Iran consoles Sri Lanka over landslide
TEHRAN - Iran’s Foreign Ministry has expressed sympathy to the Sri Lankan government and nation over the death of a dozen of people in a massive
landslide on a tea plantation.
Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham on Sunday expressed the
Iranian nation and government’s deep sadness over the deaths caused by the
mudslide in central Sri Lanka. At least 38 people are missing or killed after heavy
rainfall caused part of a hillside to sheer off and crash into the Meeriyabedda tea
plantation near the town of Haldummulla, about 200km east of the capital Colombo, on Wednesday. It buried workers' homes in nine meters of mud.
Rescue teams are using mechanical diggers and sniffer dogs to root through
the debris and recover bodies.

President Rohani:
Iran, P5+1 can reach deal on all issues
TEHRAN - Iran’s President Hassan Rohani says
Tehran and the P5+1 group
of countries can reach an allencompassing agreement before a November 24 deadline
set for the talks between the
two sides.
“If the nuclear negotiating
sides have serious determination, we can reach a comprehensive agreement in all
fields in the remaining time,”
President Rohani said in a
Sunday meeting with Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge
Brende in Tehran, Press TV
reported.
Rohani described the bans
against the Iranian nation as
unacceptable and incorrect
and added, “Sanctions are
not beneficial to anybody.”
The Iranian president stated that the Islamic Republic
is serious in its negotiations
with the P5+1 and has always
been “very transparent” on
nuclear issues.
Brende, for his part, expressed his country’s willingness for broad cooperation
with Iran, saying big Norwegian firms are prepared to
resume their activities in Iran
as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad
Javad Zarif said any final
nuclear agreement with the
P5+1 group should recognize the Islamic Republic’s
right to use nuclear energy
for peaceful purposes.
In a Sunday meeting with
visiting Norwegian foreign
minister in Tehran, Zarif said
Iran is “ready” to ink a comprehensive nuclear accord
with the six states – Russia,
China, France, Britain, the
US and Germany – if the
Islamic Republic’s “nuclear
rights are recognized.”
The top Iranian diplomat
further called for closer Tehran-Oslo relations in different spheres, adding, “Ground
has been prepared more than
ever before for the enhancement of bilateral ties.”
Brende, in turn, expressed
hope that the ongoing nuclear talks between Iran and
the six major world powers
would culminate in a final
deal aimed at resolving the
longstanding dispute over
the Islamic Republic’s civilian nuclear work.
In a separate meeting with
Brende in Tehran, Secretary
of Iran’s Supreme National
Security Council (SNSC) Ali
Shamkhani said the removal
of all sanctions against Tehran is an inevitable requisite
for the signing of a comprehensive nuclear agreement
between the Islamic Republic and the P5+1 group.
He added that the Iranian
nuclear negotiating team
would use all possible initiatives to reach a final nuclear
agreement that safeguards
the Islamic Republic’s nuclear rights.
Shamkhani further reaffirmed the “completely
transparent and peaceful”
nature of Iran’s nuclear activities and said as a victim
of weapons of mass destruction, Iran is "one of the most
resolute opponents" of the
production and stockpiling
of such arms.
“We expect that the [International Atomic Energy]
Agency and member states
of the Board of Governors
to seriously follow up on
the strategy of a Middle East
free of nuclear weapons and
[enforcement of] the nonproliferation policies with
regard to countries that possess nuclear weapons,” the
SNSC secretary added.
In another development,
Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior
advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah
Ali Khamenei, said after a
meeting with the Norwegian
foreign minister on Saturday
the Islamic Republic favors
a final agreement with the
P5+1 group of world powers
over the country’s nuclear
energy program by the November 24 deadline.
He said Iran has always
favored negotiations for the
resolution of outstanding issues, adding that Tehran opted for talks in the nuclear issue to defuse "provocations
by some Western countries"
against the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.
Velayati, who is also President of the Expediency
Council’s Center for Strategic Research, said Iran’s
nuclear facilities, including
Natanz, Arak and Fordow,
have been open to inspectors from the International
Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA). He noted that all
reports by the UN nuclear
body confirmed that there
has been no military diversion in Iran’s nuclear energy
program.

Iran defense might non-negotiable: Iran’s UN envoy
TEHRAN - Iran’s envoy to the UN
says Tehran will continue to cooperate
with the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA), but issues related to
the country’s defense programs are
non-negotiable, Press TV reports.
“Based on our principled position, we
continue to cooperate with the IAEA
on clarifying some of the ambiguities.
However, as stated by Iran’s high-ranking officials, areas related to our national security like the defense capabilities
are not subjected to any negotiations
at any level,” said Iran’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Gholam-Hossein
Dehqani.
The senior Iranian diplomat made
the remarks in an address to a meeting
of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday.
The Iranian envoy also urged the
IAEA to be impartial and respect the
right of the country to develop peaceful nuclear energy, adding, “Observing full impartiality and conducting
the technical mandate of the IAEA is
essential for preserving its authority
and credibility and member states’
trust.”
He further said that “the inalienable
right of the NPT (Non-Proliferation
Treaty) members to develop research,
production and use of nuclear energy,
including national nuclear fuel cycles
for peaceful purposes, must be respected by all.”
Dehqani’s comments come amid
repeated calls by some Western officials, particularly in the United States,
who want Iran’s missile program to be
included in the nuclear talks between
Tehran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus
Germany.
Iran and the P5+1 group -- Russia,
China, France, Britain, the US and Germany -- are in talks to work out a final
deal aimed at ending the longstanding
standoff over the Islamic Republic’s
nuclear energy program before a November 24 deadline for the talks.
Iran marks 1979 US embassy takeover
TEHRAN - Iranians have
held massive rallies across
the country to mark the 35th
anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US embassy in the
capital, Tehran.
In Tehran, large group demonstrators gathered outside the
building of the former US embassy, also known as the “den
of espionage,” on Tuesday and
chanted slogans against the
United States and Israel.
November 4, also known
as Student Day in Iran, marks
the day of fight against global
arrogance, Press TV reported.
Thirty five years ago on this
day, a group of university students stormed the embassy
building. They believed the
US mission had turned into
a center of spying aimed at
overthrowing the Islamic
establishment in Iran following the Islamic Revolution
earlier in 1979. Documents
found at the compound later
corroborated claims by revolutionary students that the US
was using its Tehran embassy
to plot to topple the new Islamic establishment of Iran.
Fifty-two American nationals from the embassy
were held for 444 days until
January 20, 1981. Founder
of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Seyyed Rouhollah
Khomeini later hailed the effort as “a second revolution”
with a greater significance.
World Shiite Muslims commemorate Tasoua, Ashoura
TEHRAN - People in Iran
and other countries throughout the world mourned the
martyrdom anniversary of
Imam Hossein (PBUH) on
Tasoua, the 9th and 10th days
of the lunar month of Moharram, Monday and Tuesday.
Tasoua and Ashoura mark
the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram, marking the death of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH)'s grandson,
the revered Imam Hossein
(PBUH) in the Battle of Karbala, in modern-day Iraq
1,300 years ago.
Millions of Shia Muslims
around the world annually commemorate the great
tragedy of Karbala with
various forms of traditional
ceremonies. The mourners
take part in processions held
in mosques and streets with
different traditions to mark
the martyrdom anniversary of Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH)’s grandson Imam
Hussein (PBUH) and his
companions in Karbala.
Around 680 AD, Imam
Hussein (PBUH) along with
his 72 followers was massacred in the battle of Karbala in
Iraq by the forces of the tyrant
ruler of the time, Yazid, the
second Umayyad caliph.
The mourning ceremonies
reach their peak on the 9th day
of Muharram, or Tasua, and
the 10th day, or Ashura, when
Imam Hussein (PBUH) and
his companions were martyred. Muharram ceremonies
beating one’s chest as well as
beating one’s back with light
chains to remind the mourners of the pain and suffering
of Imam Hussein (PBUH)
and his followers on that day.
Iranian people across the
country traditionally cook
and distribute charity food
etry, recitation, music, songs
and motion. The traditional
play narrates the story of the
martyrdom of Imam Hussein
(PBUH) and his companions
in Karbala with its own specific style and rituals.
This Persian Passion Play
was registered on the UNES-
symbolize the eternal and
unwavering stance of truth
against falsehood and humanity’s struggle against tyranny,
the cause for which Imam Hussein (PBUH) was martyred.
Shia rituals and observances on Ashura consist primarily of public expressions of
mourning and grief such as
among their neighbors, family and the poor.
Ta’zieh is also among the
rituals held in Iran during
the Muharram mourning
ceremonies. Ta’zieh, as an
Iranian national and religious dramatic performance,
recounts religious and historical events through po-
CO list during the fifth session of the UN body’s Intergovernmental Committee in
Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2011.
The tragedy of Ashura
leaves a permanent mark on
the soul of any free and compassionate spirit, regardless
of religion or race.
Iran condemns mass executions by ISIL
TEHRAN - Iran has in the
strongest terms condemned
the recent mass execution
by ISIL Takfiri terrorists of
scores of Iraqi people from
the Albu Nimr tribe in the
western province of Anbar.
“The persistence of inhumane tragedies [committed]
by Takfiri terrorists against
followers of religions, ethnicities and minorities in
different parts of Iraq and
Syria is the result of certain
countries’ support for terrorist groups, and bears proof to
the futility of the [so-called]
anti-ISIL coalition,” Iranian
Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham
said on Saturday.
She underlined the need
for countering Takfiri terrorism at its very roots and
urged the international community’s sincere and responsible assistance for Iraq in its
campaign against terrorism,
Press TV reported.
Afkham expressed hope
that the Iraqi nation would
emerge winner in the fight
against terrorism under the
lead of the Iraqi government
and through national unity
and cohesion.
Iran partakes in
Belgrade Book Fair
TEHRAN -Iran is participating in the 59th International
Belgrade Book Fair in Serbia by displaying various published
works of the country.
Iran has offered over a hundred book titles in different categories at the fair which kicked off on October 26.
On Iranian Literature in the Past (Persian-English) by Abdol Hossein Zarrinkoub, From Sa'adi to Aragon (French)
by Javad Hadidi, and Pig's Bone and Leper's Hands (Russian) by Mostafa Mastour are among the Iranian books on
display.
This year’s fair is hosting 897 participants including 494 direct exhibitors and 446 represented companies.
Australia, Russia, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Japan, Bosnia,
India and Austria are among the countries taking part in the
event, with China being named guest of honor.
On Thursday, the bodies of 150 members of the
Albu Nimr tribe were found
in a mass grave near Iraq’s
western city of Ramadi with
security officials saying that
the Takfiri terrorists seized
the men on Wednesday night
and then killed and buried
them in an area near the city
of Ramadi.
Meanwhile, in a separate
incident, sources said they
found 70 bodies from the
same tribe near the town of
Hit in the province. Locals
said the tribesmen were slain
last week in an area con-
trolled by the ISIL cult north
of the town.
Anbar Province, which
borders war-ravaged Syria,
has been a major stronghold
of the ISIL elements and continues to be largely controlled
by the terror group.
The ISIL terrorists have
taken over large swathes of
territory in Iraq. They have
been carrying out horrific
acts of violence, including
public decapitations and
crucifixions, against Iraqi
communities such as Shias,
Sunnis, Kurds, Christians,
and others.
