Feather ® Autopsy, Trimming and Dissection Range
The Feather ® Autopsy, Trimming and Dissection range is internationally renowned for its sharpness and versatility. The
Autopsy Handle is autoclavable, easy to clean and highly chemically resistant. The handle is reusable with a variety of
interchangeable disposable stainless steel Autopsy Blades. There are also a number of reusable Trimming Handles that can
be used with the disposable Trimming Blades and these are available in right and left-handed versions. The F-80 Trimming
Handle can be used with Feather ® Disposable Microtome Blades, converting these ultra-sharp high quality blades to
trimming tools. The Dissecting Handle, made from a special hard resin, is also autoclavable and can hold two types of longlife ultra-sharp disposable Dissecting Blades.
The newly developed Feather ® Safety Trimming System combines the well respected Feather ® Trimming Blades, with a
new blade exchange system, which enables a simple, safe and fast change of blade. The blades are single packed with a
blade cover and therefore a direct contact with the Trimming Blade can be avoided. This protects the user from injury and
infections. The ergonomically designed plastic handle is heat resistent, autoclavable and easy to clean.
The #22 Feather ® brand scalpel blades are stainless steel, which provide a durable, precision edge. They are packaged
individually and are sterile to maximize their applications. Designed to be used with a #4 Stainless Steel contoured handle
which accentuates proper feel and dexterity.
These blades are also available packaged with disposable, plastic handles. This is an excellent choice where isolation and
disposal of the instrument is required to eliminate cross contamination.
Scalpel Blade #11 is available for microspecimen and dermopathology applications or where a smaller precision blade is
preferred.

Autopsy Saw and Accessories.
Clean-Cut Autopsy Saw and Extraction System and Accessories
The Clean Cut Autopsy Saw and Extractor system has a range of safety features designed specifically for autopsy work. The
unit includes a water proof, completely enclosed saw handpiece that is fully immersible, allowing it to be routinely scrubbed
and thoroughly disinfected after use. It also features a slim, extended nose for improved cutting in confined areas. The
oscillation speed can be varied from zero to maximum for optimum cutting efficiency. The lighter weight of this instrument
assists in minimizing user fatigue. A diverse range of replacement blades and accessories are available.
The Clean Cut Extractor features an overhead power unit which allows the drum section to be completely separated for
thorough washing and cleaning. Once the saw is turned off, the extractor will run for a further five seconds to purge the
system of debris. The Clean Cut Autopsy Saw and Extractor system, which includes a H.E.P.A. (High Efficiency Particulate
Absolute) filter, operates to the highest standards of pathogenic debris, such as bone dust containment and filtration. This
device is situated on castors to allow for easy mobility. A one year manufacturer's limited warranty is included.

Scalpel Blades, Handles, and Safety Blades.
Scalpels and Handles
Scalpels such as the Round Tip Scalpel Blade are specially designed to reduce the real dangers associated with puncture
wounds from sharp pointed blade ends. With the Round Tip Scalpel Blade, it is virtually impossible to inflict a puncture
wound. When used together with Cut Resistant or Safetyflex Gloves, staff will be significantly more protected when carrying
out cut-up or dissection procedures. For added security, the Scalpel Blade Remover enables scalpel blades to be taken off
the blade handles safely and securely.

Forceps.
All instruments are made from premium grade, hardened stainless steel and feature a protective coating to provide extra durability and
protection against rust and corrosion. Each instrument is satin-matt finished to reduce eye-fatiguing glare.
Ergonomic Forceps.
All of our ergonomic designs were manufactured with the operator in mind. Each style forcep is machine drilled to minimize weight
while still maintaining the balance and feel of the instrument. The anti-slip paddle handle assists in decreasing the tension required to
engage the gripping motion, as well as creating passivity for the specimen. These elements promote the reduction of operator fatigue
associated in repetitive motion applications such as grossing, embedding and microtomy techniques. Most of the ergonomic designs
will fit properly in the heated ports of the majority of embedding stations available on the market.
5½" (140 mm) Ergonomic
Available in smooth, serrated or needle tips. These (140 mm) versions are for those who prefer a shorter forcep. The
curved styles are well suited for tissue separation in the water bath as well as retrieving small specimens from the

Dissection Boards.
Dissection Board
The Dissection Board is constructed of a heavy duty, hard acrylic plastic material that makes it ideal for supporting soft
tissues that are subjected to the cutting and dissection process. The shiny white or blue surface provides an excellent
background contrast for visualizing specimens. They can easily be positioned on the board without slippage or moving
around on the surface. The cutting surface is silk screened vertically and horizontally with a centimeter ruler so that
specimens can easily be moved into position adjacent to the markings for measurement. These measurement markings
also make it ideal for gross photography, particularly for darker colored specimens. A drain/collecting trough is positioned
around the entire perimeter of the board. The board is supported by five rubber feet that are positioned on each of the four
corners and in the center to raise the board off the table or grossing station base.

Feather Blades.
Feather Disposable Microtome Blades
The Feather Autopsy, Trimming and Dissection range is internationally renowned for its sharpness and versatility. Made
from the finest grade stainless steel, each blade is heat treated and finely ground in three stages to produce an extremely
precise cutting edge. The blades are then specially coated to minimize friction and maximize blade longevity.
A variety of blades are available, each suited to a particular application or tissue type: Feather S35 – A low profile blade for
all routine sectioning. Feather R35 – Enables easier ribboning. Ideal for hard fibrous tissue. Feather N35 – Suitable for hard
tissue and for thin sectioning. Feather A35 – For routine sectioning of soft and hard tissue. Also suited for thinner sections.
Feather S22 – For cutting soft tissue and obtaining extremely thin sections. Ideal for skin, lymph node and renal biopsies.
Feather S35L – A longer 120 mm version of the Feather S35 to facilitate the cutting of larger blocks normally on a sledge or
sliding microtome. Feather S35LL – A longer 180 mm version of the Feather S35 to facilitate the cutting of very large blocks. A
sliding microtome is required to use this blade. Feather C35 – A disposable carbon steel blade ideally suited for sectioning in
a cryostat. Able to shear very thin frozen sections. Feather S35 High Profile – Twice the depth of the Feather S35 (requiring
a specific High Profile blade holder). Suitable for all routine sectioning.
With the exception of the C35 Blade, it is recommended to trim in all Feather microtome blades to improve blade longevity.
During trimming-in of the blade, care must be taken not to damage the surface coating, as this can cause scoring. Available
in packs of 50.

Base Molds.
Pop-Ups Aluminum Base Molds
Pop-Ups Aluminim Base Molds feature an innovative design for improving and speeding up tissue embedding. This all
aluminum base mold will cool paraffin blocks 40% faster than conventional molds. After repeated use, they can be recycled.
Each base mold is manufactured to create a flat surface which allows histotechs to quickly face into the tissue. The paraffin
blocks set up so quickly that you can hear the blocks "pop" out of the mold when they're ready. Available in quantities of 50,
280 or cases of 1,120.

Biopsy Pads & Wraps.
Mesh Biopsy Bags
Manufactured from solvent resistant nylon, these Mesh Biopsy Bags are ideal for use in processing small biopsies. They
provide excellent fluid exchange and maximum tissue safety. The fixative and specimen can be poured into the bag which
then filters the fixative and leaves the biopsies inside. The bag is then closed, placed inside a Biopsy Cassette and processed
as normal. After processing, the bag can be extracted and opened, allowing the specimen to be recovered and embedded
in paraffin wax.

Biopsy Pads
Biopsy Pads are made from open-celled foam, which allows fluids to transfer safely and thoroughly around tissue while
holding the specimen securely. To prevent floating and avoid artifacts, Biopsy Pads should be presaturated in fixative. The
thin design helps eliminate excess pressure from being applied to unfixed specimens, reducing the risk of tissue sticking to
the pads or fibers coming apart during embedding. Available in white or blue foam, circular or rectangular. The thinner pads
also allow for less fluid carry-over during processing.

C-E Brush®
The C-E Brush ® is specifically designed to gently collect an adequate amount of endocervical material for a more accurate
pap smear diagnosis. The bristle head is barrel shaped (as opposed to cone shaped). The longer bristles at the tip cause
less discomfort and bleeding to the patients, while allowing for a greater collection surface when harvesting cells from the
squamal columnar junction. This brush is designed to be inserted into the endocervical canal and rotated slowly.

Cervix Brush®
The Cervix Brush ® , from Rovers Medical Devices BV, provides a clear and accurate sample for the early detection of cervical
cancer. It is made of polythylene and has a total length of 7 ¾" (200 mm). The top portion uses a soft, flexible brush to obtain
cell samples, while the shape allows the top edges to follow the contours of the cervix. The longer middle bristles reach deep
into the endocervical canal while the shorter bristles touch both the ectocervical area (external os) and the transformation
zone (T-zone). Cells from the entire cervical area may be collected to produce good, representative samples. The detachable
head makes it ideal use for Liquid Based Cytology systems.

Cryo-Gel®
Cryo-Gel ® is a very viscous embedding medium for adhering frozen blocks to a pedestal for sectoning, frozen sections that
"stay put". It eliminates the messiness of "runny" media. The gel is packaged in a pump-dispenser bottle that can instantly
dispense the gel in any position, even when almost empty. The dispenser has a built-in "guillotine" that cleanly severs the gel
from the pump spout and prevents any "stringy" medium from pulling away when the bottle is removed.

Paraplast ®
Paraplast ® is recommended for general tissue embedding. It is composed of a refined mixture of highly purified paraffin
containing plastic polymers of regulated molecular weights. This provides improved tissue infiltration and superior quality
sections with minimal compression. Paraplast gives brittle, difficult-to-section tissue an innate elasticity, producing
excellent, wrinkle-free sections. Paraplast Plus is suggested for large tissue or tissue that may normally present infiltration
issues. Paraplast Plus contains a small percentage of dimethyl sulfphoxide (DMSO), allowing accelerated tissue penetration.
Paraplast Xtra is recommended for lower temperature infiltration which aids in the prevention of tissue distortion. It is
composed of a unique blend of low molecular weight polymers and highly purified paraffins for exceptional compression
resistance and ribbon continuity. Low viscosity permits complete infiltration of dense tissue.

Airchek® Badges
Airchek Badges provide an innovative, simple and effective system to monitor vapour levels. Standard badges are available
for formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and xylene. The Airchek badges provide continuous sampling for personal monitoring and
can give the measurements required under Government regulations. The badges are simply clipped on to the technician’s
clothing and a record is kept of name, location and time. One badge will provide continuous sampling over 8 hours and a
second badge can be used to supply information to analyse a 15-minute period during peak exposure. Both badges are then
sent to Leica Microsystems to be forwarded to an independent accredited laboratory for analysis. The analysis is performed
using HPLC giving a formaldehyde sensitivity of 0.004 p.p.m. ± 19% at 2.00 p.p.m Once the results are determined, the
laboratory receives a report specifying the exposure per individual technician for the appropriate chemical. It also indicates
the results in a format which can be readily compared to the Workplace Exposure Limits. Badges to monitor other chemicals
are also available.

D-Formalizer is a safe chemical treatment for neutralizing spent formalin. It leaves a clear solution, free of solids and
aldehyde odor, that can be disposed of without clogging the drains. Simply add one packet of D-Formalizer to a gallon of
used formalin (or 4% glutaraldehyde) and agitate gently. After 15 minutes, the product can be safely poured down the drain
in compliance with local ordinances. The resulting solution will have a pH between 6 and 9 and will be free of polymer
by-product. An aldehyde kit is also available to test for residual aldehyde and includes 100 tests per box. D-Formalizer is

Unlike general absorption products, which soak up spillage, F.C.G. deactivates chemicals and converts formaldehyde
into a solid, inert mass of urea-formaldehyde which can be disposed of as a non-hazardous waste. It is effective on 37%
formaldehyde and takes just 10-15 minutes to convert the liquid to a solid. Vapours will be neutralised in around 7-10 minutes.
F.C.G. comes in an easy-to-hold pack containing 680 gm - enough for even large spillages. One side of the container allows
F.C.G. to be poured, the other side allows it to be sprinkled less liberally for smaller incidents. One container of F.C.G. treats

X-Tract Filtration System & Bactiguard Pre-Filter
The X-Tract Filtration System is a portable unit for removing hazardous vapours from localised sources. It will remove both
formalin and xylene vapours while its Bactiguard Pre-Filter will eliminate microbes and viruses. Laboratory technicians are
routinely exposed to a variety of harmful chemical vapours in the workplace, for instance aldehydes such as formalin and
glutaraldehyde, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as xylene and ethanol. It is a legal requirement that employers
ensure exposure remains below Workplace Exposure Limits.
The X-Tract Filtration System uses state-of-the-art technology to remove potentially harmful vapours. Fitted with a
powerful, variable speed fan, the unit draws contaminated air through a sealed replaceable cartridge containing material
which attracts, reacts with and removes vapour molecules. Non-hazardous by-products are released via the rear vents.
The unit is compact and suitable even for a small work area and has a convenient carrying handle so it can be easily moved
and taken to a spill site to remove harmful fumes. In such cases, it is best to place the unit next to the source and close off
all other ventilation.
The X-Tract is also useful for removing fumes from air-drying slides following mounting and coverslipping and also for
removing fumes from specimen storage rooms and reception areas. The X-Tract Filtration System has been designed to
operate safely for 24-hours per day and can be left on continuously to remove background levels of harmful vapours from
the laboratory environment. The life-span of the vapour filtration cartridge varies depending on the concentration of the
vapours to which it is exposed and the volume of the room in which it is working, but typically it should be changed every
three months. An alarm will sound when the cartridge is due to be changed. The unit runs on 12 volts DC for increased staff
safety. The Bactiguard Fre-Filter contains two compounds that, in turn, weaken the cell walls and disrupt cellular activity of
bacteria, thereby eradicating them. Bactiguard has also been shown to be very successful at eradicating the synthetic test
virus MS2 coliphage ™, which has a molecular size of 23 nm, smaller than many disease causing viruses (eg the influenza
virus ranges from 150 to 200 nm). For maximum efficiency, the Bactiguard Pre-Filter should be changed every month.

The Nitrile Glove is made of 100% pure nitrile. It offers a higher level of resistance to nuisance nicks, cuts and abrasions and
offers superior splash protection against irritating chemicals when compared to natural latex or vinyl equivalents. These
gloves are just 4mls thin and provide excellent tactile sensitivity. After being worn for a short period of time, the glove
conforms to your hand size for greater comfort and reduced perspiration. This special polymer formulation of nitrile does not
allow adhesive label materials to stick to it. Thin nitrile exam gloves are three times more puncture resistant when tested
against comparative natural latex and vinyl gloves. They are 9 1⁄2” long, ambidextrous and have textured fingers for a better
grip. They come lightly powdered with cornstarch and now are also available powderless.

The Cardboard Storage File is designed to facilitate the storage of blocks and slides. This economical system is less expensive
than metal filing systems but still offers the convenience of drawers for easy retrieval of file contents. Strong and lightweight
due to the unique corrugated construction, the system comprises of five file boxes for either blocks or slides or a mixture of
both. These are supported by an outer shell, which stabilizes and enables the units to be stacked together. The single units are
10 cm x 29 cm. The block file can hold 500 blocked out cassettes (2,500 per system) while the slide file can hold 2,000 slides
(10,000 per system). Both offer the convenience of easy retrieval from partitioned drawers. By removing the central partition
of the drawer, the Cardboard Storage File can be used to store larger slides or 36 blocked out and trimmed Super Cassettes.
Available pre-assembled or flat-packed.

SelecTech.
SelecTech®
SelecTech ® is a hematoxylin and eosin staining system consisting of Hematoxylin 560 ®, Blue Buffer 8 ®, Define ®, Alcoholic
Eosin Y 515 ® or Eosin Trichrome 515 ®. SelecTech standardizes the reagents and stains used in the hematoxylin and eosin
staining procedure. The reagents and stains that make up this new system must pass vigorous analytical chemistry
standards and performance tests. The built-in quality assurance parameters assure consistent results. The reagents and
stains in SelecTech are designed to complement each other to produce a crisp, well delineated hematoxylin and eosin stain.
Hematoxylin 560 MX® produces darker nuclear staining than standard Hematoxylin 560 ® and is ideal for use in dermatology

EasyDip Slide Staining System.
™
The EasyDip ™ Slide Staining System has two components: a square staining jar and a 12 – position vertical slide rack. Jars can be
loosely joined to each other laterally, therefore making sure they are kept in the same order when moved around on the lab counter. As
an extra benefit, they are available in 5 different colors to help better identifying contents or applications.
EasyDip ™ Slide Staining Jar
The staining jar being made of resistant acetal plastic will not break like most glass jars do. It will resist most staining agents
including alcohol and xylene (but not phenol, iodine or ferric chloride ). The wide stable base offers greater stability while
the inside is recessed, allowing for a smaller reagent volume of only 80 ml. Easy to clean and no metals to corrode. Ideal for
special stains, frozen sections and special processes. Will resist temperatures between -170 °C and +121 °C. Autoclavable.
Dimensions: 64 x 76 x 92 mm H (2 1/2 x 3 x 3 5/8 in. H)

of staining fluids. Since they are placed vertically in the rack and not horizontally, their writing area will not be stained
by the fluid, allowing their removal without the use of forceps. The lid completely covers the EasyDip Slide Staining Jar
to minimize spill and evaporation. A handle is permanently attached to the rack for easy insertion and removal of slides
without your fingers touching the solution. Available in dark gray only. Will resist temperatures between -170 °C and +121 °C.

Acid Alcohol
Acid Alcohol is used in histology and cytology to remove excess stain and define nuclei following haematoxylin staining
in the H&E and PAP methods. In order to produce a good H&E stain with crisp nuclear detail, it is critical that certain
Haematoxylins are differentiated correctly, making Acid Alcohol a highly effective solution. Available with 1% or 0.5%

Decalcifiers.
Decalcifier System
Decalcifier I is a unique decalcifying solution that has the ability to fix and decalcify at the same time. Needle biopsies may
be completely fixed and decalcified in one hour or less. Small bone specimens and calcified arteries may be completely
fixed and decalcified in approximately 2-4 hours. It is recommend to use 20 times the volume of the specimen. Following
decalcification, the specimen is ready for processing without first having to wash. Tissues decalcified in this solution cut
with ease and routine H&E techniques produce excellent stained sections. Larger specimens, 3 to 5 millimeters thick, can
immediately be placed in Decalcifier I to fix and initiate decalcification overnight. The following morning, if the specimen is
not yet decalcified, transfer it directly to Decalcifier II to complete demineralization that same day. The Surgipath Decalcifier
I-II combination can save valuable time and more importantly, valuable specimens.

Solvents.
Clearene
Clearene is a selected blend of terpenes formulated specifically to replace xylene and toluene in histology and cytology
laboratory procedures. It is less oily than other solvent substitutes and therefore dries quickly and does not leave a
residue. Clearene penetrates tissue rapidly without overhardening and is safe to use with all open and closed system tissue
processors. It is miscible with alcohols, paraffins and mounting media. It contains an antioxidant to prevent stain fading.
Clearene is biodegradable and offers the desirable characteristics of a good solvent but not the harmful drawbacks of
aromatic hydrocarbons such as xylene and toluene-based products.
