Dear Our Lady School Families,
Hold on tight--we are whipping right through the month of November! Here's what's happening on our way to
Thanksgiving!
Progress Reports Hard to believe it's already progress report time! Gr. 1-8 progress reports will be
available for parents to view on Mon., Nov. 23 on Jupiter. Please contact classroom teachers if you have any
questions.
Congratulations, Deanery Science Fair Winners! Gr. 6-8 students recently competed in the Deanery
Science Fair at Providence High School. Please join me in giving a high five to the following students:
6th gr.– Cade Carver, third place in the Deanery. 7th gr.- Maddie Fisher, 3rd place; Landon Kruer 2nd place;
Tess Owsley first place in Deanery competition. 8thgrader, Maria Popson once again cleaned house by
placing first place in the New Albany Deanery Science Fair 2015! Lots of time, calculations, observation,
and meticulous planning went into these projects. You can beam with pride along with these talented
youth! Special thanks to Mrs. Sarah Carver, middle school Science teacher, who sets the bar high allowing
our students to rise to the challenge!
ISTEP Results Preliminary ISTEP results were released last Friday, Nov. 13. Parents should have accessed
their child's scores through the Parent Portal with your password. Re-scoring could only be requested by
parents and had to be done by Nov. 13. Our Asst. Principal, Mrs. Terry Horton, made personal phone calls
to parents of students who should have asked for re-scoring. Please see the attached ISTEP letter for more
details.
Christmas Program Mark your calendars and let your friends and relatives know Our Lady's Christmas
Program is on Thursday, Dec. 10. We will have two performances, at 1:00 and 6:30 PM. for your convenience. This is a required event for K-4 students. For the evening performance, students should report to the
Cafe by 6:00 PM. Mrs. Rodmaker has sent a note home regarding appropriate dress and details, so please
email [email protected] if you have any questions. Our Student Council will be selling hot chocolate for
$1 per cup following the evening performance. We're in the holiday spirit at Our Lady!

Inclement Weather
During times of inclement weather or other emergencies, Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Catholic School has its own closing/delay announcement. We may not follow NAFC or
Providence. Since students are delivered to the door and do not wait at bus stops, more
often than not, we will be in session. No news is good news--that means no email message
when our school day is running on a normal schedule. For a closing or delay:
1.) The www.olphna.org website will have the announcement prominently posted usually by 6:00 AM.
2.) All parents on the newsletter listserv will receive an email.
3.) The school phone machine will be updated to include the latest information and
4.) Our Lady will be listed on the scroll of school closings on WLKY Ch. 32 news only.
On a 2 Hr. Delayed Start- Morning Care is available for delayed openings from 7:15-9:15 AM. The fee is $5.00 per
child/per hour, and students should enter through the back door of school which goes directly down to the aftercare
area. Please note that Daycare is closed when school is closed.
Preschool/PreKindergarten classes will also attend on a 2-hour delayed start with the AM session from 9:4512:00 and PM session running from 12:30-2:45.
In the event that inclement weather should begin while school is in session, Our Lady will usually remain in session
unless conditions are severe enough to warrant an early dismissal. Parents wishing to pick up their children early due
to weather may do so with no penalty given for leaving early. Parents may not sign other children out early unless
their parents have contacted the school office and given permission for another person to transport their children.
If an early Our Lady dismissal is called, an announcement will be placed for Our Lady of Perpetual Help School on
the www.olphna.org website, and all parents on the newsletter listserv will be emailed. The announcement will state a
specific dismissal time. Parents should park in regular dismissal car lines, and students will be dismissed from the
gym. Remaining students will go to the office, and parents or emergency contacts will be
called. Designated staff members will remain at school until all children are picked up.
Parents should monitor cell phones, radio or TV for the latest updates on weather conditions,
school closings and delays. Of course, safety comes first and although school may be in session, follow your own best discretion for traveling from your neighborhood.
PTO NEWS
November teacher luncheon is Thursday, Nov. 19th. The 1st and 7th grade will be hosting. Help will be
needed to set-up, clean-up and to bring food, drink, etc.
PTO Christmas Bazaar, Meet Santa and Visit the Book Fair—Save the date — Saturday, December 5th.

table.

Annual Parish Thanksgiving Feast—Tuesday, November 24
This annual Parish dinner will take place in Wagner Hall immediately following the
5:30 PM Mass. Turkey, mashed potatoes and dressing will be provided. Bring yourself,
your loved ones and a dish to share. This is one event you won’t want to miss!

ISTEP RESULTS ARE AVAILABLE!

Dear Our Lady Parents,
The Indiana Department of Education has released the ISTEP results from last spring after a six month delay. Scores
from across the state are lower than previous years due to various testing issues and the switch to a common core
curriculum. The Department of Education will be adjusting scores to compensate for the issues that the test had in its
delivery and content. At this time, all of the 2015 ISTEP results are still considered preliminary; final adjusted scores
will be published in December.
While the ISTEP test is a tool to assess students’ academic knowledge, it is only one part of a complex process of
evaluating and assessing student academic progress. At Our Lady, we will be using comprehensive formative assessments, Star Reading and Star Math, that will give us more detailed sets of data to help students increase proficiency
and confidence. The parent reports that accompany Star Reading and Math are very informative, too. Most importantly,
we utilize daily assessments in the classroom designed by teachers who best know each child’s strengths and areas
needed for improvement. A child’s progress against him or herself showing individual growth is most important.
We take the ISTEP test very seriously by teaching all of the Indiana Academic Standards, yet we do so with the understanding that we are a Catholic school, teaching Catholic values, with a main purpose of increasing the level of faith in
God in every student. Our graduates continue to be prepared and excel at the high school and college level in their
academics, service to others and faith. The ISTEP test, like any one-time assessment, gives a snapshot of where the
student is at that time.
Looking forward, the Indiana Department of Education will have our students take a brand new version of ISTEP test
from another vendor starting in late February. As most of you know, the state gives a "Letter Grade" to each school in
Indiana based on ISTEP performance. The IDOE requires that all students ISTEP scores in the school, including
special needs students and language learner students scores, are included in this total, no matter the level that the
students are currently achieving. Because of this, the A-F letter grade the state assigns does not always reflect the true
academic progress the school may be achieving.
We have already begun to examine the Spring 2015 ISTEP results. With the other assessments, we will enhance
curriculum and instruction fostering continual growth. With your communication and help at home, we will put into place
remediation and enrichment as needed and seek tutoring options for students needing systematic practice and review.
Parents, we are so appreciative of your continued support and partnership at school and at home. Together, we stay
focused on our children’s growth in academics, service to others, and strong faith life. Feel free to contact us if you

Second Quarter Progress Reports
The Second Quarter Progress Reports for students in grades 1-8 will be
displayed in Jupiter on Monday, November 23. Grades and assignments in
grades 3-8 can always be viewed online at Jupiter. The progress reports
will show progress of students in grades 1-8 mid-way through the second
quarter and will include comments. If you are having trouble accessing
Jupiter, please contact Assistant Principal Terry Horton at

Chess Camp
(Part 2)
Chess camp went so WELL over fall break, we are offering another session over Christmas break!!
The camp will be held downstairs in aftercare on Dec. 21-23 from 9:00-11:00am. The fee will be $60
and is due no later than Wednesday Dec. 16th, cash and checks are accepted (please make checks out
to Bri Gilbert).
My good friend, Corbin Seavers, will be leading the chess camp as he is a master player and teacher.
I will be assisting, but Corbin has a love and passion for chess like nothing I have ever seen!!! Chess
boards, clocks, and workbooks will be provided during the camp. You did not have to attend the 1st
camp in order to attend the 2nd camp. No matter your child’s skill level, Corbin will be able to
challenge your child to be the best chess player they can be!
