From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
School First Communion: On Saturday April
27, 30 Second Graders were gathered in the
Church with their families and friends for the
First Communion. Of those, 25 children made the
First Communion and five received a blessing.
The children were all beautifully dressed---like
princes and princesses. As usual, it was a ceremony filled with feeling and faith. Jesus is the bread
of life. This is the key message. Even as we need
food for the body, Jesus is essential for life. He’s
the food for our mind, heart, and spirit. Without
him we’ll wither away. Sharing these thoughts, I
told the children that the Eucharist builds us up as
families and communities. We become the body
of Christ. Eucharist also impels us to help the
poor, hungry, and needy. Eucharist is the sacrament---and metaphor---for the bread of the world.
Because of Jesus giving us his own body, we can
share ourselves and all we have with those in
need. If we take the Eucharist seriously, the world
would become a better place. As we celebrate the
Eucharist, we absolutely have to work toward
eliminating hunger and poverty in the world. No
one should go without food. The First Communion is always a source of inspiration for the grown
-ups, who can remember vividly our own First
Communion ceremony and all the celebrations
built around it. Who knows? The First Communion of these children can be a source of inspiration and renewal for all of us!
Conversations with the School Faculty: It is
that time of year when the employment agreements are signed for our faculty. This provides a
wonderful opportunity for me to meet with the
teachers individually. I have been having excellent conversations with them. It’s good for me to
know what they feel about the school and parish
and seek any suggestions. They seem to have a
high level of satisfaction in their work. Their role
is vital in educating our children in faith, academics, and good values. Their collaboration with the
Principal and among themselves is to be commended. That we have great teachers is a blessing
to our parochial school.
Westborough Royale Mass: Every Second
Thursday of the month, I have being celebrating
Mass for the residents of the Westborough Royale
Retirement Home. About 25 of them attend this
Mass. They and their families seem to appreciate
this spiritual opportunity which gives them comfort and strength. In their retirement, they can be
missionaries by praying for their families and the
world.
Book Club: Last week in our Book Club meeting at
which 17 were present, we shared our thoughts on
the book Joy by Louis Evely. It’s a simple book
about what we can do in Easter season: to indulge in
joy. We have to come out of the Lenten season and
dance for joy that the Risen Christ can do all sorts of
fantastic things for us. Joy is the gift that God gives
and no one can take it away from us. The author
says that in Lent we make the “stations of the cross”
connected with the sufferings of Christ, but now in
Easter we could make the “stations of joy.” These
joyful stations are to do with how Jesus encountered
people like Mary Magdalene, Peter, Paul, the Emmaus disciples, and Thomas after his Resurrection.
What are our stations of the Resurrection, the stations of joy? Are we capable of joy? How do we
share joy with others in our daily lives?
Word of God: I have written the scripture reflection
in the Catholic San Francisco this weekend on this
Sunday’s readings. In the Acts of the Apostles we
read about the controversies the early Church had to
tackle: about letting Gentiles in, whether or not to
circumcise the new male converts, or whether Jewish dietary laws must be followed. The early Church
made decisions and moved forward. Isn’t it true that
we have controversies and crises today as well, but
with the help of the Holy Spirit, our Advocate, who
is promised by the Risen Christ, we ought to be able
to create new structures and symbols for our times,
resolving issues and reconciling opposing sides. We
can be creative and courageous in preaching the
good news and in creating signs and symbols that
can mediate God’s presence to the world.
A story to think about: A Quaker had this sign put
on a vacant piece of land next to his home:
"THIS LAND WILL BE GIVEN TO ANYONE
WHO IS TRULY SATISFIED."
A wealthy farmer who was riding by, stopped to
read the sign and said to himself, "Since our friend
the Quaker is so ready to part with this plot, I might
as well claim it before someone else does. I am a
rich man and have all I need, so I certainly qualify."
With that he went up to the door and explained what
he was there for. "And art thou truly satisfied?" the
Quaker asked.
"I am, indeed, for I have everything I need."
"Friend," said the Quaker, "if thou art satisfied, what
dost thou want the land for?"
