The annual Inter-House Gala, once again, showcased the swimming talent that is available at Graeme College. Also on
display was the spirit and camaraderie that permeates the school. Participation is the key in events such as this, so well
done to the boys who entered into the spirit of the occasion.

REMOVAL OF BEEHIVE
Graeme College has arranged for a beehive, which has become a danger to the learners, to be removed from
the back of the school (workshop area) at 08h00 on Saturday morning. We urge the Graemian Community
to be aware of the danger.
ACADEMIC
RU MATHS EXPERIENCE
On Friday 20 February the top four mathematicians from each grade (7 – 12) participated in an Inter-Schools’ Maths competition.
All Grahamstown schools participated and the standard was very high. Congratulations to Asher Pearse and Jarah Fluxman who
finished third in their respective categories (Gr 9 & 10 and Gr 11 & 12). Jarah was also awarded a Rhodes University bursary (for
one year’s tuition) for his efforts. Well done, boys!
RHODES UNIVERSITY
On Monday 23 February the Grade 12 learners were informed about the different study options offered by Rhodes University. It is
essential that every boy starts thinking about next year, as he has the responsibility of making wise and necessary decisions that
will impact on his future.
DSG CAREER DAY – Wednesday 4 March
The DSG Career Day will be held on Wednesday 4 March from 13h45 to 17h00. The object of the day will be to expose and
educate pupils regarding the various career opportunities available to them once they leave school. Representatives from different
universities, private colleges, gap year programmes, as well as local businesses and practices, will be available to provide valuable
information.
ENGLISH OLYMPIAD – Tuesday 3 March
The English Olympiad examination will be written in Miss Kenyon’s classroom from 13h30 to 16h30 on Tuesday 3 March. The
participants are reminded to bring their anthologies and dictionaries to the exam. We wish these learners all the best as they
tackle this creative challenge.
CULTURAL
FIRST AID COURSES
The Level 1 First Aid course has been postponed to Saturday 21 & Sunday 22 March, in order to allow more boys to attend. The
Level 3 course will be scheduled for Term 2 (date to follow). This course will take place at St John Ambulance in Hill Street.
Please be aware that the course runs over a full weekend. Learners who are interested in this course need to pay (R350 per
learner) at Reception by 18 March. Any further queries can be directed to Miss Kenyon.
INTERACT STATIONERY DRIVE – Monday 2 March
The InterAct Club will be holding a stationery drive for Child Welfare on Monday 2 March. Learners are reminded to bring any
unused stationery to school.
STEELBAND
On Friday 20 February the Steelband performed at the Sunshine Coast Municipality’s Excellence Awards Ceremony in Port Alfred.
Once again, the band impressed the guests with both their music and presentation. Well done, boys!

Congratulations to Bukhosi Mhlambiso, Juan-Dré de Klerk and Somila Masakane who have qualified for the Sarah Baartman
District team. These three learners will compete in the Eastern Province trials which will be held on Friday 13 & Saturday 14

ROAD MARKINGS – Saturday 28 February
To facilitate traffic flow on the campus, Graeme College has organised for road markings to be painted on the access road
between the swimming pool and Selborne gate on Saturday 28 February. We appeal to parents, staff and the Graemian
Community to heed the painters’ warnings with regards to entering and leaving the campus, especially after 10h00.
MAKANA BRICK NITE RACE – Thursday 5 March
The new-look 2015 MAKANA BRICK NITE RACE takes to Grahamstown streets on the evening of Thursday 5 March. This year
the race will start and finish on Graeme College’s Somerset Field and will be held over a new route.

MOVIE NIGHT – 6 March 2015
The Junior Tennis teams will host a movie night in the Templeton Hall on Friday 6 March. Tickets cost R20 and include a cold
drink, chocolate and juice. The movie is free. The first showing (for learners in Grades 1 – 4) will be from 16h00 to 18h00. The
second showing (Grades 5 – 7) will be from 18h30 to 20h30.
CHILDREN-HELPING-CHILDREN PROJECT – Child Welfare
Thank you very much, Graeme community! Thursday’s Junior School Civvies Day raised over a Thousand Rand towards our
Children-Helping-Children project.
Graeme College has joined other schools in Grahamstown to support Child Welfare in “adopting” boys from Safe Houses. The
senior school learners have taken responsibility for a seven year old boy, while the junior school learners are responsible for a four
year old boy. The idea is that the learners themselves take responsibility to ensure that enough money is raised to pay school fees
(R2 500 each), entertain them one afternoon per term and arrange birthday parties for them. Please support these efforts by
Graemians to reach out to the less fortunate. The two boys were brought to school last Friday afternoon and we got to know them
a bit better.
FOUNDERS’ WEEKEND (13 & 14 MARCH 2015)
Graeme College is preparing to welcome back many Old Graemians and Friends of the School. Every year Graeme College takes
this opportunity to remember why the school was started and to thank everyone for their service – both to the school and to our
country. We look forward to seeing everyone.

NOTICE OF GRAEME COLLEGE SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY ELECTIONS 2015
Governing Body elections take place every three years and we are required, by the Department of Education, to
complete this process by 30 March 2015. Graeme College thanks the current incumbents for their successful and
productive service.
Graeme College will proceed with the following programme:

Notice to parents of Nomination and Election meeting
18 February – 9 March 2015: Nomination forms and the voters roll will be available (until 16h00 on 9 March).
9 March 2015:
Nomination & Election meeting in the Templeton Hall between 17h30 and 18h30.
The regulations state that the Governing Body members must be able to offer and exercise a skill which will benefit
the School.
Mr Warren Schmidt (Principal, Victoria Girls’ High School) will oversee the Graeme College Governing Body
nomination process and, if required, election, as the Education Departmental appointed Electoral Officer.
