five-and-a-half and was confirmed in November 1916.
Mother Theresa joined the Institute of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, known as the Sisters of Loreto, in Ireland at the age
of eighteen. She arrived in India as a novice in 1929 and
took her First Profession of Vows on May 1931 and her
Final Profession on May 24, 1937. She taught at St. Mary’s
School for girls and later became the school’s principal.
She had compassion for her students, community members and co-workers alike. She was a woman of profound
prayer and deep love. She was noted for her charity, unselfishness, hard work, organization and dedication.
She always wanted to do more for God and for the love of
Jesus. This led her to what she called “a call within a call,”
founding the Missionaries of Charity, a group of sisters
dedicated to the service of the poorest of the poor. On October 7, 1950, the new Missionaries of Charity was officially established in the Archdiocese of Calcutta, India. Today,
the congregation has over 4,000 members and are established in over 120 countries of the world. To better serve
the physical and spiritual needs of the poor, Mother Theresa founded other groups, such as the Missionaries of
Charity Brothers, Missionaries of Charity Fathers, Lay
Missionaries of Charity, and others. Her influence was felt
all over the world, and she received numerous awards,
including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She died on September 5, 1997.
The faith of Mother Theresa was nurtured by her family
even as a child. The family prayed together and were involved in church life. Her father died when she was eight,
forcing her mother to become a single parent supporting
In today’s reading (Hebrews 12:18-29), the author made
some comparisons between the old and the new covenants. In the old covenant, God was unapproachable. He
was so terrifying that the people were afraid to hear his
voice, and they could not look at him directly. They sent
Moses to go and bring God’s message to them, for they
said: “If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more,
we shall die” (Deut. 5:23-27). In the new covenant, however, God became man in Jesus Christ and walked and lived
amongst us to show us the face of God. In the new, God
lived among the people, and they could behold him face to
face. The coming of Christ led to a new relationship between God and the people.
Through Christ, we have easy access to God. We become
firstborn elect of the kingdom, the New Jerusalem, with
angels singing with joy. As firstborns, the inheritance and
the honor are ours. This honor, this inheritance, is not
what we merit but is freely given by Christ, the perfect
priest and the perfect sacrifice, who made it possible at the
cost of his blood. Comparing the blood that was shed by
Christ with that of Abel, the letter to the Hebrews recognized that Christ’s blood speaks more powerfully than that
of Abel. When Abel was slain, his blood called for vengeance (Gen. 4:10), but when Christ was slain, his blood
opened up the way of reconciliation. The sacrifice of Christ
made it possible for the human race to be friends with
God. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are invited to seek
reconciliation and not vengeance. We are to make God’s
presence felt by seeking out those who are in need of his
love and mercy.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
“Alms atone for sins” (Sirach 2:29). Alms are mercy translated into hands-on compassion. Jesus confirms Sirach’s wisdom:
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). “Conduct your affairs with humility” (Sirach 3:17).
Humility: we’re all alike and special, for we’re children of God. Jesus confirms that wisdom, too: “Do not recline at table in the
place of honor. Take the lowest place” (Luke 14:8, 10). In fact, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite friends, relatives, wealthy neighbors. Invite the poor, crippled, lame, blind,” physically or figuratively, society’s most vulnerable and marginalized, “who cannot repay you” (see 14:12–14). Jesus seems to be telling us to prepare for eternity with God’s chosen by becoming their friend here and now. Mercy is measured not by our delight in welcoming those we like most or who can repay us
best, but by sincerely embracing those we like least, who cannot repay us at all. Utter humility inspires pure mercy; pure mercy leads to eternal joy.

Looking for instrumentalists and a
volunteer director!
STMM Music Ministry is looking for additional
string players 11 years and older. The instrumentalist should have at least three years of instruction on his or her instrument. The string ensemble will start rehearsing on Sunday, September
11th, 2016 from 9:15 —10:15 A.M. in Room 101 of the school building.

Living in Gratitude !
Stewardship comes down to personal decisions about how
each of us lives and how we each will respond to God’s
gifts based on our experience, self-knowledge and the call
of God’s Grace.
Turn Cultural Values Upside Down – Stewardship is
NOT the Church asking for money “AGAIN”; it is what
we vowed to do when we were baptized – share all of
God’s gifts to enable God’s work to be done on Earth.
Life of a Christian Steward – Sharing financially is a
small part of the commitment. Christian Stewards receive so many gifts from God, so these are nurtured and
shared abundantly with everyone.
Choices – Christian stewards regard success and a high
standard of living as secondary to a life of generosity,
hospitality and personal & Godly relationships.
Volunteer string ensemble musician leader
We Give Thanks for God’s Blessings – W hen responding to God’s generosity, the stewardship question is not
“Should I do these things?” but rather,
“How much can I do?”
The Decisions are OURS to make!
The music ministry is also looking for a volunteer musician who can
lead the church string ensemble. Please contact Perci at the parish office

Our Parish Stewardship Committee plans and executes the Annual Renewal & Recruitment Event –
the “Festival of Ministries”.
The Little Dresses for Africa Project of the Helping Hands
Ministry has sent 45 dresses and 45 pairs of shorts to
the Anawin Home for children in Gwegwalado-Abuja, Nigeria. St Mary Magdalene parishioners’ donations of fabric, sewing notions, and monetary gifts, along with numerous talented sewers and workers, have made this gift
possible. Thank you for assisting us in this Corporal
Work of Mercy: “Clothe the naked.”

St. Mary Magdalene Prayer Quilt Ministry and Helping
Hands Ministry are collaborating to show our respect
and support for Law Enforcement. In response to the
horrific events of the past few months targeting our law
enforcement officers, many community members have
added their ideas to the growing ways to show support
of all men and women who serve and protect.
PQM & HH will honor and thank each member of the
Humble Police Department — patrol officers and all
staff members — with patriotic quilts for officers and
patriotic heart pillows for staff.
We will also send notes of gratitude and support to
each member. PQM & HH Ministries are asking for
your support in several ways. If you would like to write
a note of support, please stop by the PQM & HH Ministry booths at the Festival of Ministries on Saturday or
Sunday, Sept. 10th and Sept. 11th, to write your note.

Youth Ministry News
2016- 2017 Formation Classes /
CCE Registration: Our CCE classes will begin on Sunday, September
18th, Tuesday, September 20th , and
Wednesday, September 21st. For
those parents who missed our four
“early” and “regular” registrations events, we will
begin accepting “late registrations” on Sunday, October 2nd. Absences will accrue for students who
miss classes due to late registration. CCE tuition is
expected to be paid in full at the time of registration,
though no one will be turned away due to an inability to pay. All you need to do is talk to Fr. Felix
before October 2nd so he can review your request.
We need more Catechists for 2016 2017: There are only 10 catechist openings left for our CCE / Formation program this year. If you love being Catholic and want to share your faith with our
children and youth, then we need you! There are several elementary and middle school grades available,
and we offer three sessions during the week. Free catechist training is provided { see below }. God has already given you what you need. Now, it’s time to respond! Classes begin in three weeks… Please contact

Catechist Training Sessions: Our catechist trainings
begin this week on Sunday, August 28th (3:00pm);
Tuesday, August 30th (6:00pm); and Wednesday, August 31st (6:00pm) in the St. Paul Center, which sits at
the corner of Isaacks Road and Ferguson Street. These
trainings are for new and returning catechists and will
introduce you to the leader guides, CCE classroom
procedures, and other important stuff! You only need
to attend one (1)! They continue on Sunday, September 11th (3:00pm); Tuesday, September 13th (6:00pm);
and Wednesday, September 14th (6:00pm).
“Youth Night”: High school youth are invited to a
special “Ice Cream Sundae Social” this Sunday, August 28th from 6:30pm - 8:00pm in the Youth Room.
Our middle school youth will gather on Thursday,
September 1st from 6:00pm - 7:30pm for the “Hunger
Games Challenge.” Bring a friend and a snack!
Next week: Join us for a high school “Sports Night”
on Sunday, September 4th… Middle school “Twinkie
Football” on Thursday, September 8th.
2017 Confirmation Team: The first meeting for our
2017 Confirmation Team is coming up on Monday,
September 12th from 7:00pm - 9:00pm in St. Mary’s
Hall. The Confirmation Team is the group that plans
and implements our high school Confirmation program; it is open to confirmed high school youth and
adults. We meet once a month throughout the fall
semester to get ready for our spring Confirmation program and weekend retreat. Upcoming meetings are
October 3rd and November 7th. Hope to see you there!

High School Men and Ladies: Looking for solid

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I: Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29
Conduct your affairs with humility. Today's first reading gives us
the wisdom of Ben Sira, a second-century Jerusalem sage.
Because of the upper-class situation of the sage and his students, today’s lesson on humility is dramatic. The final verses
introduce a favorite subject of Ben Sira: the giving of alms.
Reading II: Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a
You have drawn near to the city of the living God. In today's reading from Hebrews, the image of the Israelites at Mount Sinai is
colored with details from the book of Exodus and other Old
Testament passages. The gloomy and fearful aspects of the old
covenant experience are emphasized in contrast to the picture
of Mount Zion. Christians do not have to live in fear of imitating the failures of certain figures in the history of salvation, for
they have the advantage of the person of Jesus, who sealed the
new covenant in His own blood.
Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7-14
Whoever exalts self shall be humbled and whoever humbles self will be
exalted. In today's Gospel, Luke presents a scene with Jesus in
the home of a Pharisee. Jesus addresses the guests in the
house with a parable that warns against self-exaltation. This
lesson comes soon after the disciples were reprimanded by
Jesus for vying for position. Jesus's words to the host point out
that the kingdom is for everyone, and our hospitality is to embrace all, especially those who are overlooked.
The answer is (c). The very act of receiving Communion is a visible sign that you believe exactly as the Catholic Church teaches
regarding all articles of faith, including the Real Presence. Most
Protestants don’t believe as Catholics believe. If you are “in communion” with the Catholic Church, then you may receive Communion in the Catholic Church.

We will meet for this eight-week series at 9:30 am on Thursday mornings and 7:00 pm in the

Why Forgive?
Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation
As we progress through the Year of Mercy, we understand that forgiveness is an important aspect of mercy.
Our parish is hosting a “Forgiveness Seminar” to be held on Saturday, September 17. In anticipation of that
event, here begins a series on forgiveness based on presentations I have given. I hope it will be a fitting
“warm-up!”
Why Forgive? For one’s own sake, for one’s own self-preservation.
Scientific studies show that lack of forgiveness takes a heavy physical toll on the person who does not forgive. If I feel that I cannot forgive for the sake of the other person, I need to forgive at least for my own sake
because if I do not, my lack of forgiveness will slowly kill me in a spiritual sense. This alone is reason enough
to choose to be a forgiving person. If I can at least start with forgiving for the sake of the good it does for me,
personally, that’s at least a start. To forgive is divine. It may also save your life.
For the sake of being forgiven. “ He who does not forgive
destroys the bridge over which he himself must cross.”

Because when we forgive, we become like unto God.
We take on the character of God when we forgive. We love
God only as much as we love our worst enemy.
Because we’re all in this together.
Take a good look at the people around you. These are the
people you will be spending all eternity with! We might as
well learn to love each other and get along now because
eternity lasts a very long time. “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’
yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not
love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom
he has not seen” (1 John 4:20).
I am not helpless. I do have choices.
I can choose how I will act:
• I can decide what my boundaries are. I
can distance myself from the behavior and
walk away.
• I can say “no.” I can seek help.
• I can stop facilitating the poor behavior.
• I can change my attitude. I cannot allow
others to destroy my peace.
• I can choose what is right, even when
others are choosing wrong.
• I can challenge myself, and others, to
grow.
Because I can forgive and still keep my self-respect.
Forgiveness does not mean I must allow destructive, negative behavior to continue.
Forgiveness does not mean I must remain in an abusive or dangerous situation.
Because healing is the only answer, and love is the only thing that can save us.
If we don’t forgive, we pronounce a death sentence to ourselves as well as to others. It’s not that we are helpless—we are very, very powerful. We have the POWER to CHANGE THE WORLD with LOVE!
Forgiving does NOT depend upon:
The other person admitting wrong. We cannot control another person’s behavior; we can only control ourselves. Forgiving is my choice to control my thoughts and behaviors. It is my decision to do something positive that changes me. We can choose to act in a loving manner, even when others choose otherwise. We can
allow them to control our feelings, rock our boat, destroy our peace and give us stomach ulcers, or we can
choose to rise above it.
The other person asking for forgiveness. Forgiveness is when we choose to give it, not because the other
person asks for it, earns it or deserves it. Like love, forgiveness is a free, unmerited gift.
The other person somehow offering to make up for the offense. Forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves, for our own self-preservation. Forgiveness is a gift we give others out of love for Christ. As a gift of
unconditional love, it is given with “no strings attached,” for this is the way God loves us.
The offending behavior no longer continuing. It may help to remember that the same human weakness and sinfulness that caused the pain yesterday may still be there tomorrow. It may take a lifetime of healing before a person can change, if they ever do. We can choose to bear with the person lovingly: “Love is patient; love is kind” (1 Corinthians 13:4). We can choose to distance ourselves from such behavior, which is
sometimes the only option, in some cases. Love of others does not require that we put up with abuse or allow
ourselves to remain in a dangerous situation.

Madre Teresa de Calcuta
Una de mis frases favoritas de la Madre
Teresa es, “Dios no me ha llamado a ser
exitosa; me ha llamado a ser fiel”. La fidelidad a Dios y Su misión de esta mujer santa la llevó a lograr grandeza y éxito. El próximo domingo, 4 de septiembre, la Iglesia
confirmará su santidad y fidelidad a medida que el Papa
Francisco la canonizará como santa en Roma. Es muy
apropiado que esta santa mujer de misericordia se canonizará durante el Año de la Misericordia. Nacida el 26 de
agosto del 1910 en Skopie, Albania a Nikola y Dranafile
Bojaxhiu, fue bautizada con el nombre de Gonxha Agnes.
Ella recibió su Primera Comunión a los cinco años y medio
y fue confirmada en noviembre del 1916. La Madre Teresa
entró al Instituto de la Santísima Virgen María, conocido
como las Hermanas de Loreto, en Irlanda a los dieciocho
(18) años. Llegó a India como una novata en 1929 y tomó

comparaciones entre la antigua y nueva alianza. En la antigua alianza, Dios era inaccesible. Él era tan espantoso
que la gente tenía miedo de escuchar su voz y no lo podían
ver directamente. Ellos enviaron a Moisés a que fuera y
llevara el mensaje de Dios a ellos, ya que ellos dijeron:
“Nosotros vamos a morir si nos quedamos escuchando la
voz de Yavé, nuestro Dios” (Deuteronomio 5:23-27). Sin
embargo, en la nueva alianza, Dios se hizo hombre en Jesucristo y caminó y vivió entre nosotros para enseñarnos
la cara de Dios. En la nueva alianza, Dios vivió entre la
gente y lo podían ver cara a cara. La venida de Cristo llevó
a una nueva relación entre Dios y el pueblo.
A través de Cristo tenemos acceso fácil a Dios. Nos convertimos en los primogénitos elegidos del reino, del Nuevo
Jerusalén, con ángeles cantando con alegría. Como primogénitos, la herencia y el honor son nuestros. Este honor,
esta herencia, no es lo que merecemos, sino que es dado
libremente por Cristo, el sacerdote y sacrificio perfecto,
aquel quien lo hizo posible con el precio de su sangre.
Comparando la sangre que fue derramada por Cristo con
la de Abel, la carta a los hebreos reconoció que la sangre
de Cristo habla más poderosamente que la de Abel. Cuando Abel fue asesinado, su sangre clamaba por venganza
(Génesis 4:10), pero cuando Cristo fue asesinado, su sangre abrió el camino de la reconciliación. El sacrificio de
Cristo hizo posible que la raza humana fuera amigos con
Dios. Como seguidores de Jesucristo, somos invitados a
buscar la reconciliación, no la venganza. Debemos hacer
sentir la presencia de Dios al buscar aquellos que necesitan su amor y misericordia.

“En tus asuntos procede con humildad” (Eclesiástico 3:17). Humildad: todos somos parecidos y únicos porque somos hijos de Dios. Jesús
nos da una explicación de lo que es tener humildad: “No te sientes en el lugar principal . . . ocupa el último lugar” (Lucas 14:8, 10). De
hecho, “cuando des una comida o una cena, no invites a tus amigos, ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus parientes, ni a los vecinos ricos; . . . Invita a los pobres, a los lisiados, a los cojos y a los ciegos” física o simbólicamente, los más vulnerables y marginados de la sociedad “porque
ellos no tienen con qué pagarte” (ver 14:12–14). Parece que Jesús está por decirnos que nos preparemos para la eternidad con los elegidos de Dios haciéndonos su amigo aquí y ahora. La misericordia no se mide por el placer de ser anfitriones de quienes mejor nos pueden devolver
el favor de una invitación, sino por aceptar sinceramente la compañía de aquellas personas que no nos caen bien, de quien no podrían devolvernos
el favor de una invitación. Una completa humildad inspira misericordia pura, y una misericordia pura nos guía a una alegría eterna.

Se requiere pago en su totalidad cuando se inscriban; sin embargo, nadie será rechazado si no pueden pagar. Simplemente hablen con el Padre Félix
