Western Power Distribution (WPD),
based at Bristol Airport and
carrying out power line inspections
and maintenance checks across
much of the south west, the
Midlands and South Wales, has
ordered a new EC135P2e helicopter
from Airbus Helicopters UK.
WPD already operates a
fleet of four EC135P1, previously
purchased second hand from ADAC
in Germany. These replaced older
single-engined helicopters that had
been in service for many years,
considerably improving performance
and safety. The successful
introduction of the EC135P1 has
seen the annual flying levels
increase to 2800 flight hours and
created increased demand. The
addition of the EC135P2e will
allow WPD to further increase the
annual activity to 3500 flight hours.
The new aircraft is due to be
delivered in March 2015 following
completion at Airbus Helicopters
UK Oxford facility.

An Iranian company has begun
operating four Robinson R44
helicopters for training and oil pipe
line patrol work, despite US
sanctions on export sales to the
country. The aircraft, purchased
last September through a third
party, first became public on 19
November when one of the R44s
appeared at an air show held at Kish
Island in the Persian Gulf.

The last Sud Aviation SA315B Lama helicopter operating in Papua New Guinea,
P2-PHP, made its final flight with owners Pacific Helicopters on 8 November, carrying
out a maintenance support sortie to a mountain top communications repeater site.
The aircraft has since been grounded as the Turbomeca Artouste powerlant is
out of hours. The owners have no plans to restore the aircraft to flight, due to the cost
of an engine overhaul and the age of the airframe. Lamas have long been a mainstay
of helicopter operations in the mountainous regions of Papua New Guinea, supporting
mining and oil exploration missions, as well as more general utility work.
Columbia Helicopters in Oregon has received the necessary Restricted Category
certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration to begin operations with exUS Army Boeing CH-47D Chinook heavy-weight helicopters. The company has also
received the Certificate of Airworthiness for the first aircraft.
Columbia has purchased eight CH-47Ds from US Army surplus stocks and is
planning to utilise them for firefighting, forestry and construction work. Some may
also be contracted for overseas oil and gas exploration support, relocating rigs and
equipment in otherwise inaccessible areas.

Bell Helicopter has reported much
interest in the Model 505 Jet Ranger
X from potential Chinese operators,
as a result of displaying mockups of
this aircraft and the super medium
twin Model 525 at Airshow China
earlier in November.
One result of promoting the
Jet Ranger X at the event was the
signing of an agreement with
independent Chinese Bell representative Reignwood Investment
for 50 aircraft, adding to an already
established order for 10 Model
505s to be used for travel and
tourism
purposes.
Reignwood
already operates the Bell 206,
407GX and 429 helicopters in
various roles across China.
Meanwhile Bell is also
seeking new industrial partnerships
in China with state-owned companies
for manufacturing and completions
work, to complement its private
maintenance repair agreements. The
company also wants to increase its
local training facilities, as sales of its
helicopters continue to grow. By
early 2015 the manufacturer expects
there to be over 100 of its helicopters
operating in China.
