The CARMABI Foundation was founded in 1955
as the Caribbean Marine Biological Institute. In
addition to conducting and supporting biological
research, the organization plays a major role in
advising government and other organizations on
the sustainable use of natural resources.
Aside from providing scientific visitors basic
waterfront lodging and laboratory facilities,
CARMABI also collaborates with foreign and
local academic partners to organize courses and
workshops.
Under its national parks program CARMABI also
manages several protected areas (such as the 2000
hectare Christoffelpark and 10 km long coastal
Shete Boka Park) and runs an educational program
for local schoolchildren.
CARMABI was initially supported through
Dutch development funding, and later by the
Island Government of Curaçao and the Central
Government of the Netherlands Antilles.
To fund its work today, CARMABI generates
increasingly more of its income from visitor fees,
scientific consultancy, park entrance fees and
nature related activities.

CARMABI
The CARMABI Foundation offers basic facilities
and support for research in tropical marine and
terrestrial environments on the Dutch Caribbean
island of Curaçao. There are daily direct flights from
Miami, Amsterdam and Caracas.
Reefs are accessible from shore and Curaçao lies
outside the Caribbean hurricane belt.

Lodging
A total of 26 people can stay at CARMABI simultaneously in single, double and multiple person rooms
with 3 shared kitchens and 6 shared bathrooms.
Laboratory
Wet lab with running sea water and several tanks:
5m x 10m. Dry lab, bench space 26.5 meters.
Presentation/ meeting room
The presentation room can also be used for workshops and courses. Room for 25-30 persons.

Diving and Fieldwork
Storage room for dive equipment. Equipment can
be rented at the diveshop right next to CARMABI.
One 21-ft Boston Whaler, one 15-ft Boston Whaler
and two 13-ft Boston Whalers.
An oceanic island in the crystal blue waters of the
southern Caribbean, Curaçao offers a variety of
highly accessible natural environments such as
steep fringing reefs. sea grass beds, mangroves,
deep pelagic waters, and a variety of terrestrial
semi-arid habitats and geological formations.
Research equipment and instruments
Includes microscopes, binoculars, scales, water
distiller, centrifuge, drying ovens and basic chemical
supplies.
Library and collections
Library with large number of scientific major journals. Historic scientific reference literature is available in the library. Xerox copier available.

CARMABI staff is glad to assist you in applying for
collecting and export permits, in forwarding field
samples and in helping you to meet any other
needs you might have.
