lowers amino acid leaching by 40% - feed lasts longer
AQUA-PAK™ actually increases consumption rates and is healthier for shrimp,
which means feed lasts longer, overall feed costs are lower, and shrimp producers
can increase production and profits.
Although, the global supply of fishmeal is flat at about 6 mt per year, demand
is rising rapidly. From 2000 to 2010, aquaculture grew 97%, and it increased its
consumption of the world fishmeal supply from 33% to 73%.
Since 2004, fishmeal prices have tripled reaching $1,800/mt and will likely increase.
YOU NEED AN EFFECTIVE FISHMEAL ALTERNATIVE
As aquaculture continues to grow, it will outstrip the world supply of
fishmeal. Shrimp producers need an effective alternative now and shrimp
producers deserve one that is as effective or more effective than
fishmeal. AQUA-PAK™ delivers just that. Fishmeal is a complicated
ingredient, it needs to be replaced with a precision developed
replacer formula.
AQUA-PAK™ Precision Fishmeal Replacer for Shrimp
AQUA-PAK™ GOES WELL BEYOND SIMPLY
REPLACING PROTEIN
Fishmeal contains many nutrients including: balanced source
of essential amino acids, rich source of omega-3 polyunsaturated
fatty acids, phospholipids and cholesterol, vitamins and trace
minerals, phosphorus, attractants such as free amino acids,
nucleotides, and quaternary ammonium compounds, and
bioactive compounds such as testosterone and other hormones
and growth promoters.
Numerous alternate proteins have been used to reduce or replace
fishmeal, but each varies in nutrient composition and digestibility.
A combination of feed ingredients is often a better match for the
nutrient requirements of the target species. For example, proteins
are comprised of 20 amino acids of which 10 are essential in the
diet. Fishmeal protein is rich in the essential amino acids, lysine and
methionine, which are deficient in many alternate proteins.
•
Blood meal is rich in lysine, but deficient in methionine.
•
orn protein is rich in methionine, but deficient in other
C
amino acids.
SUPPLEMENTING WITH SYNTHETIC AMINO ACIDS
A proper balance of amino acids is required to synthesize proteins.
Animal performance is limited by the most deficient amino acid.
Supplemental amino acids such as lysine and methionine are often
used to meet requirements of the target species.
However, unlike fish, shrimp do not consume feeds quickly or as
whole pellets. Shrimp locate the feed by smell, which requires
extended periods of time. They also break the pellets into small
particles before consumption. Significant leaching of amino acids,
vitamins, minerals, and other water soluble nutrients can occur
before consumption.
AQUA-PAK™ PREVENTS AMINO ACID LEACHING
HJ Baker’s AQUA-PAK™ includes supplemental amino acids that are
encapsulated with a heat-stable coating that survives the pelleting
process or extrusion process. Leaching tests indicate that loss of
amino acids and other water-soluble nutrients such as vitamins and
minerals from immersed feeds is reduced from 70% to less than
30% with encapsulation. Feeding trials with encapsulated amino
acids result in significant improvements in growth rate.

THE AQUA-PAK™ STRATEGY TO
INCREASE CONSUMPTION
Marine feed ingredients such as fishmeal, krill meal, and squid
meal contain compounds that act as attractants and palatants for
shrimp and fish. Reduction of marine meals in feeds results
in reduced attractability and palatability.
Research shows that the attractant compounds in marine meals
consist of a complex mixture of free amino acids, nucleotides,
and quaternary ammonium compounds. HJ Baker is developing
a synthetic mixture to reduce the need for attractants from
marine ingredients.
In a series of trials with Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles, the
synthetic feed attractant cocktail was evaluated in comparison
to krill meal, one of the most effective natural attractants.
Quantitative feeding behavior responses indicate a nearly
equivalent response of the synthetic cocktail. This eliminates
the need for scarce supplies of marine meals such as fishmeal,
krill meal, or squid meal as attractants.
THE AQUA-PAK™ STRATEGY
TO PREVENT EARLY MORTALITY
Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) is a serious disease affecting
shrimp farming in Asia and Mexico. It is caused by a strain
of Vibrio parahaemolyticus which colonizes the stomach and
produces a toxin which damages the hepatopancreas. Research
on various feed additives has identified a compound that greatly
reduces shrimp mortality. AQUA-PAK™ contains this additive.
AQUA-PAK™ STRATEGY TO INCREASE SHRIMP
PRODUCER PROFITS
In summary, HJ Baker has developed a feed concentrate which
can completely replace fishmeal in shrimp feeds. AQUA-PAK™
consists of the following components:
•
recision formulated to meet the individual needs
P
of the customer.
•
ncapsulated amino acids and other water soluble
E
nutrients to reduce losses caused by leaching.
•
Attractant compounds to improve feed consumption.
•
Health additive to reduce mortality caused by EMS.
