RECITAL PERFORMANCE LOCATION
(The Newmark Theatre, 1111 SW Broadway at Main Street, downtown Portland)
Directions from I-5 South: Follow I-5 to I-405. Go west on I-405 to Salmon Street exit.
After exiting, turn right on SW Salmon Street. Continue East 7 blocks to SW Broadway. The
Newmark is on the right just past the Schnitzer Concert Hall.
There are several parking structures close by and very limited parking on the street. PC
members enter through the stage door on Broadway and Main. One parent is allowed to enter to
help unload at dress rehearsal and to pack up at the end of each performance if necessary, but
are not allowed backstage during rehearsals or performances without an official backstage pass.
Staff members will be on hand to help with costume changes.
WHAT TO DO FOR EACH RECITAL
Please arrive each day at the designated call time with your hair and make-up done! Get settled
in dressing rooms. We will be checking EVERYONE’S make-up. All females need false eyelashes.
A big responsibility for the dancers is to reapply hairspray and lipstick between routines.
WATER & SNACKS
Please remember to drink lots of water. Please send adequate snacks/lunch to get through each
day. NO EATING OR DRINKING IN THE AUDITORIUM.
STUDENTS ARE TO REMAIN IN THEIR DRESSING ROOMS OR WORKING IN BRUNISH
HALL WHEN NOT DANCING.
At dress rehearsal parents are allowed to assist their child setting up their belongings in
their dressing rooms. One parent per child can be in the dressing room to help during dress
rehearsal only and only if absolutely necessary. PC members are expected to be able to handle
this on their own (with chaperone assistance, of course). Staff and chaperones will assist with
costume changes, “quick changes” and hair changes. Parents must DROP OFF their child at the
stage door entrance for ALL recitals. If you feel your dancer needs assistance please bring
them up to get settled then proceed to the lobby. We have limited space backstage and in the
dressing rooms. Thanks for your understanding.
You will be in the same dressing room for all 4 recitals.
1) You can leave all of your costumes, etc. at the auditorium for the duration of the recitals and
rehearsals.
2) Please consider applying your makeup before arriving at theater as mirror space is limited.
3) Please enter the theatre through the stage door only. Check your name off the roll sheet at
the stage door every day.
4) DRESSING ROOMS MUST BE PICKED UP AND CLEAN AT THE END OF EACH
PERFORMANCE!
5) Warm up and stretch ALL THE WAY. This is a BIG responsibility! Please do what you need to
(should know how to do by now…J) and warm up correctly!
Dancers are responsible for keeping their costume pieces organized. Make sure EVERY costume
piece has your name or initials or special mark on it. A hanging garment bag is a good way to keep
all the pieces together. You can throw everything into the bag after each routine, and then
organize and hang everything up at the end of each recital. If you misplace a costume piece, let
a teacher or director know IMMEDIATELY. Don’t wait until just before you are ready to
perform to let someone know you have a problem.
If you are in other routines (Elite Acro, Ballet Company, HipNotic, JR Crew, Pointe, etc.) your
schedule will change accordingly. Your group chaperone will have a list of all the routines that
each dancer is in and will help you get where you need to be.
Students should be considerate of the stage manager. Do not stand next to, talk or ask
questions of the stage manager, Stephanie Scruggs. If you have a question that you can’t
answer by looking at the stage cues on the wall, ask a Westside employee or backstage
volunteer only.
If you are a class assistant, then you may accompany your class backstage and stay with them
until they are back in Brunish Hall.
There will be recital programs with stage cues posted in the downstairs hallway and dressing
rooms. Hopefully this will answer many of your questions regarding blackouts, entrances, and
exits, etc. If you have questions PLEASE ask your chaperone, the backstage monitor or a
teacher. Please do not ask the directors backstage. They are busy keeping the recitals running
smoothly!
“Goodnight” will follow Closing Production. Which will then be followed by a musical “encore”.
You will be instructed about the encore in production rehearsal.
You will be held on stage 5
minutes after the encore to allow the regular class members to get to their dressing areas.
PC members need to be at every recital at the designated call time. Even if you are only doing
closing production, you may have other important jobs to help out with recital. Even if you
don’t have additional duties, we feel it is important for you to be at recital to support your
peers. You are not allowed to leave the theatre at ANY time during rehearsals or recitals.
QUICK CHANGE
There will be an adult helper in the quick-change room to help with dancers. If you have 3
routines or less to change, then you will need to move that costume to the Quick Change room.
(The PC boys will meet Stage Right in their own dressing room.). After you change, the monitor
will put all of your costume pieces into a large plastic bag and put your name on it. After closing
production you can pick up the bag and take it back to your dressing room to hang up. Bring a
basket or pop up box to place in quick change so that you can dump your costume and shoes right
into the basket for safe keeping.
One parent will need to meet your child at the stage door after
each performance. Only dancers 16 years of age or older will be
permitted to leave without a parent.
Videotaping and flash pictures are allowed at dress rehearsal ONLY.
NO VIDEO TAPING OR FLASH PICTURES ARE ALLOWED AT
PERFORMANCES.
PC RECITAL DUTIES
Graduates-RELAX
Brunish Hall Make-Up Assistant: You are assigned to assist with make-up and possibly coloring
pages in Brunish Hall. You may be assigned oversee activities, run students to the restrooms,
run errands for the adult coordinator, etc. Please remain in the Hall except when you are
changing or getting ready to dance.
Dress Rehearsal Hall Assistants: There will be 1 person assigned to work ½ of dress rehearsal
for each recital. You will be stationed by the curtained exit on the left side of the theatre
(stage R). You will assist in getting classes to and from the stage when they are called back for
their routine.
Brunish Hall Escorts: There are 4 PC kids (per recital) who are asked to escort the Rec
students during the recital.
DANCERS:
1.
At recital, we expect our PC members to behave in a professional manner at all times! Because you
represent the BEST of Westside Academy, we know you can handle this request and realize that
the younger and less experienced performers will be looking up to you and will learn from your
behavior. We know you will represent the GREAT dancers of Westside in a positive manner.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
Stay quiet backstage and in the hallways.
At dress rehearsal…remain in audience at ALL times unless you are changing or dancing.
At dress rehearsal…stay out of the balcony area and front lobby.
At recitals…stay with your group in the dressing rooms unless you are warming up or doing an
assigned job or dancing. YOU ABSOLUTELY ARE NOT TO LEAVE THE BUILDING UNTIL
AFTER YOU ARE EXCUSED FOLLOWING CLOSING PRODUCTION. Leaving the theatre
during recital is cause for being removed from Performing Company. This is for your safety!
Warm up all tricks at dress rehearsals and recitals- completely paying attention to splits, back
flexibility, and double tricks.
Check your own group for appropriate make-up and hair before every routine – Remember to reapply lipstick and check for enough bobby pins. We will be checking make-up this year. You need
to be wearing the Performing Company make-up. All Performing Company members need to have
identical make-up. This is critical for a uniform, professional look, especially in the production
numbers when everyone is on stage together. Do not use glitter or facial rhinestones (except for
s/d/t’s, and then it must be removed and PC make-up reapplied for group routines).
NO STUDENTS ALLOWED BACKSTAGE UNTIL 2 NUMBERS BEFORE YOU DANCE!
No wandering through the building. Be where you are supposed to be at all times!
THANK YOU FOR SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS!
