HRCR WEB SITE
The design of an all-new HRCR website has been underway for some time now and to assist with
the current site’s replacement, the old site at had now been taken off- line and replaced with a
single holding page at www.HRCR.co.uk. Alan Turner, who is in charge of this substantial task on
behalf on HRCR, has said that every endeavour is being made to ensure that the new site will be up
and running as soon as possible.
The 2015 HRCR Mintex ‘Old Stager’ Historic Stage Rally Championship incorporating
the Mini Sport Mini Challenge and The HRCR Imp Cup
Anderson family personal best at Down Ampney.
A warm and sunny day welcomed the 11 crews to Down Ampney for the Red Dragon IT Stages run
by Emcos – Round three of the championship. The event consisted of 8 stages run around the
disused airfield with splits and a water splash for crews to contend with. This made the concrete
slippery in places. Stuart & Jack Anderson in the Vauxhall HS Chevette took top honours of the day,
not only winning Cat three but coming fifteenth overall, their highest ever placing on an event with
total time of 64:40. This is especially rewarding given the quality of the modern vehicles taking part.
Cat One. Bill Douglas/Ian Hamer took victory in their BMW 1800 over John Brooks/Phil Harvey in the
Austin Mini Cooper by 12 seconds overall. Peter Horsburgh/Graham Carter had been setting fastest
stage times until their unfortunate retirement after stage 4 due to mechanical problems.
Cat Two winners Andrew O’Hanlon/Ryan Taylor were showing good pace out on the stages, resulting
with an excellent twenty sixth overall. Paul Kendrick and Clive King’s regular co driver, Anton Bird,
were not far behind with a total of 71:03 after the eight stages. Once again, engine trouble forced
Simon Malins/Colin Tombs in the Vauxhall Firenza to retire, the car going sick after just one stage.
Another disappointment in what is the best presented car at scrutineering.
Cat Three Stuart/Jack Anderson had a very successful day taking the category win saying “the only
issue was over filling the gearbox”. The father and son pairing Lee/Sean Sellars were not so lucky,
with the pair hitting a bale in a chicane on the first stage resulting in damage to the front of the
Triumph PI. Never the less they managed to carry on and compete the day with a determined fortyfirst overall.
Mini Sport Mini Challenge was once again well supported with seven Minis taking part. Andrew
O’Hanlon/Ryan Taylor took the top Mini Challenge position with John Brooks/Phil Harvey 2nd and
Paul Kendrick/Anton Bird taking 3rd. The rest of the Minis gradually fell by the wayside during the day.
Disaster stuck Shane Gamble/Jonny ‘Tad’ Evans on the penultimate stage with the Mini producing a
lot of smoke. Eric Davis/ Russell Joseph had a radiator hose come off on stage six leading to the end
of their rally. Newcomers Peter Elerby/Ian Jackson stopped in stage one after the car stopped
unexpectedly and then refused to start. A sad exit, given all the late nights and hours of work spent
getting the car ready for its first event. Peter Horsburgh/Graham Carter stopped after stage four with
mechanical problems. Hopefully this will all be behind them for the next round of the championship,
which is the televised round of Sweet Lamb Historic Rally on 19th July 2015
The 2015 HRCR Mintex ‘Old Stager’ Historic Stage Rally Championship incorporating the Mini Sport
Mini Cup, consists of six rounds – 1. Rally North Wales, 2. Dixies Historic Challenge, 3. Red Dragon
IT Stages 4. Sweet Lamb Historic Rally, 5. Isle of Man Rally, 6. Cambrian. The Championship will be
open to Category 1, 2, 3 & 4 historic specification cars with separate awards for each category, no
overall winner and will follow the MSA Historic Rules and regulations.

CHESHIRE PLAINS TOUR
The HRCR North West Area will be organising a new event to test the mettle of both navigators and
th
drivers on Saturday 27 June. Designed to encourage those who have been active participants in
scenic tours to move towards competitive rallies, plus seasoned rally crews, the occasion will be in
the form of a tour but with the emphasis on testing the navigator’s skills and driver’s awareness.
There will be no competitive timing and a variety of navigational styles will be used to determine the
route. A number of Controls plus Code Boards will be used to present confirmation that the correct
route has been followed. No awards will be offered other than the satisfaction of fully completing the
correct route as planned by the organisers.
The event is open to all comers, whether HRCR members or not and a Competition Licence is not
required. Classic and interesting cars are welcomed with a maximum entry of 60 cars.
Based mainly in Cheshire, an interesting route of around 160 miles has been planned with the start at
Gawsworth Hall, near Congleton, with lunch and the finish near Holmes Chapel.
An entry fee of £59 for a crew of two includes tea/coffee at the start plus a breakfast roll, route
instructions, and tour plate. An individual buffet lunch is also included in the entry fee.
Regulations and entry forms are available on the website www.cheshireplainstour.co.uk or the Entries

DEAN & THE MARCHES
On a very blustery evening with sunshine and showers at least 23 cars arrived for the annual ‘bonnets
up’ night. This year a new venue, The Royal Lodge Hotel at Symonds Yat East, where we were made
most welcome with excellent food and a good bar. The evening was cool but in between the showers
groups of people wandered around the car park admiring and discussing the relative merits of all the
cars on show. Some hardy souls had arrived and returned home with ‘tops down’. A quick calculation
and in no particular order would indicate that, Austin, Ford, Riley, Morgan, Dellow, Lancia, Austin
Healy, Porsche, Mini, Morris, Sunbeam, Triumph, were all represented.
nd
Our next meeting will be on Monday 22 June, 7.30 pm for a treasure hunt this year deviously
planned by Rob Baldwin and Paul Loveridge. So bring a car full of ‘hunters’ and come and enjoy the
fun.
Meet at the Ross & District Motor Sports Club, Kyrle Street, Ross-on-Wye, HR9 7DB. Members and
friends are as usual all welcome.

LONDON & SURREY
You never know where you will bump into a good rally crew. Basking in the sunshine this past
month at the Pau Historique Motor Racing Festival, your correspondent espied Anne and John Giles
surveying the paddock. They were in the Pyrenees exercising the rally Alfa Romeo for a couple of
weeks, perfecting rally techniques. (We were participating, HRCR stalwart Brian Maile having become
a racing driver in recent years, equipped with a 1956 works Cooper Climax.)
Area activity was also to be found on Classic Rally Tours Honfleur rally, both competitive and present
as ever Geoff Cooper providing results in the blink of an eye.
It has been heart-warming to see Sylvia McCrae bringing "Rodney" the P1800 Volvo back to the field.
Many will remember the exploits of Sylvia and her late sister Barbara Morris in the always immaculate
car. See Old Stager p25.
The Three Castles has beckoned Sylvia and navigator Vicki Holliday as well as Jackie and Andy
Doherty in the hot Frogeye.
June is Area BBQ month and we hope to run a scatter in July. More news direct to members in due
course.

We will gather at the Towcester Mill Brewery on Monday 29 June, for a meeting, at the slightly earlier
time of 7.30pm. Should there be a “topic” for this evening, again David Holmes will email everyone. A
reminder that the brewery which offers a triple one third pint tasting tray of their ales, is in the old
water mill at the end of Chantry Lane in Towcester, just past St. Lawrence Church. There is a large
car park. There is rather a lot of development work going on at the moment so please follow any
diversion signs. For those who need it food is available at the Brave Old Oak in the High Street.
As usual members and friends are welcome. Please contact me should you have any queries on the
group’s activities.
