The Humfrey File - Living Fortress History
Accompany the Royal Engineers Officer on his reconnaissance tour
John Humbly Humfrey was a British Army Royal Engineers
Officer. As a proven expert for military and fortification matters Humfrey succeeded in accessing the Prussian Koblenz
Fortress in the 1830s, managed to describe it in detail and
even depicting it in plans. An amazing achievement, as the
fortress had just been completed and was a restricted military
area at that time.

An exhibition of the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums Mannheim in
the Koblenz State Museum
Highlights of the exhibition are animals that were extinct thousands of years ago in form of genuine reconstructions created
exclusively for this exhibition as per latest scientific findings.
About 40 of these reconstructions and dermoplastic specimens will be on display at the Koblenz State Museum, among
them a mammoth family, a woolly rhino including offspring,
cave bears, steppe bison and a giant deer. In addition to the
animal world, typical questions on human life during the ice
age are at the heart of the exhibition. Where do I sleep tonight?
Do I have to starve as a vegetarian? Where do I go out at night?
Where do my children get an ice cream? These and many other
questions will be answered. Using expansive scenes and installations this fascinating era comes to life.
The exhibition is supported by a specially developed app that
provides additional information to visitors. Taking pictures is
expressly permitted for a change. In addition to the special
exhibition, the historical time gardens on the roofs of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and Haus der Archäologie with their handson area offer in-depth insight into the 3,000-year history of
this place.
