STAFF BOOK REVIEW
Staff Member: Heather Panella
Title: Public Services Librarian, Young Adult Services Librarian
Book: My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry
Author: Fredrik Backman
Summary: Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy, standing-on-thebalcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about
-Jesus-crazy. She is also Elsa’s best, and only, friend. At night
Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother’s stories, in the Land of
Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas where everybody
is different and nobody needs to be normal. When Elsa’s
grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters
apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsa’s greatest
adventure begins. Her grandmother’s letters lead her to an
apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and
totally ordinary old crones, but also to the truth about fairytales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other.
Review: This is crazy, goofy, wonderful, tug-at-your
heartstrings kind of book. Backman’s writing takes some getting used to, but
once you do, it’s easy to see just how beautifully the author has captured the
essence of a scared, lonely, grieving Harry Potter obsessed little girl who
thinks she’s completely “different” from everyone else in the world. Elsa’s
grandmother is an unforgettable, larger than life character whose fairytales
are both beautiful and heartbreaking. And like the main character, you’ll fall
in the with the Wurst! This is a read that draws you into the heart and soul of
the characters all the while wondering what is really going on beneath the
surface of the story. A gorgeously executed novel that hits all the right notes.
Recommendation: Those who love a heartwarming, complex story will
appreciate Backman’s tale. Anyone who read his previous novel, A Man
Called Ove and enjoyed it should also pick up this sophomore title, as it’s just
as worth the time and effort to read it. Book clubs will also find a lot to pick
apart in this story and will appreciate the nuanced characters and writing.
