the main sponsors of the tournament, Sudhesh Kumar, was also

BAHRAIN take on

in the Gulf Cup in
Riyadh.
This Group ‘A’ match kicks
off at 8.15pm. Qatar clash with
Yemen at 5.45pm.
This is the second game for
all four sides and all four in this
group have one point each.
Saudi Arabia drew with Qatar 1-1 while Bahrain were held
goalless by Yemen in the first
round.
Tough
Bahrain and Saudi Arabia
have met each other 32 times
in the Gulf Cup with the later
winning 17 and the former six
while the remaining nine have
ended in draws.
Bahrain are coached by Iraqi

is expected to field the team

BAHRAIN handball team made a
perfect start in their title bid in the
Fourth Asian Beach Games in Phuket
yesterday.
The nationals defeated bitter rivals
Kuwait 30-20 in the opening clash to
top the five-team Group ‘B’, which also
includes Pakistan, India, Thailand and
Bangladesh.
The game was a well-contested affair
but Bahrain proved better in both halves,
going ahead 15-10 in the first-half and
continuing to dominate in the second.
Mahmood Mahdi top scored for Bahrain with nine goals from 11 attempts.
He was well assisted by Jaffar Mohammed (4 goals), Bilal Askani, Abdulla
Salman and Sayed Shehab Ahmed (1
each).
Bahrain are coached by Khalid Al
Hiddi and the other players in the team
are Fahad Mohammed, Hussain Al Qaidoom, Mohammed Fardan, Jaffar Hassan, Mohammed Ahmed and goalkeepers Jaffar Mohammed and Hussain Al
Qaidoom.
Bahrain will next play hosts Thailand
today at 11am (Bahrain time), the team
they lost 0-2 in a friendly ahead of the
Games.
Apart from handball, Bahrain teams
are competing in football, handball, volleyball, athletics, sailing, swimming, triathlon and weightlifting at these Games.

a personal record in triathlon yesterday
by clocking 59 minutes and 18 seconds
in finishing eighth. The event consisted
of a five-km run, followed by 20-km cycling and ending with a 2.5km swim.
Bahrain’s five-member sailing team
began their training yesterday under Tunisian coach Kasim Ben Jumia ahead of
the first day of sailing today, starting at
10am Bahrain time.
The Bahrainis are taking part in three
classes - Abdulla Janahi and Ebrahim
Duaij in Laser Standard, Mehanna Al
Dossary and Mustafa Janahi in Hobi Cat
and Khalid Shuwaiter in Optimist.
The volleyball championship draw
ceremony took place yesterday and
Bahrain ‘A’ are placed in Group ‘A’
with Japan ‘A’, Thailand ‘A’ and Iran
‘A’ while Bahrain ‘B’ are in Group ‘D’,
with Qatar ‘B’, Iran ‘B’, Turkmenistan
‘B’ and Maldives ‘A’.

today. The winners of each group book
direct berths into the next round while
the runners-up from each group will
face third-placed teams.

completed official registrations

evening.
More than 200 bodybuilders
from over 50 countries completed
registrations. Fuad will compete
in the over 100kg category while
Yagoob is in the 75kg section.

THE UAE team yesterday
became the first to arrive for the
GCC Under-12 and Under-16
Tennis Championship to be held
from tomorrow to Friday at the
Bahrain Tennis Federation courts
in Isa Town .
