Content and methodology of supervision:
As part of the UN WomenJPO programme overall framework, the JPO will benefit from the following
supervision modalities:

Structured guidance provided by the supervisor, especially in the beginning of the assignment, with the
purpose of gradually increasing the responsibilities of the JPO

Establishment of a work plan, with clear key results

Effective supervision through knowledge sharing and performance/development feedback throughout
the assignment

Easy access to the supervisor

Participation in Unit/Team/Office meetings to ensure integration and operational effectiveness

Guidance and advice in relation to learning and training opportunities within the field of expertise and
compliance with mandatory training for UNWOMEN Staff;

Completion of the yearly UN WomenResults and Competency Assessment (RCA)

If more than one supervisor; clear agreement of the roles and responsibilities between the relevant parties

Duties, Responsibilities and Output expectations

Summary of key functions:





Development and implementation of Communication Strategy for the Country Office
Promotion of visibility of UN Women CO making optimal use of social networking tools.
Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing incorporating the use of new technologies.
Supports CO media related programming and implementation
Supports the business development
Development and implementation of Communication Strategy for the Country Office:







Assist in the outreach messaging and products to better contribute to gender equality and UN
Women’s mandate.
Promoton of the visibility of UN Women in Mozambique: keep partners, as well as the general
public, well-informed about UN Women’sprogrammes, initiatives, "success stories" and results in
Mozambique;
Advocacy, external relations and public outreach: establish and maintain relationships with other UN
agencies, government, media, civil society organizations and academia.
Participation in the UN Communication Working Group
Preparation of Newsletter of the country office
Contribute to development of and maintain the website of Country Office updated
Support to publications by the Country Office.
Promotion of visibility of UN Women’s achievements:











Ensures corporate standards compliance on all the communications;
Develops information-communication tools that ensure a deeper understanding of UN WOMEN
mandate and its work;
Develops strong links with media
Supports development/production of communication and advocacy instruments and materials for
marketing and awareness raisings activities including briefing materials and press releases in
coordination with programme colleagues and the supervisor;
Organize and conduct media activities/events including drafting the major background notes,
agreeing the terms of participation with partners, media relations, preparing talking points,
invitations, press-releases;
Supports integration of advocacy and communication strategies into all aspects of CO work
Keep partners, as well as the general public, well-informed of UNWOMEN’sprogrammes, initiatives,
"success stories" and results;
Ensure a frequent flows of information on gender issues between different actors in the country
namely CSO’s, Government, UN Agencies, International Partners, media, private sector through,
existing networks, websites and the media and new forms;
Promotes, maintains and supports public information campaigns;
Mobilizes media and public opinion for the achievement of UN Women mandate and key objectives
Assist in the outreach messaging and products to better contribute to gender equality and
UNWomen’s.
Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing incorporating the use of social
networking tools:




Assists in the development and maintains the content of the CO website, identifying new
technologies and managing long-term development requests, ensuring the use of new technologies
and social networking tools providing and support partners in the area as required;
Assists in the development and maintenance of the website on Violence against Women in
Mozambique
Supports identification, synthesis and dissemination of best practices and lessons learned directly
linked to CO interventions
Contributes to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate
communications repositories


Maintains an updated repository of evidence of all relevant communication and information
(agendas, mails, communication materials, press releases, relevant citations/references in media)
of performed and relevant actions and events
Share relevant knowledge with colleagues
Supports CO communications for development programming and implementation:

Provides substantive inputs into CO planning and implementation including participation in the UN
development results groups.
Support to business development:



Promotes and disseminates corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and
publications.
Prepares and disseminates information/newsletters/donor reports to donors and other partners in
support of the CO partnership building and resource mobilization efforts.
Supports positioning of the CO as hub of knowledge and information on gender equality and
women’s boosting demand for various services and increasing overall business opportunities.
Expected Results
The efficient delivery of services will contribute to consolidate CO positioning CO as a hub of knowledge
and information on gender equality and Women’s empowerment through:





Enhanced external, as well as internal communication of the Country Office.
Enhanced advocacy capacity and impact;
Higher visibility of the Country Office;
Strengthened interaction with partners: government, civil society organizations, UN Agencies and
international partners.
Improved communications skills among office staff for better promotion of UNWOMEN image
Qualifications and Experience
Required Education and Work Experience:

Master’s Degree or equivalent Advanced Degree in media relations, journalism, publishing or similar
disciplines or related field of expertise

A minimum of two years of relevant work experience in the field of public relations and/or
communications at the national or international level

Working knowledge of English and

Solid experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and
experience in handling of web-based management systems.

Expertise in the use of social networking tools

Other working knowledge language requirements, if applicable: Spanish/Portuguese



Training and Learning
As part of the UN WomenJPO programme overall framework, the JPO will benefit from the following training
and learning opportunities:

Participation in a two-week long UNDP Programme Policy and Operations Induction Course in New
York within the first 3 to 6 months of assignment

Use of yearly JPO duty-related travel and training allocation (DTTA), as per the online DTTA guide

Other training and learning opportunities, as available in UN Women
In addition, the JPO will benefit from the following specific training and learning modalities/opportunities in
the receiving office: Induction on HIV&AIDS in the Workplace, Security Awareness and ATLAS for
the respective function and all UNWOMEN staff mandatory courses within the first 3 months of
the assignment.

elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement
of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights,
humanitarian action and peace and security.
Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UNWOMEN leads and coordinates United Nations
system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality translate into action. UN Women supports
improved UN coordination and accountability mechanisms, and up-scales the quality of support provided to
Member States in addressing national gender equality priorities.
UNWOMEN has placed emphasis on strengthening its country presences in order to provide stronger and
more coherent support to Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil
society and other relevant partners to effectively deliver on gender equality.
In Mozambique, UNWOMEN’s work encompasses interventions in the areas of ending violence against
women, gender responsive planning and budgeting, women’s leadership and participation as well as on
gender and climate change. The work takes place at central, provincial and district level. The main partners
are government institutions at the central, provincial and district levels, media and civil society
organizations.
Through technical assistance, capacity building and advocacy UNW assists a wide range of national partners
and other development stakeholders to put in place the policies, laws, services, adequate resources,
implementation, monitoring and accountability mechanisms and capacities to unlock rapid national progress
in attaining national and international commitments to women and gender equality.

Living conditions at the Duty Station:
The JPO will be stationed in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. Maputo is a pleasant seaside city, with a
population of about 1,112,000 people. Most of the modern world facilities including in goods and services
are easily available or accessible.
