October - November 2014
This is the second year that Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has a program with Castle students being mentored by
adults, with a focus on college and career readiness. We pair up adults one-to-one with students at Castle and provide a
structure of in person meetings and online communication. These relationships and interactions help students to become
more confident, increase their educational aspirations, help them to achieve a growth mindset and prepares them for
academic success.
In person meetings happen once every four to six weeks, and allow all student participants in this program to do activities
as a group, alongside their mentors. For the online communication, prompts are sent out by our agency to student and
their mentors, who then discuss around the topic. These prompts are sent out about every other week.
In order for adults to enroll in this program, they’ll need to complete an application, an interview, and pass a background
and reference check process. For this specific program we’re also asking that potential mentors have graduated from
college. We’re looking for around 10 mentors for this school year, and ask that those signing up understand that we’re
looking for a multiple year commitment. Contact Tyler Kurashige @ Big Brothers Big Sisters (695-4572).
KICK OFF THE HOILDAYS!
Join the Castle Dance Ensemble (CDE) for our annual Holiday Showcase! This one-night-only performance will
be held at the Bright Theatre on Friday, November 21st at 7:30pm and will feature CDE in a variety of dance
styles. This is a free performance, however we will be accepting donations for our upcoming New York trip.

Aloha Parents of 11th Graders,
There have been a lot of changes to our State of Hawaii Department of Education mandatory tests. About 10 years ago, it was all
“paper and pencil” - reading/writing, math and science, with a science lab component. Then, we switched to testing online and had 3
opportunities to pass these 3 tests. Two years ago, the State allowed us to attach grades to their scores, which seem to have driven
the scores up. Then, last year, we had a “bridge” assessment, which had content standards from both HCPS 3 and Common Core,
and we had only 2 opportunities to take these tests. This was a transition test from previous standards into Common Core Standards.
This new assessment is called the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC). This is the first year of this test, although it has
been piloted for the past 2-years . The SBAC will only use the Common Core Standards. The Common Core Standards will be used
across the nation. Hawaii, along with 22 other States, will be using the SBAC assessment. This assessment will be given to all 11th
graders. (Your child is deemed an 11th grader by credits.)
I would like to briefly describe the changes from H.S.A. to SBAC, as well as what the schools intent is to prepare your child to be
successful on this assessment. The scores from this assessment are a large part of our ‘Strive Hi Performance System’ rating, so we
want to do our best! We will need the help and cooperation of everyone to achieve our goals.
The SBAC consists of 2 tests: English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics. Each test is broken down into 3 sections: Computer
Adaptive Test (CAT) which should take about 2-hours; the Classroom Activity, about 30 minutes; and the Performance Task (PT)
should take about 2 hours. The CAT section of both tests, once started, must be completed within 45 days and meet the closing of the
testing window on June 3rd. The PT, once started, must be completed within 10 day and also meet the closing of the testing window.
The Classroom Activity must precede the PT. These tests are not timed, so if your child does not finish within the designated time
period, they can finish up on other days within the 45 days and testing window.
Unlike H.S.A., the SBAC test can only be administered one time. SBAC testing will begin on April 20, 2015. A testing schedule will be
published in our Parent Bulletin, our Castle website, posted on our campus, and a copy of the schedule will be given to all 11th graders
prior to testing. All students who will be testing will receive official notification and information from the Hawaii State Superintendant,
via your child, about a month or so before testing begins.
All of our teachers have been in-serviced on what will be expected of the students on this assessment. The teachers and students will
have ample opportunities to utilize our computer labs to take practice tests, training tests, and operational mid-term assessments.
Your child may also practice on his/her own by logging in to www.smarterbalanced.org, and taking the practice tests themselves.
To make Castle High School successful in reaching our Strive Hi Goals, we need to have our students in school daily, well rested, fed,
and prepared for learning. Our tests will be held in the morning hours, in air-conditioned rooms, and with minimal distractions, to insure
better testing conditions. Hopefully, all of our efforts will make a positive impact on our students’ scores.
The End-of-Course (EOC) Exams will be administered to all students enrolled for the year in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, U.S. History, and
Biology. The Biology scores are used in our Strive Hi rating. All of these tests, except for Algebra 2, will be given in 2 sessions. The
EOC will be worth 15% of your child’s year grade.
We will begin testing from May 5 – June 3, 2014. The students will be testing with their teachers during their respective periods. And,
like the SBAC, the student can take the test only once. (Watch for an updated 2nd. Semester Exam Bell Schedule in Issue 5 of
Knightly News!)
