Interior decoration starts with
a hardwood floor
The colour and surface patterns of a hardwood floor play
a crucial role in setting the tone for a space and creating
a personal style of decor. You can choose a fair and fresh,
sensuously light floor or a dark, elegant floor that exudes
prestige. A hardwood floor creates a comfortable atmosphere and provides an impressive setting for furniture
and other decor.
The colours, shapes and rhythms of interior decoration set
a strong counterpoint to the hues and surface patterns of a
hardwood floor. Colour tones closely resembling the floor’s
colour reinforce a comprehensive ambience and create a
harmonious space. Warm brown tones support corresponding colours in other decor solutions. Choices that contrast light
and dark colour tones serve to highlight details and generate
a controlled rhythm. This organic rhythm is further enforced
by the hardwood floor’s stronger grain structure and surface
pattern.
The 3-strip Walnut Country, with its strong grain patterns
and colours, is much more expressive than, for instance, the
subdued and elegant Ash Full Plank Select white oiled, with
its peaceful grain patterns. The natural colour of wood can be
toned and grain patterns accentuated by means of various
types of finishing.
Each floor colour tone sets its own mood.

Wood species create the identity
of a floor
Upofloor Hardwood Floors are manufactured from genuine
wood, with solid expertise. Several fine wood species have
been selected for our three Collections, each of which reflects
distinctively the living nature of wood. Different wood species have their own feel, indicating the history and growth
environment of the wood.
In addition to looks, it is advisable to take the intended
use of the space into account – it is best to select a hard
and fine-grained species of wood for spaces requiring a high
level of wear resistance. Since wood is a living material, the
appearance of a hardwood floor will change in time due to
the effects of light. On page 39, you can find images detailing
changes in the colour of various wood species.
Ash
Maple (Canadian)
The light-toned surface of ash is enlivened
by a distinctive grain pattern. Ash is put to
optimal use on large floors.
Canadian maple is a markedly harder species
of wood than the European variant. Its fair
reddish surface is silky and clear.
Beech
Birch
The serene, gentle lightness of birch creates a refreshing atmosphere. Knots add
a fun rhythm to the peaceful overall look.
Oak
American cherry
The silky surface and harmonious colour
tones of a beech floor provide a pleasant
backdrop for cosy decor. This species of
wood, most common in Central Europe,
can reach an age of 600 years.
Its warm natural colours and sturdy material
make oak a very popular choice for floors.
Timeless oak fits in beautifully with all styles
of interior decoration.
Sophisticated cherry provides an exciting,
vibrant feel. With time, the colour of cherry
tree darkens to a beautiful amber.
Merbau
Walnut
Merbau is a fabulous decor material with a
high level of wear resistance. Its nuanced
vibrancy provides an exciting starting point
for interior decoration.
Walnut has been a popular floor material
for hundreds of centuries. Its decorative
patterns and stout character will not go
unnoticed by anyone.
Jarrah
Jarrah floors exude a sense of dark orientalism and eminence. Jarrah is a hard,
wear-resistant wood species.
These species of wood may contract and expand more than average due to changes in air humidity, and we therefore do not
recommend installing them on top of floor heating systems.

The soul of hardwood floors is
found in the wood
The soul of Upofloor hardwood floors is born by turning high-quality timber into finished floors with uncompromising
expertise. The unique look and feel of a genuine hardwood floor originates in the production process as a result of the
combination of wood species, selections, strips and finishing. You will find a rich variety of hardwood floors in Upofloor’s
Ambient, Tempo and Forte Collections, which offer you genuine hardwood floors at their best.
The selection indicates the wood qualities
Our selections indicate the external quality gradings of various wood species. Due to natural patterning, the number of selections varies from one to four with regard to wood species.

More personality with finishing
Genuine wood always forms an individual part of interior
decoration, since every floor is matchless and unique. You
can modify the personality of a hardwood floor by means
of various types of finishing: lacquering, oiling, staining
and heat treatment all lend their own flavour to wood.
Staining
Staining makes wood shine
Staining provides wood with a new colour that emphasizes
its genuine nature. It does not obscure the personality of a
wood species, but rather gives it a chance to shine in a unique
manner. The following brown stain colours are available in the
Upofloor collection: Rich Honey, Classic Brown and Nutmeg.
The grey stains Silver and Granite and the white-matt lacquered Ash Nature and Oak Nature Marble Matt are a part of
the stained collection.

treated with a dark-coloured oil.
Natural EcoTop
Oiled products are treated ecologically with
EcoTop oil treatment. EcoTop treatment
entails using a vegetable oil that does not
include any preservatives, colouring agents
or solvents. The oil permeates deep into wood cells, giving the
boards an elegant surface of matte silk, which is resistant to
humidity and repels staining substances efficiently. Scratches
appearing on the EcoTop surface can be conveniently faded out
by using oil, without having to sand the surface. Oiling is the
most natural treatment for wood, preserving its real character
and colour tones.
Heat treatment contracts and darkens
Heat treatment is a method in which wood is heated to more
than + 200 °C. During this process, water and various extracts
are extracted from the wood. The pore and cell structure
contract and the natural movements of wood as a result of humidity decrease. Simultaneously, the wood colour turns darker,
adopting soft autumnal tones. Heat-treated assortments are
labelled with the Baroque name.

Surface structure creates
a rhythm
You can select floors with one strip, bevelled one strip, two
or three strips from the Upofloor collection. The number of
strips refers to the number of parallel parts of which the board
surface is constructed. One-strip boards are cut from a single
plank. Three-strip boards comprise several pieces that have
been composed into three rows.
Most of all, the number of strips has an effect on the liveliness and rhythm of a floor surface. The three-strip wooden
classic is at its best in areas where expressive floors are appropriate. Three-strip boards are available for all the species of
wood in Upofloor’s collection. For larger floors, it is advisable
to select one or two strip Full Plank boards, with their more
luxurious and integrated appearance.

Genuine wood body
Upofloor hardwood floor boards are manufactured entirely
from genuine wood. Wood is a living material, contracting
and expanding in accordance with the seasons and various
conditions. It is essential for the frame structure parts of the
boards and the wooden materials used in the frame to curtail
these natural movements. The cross-directionally glued
three-layer structure of Upofloor boards is made in a way
that effectively prevents the natural movements of wood
resulting from humidity.

Changing of floor colour
UV radiation from the sun affects hardwood floor colours.
Changes in colour represent a natural phenomenon occurring
on the wood surface. Radiation does not affect the varnish or
oil coating of boards.
The hues characteristic of Oak, Red oak, Birch, Beech,
Maple and Ash turn darker, while Walnut and heat-treated
Baroque boards become lighter. Jarrah, Merbau, Cherry and
Kempas assume a deeper, darker appearance due to the effects of light. Cherry wood may turn lighter over a surprisingly
rapid period when exposed to light, and in this case carpet
outlines may be seen on the floor surface. However, these
differences in colour even out with time.

Upofloor’s timber acquisitions are guided by principles of sustainable development. The wood used for
the intermediate layer and base veneer is primarily
sourced from PEFC certified forests, and the origin of
surface materials is controlled in accordance with a
CoC certificate granted by an external auditor.
The Brinell value is used for indicating differences in the
hardness of various wood species. As a rule it can be
stated that the higher the Brinell value, the more the
hardwood floor can withstand impacts and bumps as
well as general wear and tear.

Installing a hardwood floor is easy
Upofloor RealLOC mechanical locking system boards and
boards glued at the seams are easy to install. It must be
ensured that the subfloor is sufficiently level, the temperature
not too low and air humidity at an appropriate level before
a floor is installed. Wooden boards can be installed to form a
so-called floating floor or they can be glued to the subfloor.
Due to the challenging nature of installing boards by means
of gluing, we recommend using a professional for installation.
Installation is performed without difficulty, and full square
metres of completed floor are produced quickly. The floor is
then ready for use and does not require finishing, since the
boards have been finished at the factory.
Owing to careful quality control, all Upofloor hardwood
floor board parts are accurately measured and are tightfitting. Detailed installation instructions can be found in the
board packets. You can also read the instructions online at
www.upofloor.com. Read through the installation instructions carefully before starting installation. If the hardwood
floor boards are installed on top of a floor heating system,
preparations should be started about two weeks prior to floor
installation.
Worth considering in the
purchase of hardwood floors
Laying and care instructions
Floor heating
High-quality Upofloor hardwood floors are well-suited for
floors incorporating a floor heating system. The three-layer
structure and uniform quality of boards ensure that floor reactions to heating are kept to a minimum. Some types of wood
– such as beech and maple – are more responsive to variations in temperature and are thus not recommended for use
in areas incorporating floor-heating.
The maximum floor surface temperature is +27 °C. New
floors can be acclimatised to variations in floor temperature
by gradually increasing the temperature. The basic rule is that
temperature variation on the floor surface should not exceed
5 °C during a twenty-four hour period. Heat carries through
to the surface more efficiently in glued floors than in floating
ones.
Correct moisture level
Genuine hardwood floor is a living material and react accordingly to surrounding conditions. Wood expands and contracts
with changes in humidity. Genuine hardwood floors are best
36
suited for rooms with humidity levels between 40 and 60%
and temperatures between 18 and 24 °C.
The seasons, weather and humidity produced by habitation all affect the relative air humidity. If required, these
conditions can be altered by decreasing the humidity of the
air by means of ventilation and heating in the summer or,
alternatively, by increasing humidity by means of humidifiers
in the winter. Cooking, the drying of laundry and indoor plants
are some of the other things that increase air humidity. In the
event that the apartment stays empty for longer stretches of
time during the winter season, it must be humidified by, for
instance, leaving water in the sinks or other open containers.
Correct storage
The hardwood floor packages are transported and stored in
a horizontal position. Long-term storage requires a temperature of +15 to 24 °C and a relative air humidity of 40 to 60 %.
Hardwood floor packages should be stored apart from the
floor by propping them at the ends and in the middle with
wooden blocks.
Before installation
The subfloor
Hardwood floors are installed on top of a dry and level
surface, usually to form a so-called floating floor. They can
also be installed by gluing them to the subfloor. A floating
floor can be installed on top of concrete, building boards, old
wooden floors, plastic, linoleum or cork carpeting. Wall-towall textile carpets must be removed. The subfloor must be
level. Deviations exceeding 3 mm, measured with a 2000mm ruler, should be levelled by means of laying boards or
applying smoothing material. The firmness of the existing
plank floor should be ensured through attaching it by nailing.
Old floors should be cleaned to prevent odours and other
nuisances.
The relative moisture of a concrete floor without a moisture barrier block should not exceed 80%, or 85 % when
coupled with a Tuplex underlay. Moisture can be measured by
means of bore hole measurement. A DIY method of evaluating coverability consists of taping a piece of plastic sheet (approx. 1 m2) tightly to the floor for 4 to 5 days. If at the end of
this period water beads still form on the inner surface of the
sheet, or the concrete turns dark, the floor is too moist. The
drawback of this method, however, is its inaccuracy.
When installing on top of a concrete floor connected to
the ground, it may be necessary to install a durable 0.2 mm
polyethylene membrane between the boards and subfloor.
Clean the subfloor thoroughly before installing the underlay.
Insulate properly.
Starting installation
The installation temperature should be at least +18 °C, and
RH should be 40 to 60%. Board packages should be left
loosely placed on a dry and level surface in the installation
space for 48 hours before installation. You should only open
the packages as the work progresses. Make sure you have
the proper tools and sufficient lighting at your disposal. Do
not install hardwood floor boards under heavy furniture or
kitchen appliances.
After installation
Clean dust and rubbish from the floor using a vacuum cleaner
and damp wiper. If necessary, fill cracks and holes with putty.
Protect the finished floor with pieces of clean cardboard if
work continues on the premises. Do not tape the protective
pieces to the floor.

Correct installation direction
The boards are usually installed in parallel with the direction
of the room’s incoming daylight. However, if the subfloor is
wooden, the boards should be installed cross-directionally to
the existing floorboards.
Correct starting wall
The wall with the least openings should be selected as the
starting wall. The straightness of the wall should be checked
using a line cord or laser. The straightness and solidity of
the starting line are essential in terms of the success of the
installation. If necessary, the shape of the wall can be traced
on the starting board, and the board cut accordingly.
Expansion gaps and joints
To accommodate natural expansion, you should leave an
expansion gap of 7 to 10 millimetres between the floor and
wall or other element adjacent to the floor, such as a pipe or
pillar. The gap can be covered with a skirting board or covering strip. In rooms of over 6 metres, you should work on the
basis of 1.5 mm expansion per metre of floor.
An expansion joint is required when the floor size exceeds 12 m in width/depth and between multi-shaped and
separated spaces. In these cases, a gap of 10 to 15 mm is left
between the boards, then covered with a covering strip. In
the crosswise direction, the boards are cut, leaving a similar
gap between them.
Overlapping of boards
In order to achieve a sturdy floor that is resistant to torsion,
the distance of the cross-directional joints of adjacent fulllength boards should be no less than 50 cm. End joints should
turn in such a manner that they do not traverse the floor in
the same line.
37
Laying and care instructions
General installation instructions
Installation
Laying and care instructions
Upofloor RealLOC floor,
floating installation
RealLOC floor is easy to install. Their patented locking system
makes installation effortless and quick. The main idea behind
RealLOC system is the mechanical locking system that attaches and interlocks adjoining boards together tightly and
accurately without glue. The boards are convenient to install
and the floor is then instantly ready for use. The floor surface
is extremely smooth, with nearly invisible joints. Floor maintenance is effortless, and if the boards are damaged, it is easy to
replace them with new ones. RealLOC models are available for
all Upofloor hardwood floors.
Measure the width of the room and calculate how many
rows of boards you require.
1
You should always remove the
tongues from the first row of
boards to ensure the expansion
gap is sufficiently wide. Trace
the shape of the wall on the
tongue-side, and cut it on the
board. The tongue-side of the
first row should face the wall.
4
Start the next row with the leftover piece. The overlap for adjoining boards should be no less
than 50 cm. Install the first board
of the next row at a slight angle
to the board of the previous row
and lay it on the floor.
2
Install the next board with its
short side at an angle to the
previous board and lower the
board carefully on to the floor.
Proceed in this manner to the
end of the first row. Adjust the
distance of the wooden floor
in relation to the wall by using
wedges (7 to 10 mm).
5
Push an installation wedge under
the previously installed board to
raise it slightly and put the short
side of the next board into place at
a slight angle to the previous board.
Push the board forward and downwards towards the previous board
at the same time. Do the same
to the entire row of boards, after
which the front edges of the boards
will be propped apart from the floor
by the wedges.
3
Saw the last board of the row to
size, taking the expansion gap
(7 to 10 mm) into account, and
install the board in place. You
can achieve the correct length
by turning the short-side tongue
to face the wall and marking the
cut-off point shorter by 4 mm.
6
Remove the installation wedges
and tap the boards into place
with the hitting block, making
the side joints tight in the process. Note! Do not use a piece of
board as a tapping tool.
38
Installation tip
Narrow hallways: If the installation direction is
crosswise to, e.g., a narrow hallway, you can prevent the boards from changing shape by cutting
the base veneer of all the boards at two or three
points. These cuts should be made diagonally at
a 45-degree angle by using a carpet knife, and
should not exceed the thickness of the veneer.
If the width of the last row is less than 40 mm, saw the first
row of boards to a narrower width. The boards are installed by
joining them together using the RealLOC system without glue.
Glue may be required for certain places, such as lead-throughs
under door frames. Make sure you have wooden wedges and
a sufficiently sturdy and durable hitting block for installation.
You can find instructions for the floating installation of glued boards on our website. Go to www.upofloor.com

protection between the wall
and bar. Install the tightening
wedges.
11
When fitting, e.g., the last board of
a row, installing boards underneath
radiators or stairs and with through
holes in doors, lead-throughs under door frames, etc., you should
cut away the locking edge from
the length required using a chisel
or other tool, and install the board
by sliding it horizontally. In these
cases you should apply glue to the
tongue-and-groove structure.
10a Cut the board to shape if
required, and slide it in to place.
Only apply glue to the joint after
the board is loosely in place.
10b Tighten the boards into place
using, e.g., a crowbar or tightening
bar. Use protection between the
wall and bar. Install the tightening
wedges.
Remove the wedges after installing the last row of boards. Install
the skirting boards and thresholds.
Do not install the skirtings too
tightly against the floor or fasten
the threshold through the wooden
floor, as this will restrict the natural
movement of the floor. If required,
finish the cracks, etc., with putty
suitable for the kind of wood in
question. Protect the finished floor
after installation.

Hardwood floors are easy to
maintain
Hardwood floors are held in high value because of their
genuine character. A real product of nature, wood is
resistant to wear and lasts a long time when maintained
properly. Pre-emptive measures provide the best maintenance, but regular cleaning is still essential. You can find
detailed maintenance instructions on our website as well,
www.upofloor.com
Lacquered hardwood floor
Worn and scraped varnished floor can be treated with an
appropriate polishing agent (Bona Freshen Up). Note! Waxsaturated hardwood polishing agents prevent varnish from
attaching to the wood. Sand the surface until you reach clean
wood before maintenance varnishing. Unwaxed hardwood
floors can be maintenance varnished after light sanding using
a water-based hardwood varnish such as Bona Mega.
Protect against dirt and moisture
Laying and care instructions
Stop dirt at the front door. Place suitable mats on both sides
of the front door and beneath the coat rack to prevent grit
and water from getting into the rooms. Immediately remove
abrasive grit from the floor. Pieces of felt attached under the
legs of furniture will help protect your floor from scratching. Do not walk on the wooden floor with stiletto heels. Do
not use copious amounts of water when cleaning. If visible
moisture does not disappear from the floor within a few
dozen seconds, the amount of used water is definitely excessive. Immediately wipe away spilled water from the floor.
Remove stains when they are fresh, either with water or a
mild cleanser and dry the floor. Avoid scrubbing with hard
cleaning implements. Avoid scrubbing with abrasive cleaning
implements. For daily maintenance, it is enough to vacuum
the floor or wipe it with an almost dry floor wiper. The floor
surface will thereby dry immediately without visible drop
stains appearing.
Oiled hardwood floor
For cleaning, you should use a cleaning solution and a shortstringed mop. Osmo Color Wisch-Fix, a water-soluble oil-soap
solution, is one suitable cleanser. After mopping, the floor
should be dry. Wipe dry with a clean cloth, if necessary. Remove stains when they are fresh either with water or a mild
solution of Osmo Color Wisch-Fix and dry the floor. For floor
maintenance, you can use conditioners designed for oiled
surfaces (e.g. Tikkurila’s Nostalgia, Osmo Color Liquid Wax
Cleaner or Trip Trap / Woca Wood Cleaner) in accordance with
the manufacturer’s instructions. Remove loose dust and dirt
from the floor with a vacuum cleaner or floor wiper. Wipe the
floor one small area at a time with a cleaning cloth or floor
wiper moisturised with a conditioner.

on the floor and remove persistent stains with the conditioner.
Apply a thin layer of conditioner with a clean cloth to the
surface to be cleaned and scrub lightly until the dirt attaches to
the cloth. Let the conditioner dry for around 30 minutes and, if
required, wipe with a dry cloth. You can also use Osmo Color
conditioning and cleaning wax spray.
Oil surface reconditioning
Remove loose dust and dirt from the floor with a vacuum
cleaner or floor wiper. Clean the worn or damaged surface.
There is no need to sand the surface. Apply a thin layer of
floor oil (e.g. Osmo Color oil wax, Tikkurila’s Nostalgia or Trip
Trap Maintenance Paste) with a clean cloth to the area to
be reconditioned, scrub lightly with a cloth and let it dry. If
required, polish with a soft cloth. Remember to always follow
the manufacturer’s dose instructions! More severe damages:
we recommend sanding the boards until wood shows and
having the floor re-finished by a professional.
Re-coating of lacquered hardwood floor
Worn and scraped varnished floor can be treated with an
appropriate polishing agent (Bona Freshen Up). Note! Waxsaturated hardwood polishing agents prevent varnish from
attaching to the wood. Sand the surface until you reach clean
wood before maintenance varnishing. Unwaxed hardwood
floors can be maintenance varnished after light sanding using
a water-based hardwood varnish such as Bona Mega. For
more serious damage, the hardwood floor should be
sanded until the wood shows, and then relacquered.

Range of
hardwood floors
Wood species and selections Light-coloured hardwood floors
On these pages, you will find the range of hardwood
floors available in Upofloor’s Ambient, Tempo and Forte Collections. The colours of the sample pictures are not a 100 %
match with the actual floor colours for reasons pertaining to
printing technology. You can view samples that match actual
floors more precisely at your local retailer. With larger floors,
variations in colour or qualities related to a selection may appear that cannot be represented in small pictures or samples.
Please note that the colours of the samples displayed by a
retailer may have been altered due to the effects of UV radiation. Natural wood is a living material that gradually changes
colour over time. It is best to take these colour variations into
account at the early stages of interior decorating.
