OPENING NIGHT GALA:
Night of Argentina
TANGO GLORIES (FERMIN) / FERMÍN, GLORIAS DEL TANGO
DRAMA
Argentina / 2013 / 117 min.
Directed by Hernán Findling and Oliver Kolker
Spanish w/ English Subtitles
Featuring an extraordinarily moving performance from Héctor
Alterio and dazzling dance numbers, “Tango Glories (Fermin)”
centers on psychiatrist Ezequiel Kaufman (Gaston Pauls, “Nine
Queens”), who has been offered a four-year residency at a
prestigious clinic. But first, he must present a clinical case
study and he finds the perfect one in 85-year-old Fermin
Turdera (Alterio), who expresses himself through the lyrics and
titles of tango songs. As Ezequiel digs deep into the causes
of this unique phenomenon, he is reintroduced by Fermin to
a cultural expression he took for granted and discovers that
tango is more than just dance and music...it is a way of life,
with a philosophy of its own.

GLORIA CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:
Paulina García
Gloria Award designed by Juan José Eguizábal
The world discovered one of Chile’s best kept acting secrets when
Paulina Garcia charmed critics and audiences alike last year at the Berlin
International Film Festival with her touching and uplifting performance in
Sebastian Lelio’s “Gloria,” which earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress
at the Festival. “Gloria” was just one of four movies that came out last year
starring this force of nature, two of them featured in this year’s Chicago
Latino Film Festival: “Illiterate” and Closing Night film “I Am from Chile.”
Paulina has wowed theater, television and movie audiences alike in her
native country since she professionally stepped on stage for the first time in
1983. As an actress she has appeared in over 20 plays; she has also directed
countless plays. She made her television debut in 1984 in the long running
soap opera “Los Titeres” and her feature film debut in 2002 in “Three Nights
on a Saturday”. She is currently working alongside Antonio Banderas,
Rodrigo Santoro and Adriana Barraza in “Los 33” about the 33 Chilean
miners trapped underground for two months after the mine they worked on
collapsed.
The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago is proud to
present Paulina Garcia with the Gloria Career Achievement Award in
recognition of her contributions to the performing arts.
The award will be presented during the Closing Night Gala, Wednesday, April
16th.
“Las analfabetas” y nuestra película de clausura, “I Am from Chile”.

DRAMA
Argentina / 1985 / 112min.
Directed by Luis Puenzo
Academy Award Winner / Ganadora del Premio de la Academia
Spanish w/ English Subtitles
Also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay written directly for the
screen, “The Official Story” was one of the first Argentinean films to tackle the still
controversial subject of the illegal adoptions by the country’s last military dictatorship of
the sons and daughters of the men and women who were “disappeared”. Alicia (Norma
Aleandro) is challenged by her students to see beyond the “official story” she so eagerly
teaches at her boys’ prep school. But when she learns about these illegal adoptions
from an old friend, Alicia begins to suspect that her adopted daughter Gaby may actually
be the daughter of one of those disappeared and soon embarks on an investigation of
her own against her husband Roberto’s (Hector Alterio) wishes.

Rojo’s (Marisa Paredes) autograph. She travels to Barcelona in search of his father,
a transvestite named Lola. Manuela reconnects with old friend Agrado (Antonia San
Juan) who soon introduces her to Rosa (Penelope Cruz), a young nun left pregnant and
with HIV by Lola. Into this close circle of friends walks Huma. Featuring one of the best
ensembles in Almodóvar’s work, “All About My Mother” also looks forward to the more
daring, mature work that would come from this master of world cinema.

Benjamin Esposito (Ricardo Darin), a retired criminal court employee, decides to
write a novel based on a case that still haunts him to this day: the rape and murder
of a beautiful young married woman in 1974. The novel also gives him the excuse to
reconnect and maybe even rekindle his unrequited romance with senior prosecutor
Irene Menendez Hastings (Soledad Villamil). Seamlessly combining elements of the
police procedural with a love story, a political thriller and a melancholic reflection
about memory, “The Secret in Their Eyes” is classic filmmaking at its best, featuring a
hypnotic performance by Darin and a career changing one for Argentinean comedian
Guillermo Francella as Sandoval, Esposito’s alcoholic but wily partner-in-crime.

DRAMA
Peru / 2009 / 100 min.
Directed by Claudia Llosa

Fausta is scared of the outside world and with good reason: her mother was raped
during the decade-long war on terrorism in Peru. Striken by a rare disease known
as “the milk of sorrow,” Fausta herself has undertaken a rather bizarre form of
contraception to avoid being a victim of a similar fate. But after her mother’s sudden
death, Fausta must venture out to earn enough money to pay for her mother’s burial at a
distant site. “The Milk of Sorrow” allegorically deals with how a country and its people
try to come to terms with violence.

quietly assured family drama and a subtle exploration of the issue of fairness in Brazil’s
juvenile criminal court system.
desigualdade no sistema judicial juvenil do Brasil .

On May 24, 1981, the plane carrying Jaime Roldos, Ecuador’s first democratically
elected president after years of military dictatorship, his wife and four other people
crashed in the mountains. Foul play was immediately suspected. Drawing on more than
80 hours of interviews, archival footage and research, Sarmiento and Rivera draw a
compelling portrait of the man and an equally compelling argument for the involvement
in his death of the military dictatorships in Chile and Argentina as well as certain U.S.
commercial interests. Immediately after the documentary was released, Ecuador’s
president Rafael Correa ordered a new investigation on Roldos’ death.

performance from Vanessa Alvario as Lucia, “Thou Shalt Not Steal” is a moving story
about survival in a harsh environment.

Christian Arzu was a child when he became a member of the infamous Mara 18 gang.
Jose Antonio Flores’ life was thrown off-track by drugs and alcohol; he became a feared
gang lord. Rosny Castellanos was a high school student but hanging out with the wrong
crowd and an affinity for guns led him to a 22-year prison sentence. Julio Bolton grew
up on the streets, the Mara 18 becoming his surrogate family. All four of them are today
prisoners of the penal institution of El Porvenir near the coastal town of La Ceiba in
Honduras, site of one of the deadliest prison riots in that country’s history.

for awhile, Ivan is tricked into adopting a pig, providing him something to finally care

the 70s. After the industry fell into decline in the 80s, “Pinolito” became a star in the
cabaret circuit. Coming to terms with his own gender identity and adopting the name
Coral Borelli, the former child star underwent surgery and hormone treatments while
struggling with the entertainment industry’s and society’s prejudices. Roberto Fiesco’s
documentary not only addresses issues of gender identity and homophobia in Mexico
but also offers a fond look at an often-ignored period of Mexico’s film history.

All hell breaks loose when theater director Isa decides to remove the Mussolini-inspired
set design for her production of Albert Camus’ “Caligula” a couple of weeks before
opening night, and informs her cast and crew that she is rethinking the entire concept
of the play. In no particular order she has to contend with the departure of her lead
actor, the potential loss of their French financing, a neurotic costume designer and an
offended diva. Isa doesn’t help matters much when she decides to cast a young woman
in the lead role. Featuring Fernando Lujan, Cecilia Suarez, Rebecca Jones and, in a
small cameo, Sylvia Pinal, “Last Call” is an outrageously agile comedy.

Ana and Lucho’s love story started when they were two little kids in 1970s Peru but
it wouldn’t blossom until the violent 80s, when Sendero Luminoso’s attacks and the
military’s response sent the country into a bloody spiral. For both teens and their best
friends, the only way to survive is by imagining what it would be like to live in a distant,
foreign land, a thought that some put into action as they migrate to escape the violence.
Díaz Costa’s deeply personal portrait of this era stands as a metaphor for the loss of
innocence.

Is love bound by the laws of physics? According to Gabi Ochoa’s unique take on the
romantic comedy, yes, it is. Three couples fall in and out of love in the big city: Alex and
Lucia are barely beginning to know each other, yet their relationship will embody the
romance, exhilaration and passion of love at first sight; Paz and Jorge have reached the
other end of the spectrum, as their love for each other fades away without their knowing
why; and after decades of separation Albert and Irene rekindle that flame that burned
so bright many years ago.

ANINA
ANIMATION
Uruguay / 2013 / 80 min.
Directed by Alfredo Soderguit
Spanish w/ English Subtitles
Ten-year-old Anina Yatay Salas does not like her name; each part is a palindrome,
which means it reads the same way forwards and backwards. Anina’s schoolmates love
to tease her about it until Anina can’t take it anymore and gets into a fight during recess
with her arch-enemy. Their punishment is rather unusual: they are each given a sealed
envelope by the principal and told not to open it until next week. The mystery will eat at
Anina and get her into trouble. Drawn in a pencil-and-watercolor style, the whole family
will fall in love with Anina and with this delightful film.

CESAR’S LAST FAST
DOCUMENTARY
USA / 2013 / 100 min.
Directed by Richard Ray Perez, Lorena Parlee
English
An excellent companion film to the recently released biopic about the legendary labor
leader directed by Diego Luna, this documentary is built around Cesar Chavez’s final act
of protest: a 36-day water-only hunger strike to draw attention to the horrific effects
of unfettered pesticide use on farms and how they affected workers, their families and
their communities. Built around never-before-seen footage of the fast, and interviews
with friends, family and supporters, “Cesar’s Last Fast” paints a unique portrait of one
of America’s most enduring labor icons.

Tomas’ son Lucas may be blind but he can “see” things others can’t see, hear things

the military could very well be in jeopardy. The unexpected return of Glenda, a former
acquaintance, to the city sets up a series of events that end up with both Tomas and
Glenda alone in a hospital. Really alone. There is no one walking the hospital’s corridors
or the city’s streets. It’s as if they had stepped into a twilight zone of their own.

You either pay or die. That’s the
rule that people from the city of
Juarez, Mexico must follow in order
to survive. Meanwhile, there are
reporters living in hiding in order to
report the crimes. In the end, who
will win?
This is the story of a mother who
struggles with her maternal instincts.
After her son commits a crime, she
fears that he is not who she thought
he was.
When it comes to accidents, we think
they can never happen to us. In this
fable, a man’s fate is determined by
his own actions.
The school “Los Urrocoes,” is part of
Fe y Alegria Rural Education Core in
Nicaragua. For a year, we share the
daily lives of pupils and teachers and
we accompany them through their
lessons, seasons, homework and
plantings.

A woman fights a losing battle: being

this film warns of a world where

Una mujer libra una batalla perdida.
Uno no puede ser pobre y permanecer
entre lo cotidiano, lo familiar, y donde
uno nació y creció. Contada con gran
lirismo, esta película advierte sobre un
mundo en donde todo parece estar en

se resisten a un futuro que parece

All families have secrets and lies;
and, at some point, everyone has
thought of confessing everything.
But when? In a family where the
matriarch is blind and every one of
her children has a secret, which one
of them will dare to tell her the truth
on Christmas Eve?
After getting out of a long-term
relationship, Albert calls on his hard
partying, womanizing buddies, Lex
and Charlie to get him through the
heartache. Will living the single
life help him get over his past or
will it only lead to an even bigger
headache?
We wake up every day and follow a
routine. Beep is a hectic tale about a
young man, stuck in a daily routine,
who tries to hold on to what little
humanity he has left in a world
plagued by monotonous electronic
beeps.
An undocumented immigrant is hired
to finish a job in an American home.
A simple misunderstanding puts him
on the brink of deportation because
of the family’s misconception of
immigrants.
Todas las familias guardan secretos y
mentiras; y todo el mundo se plantea
alguna vez soltarlo todo. Pero ¿cuándo
hacerlo?
modernidad.
