Time Warner Reports
second-Quarter 2010
Results
O
n August 4, 2010, Time
Warner Inc. reported financial results for its second
quarter ended June 30, 2010.
Commenting on the results,
Jeff bewkes,
CHAIRMAN
Time Warner’s Chairman and
and CEO,
Chief Executive Officer Jeff
Time Warner Inc.
Bewkes said: “Time Warner
delivered another quarter of strong financial
and operating performance. Our revenue
increased at its highest rate in two years,
driving 15% growth in Adjusted Operating
Income. Our investments in high-quality
content across the company continue to pay
off. Turner’s original programming strategy
contributed to the quarter’s strong advertising
growth and helped to generate pricing gains at
the high end of the recent 2010-2011 upfront.
HBO achieved impressive audience growth
for its returning shows, and it has more
original series in development than at any
time in its history. Last week, Warner Bros.
became the only studio in history whose films
surpassed $1 billion at the domestic box office
for ten straight years, while its TV production
business extended its streak as the #1 provider of broadcast network programming. In
addition, Time Inc. widened its lead in overall
domestic print advertising share through the
first six months of 2010. At the same time, we
strengthened our balance sheet and returned
to stockholders more than $1.5 billion in
dividends and share repurchases for the year
through June.”
More information about Time Warner, including its
financial results and business outlook, can be found on

announced in July the formation of a strategic digital
partnership between Turner Sports and Sports
Illustrated to create one of the world’s most exciting sports
destinations on the Web. The agreement aligns two of
Time Warner’s primary sports assets, capitalizing on each
company’s core strengths to create an online sports powerhouse with new revenue and marketing opportunities. The
combination marries the wealth of stories, perspectives and
photos from Sports Illustrated with Turner’s digital media
and sales expertise, resources, video sports rights and video
production. Sports Illustrated will create all editorial content
across each of its platforms: the flagship magazine, its
websites, paid mobile products and the recently launched
tablet version of the magazine. Under the new agreement,
Turner Sports will be responsible for business and technical
operations, ad sales, product management and marketing
for SI.com and Golf.com, which will be added to Turner’s
portfolio of 19 digital sports and entertainment sites. The
two organizations will collaborate on multiplatform sales
across their collective properties. Additionally, Turner and
Sports Illustrated will collaborate on the production of new
mobile products and applications.

Warner Bros.’ films Surpass $1 billion
at Both Domestic and Overseas
Box Office
W
arner Bros. announced in July that its films had
surpassed the $1 billion mark at the domestic box
office for the 10th consecutive year, an industry
first. This followed Warner Bros.’ announcement in May
that its films had surpassed $1 billion at the overseas
box office in less than five months in 2010, a record for
the studio. It also marked the 10th consecutive year that
Warner Bros.’ films have grossed more than $1 billion
overseas. Warner Bros. hit these marks on the strength
of the worldwide box-office performance of such films
as Sherlock Holmes ($517 million including $102 million
in 2009), Clash of the Titans ($492 million), Inception ($365
million from its July 16 opening through August 1), Sex
and the City 2 ($287 million) and Valentine’s Day ($213
million). The studio is gearing up for its slate of upcoming releases, including Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, Todd
Phillips’s Due Date and David Yates’s Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows: Part I (below).
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group
Acquires Turbine, Inc.
W
arner Bros. Home Entertainment Group announced in
April the acquisition of Turbine, Inc., one of the largest online gaming studios in North America, further
strengthening Warner Bros.’ position as one of the industry’s
fastest growing, full-scale games publishers. Turbine has
created some of the most popular and exciting gaming
worlds on the Internet, including Dungeons & Dragons Online:
Eberron Unlimited and The Lord of the Rings Online (below).
Previously, Warner Bros. held all The Lord of the Rings (LOTR)
games rights, with the exception of the literary massively
multiplayer online game rights. Now, all games rights for the

HBO Unveils Plans for Two New Original
Movies
H
BO announced during the second quarter of 2010 that
it is proceeding with the production of two new original
movies – Cinema Verite and Hemingway & Gellhorn.
Cinema Verite, directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert
Pulcini and starring Diane Lane, Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini, takes a behind-the-scenes look at the groundbreaking
documentary An American Family, which chronicled the lives
of the Louds in the early 1970s and catapulted the Santa
Barbara family to notoriety in the creation of a new television
genre – the reality TV series. Cinema Verite is scheduled to
debut on HBO in 2011. Hemingway & Gellhorn, directed by
Philip Kaufman and starring Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen,
follows the tumultuous romance and subsequent marriage

entertainment experiences that change perspectives, defy
expectations and challenge the status quo. The centerpiece
of the campaign was HBOimagine.com, an online universe

installation called The Cube (above), a unique storytelling
device that simultaneously offered four different perspectives on the same scene.
