President’s Message
PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE
BY WALTER COSTELLO
O
n behalf of the club’s officers and board, our thoughts and prayers are with the many people and
companies in the industry who have suffered the effects of Hurricane Sandy.
This is a busy time of year for all of us. At the Underfashion Club we are gearing up for the 2013
Femmy Gala, including the FIT Student Design Contest. Congratulations and thanks to next year’s
honorees. Femmy co-chairs Barbara Lipton, Karen Bromley and Rosa Chamides have many details
already in place, including the return of guest host Carson Kressley. SAIG co-chairs Suzanne Beck
and Victor Vega along with FIT professor Alexandra Armillas, are working with the six talented
student finalists to be featured at the Gala and stunning results are guaranteed again.
On December 4th, the UFC held its annual Holiday Party at the National Arts Club. Thanks to Debby
Long Gedney and Roslyn Harte for putting together a wonderful evening, and to the attendees for
the many gifts brought for the children of The New York Foundling Home.
All committees are working on their 2013 budgets. The Nominating committee will be forming shortly in anticipation of elections
in 2013. New board member Ellen Lewis is busy reinvigorating the Social Media/Website committee.
BEST WISHES TO ALL OUR MEMBERS FOR HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A HAPPY, HEALTHY, PROFITABLE 2013.
Profile: In Memoriam: Don LaTorre
DONALD LATORRE, who served as the Underfashion Club president from 1995-1999,
was an outstanding President honored with a life membership by the board, and a
personal friend of many. He will be sorely missed.
On September 12, friends and family of Don gathered at “Legends” in New York City for
a special tribute. Several friends and UFC Board Members shared many funny stories and
talked about the good times shared with Don:
•
... I worked with Don for 10 Years. He was a good friend, a good co-worker, a great debater, and
. Don was an intelligent and quick minded guy who taught me lots and definitely kept me
•laughing.
His steadfast opinions about a number of topics were always backed up by his facts
knowledgeable Textile engineer ... I never met one individual who did not like Don as a person. He
was a good friend who will be missed ...

and figures … a consummate academic. During my many years working in our industry, some
of my fondest memories are those associated with Don ... I will miss talking with him.

the retail and wholesale sides, for over 30 years. Ellen has held positions
in both the corporate as well as the entrepreneurial environment of a
private business. She has extensive experience in all aspects of buying,

her 12 year tenure at Nap, New York and Bennett and Company, she
oversaw the product development for their Victoria’s Secret account
as well as the launch of several brands including Crabtree & Evelyn

become the fastest growing part of the business. In June 2010, Ken took

On December 4, the Underfashion Club hosted its
annual Holiday Party at The National Arts Club on
Gramercy Park South.
The evening featured a buffet dinner with scrumptious
desserts, dancing and a whimsical bra & bottoms design
contest that was judged by Lingerie Briefs’ Ellen Lewis
and Laurence Teinturier of Curvexpo. The Grand Prize,
a ticket to the 2013 Femmy Gala went to Joseph
Lara of Delta Galil. Second Prize went to Sophia
Gergatsoulis and Gabrielle Bizzoco of Wacoal
America, with each receiving a 1-year membership
in the Underfashion Club.
Mindful of the needs of the less fortunate, a
veritable mountain of clothing and toys collected at
the party was donated to the New York Foundling
children, and charitable donations were made by
the UFC to City Meals on Wheels, Friends of St.
Francis, and The New York Foundling.
It was a festive occasion with Club officers:
Walter Costello, Victor Vega and Karen Bromley; directors:
Suzanne Beck, Steve Chernoff, Debby Gedney, Ellen Lewis,
Michael Floru, Roslyn Harte, Gary Hughes, David Komar, Ken
Natori, Martha Olson, Victoria Vandagriff, Lance Whitaker and
Tina Wilson; and many industry pros all coming together to celebrate the season in style. (Photos continued on page 5 and 6.)
