Adrienne Harris, Ph.D., is Faculty and Supervisor at New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and
Psychoanalysis and at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. In addition, she is a member and Training Analyst in the IPA.
Dr. Harris is an Editor at Psychoanalytic Dialogues and Studies in Gender and Sexuality. In 2009, she along with Lewis Aron and
Jeremy Safron established the Sandor Ferenczi Center at the New School University. Dr. Harris and Lew Aron co-edit the
Book Series Relational Perspectives in Psychoanalysis, a series now with over 50 published volumes.
Dr. Harris has written on topics in gender and development, analytic subjectivity and self-care, primitive states and
the analytic community in the shadow of the First World War. Her current work is on analytic subjectivity and on ghosts.
The morning presentation will focus on the challenges in clinical and analytic work when the analytic instrument—ourselves—is itself
afflicted or compromised. In regard to the life events all people face, the question of how the analyst coordinates clinical work with
personal difficulty is not a question of ‘if’ but ‘when.’ Drawing on Dr. Harris’ experiences of clinical work in the aftermath of profound
personal loss, we will consider the challenges of being maximally present to our patients while bearing “the full catastrophe”
of our own lives. The following issues will be addressed: the analyst's mourning and melancholia; countertransference in times of
personal difficulty; working in the context of a commitment to field theory and intersubjective process. The afternoon presentation will
address more generally the intersection of analytic subjectivity, countertransference, and occupational hazards of clinical work, with
particular emphasis on the problems and strengths that arise in a key aspect of many analysts' character: the prevalence of omnipotence.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: 1. Identify and examine forms of
self-care and community care; 2. Describe how analysts coordinate work in the light of personal difficulties;
3. Explain the presence and cost of omnipotent character structure in analysts’ capacities to work in circumstances of crisis;
4. List the relative merits of the wide range of effects and implications in contemporary theories of countertransference.

Continuing Education Credits: 6 Continuing Education Credits have been approved by American Psychological Association.
In addition 6 Continuing Education Credits have been granted to Vermont Psychologists, Social Workers and Licensed Mental Health Counselors.
This program is available for 6 continuing education credits. Participants must attend 100% of the program. Upon completion of a conference evaluation form,
a certificate will be issued. This serves as documentation of attendance for all participants. Psychologists will have their participation registered through Division 39.
Division 39 is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Division 39 maintains responsibility for the
