Durham District School Board Trustee
As you all embark on this new school year, I
encourage you to set your goals, find your
passion, carve out your niche, try new things,
support each other and make new friends. Above
all, don’t let the fear of making mistakes, failing
at something or the opinion of others define your
journey, be true to who you are.
Whether you know it or not each and every one of
you is special, extraordinary and have the
capacity to change the world. Don’t forget that!

GRADE 9 - TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK DAY
TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK DAY for ALL GRADE 9
STUDENTS
The 21st Annual Take Our Kids to Work Day is
Wednesday, November 4, 2015. This is a day where
Grade 9 students across Canada will spend the day at
work job shadowing a parent/guardian, relative, friend or
volunteer host.
For students, it’s more than just a fun day. It’s an
opportunity to:
Understand the importance of staying in school, pursuing
post-secondary studies, apprenticeships and school
to workplace transitions.
Understand the importance of staying in school by seeing
first-hand the skills required in today’s workplaces.
Start exploring career options in a practical way and
gaining a better understanding of the many career
choices open to them.
For parents, it’s an opportunity to prepare your
children for the future by:
Participating in a shared experience with their child.
Enriching their child’s experience with career discussions
before, during and after the workplace visit.
Grade 9 students will be receiving permission forms
in Homeroom at the end of October.
Check out www.thelearningpartnership.ca/TOKW for more
information or see Mrs. Winchester in the Co-op Office.
On October 20th, 2015,
Richardson will be taking any
college -bound grade 12
students (graduating by June
2016) to the Enercare Centre
for The Annual Ontario College Information Fair.
Permission forms for this event are located in the
Guidance office. If students are unable to come with
the school on that date, the Fair is also offering an
additional session on October 19th from 5:00pm9:00pm at the Toronto venue.
Richardson will also be having an in-house College
Fair on October 29th, 2015. By this point, students
should have a good idea of what colleges they are
considering and can use this opportunity to finalize
their choices for the College application deadline on
February 1st, 2016.
For more College information, both students and
parents should visit www.ontariocolleges.ca.

CREDITS TAKEN OUTSIDE OF J. CLARKE
RICHARDSON COLLEGIATE
Students who are taking a course outside of Richardson
(for example, through night school, private school, etc.)
must fill out a “Credits Taken Outside of J. Clarke
Richardson Collegiate” form. This will ensure students’
grades are entered into our reporting system, which
electronically sends students’ marks to colleges and
universities.
GRADE 12 INFORMATION continued...
RESEARCH ALL OF YOUR POST-SECONDARY OPTIONS
This is the time that grade 12’s need to be continuously
researching post-secondary options. We cannot stress
enough the importance of attending the schools’ Open
Houses. We have a list of the dates of open houses in our
Guidance Department or you can visit a specific school’s
website for more information. If you have already missed
the open house, we strongly encourage you to contact the
school to set up a tour. An important part of researching
options is for students to actually go to the college or
university to explore what feelings they experience there
because this will give them direction in deciding what suits
their individual needs best. Grade 12 students are also
being advised to keep researching university programs and
college programs because they need to be aware of all of
their options in order to make the best decisions.
BRIDGING PROGRAMS
Bridging programs are becoming increasingly popular and
are offered through college and university agreements. Did
you know you can now complete a college diploma and use
that diploma to apply for and complete a university degree?
Universities want to offer you the hands -on experience of
college and combine it with your degree. At the end of four
years, you could possibly have a College Diploma and a
Bachelor’s Degree. You can find out more information
about these programs by visiting www.ONtransfer.ca.

An Evening of Hope
Tuesday, October 20th, 2015, PFLAG Canada Durham Region, Durham Region and the Distress Centre Durham
are presenting An Evening of Hope at Memorial Park in Oshawa, Ontario. Join in solidarity with us, rain or
shine, at 7pm to 10pm for an evening of remembrance while inspiring change.
The evening is dedicated to remembering members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community
who we have lost due to bullying, homophobia/transphobia and suicide. Shaquille Wisdom, a former DDSB
student, along with many others have been taken from this world too soon, will be remembered.
An evening of Hope brings issues that the LGBTQ community face to light and encourages Durham to be a
safer, more inclusive society for all. Join us for a night of hope, solidarity, inspiration and healing as we say no
to hate and continue the effort to end bullying, homophobia/transphobia and suicide. The night will include
speeches and performances from people across the region.

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE
Parents and Guardians, please be aware that the Durham District School Board does NOT provide accident insurance
coverage for student injuries. Families should recognize that there is always a potential risk of injury with field trips,
sports and other student activities both on and off school grounds. Although precautions are taken to ensure the
protection of students, accidents can and do happen. Some injuries result in medical, dental or other expenses that are
not covered by provincial health care or employer group plans and can be very costly. As a parent or guardian, you
become responsible for these expenses.
In accordance with the Education Act, we do make available a Student Accident Insurance Program for students.
Participation in this program is voluntary and the costs are to be paid by the parent or guardian.
For your convenience, we have arranged access to a Student Accident Insurance Policy through Reliable Life Insurance
Company. This program offers a variety of plans and benefits at affordable prices.
Some of the benefits included are:

Dental expenses (resulting from an accident)

Fracture or dislocation

Rehabilitation

Emergency transportation

Total and permanent disability
If your child participates in co-curricular activities or activities outside the school day, there is also a plan tailored to your
needs. All rates are one-time annual premiums. The insurance agreement is between you and Reliable Life Insurance
Company. For complete details please refer to the website at: www.insuremykids.com.
Any questions should be directed to Reliable Life Insurance Company toll free at
1-800-463-KIDS (5437).
Durham Student Transportation Services - Inclement Weather & Bus Cancellation Information

The four zones are as follows:
Zone 1 - Brock Area
Zone 2 - Uxbridge Area
Zone 3 - Scugog Area
Zone 4 - Southern Durham Region Area
The website indicates the schools that are in each zone. We would encourage
all families to ensure that they have confirmed which zone applies to their
school and area.

Library Update
A Busy September @ your
library
The year got off to a busy start with all
grade nine students coming to the
library for an orientation that provided
details of the library resources and
policies. The information they received
is available on our Richardson website
under Learning Commons.
The Learning Commons digital space is
available for students’ families as well.
Students should come by the library to
grab a password sheet which provides
access to a large collection of databases.
Also, every student has 5gb of storage
space through our Microsoft Office365
software suite. Did you know you can
install Office 2013 on up to five personal
devices for free? Students just need to
sign in to O365 off the Richardson
website. Come by the library to find out
how!
The library would also like to thank our
whole new team of library student
volunteers who have been keeping us
operational before school, after school
and at lunch.
There is also great anticipation around
the upcoming announcement of the
White Pine Reading program titles for
this year. Students should watch for the
launch of Richardson’s White Pine
program in December.
