ed
Howitt and Julian Stephenson in a specifically designed program over a 6 week period
during the winter months. The program set them up to develop their skills and be ready
for the demands of Green Shield cricket as they hone their cricketing skills and their
mental capacity to manage them effectively.
The Under 19 squad managed by Peter Klemt was made up mostly of players who have
played in the club’s Green Shield team and their priority is now their school sport and
studies.
While School is obviously a priority it is our goal to keep these players within the Gordon
“family” and provide high level skills training through specific sessions, matches against
School and University teams and importantly through an invitation to join the Club’s
training sessions on Tuesday’s and work with the First Grade squad when available. The
squad also had access to sessions that include communications, team building, fitness and
nutrition through a special weekend session. All sessions were designed to not interfere
with school commitments as much as possible and this proved a great success.
The Under 21 “High Performance” Squad had access during the season to Mark O’Neill
and again he provided a high level of coaching that saw several exceptional performances
from our younger players during the season. Tony Wilson did an outstanding job again
with this squad during the year.
19
The Academy is now structured so as to accommodate the needs of Under 14, Under 16,
Under 19 and Under 21 players in separate divisions that are designed to meet their
specific needs in their cricket ability and to provide a pathway to Gordon Grade cricket
and higher representative honors.
Very importantly the sessions and timing are designed to allow the players to also enjoy
their other sporting skills during the off season and try and keep them as balanced as
possible while developing their cricketing potential. This structure will continue during
the coming season with Geoff Hickman, Tony Wilson, Michael Falk, Bruce Edgar and
Peter Klemt already starting the planning for this season. These five gentlemen will enable
the Academy tradition to continue.
In closing I would like to thank all associated with the running of the Academy, in
particular Peter Horwitz for his generous and continued financial support and mentoring
assistance. Without Peter’s support we would not be able to provide so much enjoyment
and motivation to our young cricketers.

Again the Club is indebted to many people for their assistance and hard work throughout
the season.
Where would cricket clubs be without mothers to help? Gilly Packman, Jo Beverley, Sue
Evans, Kerrie Lewis and Agnes Smith were always there to provide afternoon tea at First
Grade home games. Also the Roughleys regularly provided tea for Second Grade games at
Chatswood. It all seems easy but it requires time, effort and commitment. Several parents
also assisted at home Colts and Green Shield games. Thank you all.
A huge “thank you” to Sam Buono, Andy Falk, Ed Howitt Snr and Tony Wilson for
helping put down and remove covers at our three grounds on game and other days. There
are also many other things which these gents did to make the grounds and equipment
ready for play and the players are indebted to them.
Special thanks to Michael Michael who over the years has helped me in numerous ways
with ground equipment and stepping in when I have been away on overseas “jaunts” to
organize covers etc. Whether it’s fixing a sight screen, sponge roller, covers trolley,
removing covers or picking up lunches he could be relied upon to do it right. I might have
to call on him again sometime!
20
The Club thanks Mark Ham for running an excellent in2Cricket program at Beauchamp
Park. Mark’s organizational and coaching skills were instrumental in increasing the
participation of this vital Club program. Also thanks to those who assisted him on
Saturday mornings. Players are always welcome to help out during the season.
Thanks very much to Geoff Hickman for managing the Cricket Committee, the U21
Academy, selections and assisting with statistics for this report.
A big thank you to Paul Stephenson for continuing to look after the website (ably assisted
by Dave Millar). Also thanks to Tony Wilson and Michael Falk for assisting with the
“weekend wrap” of match updates, as well as photos, in a timely way. Many supporters
now keep up to date with progress of teams through the website.
Finally my thanks again to Andy Falk for giving me the benefit of his experience in
administering the Club to a successful season.

FIRST GRADE REPORT
James Packman
After reading through last year's report it is uncanny how many similarities came up about
our year. They generally tend to be of a frustrating nature, 'what if', 'if only we had...',
'next year'. Well there comes a time when enough is enough and I believe the 15 guys in
the current group can take our 1st grade side all the way, even next season, provided a
couple of things happen - the team can score hundreds within the top 6, 3 of the top six
batters average somewhere near 40 and we bowl consistently one side of the wicket.
There are a number of known changes to the team from last season. In particular, Brendan
McDonald will be putting his kit away indefinitely. This is a big loss for the side, although
Macca would be the first to suggest he would have liked to have bowled better last season
(and be given more overs). We congratulate Brendan on a fantastic career to date, one
which has seen him travel the countryside in search of that elusive First Class cap, taken
him to England and feature in many State 2nd XI fixtures. Hats off to a determined and
extremely competitive “leggie”, who often gave much needed support to the quicks and
tied down an end during the course of the day. Brendan also provided much entertainment
with the bat and showed his all-round abilities on numerous occasions when the team
needed him. We won't see a better catcher of the ball in slip - full stop! The door has been
somewhat left open for a return to cricket. However, should golf and fishing take over for
good we congratulate BMac on a super career.
Another effort to single out is the O'Reilly medallist, Harry Evans. A stellar effort to win a
very prestigious award but unfortunately wasn't around to be recognised by his peers at
the Sydney Grade awards presentation night; however, he should be very proud of this
achievement. Hopefully this will be the launching pad for the next step in his cricket
career.
In addition we will see a new Captain next season as the author is standing aside for the
new breed to take the helm. Whoever it is will no doubt be leading a group of players who
can put Gordon firmly on the map as premiership contenders. Personally the role has been
very rewarding and at times very challenging. Nevertheless, a great experience which I
have enjoyed over the past 4 years or so.
The following are highlights from on the field
Campbelltown first up and Harry Evans’ first hundred of the year and he took 3 wickets.
Bevo showed his determination and was not out at the close of the innings. Bmac's first
game back in Stags colours was encouraging with 4 wickets and 70. Not enough other
contributions with the bat to reach the 290 required and innings closed 40 runs short.
Bankstown was one that we should have won, lost, won, lost and then won again... it
ended up in a tie (probably fitting). Smithy the main wicket taker with 4 and an almost
match winning 58, along with Harry's 61. It almost gathered us 6 points, alas we settled
for 3.
Northern Districts up the train line was a great learning experience. After being 0-111,
ND's were all out for 199 on a very good batting wicket. Good discipline and fielding
restricted the opponents and allowed Harry to again burgle 4 wickets. Bevo saw us home
22
with a strong half century against his old foe (moons ago), a satisfying innings for him no
doubt.
Sydney Uni again for some reason did not appreciate the visit from the Stags. Kennedy
and Evans doing the damage with the ball, Heaney took the big scalp of Mail and we were
only chasing 140. Greg Lewis and Reece ('the rock and the romantic') got us into a
winning position and then some valuable batting from Bevo, Bmac and Smithy took us to
a score over 300.
Manly, at home, saw the visitors bowled out for 230, Kennedy and Evans the chief
destroyers with the ball, and it was the beginning of a little wicket taking duel between the
two. Harry then did everything right except score a hundred and a valuable 47 from
Bombas followed by not outs from Smithy and Bmac took us past the required runs, a
solid win against a decent side.
The start of the one-dayers and first up Easts; one that we should have won! Not enough
runs on the board and not batting the full 50 overs proved costly in the end. One highlight
- Iain Beverley took 5 dismissals. Best of the batting was Daniel Smith with 47 at better
than a run a ball.
We were away against Mosman on a below par Rawson Oval chasing 190 on a wicket
which was going to get lower and slower as the day wore on. Brendan McDonald
produced a little gem of an innings at the top of the order and put us a long way to
winning the match with 68 and Harry showed some class with a 45n.o. to close it out.
St George away (yet again) was a really big win with conditions favouring bowling.
Kennedy took advantage with 4 scalps and Saints were out for 86. Packman and Colley
contributed enough to get us past the score with a bonus point win. However, neither
remained not out!
Randwick hosted us at picturesque Coogee Oval. Certainly not our best performance
leading up to Christmas break and we bowled both sides of the wicket to allow a total of
262 (Kennedy again the pick of the seamers). Nevertheless, it was achievable and would
require one decent score and a number to bat around him. Not to be - starts were not
converted and the game lost.
Blacktown was a good way to get back into the swing of things post-Christmas break.
Disciplined line and length and one side of the wicket from Daniel Smith bagged him 5
wickets and Kennedy a stock standard 3 - Blacktown 110 all out. We replied with 203 all
out and Daniel followed up his efforts with the ball by passing half a century and was not
out. Blacktown was all out for 109, the wickets shared in the 2nd innings - Smith, Heaney
and Soper collecting 3 each. We needed 20 odd and got them easily. Well done, outright
points to keep within the top 6.
Fairfield away is always tough. The wicket looked underprepared and we had first use of
it. Unfortunately we gave away too many runs (although 160 didn't look like it). Wickets
shared again - Evans 4 (now mounting quite a tally), Kennedy 3 (trying to stay with
Harry) and Smith 3. We didn't play the conditions well and were staring down the barrel
of following on. Some aggression by Chad and Kennedy got us past the hundred mark.
However, we were outplayed.
23
Sutherland was a 2 dayer but restricted to one due to the weather. We batted first and put
up a target of 279, which in the end proved about right, as Sutherland were 7/277 when
the last ball had been bowled. Harry scored 81 and Macca finished the innings off
strongly. However, a number of 30's and 40's left us short of posting a winning target and
leaving enough time to take the 10 wickets.
Parramatta saw the introduction of Jules Stephenson, who didn't waste any time, taking 5
wickets on his return to the top grade. Only 3 bowlers were used to dismiss Parra for 89,
Smith and Kennedy removing the remaining batsman. Gordon passed the total with
contributions from Packman, Evans and Richtor and declared 7/170. The game finished
not long after.
Next, the strong UNSW at home. Uni. declared at 240 and left a very achievable total.
However we were all out for 201 with Colley making a useful 70 and Bevo again being
not out in his 40s.
On to play Sydney at Drummoyne and a position in the finals if we won. We were chasing
a competitive 251, with the wickets being shared. The top 6 didn't put up their hand and
again it was left to the lower order. Iain Beverley finishing the season strongly with a
great knock of 74, supported by Harry Turner (in his first game in the top grade), and
Macca towards the back end of the innings. We fell short of the total and probably our
potential.
Thankyou goes out to a number of people who help to make the year enjoyable and run
smoothly.
First, our tea ladies week in week out produce some of the best spreads seen across the
competition. The side is very grateful for the effort that goes into getting these prepared
for our home games. We thank all involved - Jo Beverley, Sue Evans, Gilly Packman,
Kerry Lewis and Agnes Smith.
Again major contributions and thank you’s to our President, Andrew Falk (always there
when needed), the all-rounder Jim Cattlin (Covers Marshall and enforcer, shop supplies,
grounds maintenance and the list goes on), Tony Wilson (lower grades selector, covers
contributor), and Mark Carmichael (Chairman of Selectors and mediator).
Game day doesn't function without our Scorer and Manager. Graham Corderoy manned
the ink again and provided much needed support when needed. Commiserations for the
loss of your Mum this season Graham, glad our little gesture at the St George game was
able to provide some comfort and support. I look forward to having you on board again in
season 2013/14. The Ger (Mike Beverley) was again at his efficient best and I think he
has found a winning formula for the drinks and the ability to have something cold to sip
on throughout the day. The cordial bottles are defrosted at differing stages throughout the
day to enable a refreshing beverage at any point in time. Great to have you as part of the
team and on board for next season (he wants a premiership!!!!!)
Sparky, it has been said, is 'still the best batting coach' in the country - bar none! Australia
has missed the boat there. Fortunate for us, however, as we hope to secure his services for
next season although we know that bigger things wait within Australia. The guys need to
tap into his wealth of knowledge and experience.
Signing off for another season and the last time this report will be pencilled from me!

SECOND GRADE REPORT
Elliot Richtor
The 2012/13 season saw a new look second grade side. There were only three players who
were selected in last year’s washed out qualifying final, and one from the side that had
lost the grand final the year before. New to the team were the likes of Kris Colley and
Adam Cubbage who were given their opportunity in a higher grade. We also welcomed
back Anthony Edington who hadn’t played for the club since 2005.
The 2012/13 fixture card contained 15 matches, one less than the previous year. There
were nine 2-dayers, six 1-dayers and this season saw officials scrap the lower grades T20
format. When reviewing the fixture list at the start of the season, it appeared challenging,
as we would play last season’s top 4 teams in the first five rounds.
During the season we played some good cricket, but this was unfortunately accompanied
by some really poor cricket. We failed to maintain our standards over a full day which
would cost us dearly throughout the season.
At our best we could compete with anyone in the competition. The games we won were
against Bankstown (finished 2nd), St George (1st at the time we played them and finished
3rd), Mosman (5th at time we played them) and won first innings but lost outright against
Sydney University (1st at time we played them). We also played well against Parramatta
(finished 1st), posting 294, but never got a chance to bowl at them due to the weather.
Other games where we competed well but fell just short included Manly, Campbelltown
and Sutherland.
The Sydney University game really hurt us mentally. We posted 211 on a slightly wet,
green pitch, which we thought would be enough. The bowling performance that followed
was our best of the season. Julian Stephenson and Chad Soper bowled brilliantly, not
giving the batsmen anything. Jules ended up with 8 wickets and Chad 1. The remarkable
thing was Jules and Chad bowled the whole of the first session on day 2 and of the 61.2
overs bowled, Jules and Chad bowled 55 overs between them. We bowled Uni out for 113
- had we bowled them out for 111 we could have enforced the follow on. The batting
performance that followed was our worst of the season, bowled out for 85 in 34 overs
leaving Sydney Uni to get 184 off 26 overs, a feat achieved on the last ball of the game.
The batting was really a problem throughout the season. In the end we quite simply did
not score enough runs. There was no partnership over 100, and no individual centuries.
We only managed to score over 250 on three occasions. There were plenty of starts but no
one capitalised from spending time at the wicket. After the Christmas break, Harry Turner
posted scores of 45, 44, 80 and 70 which resulted in him being promoted to First grade for
the last game of the season. Other notable performances with the bat included:
 Brett Rosen – 67 vs Campbelltown; 64 vs Manly; 56 vs Parramatta
 Jordan Liddle – 80 vs Northern District
 Adam Cubbage – 54* vs Mosman; 71* vs Sutherland
 Elliot Richtor – 66 vs Fairfield Liverpool
 Henry Carmichael - 54 vs Manly
 Cam Eccles – 64 vs Mosman; 71 vs Parramatta
28
The bowling was the strength of the side. However, in the majority of games we were
defending sub-par totals. There were many bowling highlights throughout the season.
Julian Stephenson was the most consistent and dangerous bowler taking 2 or more wickets
each game. His best performances were 8/50 (28 overs) vs. Sydney University, 6/49 vs.
Bankstown, 4/70 vs. Sutherland, and, when promoted to first grade, 5/35 vs. Parramatta.
In second grade he took 35 wickets, with his total of 44. A great season for Jules!
Chad Soper and Anthony Edington supported Jules well, picking up 12 and 16 wickets
respectively. Chad spent half the season in first grade after his performance against Manly
– 4/19. Edo’s best performances were against Blacktown – 4/53, and St George – 3/34.
Both also pitched in with some valuable performances with the bat to get out us of trouble
and post some respectable scores. Adam Cubbage also batted well coming in down the
order. He ended up scoring 352 runs for the season. The weather throughout the season
meant that pitches weren’t really suited to spinners. However the leggies provided by
Cubbage and Kurt Roughley contributed by picking up 28 wickets (14 each) during the
season. Roughley also picked up a hat trick in the last game of the season.
The find of the season was Charlie Stobo, who played the last three games before
Christmas. He showed great composure and maturity. He swung the ball and beat the bat
on many occasions. His best figures were 2/25 vs. Mosman and 2/13 off 8 overs against St
George. Charlie is in his last year of school and will play a full season of grade next year.
He is a promising talent and will push for higher selection in the near future.
At the end of the season we finished last, which was really disappointing, especially
because we played some really good cricket at times. However, we played poor cricket
too. The side really lacked consistency and failed to dominate a full game. The players
will be better for the experience and will come back next year wiser and hungrier for
success.
I would like to thank our band of volunteers and supporters for their assistance each
Saturday. Central to this was Andy Falk for managing the team throughout the year, Jim
Cattlin and Co. for ensuring everything at Chatswood ran smoothly, and finally, to all
parents and partners for supporting us each weekend and helping prepare teas.

THIRD GRADE REPORT
Ed Howitt (Jnr)
Let me begin with one word……PREMIERS! It was a season which will ultimately be
remembered for winning the competition. It will also be a season remembered for the way
we progressed as a team in terms of performance and the camaraderie we developed on
and off the field. A real key to any team is accepting people for who they are and
respecting each other. I really felt we became a team rather than a group of cricketers and
this was a crucial factor in our success. The team was a mix of youth and experience,
together with dominant and timid personalities. It was a successful blend and one which
meant we lost only 2 games all season, finished 2nd after the preliminary rounds and
completely dominated the finals series (except for some minor palpitations against
Bankstown in the semi-final). I should also mention that our fielding, both on the ground
and in the air, was near faultless. This element, together with our running between
wickets, was far superior to all sides we played during the finals and generally throughout
the season.
Before I start with the mandatory player critiques, I believe it would be remiss of me not
to thank all the players who played in 3rd Grade this season. Some of them contributed
more than others, but each played a part in ensuring our lofty position on the table after
the preliminary rounds and the gaining of a home ground advantage for the start of the
finals series. In the same breath, thank you to Ben Garratt who missed all the season with
injury but put his hand up to be our 12th man for the finals. A great club man who sneaked
onto the field in the semi to replace the injury stricken skipper.
The following players were integral parts of our season and their commitment to the cause
was unwavering:
Damon Livermore
Reg opened all season (undoubtedly his best position) and showed his prowess with a 500
run season. In my opinion, he was in good enough form to make it a 700 run season. A big
score or two eluded him, but his innings vs Sydney Uni in both the preliminary round and
grand final were signs that he will keep churning out runs for the GDCC. Reg is now the
3rd highest run scorer of all time and I suspect may be eyeing off the top position. During
the season he was again a valuable source of ideas and advice on the field. Off the field,
with his new found hobby, he could be found in the back of the dressing room out of
harm’s way and keeping company with Atko.
Chris Spratt
Spratty swanned straight into our side come the end of the GPS competition and start of
our finals series. 3 games in 3rd grade for Spratty equalled a premiership. I am not sure
anyone has played in fewer games before winning a premiership for Gordon. Spratty
brought a very positive attitude to our team in the difficult opening position and
performed admirably. In the final, Spratty and Reg took the game away from Sydney Uni,
after Adair’s bowler heroics, with an explosive start which saw us reach 61 off just 10
overs. I look forward to seeing more of Chris Spratt over the coming years. He is an
exciting player, with all the shots and hopefully he learns when to play these shots and be
patient when the ball’s not there to put away. We may even get a few words out of him in
the dressing room in due course (ditto Clem Bromwich).
32
Ian Higgins
Missy took on the role at No.3 this season and was instrumental in ensuring our innings
were set up with solid contributions. I want to say more than solid, but his stats suggest a
season with plenty of starts and no big scores. He is a much better player when his feet are
moving, he is confident and he plays straight. We saw glimpses of all these attributes at
times this season and hopefully next season will see bigger scores and more runs. Missy’s
fielding was outrageous at times this season and many times provided the team with great
inspiration. He managed to lift the side with sheer brilliance and we should also not forget
he donned the gloves against Fairfield and finished with 6 scalps. If only he could bowl!!
Clem Bromwich
Like Missy, a confident Brom is pretty good to watch. Unfortunately, we only saw
glimpses of his power and destruction this season. Clem had plenty of opportunities
during the season, but at times looked unsure when to be aggressive or subdued. When on
song, Clem hits a very good ball and it was a real shame we didn’t see more of him
against spinners this season. The Brom will be a good player for Gordon when he feels
comfortable with his game and any big scores in the future will no doubt be very exciting
to watch.
Mark Atkinson
Atko joined us this season and to say his acquisition was a bonus would be an
understatement. He scored a 100 on debut and followed this with 98 to show he really
meant business. Atko scored 700+ runs at 70 and captained the team on four occasions
with great success. He brought to our team a heap of runs, a heap of experience and was
the catalyst for our excellent running between the wickets. I really attribute this improved
facet of the game to Atko and hope players in future learn from the way Mark puts
pressure on a fielding side. His catching all season was exemplary and the introduction to
champagne in our dressing definitely brought out another side to his character.
Tjaard Tait
Taity consolidated his place in 3rd grade with some really significant contributions with
bat, ball and in the field. Although he did not make many big scores, the partnerships he
was involved in on numerous occasions were instrumental in us winning games. This was
evident in the semi-final when he and Max Newman joined forces at 4/38 and saw us to
the cusp of victory. Taity occupied the crease for long periods in both the quarter and
semi=finals to not only ensure victory but completely take the game away from the oppostion. His offies really improved this season and his 17 wickets were a reflection of a really
good all round contribution to our side. I should also mention his punctuality was much
improved and he was also responsible for acting as chauffeur for our wine-laden opening
bowler for much of the season.
Max Newman
Max progressed to 3rd Grade after his brilliant performances contributed towards the
success of 5th Grade last season. Max is a very good keeper and more than handy batsmen.
He was the leading keeper statistically during the season and his glove work was always
of the highest quality. He really would not be out of place in higher grades. Another who
did not make any big scores, however Max’s innings against Bankstown in the semi final
was vital in ensuring we progressed to the Grand Final. Max is a player destined to move
upwards, albeit after his year off next season when he studies overseas.
James Kidd
33
James established himself in 3rd grade this season with some exceptional performances.
Kiddy bowled more consistently and took on the responsibility of taking the new ball with
great success. I will always remember taking James aside at Bankstown, a side with an
imposing batting line up, and saying to him that he was the leader of the attack on this
occasion and needed him to step up. He routed the Dogs, taking 6 for and on this day
showed to me a new found maturity to his cricket. James still fancies himself with the bat,
but I would like to see some more inspiring innings in order to be convinced of his batting
prowess.
Adair Durie
Where do I start? I think firstly it must be made very clear the small analysis of this
particular individual will not do justice to his efforts on and off the field. As a captain, he
is the perfect bowler to have in your team. He can bowl long spells and always ask
questions of the batsmen. I think Adair got better as the season went on and really led
from the front in the finals series. I know everyone will talk about his heroics in the grand
final ( 8/56 off 35 overs), but I think we will also have memories of his destruction of the
Saints batting line up prior to Xmas and his 6/45 against Hawkesbury in the quarter final.
I really believe Adair brought us together off the field by leading some incredibly funny
and enjoyable sessions in the change room. Each home game (and some away) he would
turn up with numerous bottles of wine and champagne and we would enjoy these together
(except those on their P’s) and listen to his dribble about aroma, texture and flavours.
Blaize Irving-Holliday
When you give the ball to Blaize you know you are going to get 100% commitment.
Blaize moved rapidly up the grades after joining Gordon not long after the start of the
season and gained an opportunity in 3rd Grade late in the season and never looked back.
Blaize is a very passionate person, has a massive heart and at times can be very hard on
himself when circumstances are going against him. His spell against Bankstown in the
semi-finals (5-10 off 24 overs) was nothing short of amazing. Another who fancies his
batting skills and we all look forward to the day he delivers on those promises of hitting
the biggest sixes we will ever see.
Charlie Bangs
Charlie was our most consistent bowler for the first 5 rounds and then overseas beckoned
and he did not return to our team until after Xmas. Unfortunately, the break and a terrible
accident involving Charlie and his family, meant he did not keep his spot and missed out
on our finals campaign. Charlie has the ability to move the ball both off the seam and in
the air and is a bowler who must continue to pitch the ball up and allow the ball to
challenge the batsmen. We should also not forget his heroics with the bat at Fairfield.
Chasing 78, and being 9/75, Charlie launched a boundary over long on to win the game
and bag a very important 6 points for the team.
A successful season relies on an incredible amount of support off the field. The Gordon
Cricket Club is extremely fortunate to have numerous volunteers who provide a support
structure to allow us to play and train for a great cricket club. It is as simple, yet as
significant, as that! As a club, we cannot thank all our committees enough for the behind
the scenes preparation and organisation they undertake to provide the players with the best
possible chance of playing. Jim Cattlin and Tony Wilson are amazing examples of one’s
passion for a sporting organisation. I would also like to thank Ed Howitt (Snr) for his
superb, unassuming role as manager and scorer of a premiership winning team. We are
34
extremely fortunate to have this role covered and I know he enjoyed the wines after the
game and driving Missy on game day. Next season, to make your life a little easier Ed, we
will ban players accessing their mobiles whilst scoring.
My congratulations to 5th grade for achieving back to back premierships; they really
inspired our team on the 2nd day of the Grand Final with what can only be called an
amazing comeback. Well done to 4th Grade, 6th grade and our Green Shield sides for
making the finals of their respective competitions.
Next season brings expectations of an improved position in the club championship, more
premierships and a social scene that will bring all grades together and create greater pride
in each other’s performances.

FOURTH GRADE REPORT
Shayne Lin
Similar to the start of previous seasons, hopes were high for strong club, team and
individual performances. Over the past five seasons or so the Stags have become a very
strong club and expectations were high to perform well this season. The Fourth Grade side
was very much a mix of youth and experience from teenagers to 40 year olds.
There were many highlights throughout the year as well as the odd tough patch we needed
to work through.
The season started up with a win against the Ghosts all the way out at Raby with the
stand-out performers being Mitch Kleem with a very patient 90 and a 6-wicket haul to
Alex Jackson. Mitch started the season in fine fashion by entering the vacated change
rooms up on Raby 1 whilst the lads began the warm up for the first day of the season.
The following weeks were tough with a close loss against Bankstown and a flogging by
ND’s handing stand-in skipper John O’Neill-Fuller his first of many failures for the year.
It was pretty clear after the first 3 rounds of the year the bowling needed a dramatic
overhaul if we were to trouble opposition batsman.
Top side Sydney Uni was to be the opposition in Round 4 which was the perfect way to
kick start the year. We knocked over Sydney Uni for 158 in the first innings with Jack
Richardson taking his first five wicket haul in grade on Australian soil. The talk in the
sheds to the batsmen was to dominate the opposition bowlers and take the 6 points with a
couple of wickets down. The batsmen delivered, blasting 288 off 60 overs to set up a
fighting chance of outright victory. The followers of Fourth Grade over the years will
know about the fight this team puts in when the backs are against the wall. When the
game was heading for a draw we never lost sight of knowing one wicket could swing the
game. Michael “Chilli” Perry rolled through the Uni middle order with 4 wickets in 8
overs on a flat track. Before we knew it, and only 38 overs into the Uni 2nd innings, we
had secured the 10 points and our season was back on track. Chilli was a major
contributor to the team this season claiming our Players’ Player award. His bowling in the
first half of the year saved us on many occasions and his batting in the middle order
finished off many close games.
We then moved on to play Manly away. This is personally my favourite game every year
when we play for the Mal Hall trophy – a trophy we have never lost, always seeming to
win the unwinnable. This year was to be no different. After being in serious trouble at
7/90 chasing 230 against a very good Manly attack, we managed to chase down the total 7
down. I had the pleasure that day of standing up the other end watching young Axel
Cahlin play a very mature innings well beyond his years, no doubt a player to watch in the
future.
We don’t need to mention the loss against Easts as we moved into the final game before
Christmas against Randwick Petersham. After being rolled for 90, the word around the
grounds was, “Don’t worry, fours will probably bowl them out for 70.” The bowling
foursome of Dowler, Selby, Skilbeck and Irving-Holliday calmly knocked over the
Randwick batting order for 88 and we took the points. The spell by Blaize was
frightening, not just because of the pace he was bowling but we just didn’t know what he
38
was going to do next. After my first match with Blaize, I wasn’t sure how to take the fiery
character but throughout the season, Blaize fitted in well with his new club and as a
keeper it was great fun keeping to a bowler with pace and bounce. It must be noted in this
report that Blaize’s mum was out much later than Blaize during the Third Grade
celebration in Kings Cross!
At the halfway point of the year the team was well entrenched in the top 6, despite some
inconsistent performances.
We started the New Year by smashing Blacktown, Fairfield and Mosman. The highlight
was certainly Anthony “Pic” Sherman’s 157 not out against Fairfield. It was the Pic of old
with every second ball disappearing over the fence with some harsh treatment being
handed out to the Fairfield spinners. Pic was one of our most consistent performers this
year and I think we all know why!
We then knocked off Sutherland in a brilliant run chase. Being 5/120 Chilli scored the
winning runs on the final ball of the day after controversy overshadowed what was a
fantastic game of cricket.
After the miracle wash out against Parramatta we played UNSW in a rain affected game.
It was a comfortable win and a great day for one of our long serving club members and a
bloke with whom I have played a lot of my cricket at Gordon. Mitch Kleem passed the
5000 run mark during this game and in typical fashion smashed 109 of about 80 balls.
After five overs, Mitch had made 50 and with the total on 50, his partner Nick Coleman
was yet to get off the mark. Congratulations Mitch on a wonderful milestone and no doubt
you will be adding to that tally in the 2013/14 season.
The final game of the regular season saw us taking on first placed Sydney with the winner
of the match deciding the minor premiership. Sydney took the honours and it was a fourth
placed finish for us.
Our semi-final opponent was Bankstown out at Graham Thomas. We had played some
good cricket in the second half of the year and were confident of a good result and JOF
improving on his average of 1 in the New Year. We won the toss and sent Bankstown in
on the flattest of decks. We certainly had our chance to take 11 wickets with a few things
not going our way. The end result was 170 overs in the field for Bankstown’s 510 runs.
The weekend was summed up when the third new ball disappeared into the creek - the
team stood around in a huddle, tired and delirious, until everyone at once burst out in
laughter. It was disappointing to bow out the way we did but as captain I was very proud
of everyone in the side for the way they tried for the entire game.
It was an absolute pleasure playing with Fourth Grade this season. It was the great mix of
characters that made every Saturday enjoyable. The effort was there the entire year and
that’s all we can ask of each individual.
Thank you also goes out to all those people that ensure we have 6 teams on the park each
week. Everyone from coaches and committee members and all those that spend hours
each week pulling covers on and off wickets making sure our grounds are ready for the
weekends. It is a massive effort and certainly doesn’t go unnoticed by the players.

FIFTH GRADE REPORT
David Monaghan
After the highs of a dominant 2011/12 season, taking out both the minor premiership and
premiership, it was going to be tough to back that up. With many players either moving up
the grades or having other commitments, only half of the team from last year's grand final
were in 5th Grade for the first round. Significantly, only two would be there at season's
end. Therefore, to be successful and retain the Sherwood Cup, the newcomers to 5th
Grade had to perform from the outset and the Gordon committee needed to find the right
balance, not just for 5th Grade but for all grades. Simply, it required a club effort!
37 players contributed to the 5th Grade season averaging 5.4 games per player. In a total
of 18 matches it's a telling statistic around the variation of the team and producing
conditions that may make it difficult to find consistency, confidence, form and enjoyment
in the game.
To add to the challenges, a change in leadership early in the season threatened to de-rail
chances of back-to-back Sherwoods.
With these obstacles in our way and not to mention the 19 other teams vying for the same
trophy, WE DID IT! WE ARE BACK-TO-BACK SHERWOOD CHAMPIONS!!
How ... you might ask?
Below is a round by round account of all wins, losses, trials, tribulations, emotions,
victories, triumphs and stars.
Round 1 2DAY vs. Campbelltown-Camden (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Won by 95 runs
Batting first we assembled 312 runs in just under 80
overs
Stars: Liam McElduff 113
A debut ton for Gordon and a match winning
innings
Nick Coleman 51
Combined with Liam for an opening stand of 128
Dan Stickland 4-38
Earning a call up to 4th grade
Round 2 2DAY vs. Bankstown (Grahame Thomas Oval)
Result: Won by 4 wickets
Bowling first we took our chances and were never
in doubt
Stars: David Monaghan 5-43
A second 5-wicket haul for the club
Tom Cockburn 52
A captain's knock cementing our win
Tristan Cooper 34
Combining with Tom provided the match winning
partnership
Round 3 2DAY vs. Northern District (Storey Park)
Result: Won by 88 runs
Batting first we again posted a total above 300,
326 in 61 overs
Stars: Will Phillips 80
Deserved a century
David Monaghan 4-38, 46 An all round contribution
Tom Cockburn 46
Deserved a 50, partnered Will to take the score
over 200
43
Round 4 2DAY vs. Sydney Uni (St Paul's College)
Result: Won by 25 runs
GF rematch, fortunate to win as Sydney Uni had 10
batsmen
Stars:
Matt Todd 7-81
Wicket machine at it again
Darren Jayasekera 52
A solid half century showing natural finesse and skill
Change in leadership: Tom Cockburn leaves for the US and captaincy is handed to
David Monaghan
Round 5 2DAY vs. Manly (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Won by 2 wickets
Restricting Manly to 140, we did enough to get
home
Stars: Matt Selby 4-17
Best strike rate in 5th grade
Blaize Irving-Holliday 4-21 Angriest man in cricket
Up until this point our title defence was on track. We were on top of the ladder by 4
points, we had a couple of matches where we posted totals above 300, and the initial
spells for our bowlers were proving fruitful. However, whether it was complacency, a lack
of motivation or enjoyment, the next few rounds highlighted some holes in our armour.
Round 6 1DAY vs. Eastern Suburbs (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Lost by 17 runs
At 7 for 90, East's tail wagged to post a winning
total of 177
Stars: Blaize Irving-Holliday 37 Made our run-chase respectable with some big
hitting
David Monaghan 3-31
Q: Where is Matt Todd?
Round 7 1DAY vs. Mosman (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Won by 180 runs + BP
One of those matches we wanted to play a 2 day
game
Stars: Corbin Edgar 92
Run out!!
Iqbal Ahmed 4-24
Proving too difficult for the batsmen to put away
Nick Coleman 42
Mr Consistency proving to be a solid foundation
for our batting
Round 8 1DAY vs. St George (Cahill Park)
Result: Lost by 1 run
A game that may have decided the minor
premiership
Stars: Deva Nirthanakumaran 3- Asked to bowl the final over (after umpires
17
mis-calculated)
David Monaghan 47
Threw away a 50 - one of three stumped
Gordons
Matt Selby 2-23
This guy caused a few issues later in the
season!
44
Round 9 1DAY vs. Randwick-Petersham (Kensington Oval)
Result: Won by 5 wickets
Chasing 198 ... no sweat says Reagan (11 overs
to spare)
Stars: Reagan Klemt 111*, 2-23
The rise of a true star
Harrison Middlebrook 2-23 Another up and comer, great consistency in lines
and length
At the Christmas break, we were placed 2nd, 10 points behind St George who were
clearly setting the benchmark for the grade. There were matches where we struggled to
close out an innings, i.e. find the last few wickets. However, we took confidence in
knowing we competed and almost won against St George with players missing (most
noticeably Matt Todd). Thankfully, Toddy returned after Christmas, refreshed and
enthusiastic to get his hands on Sherwood.
Round 10 1DAY vs. Blacktown (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Won by 54 runs
Batted the 50 overs for 265 (too many on Beauchamp)
Stars: Connor Jackson 89
Great knock, shots to all parts of the ground
Dom Thomson 71
Good return for consistency each week
Bowlers
Wickets were equally shared between 5 bowlers
Round 11 2DAY vs. Fairfield-Liverpool (Don Dawson Oval)
Result: Lost by 63 runs
Beaten by a better side, could not bowl them out
in 88 overs
Stars: Reagan Klemt 73
Gave us hope but could not find a partner to the
end
Tom Carruthers 61
Showed his natural talent with the bat (but not
with the tape!)
5th Grade over the past few years have demonstrated a relaxed and enjoyable style of
cricket. Still competitive and true to the game, there may have been a few corners cut in
drills or warm ups (I'll add that players were given the option to do so). However, we
probably reached a stage where we may have been too relaxed; the club song was not
sung after winning matches and there were at times poor punctuality, i.e. turning up late to
games and leaving before all equipment was put away. You could say this was somewhat
of a feature in round 12 which happened to work in our favour.
Round 12 1DAY vs. Sutherland (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Won by 112 runs + BP Batted the 50 overs for 259 (again too many on
Beauchamp)
Stars: David Monaghan 81
TC was replaced by DM as opener due to being late
Dom Thomson 70
Yet another fine contribution
Nick Coleman 46
Deserved a 50 but solid in his opening stand of 128
with DM
Round 13 2DAY vs. Parramatta (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Draw (wash out)
Posting 171, we had them at 3-9 off 17 overs
Stars: David Monaghan 70, 1-3 Retaining the opening position and seeing 6
different partners
Jack Richardson 39, 1-4
Proving his status of an all rounder to all
Orion Dowler 22, 1-0
Had Parramatta in all sorts at the death of play
45
Round 14 2DAY vs. UNSW (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Won Outright by an innings & 18 runs
Stars: Matt Todd 7-80
Including yet another Michelle, too good at this
level
Andrew Coleman 84
Ran out of puff with the captain threatening to
declare on him
Jack Richardson 4-42, 48*
Still asking for a promotion, particularly as we
declared on him
David Monaghan 8 catches Out of 16 wickets, 8 were caught by DM (good
field placement)
Round 15 1DAY vs. Sydney (Ryde Oval)
Result: Won by 108 runs + BP
Battled hard on a tricky wicket posting 159 after
48.3 overs
Stars: Nick Miller 2-5, 25
A young all-round star in the making
Matt Selby 3-4
Has a habit of finding wickets in quick succession
Matt Todd 3-17
With the pitch to assist, Sydney had no chance
Amil Premawardhana 28
A great innings, showing grit and determination
At the end of the regular season, we fell one win short (6 points) behind the minor
premiers, St George. Importantly, we were placed second which meant we had the
advantage of being the higher ranked team, gaining home ground advantage.
Looking back at each game, the only hiccup (where we had control) was round 6 versus
Easts. The loss to St George was a close contest where, on another day, the result could
have easily been reversed. Ironically, the placings for the qualifying finals resulted in a
match-up against Fairfield. We knew their strengths, we knew ours, and we knew it was
going to be a test.
Round QF 2DAY vs. Fairfield-Liverpool (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Won by 62 runs
After a shaky start, we consolidated 208 runs on a slow
outfield
Stars: Jack Richardson 58
At 5-96, Jack's contribution was invaluable
Andrew Coleman 57
As the first 3 bats left the ball, Elton showed true class
Orion Dowler 4-18
Instrumental in the demise of the opposition, a
stunning spell
Matt Todd 3-38
Finals are here, as are the nerves, but experience shines
through
Our next finals match-up was against Parramatta, the team we drew with as a result of a
wash out on the second day. Again it was going to be tough based on (1) knowing they
were a strong batting side (if not the strongest), and (2) when we batted against them their
skipper proved difficult to face. I really felt that winning the toss on this occasion was
critical, and thankfully we did.
Round SF 2DAY vs. Parramatta (Beauchamp Park)
Result: Won by 66 runs
Secret to success (or maybe not a secret) 'runs on
the board'
Stars: David Monaghan 59, 3-22 A 110-run opening partnership was exactly what
was ordered
Dom Thomson 58
Both openers still there at lunch
46
Orion Dowler 3-42
In form and on fire, the batsmen literally could not
play him
At last, the grand final weekend. Plenty of nerves and excitement. Concern around the
weather, particularly as St George won their QF and SF matches to be ranked as the
higher team.
We knew from our round match and the fact that St George had displayed some dominant
wins (evident by their quotient being 39% greater than ours) that if we were to retain the
Sherwood, everyone individually and as a team had to perform - and everyone did exactly
that!
Round GF 2DAY vs. St George (Pratten Park)
Result: Won by 18 runs
How did we win with 139 runs and bowling at 3108?
Stars: Matt Selby 5-15 (MoM)
An unbelievable spell of bowling, including 3
wickets in one over
David Monaghan 46, 62
Laid down a solid foundation for the team
Jack Richardson 3-22
Impeccable lines and a wicket to seal back-toback Sherwoods
Deva Nirthanakumaran 1-6 The wicket that started the collapse
Nick Miller 39 (2nd inns)
Stifled any hope of St George trying for an
outright win
Darren Jayasekera 20, 19
A memorable one-handed catch along with
valuable runs
Orion Dowler 18
Added important runs in the 1st innings
Axel Cahlin 16
Combined with DM in a critical 58-run 1st
innings partnership
Andrew Coleman
Held important catches and prevented countless
runs
Matt Todd
Restricted runs + built pressure contributing to
the collapse
Dom Thomson
Provided more than runs + cover defence, got us
to the finals
You have to feel for St George as it's not a good way to lose a final - I'm sure we have all
experienced this type of collapse at some time in our cricket careers. Thankfully, we were
on the right side this time around. Saying that, all events leading up to that point allowed
this to happen; we overcame all challenges throughout the year, we had to take our
chances when they presented themselves, and to our credit we have now earned our place,
two-years running, on the Sherwood Cup. Congratulations!
To all 37 players below, you have all contributed to this great achievement. Grand Final
wins do not come every day so savour the moment, reflect on and learn from your
experiences and individual achievements, and hopefully come back with confidence and
the goal that has never been achieved before - that is, win the Sherwood three years
running.
I have no doubt that 5th Grade can achieve three in a row, most noticeably for the reason
that we play the game as it should be played. A statistic that I believe backs this up is our
team bowling strike rate of 39.66 - ranked 13th out of 20 teams. Whilst this may be an
47
area we need to work on, to have lost only 3 matches throughout the season this
demonstrates our patience, persistence and competitive spirit to work together to get the
job done. This is something that cannot be taught ... rather this is instilled in the club's
culture.
Taking over as captain was daunting and certainly not an easy task. However, the learning
and rewards of leading the team and club to victory is something very special - so thank
you all for your support! With the possibility of 5th Grade captaincy open next year as I
take time off for family, work and study, I'd encourage you all to consider the part - it's
worth the experience alone.

work and support. We would not enjoy the game as we know it without your

SIXTH GRADE (COLTS) REPORT
David Leiboff
Despite having a vastly different side to that of the previous two seasons, the Colts started
off the 2012-13 season looking to bring home a third successive Metro Cup. Constant
changes throughout the season resulted in no fewer than 35 players being chosen for 6 th
Grade. In addition, for half the season the team was captained by Andy Coleman and half
by me. Andy was needed to keep in 5th Grade for the second half of the season and was
heavily involved in their successful retention of the Sherwood.
All in all it was another successful season for the Colts side which finished as Minor
Premiers with 9 wins (2 outrights), 1 draw, 3 losses and 82 competition points.
Unfortunately the “three-peat” was not to be as the Colts went down in the Semi-Final to
North Sydney. Despite this loss some valuable experience was gained by a really young
squad which will no doubt benefit the individuals and the Club going forward. Before we
look at some of the performances throughout the season, I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all the mums, dads and other supporters who not only came along to
cheer us on but were always willing to help out with various other activities including tea,
scoring, umpiring and covers – particularly during the Finals series.
The season really couldn’t have got off to a better start as UNSW were bowled out for 139
& 97 after Gordon had declared 7/243, giving us a convincing outright victory in Round
1. Everyone chipped in with wickets in the first innings and the runs were shared in our
only innings. Matt Selby’s 6/23 in the second dig was the standout performance in what
would be his only game for Colts. Round 2 continued on the same vein with another
convincing win, bowling out Randy Petes for 170 which the Stags chased down with the
loss of only one wicket. This game unearthed an exciting young Gordon prospect in Axel
Cahlin who finished 74no in what was a seriously impressive first innings for the Stags.
Axel had a busy season as he went on to play in the successful 5th Grade Grand Final, as
well as the 4th Grade and Green Shield sides and was also named in the NSW U15 Schools
team; definitely a name to look for in the future.
Round 3 ensured another 10 points for the Stags who, after finding themselves in huge
trouble at 4/32 (a situation we found ourselves in far too often), recovered to declare at
7/323, young Sam Mart leading the way with an impressive 147no when the team really
needed it. Sam unfortunately suffered a couple of injuries during the season and didn’t
manage too many other games but certainly showed us all what he was capable of during
a very powerful and commanding knock. He was well supported by Oz Dowler who
notched up 50no in his first game for the Stags. Mosman were skittled out for 98 & 64
with Dave Leiboff picking up 6/39 in the first innings and Oz leading the way in the
second innings with 3/19.
Round 4 saw the Stags recover from 6/17 to all out for 226 before bowling out Wests for
96. This was largely thanks to 62 from Jason Leiboff and an incredible first innings for
Gordon from Blaize Irving-Holiday, who bashed his way to 89. In Round 5 the Colts
suffered their first loss of the year, with a poor first innings display against North Sydney,
the only contribution of note being Andy Coleman’s 58 and Dave Leiboff 79no in the
second innings.
51
Rounds 6,7,8 and 9 all resulted in convincing wins for the Colts boys with the following
key performances - Taylor Carter-Sutton’s 3/22 vs. Fairfield, Jason Leiboff’s 5/9 against
Randwick, Ben Leighton’s 5/7 and Tim Van Zuylen’s 69 against Wests and Connor
Jackson’s 102no against Sydney Uni.
Round 10 saw the boys take on Blacktown out at Whalan and we snuck home in a tight
game with no real standout performance, other than the appearance of Michael Falk, who
managed his first (and, I believe only) bowl for the year, picking up 1/5 off 5 overs. Jason
Leiboff took over the captaincy reins for Round 11 and led from the front as the boys
managed 7/264 declared with Darren Jayasekera making 86 and Jason making 115.
Balmain was then dismissed for 117 with Deva and Oz picking up 3 wickets each.
In Round 12, after bowling out Penrith for 183, the Stags could only manage 135 in reply,
meaning we suffered our second loss of the season, going down to the side we played in
the Final last year. In Round 13, back out at Whalan, we were quite lucky as, after being
dismissed for 108 and seeing Blacktown race to 2/55 at stumps, the whole second day was
washed out and we walked away with a draw. Round 14 was won via a forfeit as
Randwick couldn’t field a side and we received 10 points as another side managed an
outright win that round.
Round 15 was the last before the finals series and we were up against a strong UNSW side
that was largely different from the one we defeated outright earlier in the season.
Dismissing them for 174 from the last ball of the 50th over we felt we had done a pretty
decent job with Taylor Carter-Sutton doing a great job again picking up 3/24 off his 10.
However, despite a mammoth effort from young Rob Barker, who hit a 6 off the last ball
of the penultimate over, finishing 51no, we fell an agonizing 2 runs short.
Finishing first in the ladder we were drawn against 6th place Balmain for the Qualifying
Final, which was played at Killara. We won the toss and sent Balmain in. All the bowlers
and fielders did a great job as we managed to roll them for 184. At 2/35, having lost both
openers, we were in need of a partnership and Connor Jackson and Kapil Chhatbar (who
had put his hand up to move a few places up the order) really helped steady the innings
and virtually guide us home. When Connor was dismissed attempting another maximum
on 83 we had already moved to 3/149. Kapil kept going and saw us lead on the first
innings before falling for 57. Then, to ensure no other result was possible, Michael
Roberts (a last minute call up and another Green Shield player to watch) and Richard
Armour added 130 runs. With Richard falling for 73 off 75 balls on the last ball before
lunch and Michael finishing 66 not out, the Colts boys were on 7/363 and the game was
called off and we marched on to the Semi Final to meet North Sydney at Tunks Park.
After losing the toss, North Sydney sent us in and we soon found ourselves in trouble at
4/60. Regularly losing wickets, we never really gained any momentum and found
ourselves all out for 178, the only real contributions coming from Tim Van Zuylen (52)
and Dave Leiboff (63). Early wickets were going to be key and Matt Page answered the
call picking up 3 quick ones, which saw North Sydney in big trouble at 4/23. Matt bowled
beautifully and fully deserved a 4th, which was put down by this correspondent and it
turned out to be truly punishing. From then on the game really didn’t go our way with a
couple more chances going down and plenty of balls falling between fielders. Two quick
wickets to Rob Barker early on the second morning kept us in with a sniff but needing 3
more wickets with only 20 runs to play with was always going to be difficult. They passed
our score 7 down and raced to a 50 run lead before 3 wickets for 3 runs saw the innings
52
end in a flash. At this point we were still in the game, only being 50 runs behind with 2
and half sessions still to be played on the final day. Unfortunately rather than trying to just
get through to lunch unscathed and just chipping away the 50 runs, we managed to go in
at 4/22 which was not a good position.
Wickets continued to fall after lunch and we were rolled for 100. If it wasn’t for a quickfire 45 from Jason Leiboff at the end and Tim Van Zuylen’s 31 at the top North Sydney
wouldn’t have been required to bat again. However we had managed a small lead of 46
and were determined to go out and give it our all. In fairness, the North Sydney opening
pair didn’t even give us a sniff in the second dig as they eased their way to 0/46 to walk
away with an outright win and move onto the Grand Final.
It was an unfortunate end to the season for the boys as we had dominated most sides.
However throughout the season we managed to recover from 4 down for virtually nothing
on numerous occasions. If we can improve on one thing next year it would be to bat in
partnerships and look to rebuild every time we lose a wicket. In saying that it was largely
a successful season and great for a number of the younger members to get their first taste
of senior and finals cricket. There were some excellent performances by a variety of
different people throughout the year, a number of which have been highlighted but most
importantly there was a great team spirit and morale throughout and I would like to think
everyone had a lot of fun and enjoyed the season.
Next season we will bounce back and look to go one better, bringing home the Metro Cup
once again!

Dan Smith
With the loss of only Steve Colley from the previous season, there was an air of
confidence going into the 2012/13 Poidevin-Gray campaign. On paper, we had a strong
side. However, the challenge would be to maintain our discipline and motivation
throughout the seven rounds. If we played to our ability and stuck to our simple game
plan, we were more than capable of knocking over any side in the competition.
Nevertheless, the PG’s campaign began quite poorly. While the team was missing the
services of the First graders in the first two rounds, it was disappointing to see the heads
drop so quickly against Wests and Hawkesbury. The T20 form of the game is certainly
something we struggle with, but whether we like it or not, it is here to stay. We need to
remember that momentum can shift quite easily in this form of the game. All it takes is a
couple of tight overs with the ball, or a few lucky boundaries with the bat, to potentially
change the outcome of the match. The important thing is to realize that this can only come
from within, and it is up to each individual to put up their hand and take responsibility by
either bowling on one side of the wicket or refusing to throw their wicket away.
Round Three saw the return of Smith, Heaney and Soper into the side. Making first use of
the ball, the Stags applied the pressure early against Sydney Uni and were rewarded with
early wickets. Despite a number of partnerships between the opposition senior players, the
bowlers eventually restricted the Students to 237 runs. The Stags lost early wickets, but
the middle order soon set about rebuilding the innings, capitalizing on any loose
deliveries. Max Newman played an important supporting role as he patiently ground out
45 runs while Chad Soper showed his all-round abilities, seeing the team home with a
crucial 19 not out.
In Round Four we played a competent Penrith outfit at Chatswood Oval. All the bowlers
toiled hard on a flat deck, eventually restricting Penrith to 249 runs. At 4 for 38, victory
looked unlikely for the Stags. Henry Carmichael then joined Kris Colley at the crease, and
together the two put on a record-breaking 169 runs for the fifth wicket. Henry finished
unbeaten on 121 runs from just 101 deliveries, while Kris was unlucky not to reach his
century, eventually being dismissed for 92 runs. This partnership was no doubt the
highlight of the season. To put it in perspective, the next highest individual score was
four.
Round Five saw the Stags confront an underrated Northern Districts outfit at Chatswood
Oval. Personally, I felt that this was our most clinical performance as a team. The bowlers
maintained a consistent line and length throughout the innings, and were well supported
by the fielders, eventually dismissing the opposition for 166 runs. This game also saw a
memorable innings from Corbin Edgar on debut. Opening the batting for the first time in
his career, Corbin displayed a level-headedness well beyond his years. He produced a
number of text-book cover drives and punished anything short on his way to a run-a-ball
century. He certainly has the ability to represent Gordon at the highest level, and
hopefully he will return a more complete player after his stint overseas.
We travelled to Raby to play against a talented Campbelltown-Camden side for Round
Six. Early on, the bowlers struggled to stick to the simple game plan, and Campbelltown
were soon on top. However, the introduction of Chad Soper and Charlie Stobo saw the
56
runs dry up, and the momentum shift back towards the Stags. Stobo bowled particularly
well, and was eventually rewarded with three wickets as the Ghosts finished at 5/268.
Once again, the loss of early wickets put us on the back foot early. At 5/104, most teams
would have simply folded under the pressure and the heat. However, the middle and lower
order showed great resolve in the trying conditions, with Newman, Soper and Stobo all
combining to take us to within 8 runs of victory when the last ball was bowled.
The last game saw the Stags come up against local rivals, North Sydney. Needing a win
and a couple of results to go our way to scrape into the finals, one would think that the
team would have left everything out on the field. Despite three early wickets, it was clear
that we didn’t turn up and did not deserve to win. Inconsistent bowling, dropped catches
and a general lack of any enthusiasm saw the Bears pile on 249 runs. Our run chase
started poorly, and we constantly lost wickets at the wrong time. There were some
positive signs, however, with both Spratt and Bromwich playing solid innings as well as a
30 run 10th wicket partnership between Nick Coleman and Scott Heaney to take the team
to a respectable total. Spratt, Bromwich and Colley will form the backbone of our batting
line up next season.
And so concludes another season of PG’s cricket. Despite the reservations many have
towards this competition, the opportunity for young players to test themselves against
quality First and Second Grade players is invaluable. Likewise, it is always enjoyable
getting the opportunity to play alongside the younger members of the club. Although the
side loses a number of players next season due to age restrictions, there is no doubt that
the returning players possess enough talent to ruffle a few opposition feathers and
hopefully progress into the finals next season. A couple of years ago, Harry Evans noted a
number of factors that undoubtedly contribute to success in this competition, which I will
now restate word for word:
1. Have a plan and stick to it – Bowl six deliveries to your field or work four singles
rather than playing a big shot. Any team can do this, but most don’t.
2. Play the ball, not the player – Don’t worry about what grade your competitor
plays. Don’t block a half volley because he plays 1st Grade and don’t try to bowl
an in-swinging yorker every ball because you’ve heard the batsman is a good
player.
3. Keep senior/higher grade players motivated – These guys set the example for the
other players. It’s more than likely that they will, firstly, win you matches and,
secondly, dictate the attitude within the side.
4. Want to win! – In PG cricket if you want to win more than the other side 95% of
the time you will. Chances are that half the other team wants to be at the beach and
it only takes a couple of quick wickets or four overs of fielding without a wicket to
remind them.
Lastly, I would just like to thank a few people for their help throughout the season. Thank
you to Paul Stephenson, Mark Carmichael, Tony Wilson and Geoff Hickman for their
work in organizing the Academy camp down in Narrabeen and ensuring the smooth
running of the season. Thanks also to Jamie Soper for taking on the onerous duty of
scorer, as well as Rob Carruthers for his tireless efforts as Manager. Finally, a big thank
you to Mark O’Neill for running the specialist team sessions, and also to Harry Evans for
his work as PG’s coach, Harry is the perfect role model for any young, aspiring cricketer.
57
Although he turned up some Sunday mornings looking as though his eyes were painted
on, he was a massive help to both myself and the rest of the team!

A.W. GREEN SHIELD
Jason Crofts – Manager
After being convincingly beaten in both trial games, a hint of nervous trepidation crept
into the camp prior to the season proper. However, as was expected, coach Bruce Edgar
provided the boys with not only technical aptitude but the confidence to raise the bar and
bring their “A” game to the first match of the season.
A home game against Western Suburbs resulted in Aaron Crofts (62*) & Nicky Miller
(50*) combining for a 95 run partnership to see the boys chase down their opponents’ 195.
Liam Windel commenced his excellent season with a knock of 41 and Nicky Miller was
best with the ball (2/30).
Another home game against Hawkesbury and confidence was high. A shaky start with the
bat saw us 3/28 until Liam (76) & Nicky (55) combined for a fourth wicket stand of 96. A
bit of a collapse followed but Rob Barker (32) offering some resistance, which resulted in
a final competitive total of 223. We had our opponents 3/22 but being unable to dismiss
their middle order would eventually cost us the game. Sean Campbell was our highlight
with the ball taking 2/28 from his 12 overs.
With Rd 3 deferred due to extreme heat we next travelled to Penrith. With a lot of
moisture in the pitch the only option was to bowl. The attack of Sean (1/18), Nicky (3/10),
Rob (2/10) and Mat Keevers (3/14) tore the opposition apart to dismiss them for 67 in the
23rd over. Maybe an early mark! Well, the pitch was still tough to bat on and our boys did
extremely well facing the bowling. We chased the score three wickets down, the
highlights being James Robertson (19*) and Andrew Sierakowksi (24*).
The next match defies belief and we are all still crying. After demolishing North Sydney
for 91 in 45 overs – chief destroyers being Nicky (2/17), Kapil Chhatbar (2/13) and Mr
Keevers (2/9) – we set about chasing the total on a beautiful “sunny” Sunday afternoon.
With solid contributions from Liam, Axel Cahlin & Tim Webber the combination of
Aaron & Nicky were setting for victory. A dark cloud brought a quick shower and the
umpires decided to call an early tea. We only needed 19 more runs and all expected we
would return to the field for an easy victory. Well, someone left the tap running and we
didn’t get back on the field. After frantic phone calls from Catts and Falky and Catts and
Falky again (and again) we realised we were three overs short of a victory under DL
method. I have been told I cannot swear in an Annual Report so will say no more!
The next game will probably go down in Greenies folklore. Happy to be sent into bat by
Campbelltown, we made a steady start with many contributions (Aaron, Andrew and
Nicky making 20’s) but no BIG score. Thankfully, Sean made an excellent contribution
of 38 which resulted in us scrambling to 171. With the opposition at 3/109 in the 38 th over
we weren’t feeling confident. However, after a sensational run out by Calvin Breytenbach
the game took a twist. Bruce waived his magic wand (and did his magic sheep dance!) and
Lachie Mactier (3/44) and Matt Keevers (4/19) put doubt into the opposition minds. In
Matt’s last three overs he took 3/1 and we managed to get the picture of him hitting the
stumps for the final wicket. All out for 145 in the 54th over! The team song was never
sung louder and Coach Edgar claimed it was one of his greatest victories as a coach.
60
The grudge match of the season against Northern Districts was next at Killara. The
homework and espionage had been conducted on the opposition and early wickets saw us
on top. ND’s no. 4 played and missed (we lost count how many times) but dug in, which
resulted in a 100 run 5th wicket partnership. Finishing with 228, the boys were satisfied
with their efforts. The pick of our bowlers was yet again Nicky with 3/35. A steady start
to the run chase followed but a small collapse saw us at 4/64 in the 23rd over. Nicky (52)
and Michael Roberts (25) put on 85 for the 5th wicket and the game was back in our
favour. Nicky hit the shot of the season when he propelled his Watson Shield teammate
for six over mid on! A few more wickets fell and Sean (30) and Rob (10) were steadying
the ship. At 7/198 in 52nd over we were looking good. However, Sean was dismissed with
a “one handed close your eyes catch” and Rob was given a doubtful LBW. The tail tried
hard but we fell agonisingly 8 runs short.
The rescheduled game against front runners Sydney Uni would require a victory to ensure
a finals spot. Sydney Uni won the toss and decided to bat. We had them 6/80 and all out
for 154. Skipper Lachie produced his best spell of the season taking 4/13 from 12 overs.
“Mr Reliable” Matt Keevers chimed in again with another 3 wickets. The run chase
started with a blast and our best opening stand (60 from 12 overs). Liam would finish with
another great score (77) and was well supported by Axel with 31. Aaron & Nicky
combined again to chase the final runs in the 46th over.
The boys finished in 7th spot on the ladder and but for the “washout”, would have finished
in the top four and had a home final. Anyway, off to Sutherland to play one of the
competition favourites in the Qualifying Final. A few niggling injuries creeping into the
team but they were still full of confidence. Being sent into bat and a run out in the first
over, it was never going to be our day. We finished with a sub-par score of 138, the major
contributors being Michael (34) & Nicky (28). We bowled extremely well from the
opening spell and luck was again not on our side after we dropped a catch early on. We
continued to apply pressure and another 30-40 runs on our score could have made the
game interesting (we had defended 171 previously). However, the opposition ran the score
down in the 44th over and our season was over.
The boys and parents all agree that playing Greenies with Gordon was an experience to
savour and hopefully has given the Gordon Club a good stock of young men to fill the
grades in the future. The boys sincerely appreciated the “support crew” (in fear of missing
someone I won’t name them all).
Biggest thank you goes to Bruce – a coach of enduring support for the boys who
genuinely took an interest in them individually and taught them how to play with purpose
and confidence. A relatively young and inexperienced side with only 2 previous Green
Shield players and 6 under age players, the boys really did lift to the challenge and play to
their potential.
I appreciate all the parents support (best afternoon tea in Greenies) and thoroughly
enjoyed the experience. Good luck to the boys returning next year

GORDON DISTRICT
JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB
_____________________________________________________ Steve Bibb-Convenor
On many levels, this was a very successful season for Gordon Juniors. Player numbers,
competition wins, standard of play and parental involvement were all up compared with
the previous season. The club also continued its excellent reputation for good
sportsmanship and a fair go for all.
The season headlines were:
 Team numbers were up from 14 in 2011/12 to 18 teams in 2012/13.
 Two teams won their competitions and a third team was joint-premiers.
 The introduction of extra skills sessions for players on Fridays.
 Successful Back to Cricket Day and Presentation Day
 Club successfully supporting national Pink Stumps Day.
 Three players rewarded for outstanding season with annual club awards.
 Increased corporate support for club.
Team Numbers
The 18 teams were made up of almost 240 players. The breakdown of age groups was:
U9s – 4 teams
U10s – 6 teams
U11s – 1 team
U12s – 2 teams
U13s – 2 teams
U14/15 – 1 team
U16/17 – 2 teams
The committee expects further growth in player numbers aiming for 20 teams in 2013/14.
Titles
When compared with player and team numbers, Gordon Juniors was the most successful
club in the NSJCA competition for the 2012/13 season. Both the U16/17 Gold and U13
Blue teams won their respective competitions. The U10 Reds were crowned joint premiers
after a dramatic tie in their final. The three teams were presented with their medals and
competition shield at the NSJCA’s end of season ceremony at North Sydney Leagues
Club.
As well, all our teams and players should be congratulated for doing very well this season.
Despite their position on the table, all teams played with commitment doe Gordon Juniors
while retaining the all-important sense of fun.
Parents
All the parents must also be recognised and praised for their work this season supporting
their children, the team and the club. Parents filled rolls as coach, manager, umpire, scorer
and more.
The parent managers for 2012/13 were:

Skills Sessions
Last season saw Gordon Juniors introduce extra skills sessions for players on a Friday
afternoon at Artarmon Reserve. These optional sessions were hugely popular with the
players and were conducted in age groups by Geoff Spotswood and his coaches. The U9s,
U10s, U11s/U12s and U13s received the extra coaching. Next season the club will expand
these skills sessions to all age groups.
The feedback from players and parents was very positive. The sessions not only improved
player skills and confidence but also created club harmony as players from different teams
and schools mixed together.
Back to Cricket Day and Presentation Day
The new format worked well again in 2012/13 with hundreds of players, siblings and
parents attending both events at Beauchamp Park in Chatswood. Kingsgrove Sports North
Shore must be thanked for supporting these days with cricket items for a club raffle.
Pink Stumps Day
Gordon Junior players, families and friends raised $948.15 for national Pink Stumps Day.
Despite all the wet weather disrupting games, our teams gave generously to the McGrath
Foundation for its work with breast cancer. A special mention must go to our in2Cricket
families who contributed $232.15 to that total.
Our club supported this year’s national Pink Stumps Day – one of 1,000 cricket groups
going into bat for the important event.
Thank you to all our players, parents, families and friends for donating.
Club Awards
65
Three outstanding Gordon players received the club’s top awards in 2012/13. Josh Rizk
was named Player of the Year and receives the coveted Mal Hall Award. Josh – who
played for the U14/15 Blue side – scored 248 runs at an average of 35.43. His highest
score was 80 not out. He was the ninth highest run scorer in the competition. With the
ball, Josh took 13 wickets at an average of 8.54. He was second leading wicket taker in
the competition. Josh was selected to represent the NSJCA – a fitting reward for his
season.
Will Hampson won the Clyde Coltman Award for special achievement. The award
recognises a player who contributed to the greater good of Gordon Juniors through
selfless deeds on the field. Will – who played for the U11 Reds – received the award for
his bravery and commitment to the club when helping U13 Blues and U16/17 Black
during games. Will was also selected to represent the NSJCA.
Joe Colgan won the Kingsgrove Sports Promising Cricketer Award - for a stellar
effort with the bat. Joe scored 231 runs and was out just once for an average of ... 231.
That made Joe – for played for U10 White – the leading run scorer in the U10 South
Saturday AM competition.
Corporate Support
The club would like to thank a number of organisations - both private and public – for
their support.
Kingsgrove Sports North Shore continued its backing of the club in 2012/13. Kingsgrove
provides players with an in-store discount and donates items for auction at Back to Cricket
and Presentation Day. This year, it also donated a $200 gift voucher for the club’s Most
Promising Cricketer.
The club was thrilled to be awarded a $1,000 grant from the Commonwealth Bank as part
of its support for grass roots cricket. The money will be used to improve the skills of all
Gordon Junior players.
The club would also like to thank Willoughby City Council for its continued support with
the hire of training facilities.
Channel 9 should also be thanked for supplying cricket DVDs to giveaway to players at
both Back to Cricket Day and Presentation Day.

In2Cricket
___________________________________________________Mark Ham, Co-ordinator
The 2012-13 was a fantastic success for the Gordon In2cricket program. For many this is
the first taste of organised cricket and the feedback from parents and participants was
inevitably positive in the extreme.
In terms of numbers - participants increased by a staggering 66% to reach 125 children
from ages 4 to 8. These were broken into twelve teams of players in the same age groups
and abilities.
Gordon In2cricket has a strong emphasis on keeping “players for life” - we want our
In2cricketers to become Gordon players and supporters throughout their cricketing lives.
Thus to enable a stronger sense of club and state ties, the team names reflected the current
and past players - both male and female. These team names were Blackwell, Clarke,
Cummins, Fields, Haddin, Nicholson, O'Keefe, Packman, Perry, Sthalekar, Warner,
Watson.
Gordon In2cricket took place on Saturday mornings at Beauchamp Oval from 7:45am to
9:15. Ten sessions were scheduled before Christmas and 8 in the New Year.
Unfortunately rain did cancel and interrupt a few sessions but it did not dampen the
enthusiasm of the kids when they finally got onto the field.
Of course, In2cricket could not run with the magnificent support of our coaches and
parents. I would like to acknowledge the excellent coaching skills of Kirsten Levy and
Felicity Trinh. Both girls were put forward by the Gordon Women's Club and I thank
Jessica Henry and her committee for supporting Kirsten and Felicity.
Kirsten Levy suggested and helped implement our first ever "Bring Your Sister Day".
This day encouraged the boys in the program to bring their sisters, friends, mums,
Aunties, cousins to come along and try out In2cricket. This day was also combined with
the pink stumps day and we raised over $230 for the McGrath Foundation. Our current
program had four girls enrolled and as a result of the success of the BYS day, we are
aiming to have twenty girls register next season! Furthermore, Cricket NSW is looking at
implementing the "Bring Your Sister" idea throughout the state.
I would also like to thank the 'senior' Gordon Juniors that assisted and also did a fantastic
job - Aiden Casey, Tim Herbert, Cecelia Gan and Luke Ham. Jim Ham was available
almost every week and deserves special mention for his commitment and coaching ability
from someone so young.
Our core parent coaches were nothing short of terrific. Without their skill and support we
could not run the program and for their help we are most grateful. From their efforts, I feel
assured that the future of the Junior Coaching ranks in Gordon looks very bright indeed.
In conclusion I acknowledge and thank the support of the GDCC committee. They placed
their trust in me and my methods and have enabled the Gordon In2cricket to flourish.
Steve Bibb from the Gordon Junior Club has been a fantastic supporter and a source of
69
inspiration and guidance. I thank him for all his hard work and encouragement to me
personally over the last few years.
On a further personal note, I will be unavailable to run the program due to a posting to
Hobart in 2014 for my work in the Royal Australian Navy. I have nominated Kirsten Levy
to fill the role and am confident she has all the skills to move Gordon's In2cricket program
to an even higher level of participation, learning and fun.
It has been an honour and privilege to be involved with the GDCC. I wish everyone
involved with the club every success for next season and the seasons that follow.
I trust that the chorus of "We play for Gordon and we play for fun!" is sung by many more
kids for many years.

Auditor’s Report to the Members of the
GORDON DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB INC.
To the Members,
Gordon District Cricket Club Inc.
Scope
I have audited the financial report of the Gordon District Cricket Club Inc. for the year ended 31 st
May 2013 as set out on pages 1 to 2. The Gordon District Cricket Club’s committee is
responsible for the financial report. I have conducted an independent audit of the financial report
to express an opinion on it to the members.
My audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards to provide
reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free of material misstatement. My procedures
included examination of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial
report, and the evaluation of accounting policies and significant accounting estimates. These
procedures were undertaken to form an opinion as to whether, in all material respects, the
financial report is presented fairly in accordance with Accounting Standards, other mandatory
professional reporting requirements in Australia, the Associations Incorporation Act (NSW) and
the association's constitution. This is done so I can present a view that is consistent with my
understanding of the Gordon District Cricket Club Inc. financial position, the results of its
operations and its cash flows.
Qualification
Receipts from donations and other fundraising activities are a significant source of revenue for the
Gordon Cricket Club Inc. The Gordon District Cricket Club Inc. has determined that it is
impractical to establish control over the collection of donations and other fundraising activity
revenue prior to entry in its financial records. Accordingly, as the evidence available to me about
revenue from these sources was limited, my audit procedures for donations and other fundraising
activity revenue had to be restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial records. Therefore I
am unable to express an opinion on whether donations and other fundraising activity revenue
obtained by the Gordon District Cricket Club Inc. are complete.
The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis.
Audit opinion
In my opinion (except for the effects on the financial report of such adjustments, if any, as might
have been required had the limitation on our audit procedures referred to in the qualification
paragraph not existed), the financial report presents fairly in accordance with applicable
Accounting Standards, other mandatory professional reporting requirements, the Associations
Incorporation Act (NSW) and the association's constitution the financial position of Gordon
District Cricket Club Inc. as at 31st May 2013, and the results of its operations and cash flows for
the year then ended.
