Ernest Schnesel was a strong leader with a generous
heart. He believed in hard work, clear thinking, frank talk,
and the importance of balance in our community. He
understood the need for affordable housing. As a result,
Ernest and his wife, Anne, enthusiastically supported the
work of Construct in the Berkshires where they have lived
since 1983.
They were the lead underwriters for “Warm Up the Winter,”
a benefit concert produced by Rabbi Deborah Zecher
to help Construct make sure everyone in our community
had heat for the winter. Ernest was key in honoring
Jack and Priscilla Stern with Priscilla’s Room, a building
at Construct where residents gather for counseling, life
skills classes and community conversations. His kind,
compassionate spirit of giving enriched countless lives
and for that we at Construct, like so many, are deeply
grateful.
Please join us in honoring Ernest with the “The House That
Ernie Built,” a strategy for housing our community.

“The House That Ernie Built”
With a determination to meet the need for affordable housing head on in our community, Construct has begun the development of a new, in-town Great Barrington housing project.
The plan includes a cluster of three buildings with a total of 11 new rental units for families of mixed income. There will be a
community garden, a family picnic area and a play yard. The goal is to build close to Net Zero with an energy efficient building
design, and such features as solar panels.
Inspired by Ernest Schnesel’s commitment to Construct and affordable housing, we are pleased that the funds raised in honoring him will be used to move this project from a “someday…” dream to a small, vibrant housing complex that is a perfect fit for
our southern Berkshire region.
