Seen from space, our planet appears to be incredibly rich in reserves of water, but in fact only 2.5% of
that is fresh water. While this precious resource flows freely
from the taps of homes in many countries as drinking water,
elsewhere people have to walk for miles to draw water
they can drink from the well. The German magazine "Der
Spiegel" recently drew attention to
the global water shortage in one of
its articles. In the southern countries
that are short of water, irrigated
agriculture uses up vast amounts of
it, siphoned from illegal wells. Spain
is the European country most affected by climate change. But there are
ways of using the earth's reserves of salt water. On the
Canary Islands there are now more than 300 desalination
plants producing nearly 700,000 cubic metres of drinking
water. One drawback of this method of obtaining drinking
water is its high cost and the unbelievably large amount of
energy the process consumes. In Málaga, for example, people have understood that the sensible use of desalination
plants can combat water shortages. Something also needs
to be done further inland. The desalinated water has to be
transported into the dry interior of the country via pipelines.
Today, Israel is a country with progressive ideas and advanced technology and a leader in water management. The
increasing impact of climate change, population growth and
agriculture that is located where it does not really belong
– all of these contribute to a decreasing availability of drinking water. Governments have to become involved. Every
year, 842,000 people die because they do not have access
to enough water for drinking, cooking and hygiene. Everybody can help out here and it is time to call on governments to
invest in the global water supply so that all the inhabitants
of this planet have enough water to live decently.

Vom Weltall betrachtet scheint es, als würde unser blauer Planet vor Wasserreserven nur so strotzen, doch lediglich 2,5 %
dieses Wassers sind süß. Rinnt das kostbare Nass in manchen Ländern in Trinkwasserqualität aus dem Wasserhahn,
müssen andernorts Menschen kilometerlange Märsche in
Kauf nehmen, um Wasser aus Brunnen zu schöpfen. Die deutsche Zeitschrift »Der Spiegel« hat kürzlich in einem Beitrag auf die weltweite Wasserknappheit aufmerksam
gemacht. In den wasserarmen südlichen Ländern frisst
z.B. die bewässerte Landwirtschaft Unmengen an Wasser, das aus illegalen Brunnen gezapft wird. Spanien
ist das europäische Land, das am meisten vom Klimawandel betroffen ist. Doch es gibt auch Methoden, die
salzigen Wasserreserven der Erde zu nutzen. Auf den
Kanarischen Inseln gibt es heute mehr als 300 Meerwasserentsalzungsanlagen, die fast 700.000 Kubikmeter Trinkwasser
produzieren. Ein Nachteil bei dieser Art von Wassergewinnung ist, dass sie sehr teuer ist und unglaublich viel Energie
verbraucht. Doch am Beispiel Málaga erkennt man, dass sinnvoll eingesetzte Entsalzungsanlagen die Wassernot bekämpfen können. Und auch im Inneren des Landes muss sich etwas
tun. Das entsalzte Wasser muss mittels Pipelines ins trockene
Innere des Landes transportiert werden. Heute gilt Israel mit
fortschrittlichen Ideen und Technologien als Klassenprimus
im Wassermanagement. Der fortschreitende Klimawandel,
das Bevölkerungswachstum und die Landwirtschaft an Orten,
wo sie nicht hingehört, tragen dazu bei, dass die Wasserknappheit immer weiter zunehmen wird. Der Umgang mit
dem kostbaren Nass muss Regierungssache werden. Jährlich
sterben 842.000 Menschen, weil ihnen sauberes Wasser für
Ernährung und Hygiene fehlt. Jeder kann im Kleinen etwas tun
und die Regierungen sind aufgefordert, in die weltweite Wasserversorgung zu investieren, damit jeder Mensch auf dieser
Welt genug Wasser hat, um in Würde zu leben.

Desde el espacio parece que nuestro planeta azul rebosa de
reservas de agua y, sin embargo, solo un 2,5% de ella es
dulce. Mientras que en algunos países este valioso líquido
fluye de los grifos proporcionando agua potable, en otros la
gente debe recorrer kilómetros para extraerla de los pozos.
Hace poco, la revista alemana "Der Spiegel" escribió un
artículo llamando la atención sobre la escasez de agua a
nivel mundial. En los países del sur donde escasea el agua,
la agricultura, por ejemplo, consume cantidades enormes de
agua que se extrae de pozos ilegales. España es el país de
Europa que más afectado está por el cambio climático. Sin
embargo, hay también métodos que permiten aprovechar
las reservas de agua salada de la Tierra. En las Islas Canarias
existen actualmente más de 300 plantas desalinizadoras
de agua marina que producen casi 700 000 metros cúbicos
de agua potable. La desventaja de esta clase de obtención
de agua es que es muy cara y consume muchísima energía.
Sin embargo, el ejemplo de Málaga demuestra cómo se
puede luchar contra la escasez de agua utilizando convenientemente las desalinizadoras. También es necesario hacer
algo en el interior del país, ya que el agua desalinizada debe
transportarse a través de largas tuberías hacia las tierras
secas del interior. Actualmente es Israel quien mejor gestiona el agua, gracias a ideas y tecnologías muy avanzadas. El
cambio climático que sigue avanzando, el crecimiento de la
población y la agricultura en lugares que no le corresponden, son factores que contribuyen a que la escasez de agua
siga aumentando. La gestión de este valioso líquido debe
ser asunto del Gobierno. Cada año mueren 842 000 seres
humanos porque les falta agua limpia para su alimento e
higiene. Todos podemos hacer algo y los Gobiernos tienen
la obligación de invertir en el suministro de agua a nivel
mundial, para que todas las personas en el mundo dispongan del agua suficiente que les permita vivir con dignidad.

THE SHOULDER
A troublesome joint and some possible solutions
The human shoulder joint is used in almost
all daily activities. This joint has a range of movement that is greater than any other, has an incredible
dynamic stability, and, in comparison to other large
joints, a lower rate of degenerative changes. But the
shoulder also sacrifices stability for mobility, and this
can often lead to problems.
Anatomically, the shoulder is a ball and socket
joint similar to the hip. The head of the humerus is
the ball and this fits into the socket known as the
glenoid, which is part of the shoulder blade. But this
socket only covers about 30% of the surface of the
humeral head. In most other joints this coverage is at
least 50%. This means that the shoulder joint needs
to be stabilized during movement and static positions
by muscles and other soft tissues (capsule, tendons).
There is a »roof« over the shoulder joint known as
the acromion. The acromion is not covered by any cartilage, whereas the top part of the humerus is. This
means that these two surfaces are not made to come
into contact with one another. Unfortunately, this is
also one part where a lot of shoulder problems arise.
The rotator cuff is a combination of muscles with
their tendons that has the job of keeping the humeral head centralized in the glenoid socket during all
movement, while maintaining a certain distance between the humeral head and the surface of the shoulder roof. Sometimes, when there is a problem with
the rotator cuff, they are not able to maintain this
distance and tissue between the humeral head and
acromion can get squeezed and therefore inflamed.
These special anatomical features partly explain why shoulder problems are seldom a cartilage
problem and more often a muscle or tendon injury, a
muscle imbalance, an instability, or even a disease.
In the hands of an experienced orthopaedic
consultant or physiotherapist, it is often possible to
determine through a detailed history and examination which structure is the cause of the pain and
why. Due to the many structures forming and stabilizing the shoulder joint, and due to the fact that
shoulder pain often involves neighbouring structures
including the arm or the neck, it is essential to be
able to differentiate between the different structures in order to determine the origin of the problem.
The technical revolution has also helped in diagnosing the problem with regard to the shoulder. Both
diagnostic ultrasound and MRI scans (magnetic resonance images) can confirm a diagnosis immediately,
thereby allowing for a treatment protocol that tackles the problem to begin straightaway.
Ultrasound imaging is the easiest and quickest
way to visualize soft tissue structures, and 70% of
the shoulder joint is made of soft tissue! Another
advantage with ultrasound is that the consultant is
able to move the body part during the ultrasound examination and is clearly able to see during any particular movement what structures are being used and
are under stress. Damage to the rotator cuff, which
would cause certain instability, can easily be detected with this method. Ultrasound may even be able
to detect very small deposits of unusual bone or calcium deposits that may be too small to be seen on x-ray.
Ultrasound, however, can only penetrate a few
centimetres, and it does not penetrate through
bone. To visualize deeper lying structures, MRI is
used. It gives very detailed pictures, but it is also an
expensive investigation.

Most shoulder problems can be treated with
conservative methods, meaning that surgical intervention is often not necessary. Shoulder stiffness
is one of the most common complaints seen by
orthopaedic consultants. Physiotherapy is often the
solution, including joint mobilization, soft tissue
massage and stretching, and specific muscle training. However, in order to allow physiotherapists
to do their job, it is often necessary to support the
treatment with the use of some medication, either
as tablets or as local injections, with the aim of
reducing inflammation and pain in order to allow
physiotherapy to begin.
If conservative treatment fails, surgery may be
necessary. The advances in the last ten years or so
are quite amazing! Keyhole surgery (arthroscopy), for
example, allows the surgeon to perform procedures
inside the shoulder joint, including tissue repair or
debridements, without the need to open the joint.
Instead of a long scar, only two (rarely three) little
incisions of about half an inch each are made in
keyhole surgery. Not only is this cosmetically more
appealing, it also means that the chance of joint
infection due to wound-penetrating bacteria is much
smaller than in open joint surgery. A further important advantage of keyhole surgery is that the patient,
under normal conditions, only needs to stay in hospital for a day, while open joint surgery often meant a
hospital stay of ten or more days.
One of the most frequent problems, particularly for people working in occupations or involved in
sport involving repetitive overhead movements of the
shoulder, is localized pain at the region where the
top of the humerus makes contact with the shoulder
roof when lifting the arm up (impingement syndrome). If conservative treatment fails to improve this

condition or if there is a definite anatomical problem, part of the shoulder roof (the inferior part of the
acromion) that hits the humerus can be removed to
allow free movement of the shoulder.
This can be done during keyhole surgery with
special instruments using electricity or heat. Following keyhole surgery, the shoulder can be mobilized soon afterwards and total recovery time is
much shorter than in open joint surgery. And even
delicate problems such as a rupture of the stabilizing
tendon ring around the shoulder joint (a rotator cuff
injury) can be dealt with by arthroscopic surgery.
Apart from major developments regarding keyhole surgery, there are also some new developments
regarding shoulder joint replacements (prostheses).
Due to a better understanding of the biomechanics
of the shoulder joint as well as new materials, the
prostheses now being used for shoulder replacements (necessary in the case of severe arthritis =
joint destruction due to wear and tear) last much
longer, are much more stable (decreased dislocation
rate) and present with a better fixation to the bone.
They also allow the patient to perform an almost
complete range of movement with the new shoulder!
The strong rotational, tangential and shifting forces
present during shoulder joint movement often resulted in early failure of the prosthesis with the need
of redoing the replacement. Today, new materials
have been found and better surgical techniques have
been developed to give a longer life span and a more
secure fixation of the prosthesis, increasing the life
span to an average of 12-15 years. This is obviously
one of the most important achievements in shoulder
surgery to date. Patients who were bound to retire
from their professional occupation or even sports
men (and women) who would have to retire, might
now be able to continue performing in their professions or leisure time activities.
Guaranteeing perfect results for any of these
surgical interventions requires more than a good
surgeon. Even a top shoulder surgeon at a reputable hospital will not be successful if an appropriate
rehabilitation programme is not in place. Rehabilitation after a shoulder operation is a very delicate job
and should always be left in the hands of an experienced physiotherapist.
And experience in shoulder joint physiotherapy does not just mean knowing how to do it; it also
means being able to prepare the patient for longterm rehabilitation aimed at strengthening the muscles supporting the shoulder and its movements.
So the success of treating a shoulder problem
is, as with most things, dependent on many factors.
The earlier patients seek the advice of an appropriate specialist (usually an orthopaedic consultant)
for their shoulder problem, the more likely a quick
and often permanent solution to the problem can be
found. Taking into account the new imaging techniques for soft tissue and joint examination that
are now available to find the reason for a persistent
shoulder problem, effective treatment can begin
immediately. And, if treatment is carried out by an
experienced team of specialists (orthopaedic consultant, physiotherapist, massage therapist, etc.),
patients should be able to return to their usual daily
activities and work.

Surgery talks about EAR-NOSETHROAT – the discipline of the senses
– Listen, Smell, Taste, Feel/Balance.
This sounds so harmless, unspectacular, or even
unproblematic; however, what kind of problems or
diseases could one already have? ENT is the medical practice of the senses – ear, nose and throat.
When there are problems related to these senses,
they can cause great discomfort, making diagnosis
and treatment absolutely necessary and urgent. All
diseases of the ear, nose and throat – including the
head and neck area – require a careful, meticulous
examination using very specific medical devices,
and the procedures are often in very tiny, non-open
and hardly accessible areas and cavities. Studies in
the specialization of ENT are conducted using specific technical equipment such as a microscope, endoscope, loupe-laryngoscope, sonography (ultrasound)
and several audiometric procedures. As a specialist
in the ENT field – and due to my additional qualifications in the field of plastic surgery in the head
and neck area, allergology, skull base surgery and
fractures in the facial area, I spent many years as
Medical Head Director and Chief Physician Representative at a hospital in Germany, then as a selfemployed affiliated MD working in my own private
practice. I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment
of the following diseases:
- Neck (throat, tonsils, adenoids, tongue,
base of the mouth, larynx, vocal cords)
- Nose (paranasal sinuses, adenoids, obstruction
of the airways and digestive tract, snoring)

Sinne führen zu Unwohlsein, welches eine Diagnose
und anschließende Behandlung erforderlich macht. Bei
allen Erkrankungen im Hals-Nasen-Ohren- und KopfHals-Gebiet ist eine sorgfältige, minutiöse Untersuchung
mit spezifischen medizinischen Geräten unabdingbar,
da es sich hier um winzige, nicht offen einsehbare
Bereiche und Höhlen handelt. Die Untersuchungen im
Hals-Nasen-Ohren-Gebiet werden mit speziellen technischen Geräten wie dem Mikroskop, Endoskop, Lupenlaryngoskop, Sonographie (Ultraschall) und diversen
audiometrischen Verfahren durchgeführt. Als Spezialistin/Fachärztin für Hals, Nasen, Ohren und durch meine
Zusatzqualifizierungen auf dem Gebiet der Plastischen
Chirurgie im Kopf-Hals-Gebiet, der Allergologie, Schädelbasischirurgie und der Frakturen des Gesichtsbereiches war ich langjährig leitende Oberärztin und Chefarztvertreterin in einer Klinik in Deutschland, danach
selbstständig als Belegärztin und in privater Praxis tätig.
Aufgrund dessen bin ich auf die Diagnostik und Therapie

TERRAVET VETERINARY CLINIC opened its doors
in September 2014. It is located in San Pedro de Alcántara
in the Polígono Industrial of San Pedro, at number 26 Calle
Chipre. Parking facilities can be found either directly on
the road or at less than 100 metres in a carpark. Marcus
Barth is the founder of the clinic. He is a German veterinarian who studied in Córdoba (Spain) and Hanover (Germany). After studies he got specialized in Exotic Animals. His
first work experience was on the coast and then he and
his wife decided to move to Germany. He worked at one
of the best veterinary hospitals in Germany where he specialized in Internal Medicine and Ultrasound diagnostics.
His last work experience in Germany was at a veterinary
clinic in Nuremberg where he also worked with exotic animals. After three years in Germany they decided to come
back and make Marcus' dream of owning his own veterinary clinic come true. TERRAVET offers a variety of services. One of their specialisations is Internal Medicine. The

How would you describe the taste of the Los Bandidos
which you have been running since 1986?
The taste of Los Bandidos is a mix of everything that I
like to eat myself if I go out. I have worked at every dish
so that it is as authentic as possible to my standards.
What does it mean to you being the owner and host of
this special restaurant?
As the owner of this long-running success story, I am
grateful to my customers who have always supported
my concept and are returning still, again and again (over
the years about 2.000.000 customers). This makes me
very proud and humble but it also shows that when your
passion is the number one reason why you choose your
path in life you will succeed if you work hard, and choose
your collaborators carefully.
How did your restaurant become one of the dining hotspots on the Costa del Sol?
To make a restaurant a lasting business it helps, of course,
to have "location, location, location" (position, position,
position) BUT there is a whole lot more to it. From the
people who greet the customers, to the initial impression
of the atmosphere, the cleanliness, the smell, the lightning and last but not least the most important ingredient
is that you keep your favourites on the menu (do not ever
take them away and try to become something that you
are not, just to be trendy or to copy what your neighbours
are doing) in my book that is a mistake.
Which is your personal favourite dish in the Los
Bandidos?
One of my personal favourites »Kurt's favorite« is a dish

würden Sie den typischen Geschmack beschreiben?
Der Geschmack von Los Bandidos ist eine Mischung aus
allem, was ich gerne essen würde, wenn ich ausgehe. Ich
habe bei jedem Gericht, das auf der Karte steht, mitgearbeitet, sodass die Speisen so authentisch wie möglich
meinen Ansprüchen entsprechen.
Was bedeutet es für Sie, Eigentümer und Gastgeber dieses
besonderen Restaurants zu sein?
Wir sind schon sehr lange erfolgreich und als Besitzer
danke ich vor allem meinen Kunden, die unser Konzept
immer unterstützt haben und immer gerne wieder zu uns
kommen. Über die ganzen Jahre haben wir mehr als zwei
Millionen Gäste gehabt! Das macht mich sehr stolz und es
zeigt, dass man, wenn man mit viel Leidenschaft, Engagement und tollen Mitarbeitern arbeitet, erfolgreich werden
kann.
Wie wurde Ihr Restaurant zu einem der kulinarischen Hotspots an der Costa del Sol?
Um ein Restaurant dauerhaft zu betreiben, zählt in erster
Linie die Lage. Neben der perfekten Lage bieten wir natürlich noch viel mehr. Vom ersten Eindruck, über die freundliche Begrüßung der Gäste, über die Sauberkeit bis hin zum
Geruch bieten wir unseren Gästen eine tolle Atmosphäre.
Und ganz wichtig ist, dass man sich auch geschmacklich
treu bleibt. Man darf die Speisekarte nicht immer wieder
ändern und modernisieren, nur weil das der Nachbar vielleicht macht. Wir setzen auf unsere bewährten Klassiker
und das kommt bei den Gästen an.
Welches ist Ihr Los-Bandidos-Lieblingsgericht ?

that was created 1986 when we first opened and it is
still one of the best sellers. It is quite simple, just a very
high quality filet with a »secret« pepper-sauce served
with a fresh tagliatelli gratin with Swiss cheese. It is
simplicity at its best.
Why have you named your restaurant »Los Bandidos«?
The name LOS BANDIDOS has its origin in a long, but
simple, story. My late husband was a member of a golfclub. I think they were 12 members in the beginning.
amongst the extraordinary & interesting people, some of
the members, such as Sean Connery, James Hunt, Kevin
Keegan, Bruce Forsyth etc, were also world famous.
They called themselves LOS BANDIDOS and they are
still playing around the world. They, with their friends,
were the first guests and it really got the ball rolling.
How would you describe head chef Juan Sepulveda and
his way of cooking?
My chef Juan Sepulveda, with his team of 11 in the
kitchen, has been with me for 13 years now and he is
the most wonderful and harmonious person you could
wish to meet in a kitchen. He also has a deep understanding and knowledge of the produce we use, and is
constantly on watch to see to that every plate tastes and
looks the same every night, perhaps the most important
»ingredient« on the menu.
There are a lot of pictures on the walls of your restaurant. Your most prominent guests were/are…
The pictures on the wall are celebrities and loved/important guests from all over the world. We have of course
entertained nearly all the celebrities that have visited Puerto Banús through the years. Popstars, businessmen, royalty, sportsmen etc. – Rod Stewart, Sean Connery, Penélope
Cruz, Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith, Deborah Kerr,
Björn Borg, David Bizbal, members of the royal families of
Kuwait, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Sweden and Britain. The
list is too long – you will be bored by the namedropping!
Why do you love to live and work in Marbella? What
about your Swedish roots?
I am Swedish but as a small child I grew up in France

Dieses Gericht steht seit 1986 auf unserer Speisekarte. Es
ist nicht besonders aufwendig, punktet jedoch durch die
hohe Qualität seiner Zutaten: Feinstes Filet wird mit einer
»geheimen« Pfeffersauce, frischen Tagliatelle und Schweizer Käse im Ofen überbacken. Das ist Einfachheit von ihrer

Warum haben Sie Ihr Restaurant eigentlich »Los Bandidos« genannt?
Der Name Los Bandidos hat seinen Ursprung in einer langen Geschichte. Mein verstorbener Mann war Mitglied
einer Golf-Gesellschaft, bestehend aus außergewöhnlichen und interessanten Menschen. Zu Beginn waren sie
nur zu zwölft. Weltberühmte Persönlichkeiten wie Sean
Connery, James Hunt, Kevin Keegan, Bruce Forsyth waren
darunter. Sie nannten sich Los Bandidos und sind heute
immer noch aktiv. Die Gruppe um meinen Mann waren
unsere ersten Gäste und brachten den Los-Bandidos-Stein
ins Rollen.
Wie würden Sie Küchenchef Juan Sepulveda und seine
Art zu kochen beschreiben?
Mein Küchenchef Juan Sepulveda steht nun schon seit 13
Jahren mit seinem elfköpfigen Team bei uns am Herd. Er
ist einer der nettesten und harmonischsten Menschen, die
ich in der Küche kenne. Sein tiefes Verständnis und Wissen über die Produkte und seine hohe Kochkunst sind einfach super. Er schafft es, dass jedes Gericht immer gleich
schmeckt und gleich aussieht. Beständigkeit ist wohl eine
der wichtigsten »Zutaten« auf unserer Speisekarte.

and then my family moved to Sweden where I was educated – I studied languages and later political science at
the University of Stockholm. My parents bought a house
in Marbella and so I spent my summers here and then in
1974 I moved here permanently. As there was nothing for
me to do that related to my studies, I decided to rent a
small restaurant in the port and try my passion for cooking.
I was the chef, the mâitre, the waitress etc. – I felt a bit
like Fawlty Towers. It was really hard but it was a huge
success and I progressed from there to where I am today.
What do you do in your free time?
Nowdays I have a highly trained team behind me. I
supervise, and I still run the restaurant with an iron
hand (I am a hopeless perfectionist) but I am relaxing more and more now, and I travel a lot, mainly to
hotels near to the restaurants that I wish to visit. I
think that food and wine are two of life’s great pleasures. When I am not travelling, being at home with
my family, friends and my beloved dogs is the nearest
to »Nirvana« I can come.

Sie haben schwedische Wurzeln und doch zog es Sie in
den sonnigen Süden. Warum lieben Sie das Leben und
Arbeiten in Marbella?
Ich bin Schwedin, aber als kleines Kind zog ich gemeinsam mit meiner Familie nach Frankreich, wo ich auch
aufwuchs. Dann zogen wir wieder zurück nach Schweden,
wo ich meine Ausbildung und später mein Sprachen- und
Politikstudium an der Universität Stockholm absolvierte. Meine Eltern kauften ein Haus in Marbella und so
verbrachte ich die Sommer immer
an der Costa del Sol, bis ich 1974
dauerhaft hierher zog. Da mir mein
Studium hier nichts nützte, beschloss
ich, ein kleines Restaurant im Hafen
zu mieten und meiner Leidenschafts
fürs Kochen nachzugehen. Ich war
Küchenchef, Inhaber, Oberkellner
und Gastgeber in einem. Das war
eine anstrengende Zeit, aber ich war
sehr erfolgreich und wäre ohne diese
Erfahrung heute nicht da, wo ich jetzt

Was machen Sie in Ihrer Freizeit?
Heute habe ich ein hochqualifiziertes Team hinter mir und
dennoch kann ich es nicht lassen, mit eiserner Hand das
Restaurant zu führen. Ich bin eben ein hoffnungsloser Perfektionist. Doch ich kann mich mehr und mehr entspannen.
Ich reise viel und buche dann meistens Hotels in der Nähe
der Restaurants, die ich gerne besuchen möchte. Für mich
sind gutes Essen und köstliche Weine immer noch eine
der größten Freuden im Leben. Wenn ich nicht auf Reisen bin, verbringe ich gerne viel Zeit zu Hause mit meiner
Familie, meinen Freunden und meinen geliebten Hunden.
Näher kann ich dem »Nirvana« nicht kommen.

Steuern und Abgaben beim Immobilienkauf in Andalusien
und auf den Balearen
A la hora de vender o comprar un
inmueble es España, surge obligadamente para las partes intervinientes la
pregunta sobre que impuestos y gastos
se originan con este negocio jurídico.
Kauft oder verkauft man seine
Immobilie in Spanien, stellt sich für die
beteiligten Parteien zwingend die Frage
nach den Steuern und Abgaben, die
dieses Rechtsgeschäft mit sich bringt.
En el supuesto de viviendas usadas, el comprador tributa
por el Impuesto sobre Transmisiones Patrimoniales, cuyo
tipo impositivo según reciente modificación en Andalucía asciende para un precio de compraventa de hasta
400.000 € a un 8%, de 400.000,01 € a 700.000 € a un
9% y para el resto hasta la totalidad del precio a un 10%.
En caso de plazas de garaje el impuesto asciende hasta
30.000 € a un 8%, de 30.000,01 € a 50.000 € a un 9%
y para el resto hasta la totalidad del precio a un 10%.
En las Baleares el tipo impositivo para casas y viviendas es el mismo, aunque para las plazas de garaje
hasta 30.000 € asciende a un 8% y para el resto hasta
la totalidad del precio a un 9%.
Los detalles del Impuesto sobre Transmisiones Patrimoniales son competencia de las Comunidades Autónomas. Para el caso que compre un vivienda de nueva
construcción, tributa en vez de por el Impuesto sobre
Transmisiones Patrimoniales, por el Impuesto sobre el
Valor Añadido, cuyo tipo impositivo asciende desde a
un 10% para viviendas y sus garajes y trasteros anejos.
Para otro tipo de inmuebles, como puede ser el caso de
locales de negocio o aquellos garajes y trasteros que
no se adquieran de forma simultanea con la vivienda, y

Immobilie zahlt man anstatt der Grunderwerbssteuer Mehrwertsteuer, die bei Wohnungen und
dazugehörigen Abstellräumen oder Garagenplätzen 10% beträgt. Bei anderen Immobilien wie

En el momento del otorgamiento de la Escritura Pública
de aquellas compraventas que tributan por el Impuesto
sobre el Valor Añadido se devenga también el Impuesto sobre Actos Jurídicos Documentados por importe del
1,5% del precio de compraventa en Andalucía y 1,2% en
las Islas Baleares. El plazo para la liquidación de estos
impuestos es el de un mes desde el otorgamiento del
la Escritura Pública de Compraventa. Tan solo aquellas
Escrituras que puedan acreditar la liquidación del correspondiente impuesto tendrán acceso a la inscripción en el
Registro de la Propiedad.
Los aranceles notariales suelen ser asumidos en la
práctica por el comprador, a pesar de que, según el artículo 1.455 del Código Civil, los gastos de otorgamiento

Die Notarkosten werden in der Praxis meist insgesamt vom Käufer übernommen, auch wenn nach
Art. 1455 Código Civil die Kosten geteilt werden

en el plazo de 3 meses desde el otorgamiento de la Escritura Pública de Compraventa la correspondiente Declaración mediante la cual, o bien podrá solicitar una devolución
(en el caso que el pago a cuenta haya sido superior al
importe a ingresar), o bien vendría obligado a ingresar la
diferencia entre el pago a cuenta y el importe real de la
cuota tributaria resultante.
A ello se añade para el vendedor en los supuestos de
ventas de terrenos de naturaleza urbana, aquél impuesto
conocido como “Plusvalía municipal” (Incremento sobre
el Valor de los Terrenos de Naturaleza Urbana). A través
de este impuesto se grava el incremento del valor experimentado por los terrenos de naturaleza urbana desde su
adquisición hasta su transmisión. Este impuesto encontrará su aplicación siempre y cuando haya transcurrido
más de un año desde la adquisición anterior. El importe
del impuesto es de regulación local, y puede variar de un
municipio a otro, por lo que es aconsejable informarse en
el Ayuntamiento correspondiente.

verpflichtet, den Differenzbetrag zwischen Akontozahlung und tatsächlichem Betrag der Steuer
abzuführen.
Dazu kommt für den Verkäufer bei Stadtgrundstücken noch die im Volksmund Plusvalía municipal
genannte Steuer (Impuesto sobre el incremento de
valor de los terrenos de naturaleza urbana). Dabei
wird der Wertzuwachs des Katasterwertes zwischen Erwerb und Verkauf der Immobilie besteuert. Diese wird dann fällig, wenn der Verkäufer
die Immobilie seit mindestens einem Jahr in seinem Eigentum hatte. Die Höhe der Steuer ist von
Gemeinde zu Gemeinde unterschiedlich und daher
bei der jeweiligen Gemeinde zu erfragen.

COUNT RUDI ON THE GARDENS
Count Rudi of Schönburg, fondly known as Condé
Rudi throughout Marbella, was born on 25 September 1932
in Wechselburg, Germany. After completing his studies at
the Hotel Management College in Lausanne, Switzerland,
he threw himself into the tourism and hospitality industry.
With great dedication, he and his cousin, Prince Alfonso of
Hohenlohe, established the Marbella Club Hotel, which,
more than 50 years later, is now one of the most prestigious
hotels in Marbella, as well as one of the Leading Hotels of
the World. Condé Rudi is more than happy to take you on a
little tour through the lush, colourful gardens of the
Marbella Club:

Hotelfachschule in Lausanne, Schweiz, widmete er sich
voll und ganz dem Tourismus und dem Gastgewerbe. Mit
großer Leidenschaft baute er zusammen mit seinem
Cousin Prinz Alfonso von Hohenlohe das Marbella Club
Hotel auf, das heute, mehr als 50 Jahre später, zu den
prestigeträchtigsten Hotels in Marbella sowie zu den
Leading Hotels of the World zählt. Gerne nimmt er Sie mit
auf einen kleinen Rundgang durch die bunte Gartenpracht
des Marbella Club:
Every year as summer returns I look forward to
my first candle-light dinner on the Marbella Club's famous
»The Grill« terrace. It is one of life's great pleasures to
dine here, enjoying the finest food and service among
the ancient olive trees. But it is not just the Mediterranean olive tree that I greet like an old friend. As I look
around at the different sub-tropical trees, the palm trees
(phoenix canariensis and phoenix dactylifera) and the yuccas (yucca elephantipes), I well remember Prince Alfonso
planting them over half a century ago, transforming an
olive grove into a splendid botanical garden brimming
with exotic flora, brought back from his travels around the
globe. Of course the most impressive trees, that everyone remarks on, are the pines (pinus penea) which soar

umschaue und alle diese verschiedenen subtropischen
Bäume betrachte – die Palmen (Phoenix canariensis und
Phoenix dactylifera) und Yuccas (Yucca elephantipes), erinnere ich mich gern daran, wie sie Prinz Alfonso vor über
einem halben Jahrhundert selbst gepflanzt hat. Er verwandelte damit einen Olivenhain in einen prächtigen botanischen Garten voller exotischer Pflanzen, die er von seinen

below. I well remember how they were transplanted,
striplings only two metres high, about 50 years ago from
where the Beach Club now is to their present home on
the Grill terrace. At that time, it was a question of either
simply cutting them down or trying to save them by transplanting them into the upper garden, and I am glad that
we chose to give them a chance of life.
I will never forget the excitement of seeing those
trees travelling up to the edge of the Grill terrace, where
I now admire them as they tower 20 metres above the
tables. In summer »The Grill« is the perfect mix of sophistication and simplicity: Vega Sicilia and cheese soufflé served to the sound of the frogs and the soft piano
music, the bouquet of the wine enhanced by the perfume of hundreds of different blossoms – in particular
the sweet, heady, Dama de Noche (sestrum nocturnum),
whose flowers open only at night, and the intoxicating
trumpet tree (datura), the jasmine (jasminum grandiflorum), the orange trees (citrus aurantium) and countless
others… turning the Marbella Club night air into an aphrodisiac cloud.
After dinner I like to walk through the romantically illuminated gardens lingering in the tranquil patio

die jeder sofort bemerkt und die jeden beeindrucken, erheben sich majestätisch in den Nachthimmel und formen mit
ihren Ästen eine wohltuende Überdachung, die effektvoll

erinnern, wie sie, gerade mal zwei Meter hoch, vor rund
50 Jahren vom heutigen Gelände des Beach Clubs zu
ihrem jetzigen Standort an der Terrasse des »The Grill«
umgepflanzt wurden. Es war damals die Frage, ob sie
abgeholzt werden sollten oder ob man versuchen sollte,
sie zu erhalten und in den oberen Teil des Gartens umzupflanzen. Ich bin sehr froh, dass wir uns dafür entschieden
haben, ihnen eine Chance auf Leben zu geben.
Ich werde nie die Aufregung vergessen, die mich
bei dem Anblick überkam, als diese Bäume an den
Rand der »Grill«-Terrasse transportiert wurden, wo ich
sie heute bewundere, wie sie in 20 Meter Höhe über
die Tische ragen. Im Sommer ist das »The Grill« die perfekte Mischung aus Raffinesse und Schlichtheit: Vega Sicilia und Käsesoufflé zum Konzert der Frösche und zu sanfter Klaviermusik, das Bukett des Weins, verbessert durch
den Duft Hunderter verschiedener Blumen, besonders
des lieblich-aufregenden Nachtjasmins (Cestrum nocturnum), dessen Blüten sich nur in der Nacht öffnen, und der
berauschenden Engelstrompete (Datura), des Jasmins

Principal above the restaurant – much quieter now than
it was when the Club first opened and all the guest rooms
were arranged around it. I pause for a minute or two by
the cooling fountain under a gazebo covered with thunbergia laurifolia, the hanging flowers of which resemble
dozens of stalactite white orchids. All around are enormous trumpet trees (datura), star-jasmins (trachelos permum, jasminoides), hibiscus (hibiscus rosa sinensis), and
agapantos growing among different kinds of palm trees
and old ficus benjamins – this whole part of the Club garden was designed and planted as an essay in green and
white flowers only.
My thoughts flew back many years to when, one
full moon night, I crossed this same romantic patio as a
young manager and ran into a very ancient hotel guest,
the fascinating Lady Middleton. Every evening she was
perfectly coiffed and dressed as if for a court ball. She
said to me: "Oh Condé Rudi, this night is too beautiful to
sleep through, would you mind walking with me through
the garden." I certainly didn't mind walking with her and
listened, fascinated, to the great lady's words, but I was
terrified in case anybody saw me promenading with this
(Jasminum grandiflorum), der Orangenbäume (Citrus aurantium) und zahlloser anderer, welche die nächtliche Luft im
Marbella Club in eine aphrodisierende Wolke tauchen.
Ich liebe es, nach dem Abendessen durch die romantisch beleuchteten Gärten zu schlendern und in dem ruhigen Innenhof über dem Restaurant zu bummeln, der jetzt
viel ruhiger als damals nach der Eröffnung des Clubs ist,
als sich rings herum alle Gästezimmer befanden. Ich bleibe für ein oder zwei Minuten an einem kühlenden Springbrunnen unter einem Pavillon stehen, der bedeckt ist mit
herabhängenden Thunbergia laurifolia, die wie Dutzende
von Stalaktiten aus weißen Orchideen aussehen. Überall
zwischen den verschiedenen Palmenarten und alten Birkenfeigen (Ficus benjamina) wachsen Engelstrompeten
(Datura), Sternjasmin (Trachelospermum jasminoides),
Hibiskus (Hibiscus rosa sinensis) und Sternlilien (Agapanthus) – dieser Teil des Clubgartens wurde komplett als ein
Essay ausschließlich grüner und weißer Blumen entworfen und gepflanzt.
Meine Gedanken schweifen viele Jahre zurück zu
einer Vollmondnacht, in der ich als junger Manager denselben Hof überquerte und mit einem alten Gast zusammenstieß, der faszinierenden Lady Middleton. Sie war
jeden Abend perfekt frisiert und wie für einen Hofball
gekleidet. Sie sagte zu mir: »Oh, Graf Rudi, diese Nacht
ist viel zu schön, um sie zu verschlafen. Würde es Ihnen
etwas ausmachen, mit mir durch den Garten zu spazieren?« Mir machte der Spaziergang ganz und gar nichts aus
und ich lauschte fasziniert den Worten dieser großartigen
Lady, hatte aber Angst, dass mich jemand mit dieser extrem gepuderten, nach Muguet-Parfum duftenden Begleiterin sehen könnte, die sicher mehr als 60 Jahre älter war
als ich 25-Jähriger.
Mit diesen Erinnerungen laufe ich durch den mit Bougainvillea bedeckten Bogen und gehe in Richtung Strand.
Bis in die Mitte der 1950er-Jahre war dies nur ein sandiger Weg, der vom Clubhaus ans Meer führte. Dann bauten wir unsere kleinen Villen entlang des Weges. Zuerst

With such memories in my mind I walk under the
bougainvillea-covered arch and wander towards the
beach. Until the middle of the 1950s this was just a
sandy track that led from the club house to the sea and
then we built our little villas along the track. First came
Romeo and Juliet, so named because they looked like
a loving couple all alone. Then came four Mexican inspired villas with their own gardens and pools. The Duke
of Windsor used to stay in the one nearest the beach,
La Paz. Today the path to La Paz is fringed with aromatic bushes and shrubs. It was with the Duke in mind
that, with seeds Alfonso brought back from Mexico, we
planted some lime trees there so that he could use them
to give his first dry martini of the evening a little zest.
Opposite the "Windsor" villa was Alfonso's own
house, a rambling and relaxed cottage ornée. It was
here that he planted kumquats from Mexico, grapefruits,
papayas, mangoes and guayabas (psidium Guajava), all
of which he brought back from his journeys, around the
herb garden which he cherished so much for seasoning his
cooking. It is here too, at the edge of this herb garden, that
the Club's most impressive tree is to be found: the acacia
xanthophloea, also known as the "fever tree". Alfonso
brought it back from a safari in Kenya, from lake Naivasha
where, looking out of his tent, he discovered at the foot of
this tree several small shoots and couldn't resist the temptation to bring one back to Spain. He took one very gently
from the ground, carefully preserving the little roots, along
with some of the African soil, and placed it in an empty
vitamin tube where no customs officer would discover
it. On his return to Marbella he planted it immediately in
his "herb garden" and today, over forty years later, we can
admire the fabulous result of an enormous tree artistically
illuminated so that even at night we can appreciate its
yellow-greenish bark.
To get closer you need to walk on the lawn, and will
notice the soft cushion of the evergreen grass. This was
mutterseelenallein wie ein Liebespaar standen. Es folgten
vier mexikanisch angehauchte Villen mit eigenen Gärten
und Pools. Der Herzog von Windsor übernachtete gern in
der, die dem Strand am nächsten war, in La Paz. Heute wird
der Weg zu La Paz von duftenden Büschen und Sträuchern
gesäumt. Der Herzog hatte die Idee, mit den Samen, die
Alfonso aus Mexiko mitbrachte, einige Zitronenbäume zu
pflanzen, damit er den ersten trockenen Martini am Abend
mit einer frischen Zitronenscheibe genießen konnte.
Gegenüber der »Windsor«-Villa befand sich das Haus
von Alfonso, ein weitläufiges und zur Erholung geeignetes
Landhaus. Hier pflanzte er Kumquats aus Mexiko, Grapefruits, Papayas, Mangos und Echte Guaven (Psidium guajava), die er alle von seinen Reisen mitbrachte. Im Zentrum
befand sich der Kräutergarten, den er sehr pflegte, um
seine Gerichte gut würzen und verfeinern zu können.
Und hier am Rande dieses Kräutergartens befindet
sich der eindrucksvollste Baum des Clubs: die Acacia
xanthophloea, auch bekannt unter dem Namen »Fieberbaum«. Alfonso brachte ihn von einer Safari in Kenia mit,
vom Naivashasee, wo er aus seinem Zelt heraus am Fuße
dieses Baumes ein paar kleine Triebe entdeckte und der
Versuchung nicht widerstehen konnte, einen davon nach
Spanien mitzubringen. Er nahm ganz behutsam einen
davon, achtete darauf, dass etwas von der afrikanischen
Erde an den Wurzeln erhalten blieb, und verstaute ihn in
einem leeren Vitaminröhrchen, so, dass ihn kein Zollbeamter entdecken würde. Gleich nach seiner Rückkehr nach

also brought back by Prince Alfonso from Cuernavaca,
Mexico, in the early Marbella days when we couldn't find
a locally grown grass which would resist our sub-tropical
climate and its scanty rainfall. From this one small clump
of Mexican grass (grama stenotaphorum secundatum)
have grown the lawns of gardens the length of the entire Costa del Sol. Alfonso forgot that he had packed it
and when the valet came to empty his suitcases, he
simply tossed this precious grass onto the compost heap
where it flourished and thrived almost by accident – a
very Marbella story. These are just a few of my personal botanical favourites drawn from amongst hundreds
of trees, flowering shrubs, climbing plants and of course
flowers. When I tried to count the number of different
varieties of bougainvillea, white, red, mauve, yellow, pink
and so on, I lost count after 30.
It is the gardens that do so much to give the Club its
special character; the plants have grown like a big family. For me the gardens have always been the true "luxury"
of the Marbella Club and we have always paid them as
much attention as to the luxury inside the rooms.
On the way back to the Restaurant I stop for a
moment at the Palo Borracho (chorisia speciosa) which
in a few years has grown to a tremendous height. When
most of the other plants have no more flowers and the
tree itself has lost all its leaves, this tree produces masses
of pink blooms in order to remind us that even in November Marbella is blessed with "eternal spring".

wo wir heute – mehr als vierzig Jahre später – das sagenhafte Ergebnis bewundern können: einen riesigen Baum,
wunderschön beleuchtet, sodass wir sogar nachts seine
gelb-grünliche Rinde wahrnehmen können. Um näher
heranzukommen, muss man auf dem Rasen laufen und
spürt dabei das weiche Polster des immergrünen Grases.
Dieses brachte Prinz Alfonso auch von einer Reise nach
Cuernavaca in Mexiko mit. Das war in den frühen Tagen
Marbellas, als vor Ort kein Gras zu finden war, das dem
subtropischen Klima und seinen spärlichen Regenfällen
standhalten konnte. Aus diesem kleinen Häufchen Gras
aus Mexiko (Grama stenotaphrum secundatum) wuchsen
die gesamten Rasenflächen des Gartens, vergleichbar mit
der Länge der gesamten Costa del Sol. Alfonso vergaß,
dass er es eingepackt hatte, und als der Diener seine
Koffer auspackte, warf er dieses wertvolle Gras einfach
auf den Kompost, wo es ganz zufällig gedieh – eine typische Marbella-Geschichte. Dies sind nur einige meiner
ganz persönlichen botanischen Lieblinge unter Hunderten
von Bäumen, blühenden Sträuchern, Kletterpflanzen und
natürlich Blumen. Wenn ich versuchte, die Anzahl der verschiedenen Arten von Bougainvillea zu zählen – weiß, rot,
violett, gelb, rosa und so weiter – kam ich schon nach 30
mit dem Zählen nicht mehr mit.
Es sind vor allem die Gärten, die dem Club seinen besonderen Charakter verleihen; die Pflanzen sind
wie eine große Familie miteinander (auf-)gewachsen.
Für mich sind die Gärten der wahre »Luxus« des Marbella Clubs und wir schenkten ihnen immer ebenso
viel Aufmerksamkeit wie der luxuriösen Einrichtung
der Zimmer. Auf dem Rückweg zum Restaurant halte
ich kurz am Florettseidenbaum (Chorisia speciosa), der
innerhalb weniger Jahre zu einer gewaltigen Höhe herangewachsen ist. Wenn die meisten anderen Pflanzen
keine Blüten mehr tragen und der Baum selbst seine Blätter verloren hat, sprießen aus diesem Baum ganz viele rosa
Blüten, um uns daran zu erinnern, dass Marbella selbst im
November mit einem »ewigen Frühling« gesegnet ist.

The Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos (White Village
Route) runs through the countryside of Andalusia
in the south of Spain. In partly mountainous territory, it passes through a number of small towns
and villages that were mostly originally Phoenician
and Roman settlements, and were expanded by the
Moors from the 8th to the 15th century. The white
villages are characterised by whitewashed houses
and narrow, twisting alleys, similar to those found
in North Africa. In most of these places there are
also churches (often built on the sites of former
mosques) and seigniorial houses from the centuries following the Reconquista, whose Gothic,
Renaissance and Baroque architecture forms an
interesting contrast to the Moorish character of the
houses. Many visitors begin their trip in Arcos de la
Frontera, which is generally regarded as the starting
point of the Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos. The white

It may be quite a while till Christmas, but we would already like to call
your attention to a very special event that
will be taking place this December.

jetzt auf ein ganz besonderes Event im
Dezember aufmerksam machen.
The annual St. Nicholas Dinner of Concordia Marbella will be held on the 7th of that month. Concordia will invite a host of guests to the Hotel Puente
Romano to not only spend a lovely evening together
but also to do their bit in the battle against AIDS.
The organisation, headed up by Princess Marie
Louise, Countess Schönburg, has long been committed to provide a good deal of support for those
suffering from AIDS and their families. And throughout the year, Concordia holds many attractive charity events in support of that cause. Dining together,
networking, laughing and dancing – these are the
cornerstones of every Concordia event. Because
without the help and support of the very many helpers, donors and sponsors, Concordia would be unable to do the good work it does. And on 7 December, the Princess and her team will again be saying
thank you to these generous people and experiencing a marvellous evening in their company.

fairway bunker, you're
best off choosing a wood
or hybrid club with a
20/22 degree loft (see
photo). The advantage of
these clubs is that they
have a broad and do not
sink too deep into the
sand. But note the following: broad stance (shoulder-wide), don't dig your
feet in, ball position opposite the left breast, 70%
swing tempo, a soft grip and remember to aim for
the upper half of the ball.
