Alumni banquet deadline
The deadline for the High School
Distinguished Alumni banquet is Oct. 22.
Time’s a-wastin’. The honorees this year
are Robert E. Smith, D.D.S., class of 1955;
Thomas F. “Tim” Monahan, class of 1957;
Charles Edward Harshbarger Jr., Ph.D.,
class of 1959; Capt. Benjamin J. “Jim”
Binford, class of 1959; David J. Ellison,
Ph.D., class of 1959; and Nancy K. Van
Cleave, Ph.D., class of 1971.
The Alumni Association also is seeking
banquet sponsors. Forms and donations
received by Oct. 15 will allow sponsors to
be included in all listings for banquet program booklets, the PowerPoint presentation, website and in the Arcola RecordHerald.

to honor Coach Stiff

WEIU in Charleston plans to
feature Arcola in its television
series, “Our Story.” An informational meeting will be held at
10 a.m. today (Oct. 13) at City
Hall.
“We are looking for individuals
to become a part of a ‘champion
group’ to help spread the word

and recruit storytellers,” said
Ke’an Armstrong of WEIU. “From
previouos ‘Our Story’ communities that have partnered with
WEIU, it has been helpful when
the media, chamber/tourism and
interested folks jump on board to
take part on behalf of their community.”
The meeting is expected to last
about an hour. Information will
include details of the program,
dates and timelines and promotional flyers will be distributed.
The goal is to “showcase and preserve the history” of Arcola and
what makes it amazing.

Potluck for seniors
The next senior potluck dinner will be
held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the
Arcola Center. Sounds delicious.
Fire department
wins grant
Illinois American Water announced that
it is giving more than $48,000 to fire
departments. The Arcola department is
one of 70 to receive a grant this year.
Check your detectors
Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 9-15.
Sounds like a good time to check the batteries in your smoke alarms. If they’re
older than 10 years, replace ’em.
City seeks grants for
local home improvement
The City of Arcola is working with
Coles County Regional Planning toward a
homeowner occupied housing grant. The
city has received funding previously and
was able to rehab two homes. They are
wanting to help out with three homes this
year.
The program can help with roof
replacement, window replacement, insulation, electrical wiring, handicap accessibility and lead paint remediation.
Homeowners applying for grant assistance must meet income eligibility criteria
based on the number of people living in
the house. If you think you might qualify
or if you have questions about the program, contact Kevin McReynolds at Coles

THE ARCOLA POLICE DEPARTMENT held an open house Friday to introduce the community to its three new officers — including Nas,
a 14-month-old Dutch shepherd. Nas is shown with his handler, Officer Nick Suding, during a search demonstration. The new two-legged
officers are Sebastian Rivera, left, of Arcola and Chandler Jaques of Mattoon. Both men graduated in September from the Illinois State
Police Academy, Chief Michael W. Phillips said. Nas and Suding completed the Macon County Sheriff’s K9 Training Academy on Oct. 7. Nas
is certified in narcotics detection, tracking and article searches. The K9 program is made possible with donations from Arcola
