smokin’ hot Chelsea Carey and her
Alberta teammates rolled past Jennifer
Jones and Team Canada 7-5 in the Page
1-2 playoff game Friday evening to earn a spot
in the Sunday’s gold-medal final of the Scotties
Tournament of Hearts.
Canada will play in today’s semifinal against
the winner of the Page 3-4 game this afternoon
between Krista McCarville of Northern Ontario
and Kerri Einarson of Manitoba.
“That may be the most fun I’ve ever had curling,”
said Carey. “I felt really calm (before the game),
which is always the part that’s a little scary.”
Carey was shooting 98 per cent through eight
ends and her only real miss of the night came in
the ninth when she got only one on an attempted
double. She finished at 96 per cent
“Chelsea was a phenomenal player tonight,”
said third Amy Nixon, who was almost as hot at
94 per cent. “She really got us out of trouble in the
eighth end when we didn’t have our perfect end.”
Carey, Nixon, second Jocelyn Peterman and
lead Laine Peters were cruising with a 5-2 lead
until the eighth when Canada looked poised to
steal at least one, maybe two. But Carey executed
a raise, double takeout to score a pair for Alberta.
“That was a big one for sure,” said Carey. “Big
assist to Laine, she swept that the whole way,
right out of my hands. It was a good solid team
performance.”
Both teams showed in the first end that they
came to play. Nixon made two superb shots — a
raise double followed by a hit-and-stick through
a very narrow port. Carey and Jones exchanged
perfect freeze draws and, after Jones threw up a
guard, Carey came around cover and drew the
back of the button to get her deuce.
“The girls were great with sweeping everything
perfectly,” said Carey. “Like the draw for two in the
first end. They swept it perfectly; big assist for them.”
Carey made a delicate hit-and-roll behind cover
in two, forcing Jones to draw for one.
There wasn’t another opportunity for either
team until the fifth end when a pick on the first
stone of Canadian third Kaitlyn Lawes opened
the door for Alberta.
“I think we were going to be forcing them that
end and it turned into a deuce and they got to an
early lead because of it,” said Lawes. “It wasn’t
necessarily the game, but it was a big moment in it.”
Carey seized the opportunity, hitting a last-rock
angle raise takeout for two and a 4-1 margin at
the break.
Alberta rarely gave Jones and her team a chance
to get anything going in the final five ends. Each
time it appeared Canada might have a shot at a
multiple end, Nixon or Carey made the shots to
eliminate those threats.
Carey didn’t miss a shot until the ninth end
when her attempt at an easy double got only one
and left Jones an easy tap back for three. But it too
little too late for Canada.

WHAT A SHOT!
Einarson comes through big
to carry Manitoba into playoffs
By JOHN KOROBANIK

HeartChart Assistant Editor
erri Einarson is a Scotties Tournament of
Hearts rookie, playing in her first national
championship as a skip and facing a
pressure-packed, last-rock shot for a win that puts
her into the playoffs. Miss and her Manitoba team
drops into tiebreakers.
And what a shot it was — through a narrow
port, double takeout and stay to count three in the
10th end for a 7-6 win. It may be remembered as the
shot of the week.
To the 28-year-old Manitoba skip it was routine.
“It’s one of my shots that I always love to throw
so I knew I was going to make that one,” said
Einarson as she fought back post-game tears. “I told
my girls, just stick with me and I’ll make a couple.
They stuck with me, they made a few and I finished
it off.”
Finished it off indeed. As confident as she was
in her ability to make the shot, her teammates also
never had a doubt.
“She always makes it,” said third Selena Kaatz
who called the sweeping on the shot. “That’s her
signature shot so I knew she was going to make it.
If you give Kerri a pressure shot for the win, she’s
going to make it. Not a doubt in my mind.”
Lead Kristin MacCuish was equally confident
in her skip.
Worried? “Not at all,” she said. “Kerri always
comes through with those ones, so I wasn’t worried
at all.”
So what did the team learn from the difficult
game that saw Einarson roll out on a hit-and-stick
for two in the sixth that turned into a steal for New
Brunswick and a 5-2 lead.
“Just to stick with each other and keep plugging
away, keep making the shots and putting pressure
on them,” said MacCuish, adding her legs were like
jelly she was so excited over the win.
Excited doesn’t begin to describe how Einarson
felt.

“I just got goosebumps everywhere,” she gushed.
“I’m so proud of my team. They made a lot of wonderful
shots this week and made things quite easy for me.
“I’m just, going to cry. To achieve your goal that you
have always dreamed about. And I’m missing my kids,
too so it’s tough, but I’m just so happy.”
The Manitoba foursome – Liz Fyfe is the second –
play Krista McCarville of Northern Ontario in the Page

rista McCarville and her Northern Ontario
team will be seeking a little redemption this
afternoon when they play Kerri Einarson of
Manitoba in the Page 3-4 playoff game at 1:30 p.m.
Manitoba won the round-robin match-up 9-8
in a game that saw both skips throw costly misses,
especially early on when McCarville misses led to
back-to-back three-enders for Manitoba.
“We didn’t play our best against them so we’ll
have to come out a little more sharp,” McCarville
said Friday. “They’re a very good team. We know
we’ll have to play good against them.”
Back in the Scotties after a six-year absence
and now representing Northern Ontario,
McCarville, who won the Ontario title four
times, said she and her teammates view the
earlier Manitoba game as an aberration.
“The other games we played we were more
confident in ourselves and we handled the ice
better,” she said. “The game against them we
weren’t as sharp.”
McCarville said her Thunder Bay team
lacked some intensity in its 6-4 loss to Ontario
Friday, but that won’t happen today.
“We know coming out for the next game
we’re going to be fired up, we’re going to be
excited, there’s going to be intensity,” she
predicted. “I don’t think we’ll have to pump
each other up. It’ll naturally be there.”
Einarson, skip of a team that has only one
1-2, 3-4 games
1
2
player with previous Scotties experience —
lead Kristin MacCuish was an alternate for
Jennifer Jones in 2013 — knows she and her
teammates will have to be at their best to get to
the semifinal.
“They’re going to want to get us back so
we’re definitely going to have to come out
and play our best, just like we did in our earlier
game against them,” she said. “Come out and
play your best, give it your heart and everything
you have. Leave it all on the ice.”
And if she learned anything from her lastrock, come-from-behind 8-7 win over New
Brunswick in Friday that got her into the
playoffs, it’s that her East St. Paul team can’t
have another slow start.
“We have to start off strong and pick up
on our rocks a little sooner,” she explained. “I
found my rocks were a little straighter than the
other girls, and once we figured that out and
switched them up I started making shots.”
“We definitely have to start off stronger
than we did (Friday) and play similar to how
we played them before and it should be good,”
added MacCuish.
Northern Ontario third Kendra Lily said
the excitement and energy level should be just
about right at game time.
“This is pretty much what our whole season
has been leading up to, what we’ve been
playing for,” she said. “The end game was
to get to the playoffs at the Scotties so we’re
here and excited but at a pretty good level of
excitement.”

Calendar benefits young curlers
The 2016 edition of The
Spirit of Curling calendar is
now on sale, with a portion
of the proceeds going to the
Curling Canada Foundation —
the philanthropic program that
benefits young curlers and curling
centres across the country.
“We were thrilled with the
response last year, because the
money played a significant
role in continuing to build our
sport across Canada,” said
Rachael Wilson, Director, Fund
Development for Curling Canada.
“It’s a beautiful calendar, and it
reminds us of why we fell in love
with the Roaring Game, and why
it’s so important to get young
people involved.”
Printed on high-quality glossy
stock, the calendar displays
images of Canada’s top curling
athletes, as well as everyday
grassroots participants. Specific
themes include the unique
attraction of outdoor curling,
Canada’s success at the world
junior championships and even
Rocks & Rings, the elementary
school curling program.
The calendars are now
available for purchase at
thespiritofcurling.com at a cost of
$20 apiece plus taxes, shipping
and handling.
“The Spirit of Curling calendar
is also available to curling
centres as a fundraising tool,”
said Rick Warner, President of
project partner The Community
Fundraiser. “Curling centres get
a special price and get to keep a
portion of sales for their own use,
be it infrastructure costs, junior
curling programs or anything else
that requires funding.”
