Well, not many… If we start thinking about each day in reverse order we will be lost before we get to the past weekend, but if we try to recall the happiest moments, we will spend days trying to remember all of them we will leave some things out, but they will stock little by little. Why do I draw this conclusion?... simply to reflect on how many memories we have forgotten and how many things that happened will not be recalled again. A good memory makes you feel happy, when you feel a scent and despite the fact that fifteen years have passed, images just come to your mind thanks to your olfactory memory. Thanks to your visual, or spiritual one (although I am not so sure about the latter one because- probably some scientist will have the arguments to bring you back to earth… Darwin and company). But it is not so difficult to reminisce and it has a lot to do with your present mood and the one of the recalled past. The more positive or negative it was, the more it stands out in your memory stock. When we asked each member of Van Van to tell us anecdotes of their time with the band and unforgettable moments with Juan Formell, some wept, while others kept talking with a grin in their faces. This issue is dedicated to all who feed themselves with good memories. Roll with us!!! Cheerful, warm, and above all very sincere, Yoanna Álvarez or Sheena, as she is known in the music industry, is a young woman who cherishes her dreams to live them in her way. If you talk about labels, there is no straitjacket for her. Sheena challenges herself; she tries and experiments with new ways to synthetize herself. This girl from Sancti Spiritus, who wanted to be an actress first, is today a versatile woman who does not believe in prejudices. Unleashed, sexy, spontaneous, and a bit hot, she decided to open herself to VISTAR to talk about her passions. “I am from a family with music transcendence, so from the moment I was born I was surrounded by diverse music genres, but what I really liked was acting. I even took the tests for the Higher Institute of Art (ISA in Spanish), but unfortunately after passing several stages I failed the final one”, expressed Sheena a bit hurt by this experience which represented an obstacle in her career. Having both feet on the ground, Yoanna did not stop to seek art. She understands that the sensitivity for this world is intertwined to her genes and that the universe conspired to put her in the place she deserved. “I always think that life puts things in your way and in that sense, I am lucky person. After this stumble, I signed up for an artistic production course, and shortly after I joined my first band, the quartet Los que llegaron primero, directed by Osmany Espinosa. That was my first huge shock on being on stage, the media and the record studios” says with a grin in her face. Eventually she decided to try on other genres and decided to sing with Anacaona, an www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 9 “ SANDUGA RAN IN MY BLOOD, BUT I HAD TO OWN THE STAGE MORE AGGRESSIVELY “ all-woman team, which helped her to conquer the stage and become a dominant woman on stage, captivating and seductive. “At the beginning, being in Anacaona was a bit difficult because I had to learn many things on the go. Sanduga ran in my blood, but I had to own the stage more aggressively, learn how to play several instruments and improvise. All of that challenged me and gave much strength”, commented Sheena, who launched her solo career two years ago, combining music, photography and audiovisual production. One of the many nicknames she has had was given to her in Anacaona. Due to the passion she radiates in photography, Sheena was “the crime reporter”. No moment could escape her lens. “That passion comes from my father. The peace it offers me complements the volatility of music. When I decided to take a risk with my solo career, I set to do thing that allowed me to have time with my family and enjoy life, because we only have one. I love being on stage, but I very much enjoy looking at people through my camera, and I also feel comfortable when I am being photographed”, friskily confessed the interpreter who shook Cuba a few months ago with the song Hay que darles palo (They have to be smacked) featuring Insurrecto. Now Sheena shares stage with Yuly y Havana C. “This is one the prettiest moments of my life, because I have been able to experiment a lot. I feel complete and happy, which is why I thank everything that happens around me. If you made me choose among the many things I do I would have my back against the wall, because I put a little bit of myself in every step I take”. “WHEN I DECIDED TO TAKE A RISK WITH MY SOLO CAREER, I SET TO DO THING THAT ALLOWED ME TO HAVE TIME WITH MY FAMILY AND ENJOY LIFE, BECAUSE WE ONLY HAVE ONE. I LOVE BEING ON STAGE, BUT I VERY MUCH ENJOY LOOKING AT PEOPLE THROUGH MY CAMERA”. NEWS NEWS FOR MORE INFORMATION WWW.VISTARMAGAZINE.COM QUESTLOVE IN HAVANA IF YEARS AGO THE PRESENCE OF INTERNATIONAL MUSIC HEAVYWEIGHTS IN CUBA WAS RARE, FORTUNATELY THINGS ARE CHANGING, AND DAY BY DAY MORE AND BETTER FOREIGN ARTISTS ARE CONQUERING OUR STAGES. A FEW MONTHS AGO WE HAD THE DEAD DAISIES, BUT ON THIS OCCASION QUESTLOVE, DRUMMER OF THE ACCLAIMED BAND THE ROOTS (CHOSEN BY THE READERS OF ROLLING STONE AS THE EIGHTH BEST DRUMMER OF ALL TIME) DELIGHTED US WITH A SIDE TO HIS ACT THAT IS PERHAPS LESS KNOWN BUT EQUALLY GOOD: AS A DJ. He had two presentations. In the first one it had been announced that he would share stage with the Cuban DJ BJoyce, but Questlove took over the consoles for more than five hours in a session that ended with current Cuban music. It was like 12 May 2015 By: Ana Patricia Marzoa Photos: Alejandro Alfonso a wink to his audience, showing that he had done his homework and knew exactly what the dancers in front of him were listening to. For the second presentation he decided to raise the stakes. He shared stage with two Cubans, the very BJoyce and the producer Edgaro. The word had been spread of the spectacular presentation the night before, so the room was packed with those who had gone purposefully to be amazed. And they were. Not only by the particular playlist and the way the songs were linked, but also by the presence on stage of Josh Klinghoffer, guitar player of Red Hot Chili Peppers, who also gave a statement that filled us with impatience: he expressed that he wants his band to come www.vistarmagazine.com to play to Cuba. Questlove, the man that together with his band has been nominated thirteen times to the Grammys, of which he has won three; who also entertains with his music in the TV show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, seen by millions every weekend; and who has produced for great artists like Elvis Costello, Jay-Z and John Legend… Questlove was in Havana. We hope this is not the last time. We hope he returns and brings his entire band. But more importantly, we hope others follow his example and play for us so they can notice we have been listening to them for years, and now they can let us then, listen to them live. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS WANTS TO PLAY IN CUBA Josh Klinghoffer, guitarist of Red Hot Chili Peppers ascertained in Havana that the famous US rock band wants to offer a concert for the numerous followers they have in the island, a figure that, according to his own words, took him by surprise. “We wanted to come to Cuba for a long time. So when I told everyone that I was coming, they all wanted to come with me. But we will do it soon. Once a week I bring up the subject of coming to play here”, he assured the Cuban press after having accompanied his friend, drummer and DJ, Questlove on stage at F.A.C. www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 13 NEWS In just a few days Yuniesky Gurriel will be part once again of the starting lineup of the Québec Capitales –member team of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball- and some Cubans are already theorizing about his performance. As good mathematicians, they propose figures and strategic solutions. With great expectations and the eagerness to surpass his performance, the eldest Gurriel packs his luggage to share this 100 game season with other fellow Cuban baseball players like Alexei Bell, Ismel Jiménez and Yordan Manduley, rookies in this northern league of great history. Amidst the media fuzz and the physical preparations, VISTAR talked to Yuniesky about his new possibility to shine out of Cuba. “Last year, although we could not win the title, I had a promising performance. I expect the season to be decisive to claim the crown”, expressed Yuniesky in an exclusive. “I have prepared well. This is a complex challenge since the league is quite difficult, where I face AAA and AA players who are well-prepared. From a sporting and human point of view it gives me knowledge and, of course, helps me to improve my game with Industriales”. Though shy, as he describes himself, the truth is Yuniesky Gurriel unfolds himself in the game and utterly enjoys it. Perhaps that is the hook for his new recruitment with the Québec Capitals, another opportunity that, undoubtedly, will take place again as long as baseball keeps being his raison d’etre. 14 May 2015 www.vistarmagazine.com YUNIESKY GURRIEL SETS COURSE FOR CANADA By: Lourdes García Photo: Alejandro Alfonso Photo: Courtesy of the interviewers MARIANA Y LA MAKYNARIA STILL CONTROLLING THE AREA “OUR FIRST ALBUM WAS PURELY DIGITAL, VERY URBAN. WHEN THINGS STARTED TO GET IN GOOD SHAPE EVERYONE WANTED TO BE PART OF IT”. PROMOTION Names can deceive in some cases; in others, they reveal a lot about the person who bears it. That is the case of the band Mariana y la Makynaria, since it describes its music production. About to release the second album Controlando el área (Controlling the area), we talked to Mariana and MC Brea, who have developed together the project from the beginning: “We make true fusion. We work with all types of Cuban music, from top to bottom, like salsa, reggaeton, ballad. But rap is always going to be present, which is our signature”, commented Mariana. Although the project is new, its directors had worked with Soneros de Verdad, members of Buena Vista Social Club. To pay tribute to some of the greats of the latter –who are no longer with us-, this new production dedicates a remix of the song A Buena Vista to them, taken from the movie Música Cubana. The band was created as a friend reunion to record an album, De vuelta aquí (Back here) and then decided to include other musicians and try to move on: “Our first album was purely digital, very urban. When things started to get in good shape everyone wanted to be part of it. The musicians we had been working with wanted to be in it and well, four of us started, now we are thirteen”, told us MC Brea. Every week they release at least one new track for the consideration of the public. “For example, our song Que más quieres de mí (What else do you want from me), recently uploaded to Facebook had been played in three days more than eight thousand times. We immediately tested the songs with the public, to see how they work”. www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 15 NEWS NEWS DESCEMER RECORDS MUSIC FOR DOCUMENTARY The international success of “Bailando” has not made him stop; Descemer continues to work to keep surprising millions of his fans. You can tell the audience is eager for the concert to begin. People are happily humming the music played by the DJ. We enjoy the fashion show by the designer Suárez. But suddenly everybody stands up. They start shouting and whistling. The stage fills with light and color; it seems somehow smaller now. There stand Jacob Forever and El Danny, performing at La Cecilia once again. VISTAR did not miss the show and had an exclusive interview with them, not only about that night´s performance, but also about the 2015 proposals by these boys who are eager to keep on creating and gaining popularity. “We will tour around the country. We will visit Camaguey, Holguin, Santiago, and other provinces where they are already scheduling our performances. After the concert we will be playing at El Capri, where we recently released Alguien como tú (Someone like you), our duet with Mariolis”, said Jacob some minutes before he went on stage and shared his exciting 20 May 2015 www.vistarmagazine.com rhythms with the audience that packed the place. It was precisely for their concert at El Capri that they announced the release of their clip Te voy a regalar La Habana (I will give you Havana), directed by Santana. “But tonight will not be any less special, we will sing our new song Cuando te veas (When you see yourself),” added El Danny, who also talked with us. Of course we will tell you in time, but so far we can assure songs with Orlando Max and with Dominican bachata singer Andy Andy, apart from the song with Mariolis.” With many plans and a strong will to achieve them, these two reggaeton singers are set on offering their fans a memorable 2015. We saw them at La Cecilia yesterday; who can tell where they will be performing at tomorrow? CONCERT EMIR SANTACRUZ IS BACK ON STAGE After he was made to rest, saxophonist, clarinetist, and arranger Emir Santacruz came back to the stage with a moving concert to thank, along with other friends, the miracle of life. He played some songs for the very first time like “Sometimes blues” and “Opus 7” accompanied by Yissy García (drums), Aryan Varona (bass), Héctor Quintana (guitar), and Jesús Pupo (piano), colleagues in his project Espiral. There Photo: Elio Miniello BUENA FE AND ANDRÉS SUÁREZ IN HAVANA If Galician Andrés Suárez thought that he would go unnoticed when he entered the stage of Mella Theater in Havana due to the popularity of his hosts ― Cuban duet Buena Fe― he was surprised at the welcoming applause by the audienc in his second concert in Havana along 22 May 2015 “Nowadays, nobody is so generous to present another musician's songs like this” Andrés Suárez one of “his dearest friends” “Nowadays, nobody is so generous to present another musician's songs like this”, he joked in a night where the three voices joined to sing songs from either of them, among which of course, “Volar sin ti”, single with the collaboration of Israel and www.vistarmagazine.com were also great performances by singers Daymé Arocena and Susel Matos, as well as trombonist Yaondy Argudín, unconditional guests who put on hold their own commitments to be in a concert where everyone excelled. The jazz musician assured us that he is working on his first album, inevitably colored by his influences that range from Cuban and universal roots, with a sentiment of blues and gospel. Surrounded by music and real friends, he preferred to celebrate his full recovery like this before taking on his usual presentations at La Zorra y el Cuervo and Café Miramar. Yoel. Moreover, Andrés moved everyone with “La vi bailar flamenco” (I saw her dancing flamenco) What seemed to be a very upbeat-like show that opened with “Acompáñame” turned into an exchange of intelligent lyrics, a “concert of songs” like Isreal said. On this occasion, for the final challenge the five contestants had to take inspiration from one of the great moments of mixology and recreate a classic drink using the most modern international techniques, a challenge that was won by Vladimir Márquez, barman of the snack bar/restaurant Waoo!, in Havana. 26 May 2015 www.vistarmagazine.com Photos: Alejandro Alfonso “I participated on the last edition and I received the popularity award. Winning the award given by the jury on this occasion, is an enormous recognition, not only to my work but to the one done by so many people who have influenced you to het here: family, friends, coworkers. Cuban bartenders have always had good results internationally, and these events are important to us because we can realize we are in the front-runners, preparing ourselves at the same time, for the arrival of the American customer, who is a very demanding one”. A final balance of the event was given to us by Fátima Ermus, brand manager at Pernod Ricard, who was in charge of the organization. “This edition surpassed my expectations, among other things, because we doubled the public we had anticipated. Disci- pline prevailed among participants, organizers, audience, and was satisfied with the quality of the cocktails that were presented. It was spectacular. I am very happy and we hope to have an even bigger show next year”. www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 27 Are your characters like you? Where do you get your stories from? From life. I like to observe everything. Everything we experiment could be the key to finishing a developing script. That’s how I make the public identify with the characters. I don’t realize it, but those who know me have told me my characters are like me. I think that’s a difficult thing to get rid of. Y ESA #%N&@? THIS SHORT FILM HAS TRAVELED AND CAUSED A FRENZY IN THE ISLAND AND IS SUCCESSFULLY SURFING THE WEB, BUT WITH A VERY DIFFERENT NAME THAN THE ORIGINAL. By: Yeneily García Frames: Courtesy of the interviewer This short film has traveled and caused a frenzy in the Island and is successfully surfing the web, but with a very different name than the original. You possibly have it on your cellphone and have seen it a thousand times. Nevertheless, we are sure that, like us, even if you see it another thousand times you will laugh as if it were the first time. Literally from hand to hand, or from flash memory to flash memory, this short film has traveled and caused a frenzy in the Island and How did you become an animator? As a kid I was always doing comics. Once finished I would show them to my friends and then I would put them away. After, I started doing comics for a magazine called La Picúa. That’s how the characters Dany and his friends (El Club de los Verracos) came to be. 28 May 2015 is successfully surfing the web, but with a very different name than the original. Obviously, Pez Peleador is not as attractive as ¿Y esa pinga? After a few minutes of laughter the first question that pops into our minds is, who made such funny cartoons? Here you have him: Victor Alfonso, an architect from Cienfuegos who left the blueprints to become an animator/director/scriptwriter/dreamer with a bunch of ideas. Animation techniques? I use and reuse the animation cycles. I only animate certain elements such as the mouth and arms, depending on the complexity of the scene. I also use limited animation for funny actions. What you get at the end are “stick figures”. I balance this with audio, verbal humor, and the talent of the www.vistarmagazine.com voices to give emotions to the cartoons. Antecedents? Humor, I love humor: Cartoon Network, Leslie Nielsen’s American satires, Juan Padron’s cartoons, Samurai Cats, Ninja Turtles, Fraggle Rock, and many others that were broadcasted when I was a kid. ! In your projects you direct, write, do the voices, animate… It’s hard work. I would like to count with a good budget, I would produce faster and more. But, since I don’t have a stable budget, I do almost everything myself. That way I focus on what I want to convey with my work. I design the characters myself, their face, their body, their clothes, their way of acting. I always use an idea that I consider to be fresh, that may be attractive or daring; taking into account what the national television lacks, what Cubans want to watch, what they’re lacking, what they’re looking for. Pez peleador… How did you conceive it? It’s an interesting phenomenon. Pez peleador was going to be part of a short film made up of various two minute cartoons made by different directors. The project didn’t come to fruition. Three years later I showed it to a friend and boom!, everyone wants to have it and watch it on their cellphones. I wanted to tell a story where two kids would start talking in a childish way and end up arguing as if they were adults. The reception of the short film has taken me by surprise. I’m seriously considering putting on halt El Club de los Verracos and work on ¿Y esa pinga?2 I LIKE TO OBSERVE EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING WE EXPERIMENT COULD BE THE KEY TO FINISHING A SCRIPT. www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 29 TOP-TEN SALÓN ROJO DEL CAPRI LUNES 2 DE MARZO / 2015 CAPRI’s SALÓN ROJO was invaded by glamour to receive once again the TOP TEN organized by ADRIANO DJ. Remembering Formell a year after his death means for César Pedroso (Pupy) travelling back in the memories they both created for thirty-two years of music and brotherhood. In order to get to know better the humble and patient man, the father and unconditional friend, VISTAR talked to Pupy, an eternal vanvanero who believes in the immortal legacy of Juan Formell. “It is impossible for me to believe that he is gone, because I have so many things in mind. It does not feel real that such a brilliant and virtuous person disappears, with so much to do. For me he will always be alive”, asserted the great Pedroso, breaking the ice in a conversation that, for more than an hour, took us back in 36 May 2015 time. “Juan was part of so much of my life, from a sentimental, economic and familial point of view. When my son and father passed away, he was always there by my side. When I had a heart problem in Italy, he sent me a letter that I still keep, worried about my condition and encouraging me to follow the doctor’s orders. Just so you have an idea, my first refrigerator was a gift from Formell because I did not have the money, and I do not think I ever paid that debt”, tells us this excellent pianist between laughs. Pupy could fill a chest with all the memorable moments. Every story connects to each other through the same protagonist: Juanito. Like the time they got stuck in an elevator in Bulgaria, with nine other people, or when they travelled through Havana in a small van, all www.vistarmagazine.com crammed. The laughter returns, together with the pranks. “Formell was a flirt –said Pupy-. He really loved women and he was always in love. Once, with the Orquesta Revé band, where we started together, we caught a train to Santiago de Cuba and a very pretty girl sat next to him. He did not say anything to her, but he did stare at her and winked. She got off in Holguin and we did not. Two days later, Formell already had a song: “Encuentro y Partida” (Meeting and Parting); recalls the director of the band Los que Son Son. But not all stories bring back a smile. Pupy remembers the day they cheated death just by a few hours since Los Van Van were supposed to return to Cuba in the same plane full of athletes coming from Barbados that exploded in the air. “We had spent the afternoon before playing for them. It was a matinee to celebrate the gold medals they had won. The guys were dancing and we were dancing with them. That night we were told that we had a concert in Panama and that we were supposed to take another flight. The next day, already in Panama, we found out that a Cubana airlines plane had exploded, but it was not until we received a fax that we understood the tragedy. I locked myself in the bathroom and started bumping my head against the wall”, expressed Pupy still hurt by the images. There are so many more experiences in countries like Chile, Mexico, Spain and the United States, but Pupy just focuses on the best of them. Los Van Van are part of my story, my last name and who I am. Juan Formell left his mark on me. I will always be vanvanero”. “Los Van Van are part of my story, my last name and who I am. Juan Formell left his mark on me. I will always be vanvanero”. VAN VAN LOS DE JUAN FORMELL A YEAR LATER By: Ana Patricia Marzoa Photos: Courtesy of Iván Soca Talking about Juan Formell is talking about Cuba. It is a tremendous challenge to try to sum up in words a man who did not follow patterns but still found not once, but hundreds of times the formula to make 38 May 2015 his entire country and a significant part of the world dance. A year ago, The Master stopped aging… a year ago he embarked on a new adventure that transcends life as we know it. But his physical www.vistarmagazine.com absence has done nothing but enhance his legend and reaffirm his genius. VISTAR could not turn a blind eye to the date which is why we approach his living legacy, Van Van, to discover among tears and smiles, stories that have been saved and built from respect but especially from the affection of a band that reflects the love of an entire country. This is how el Tren de la Música Cubana (the Train of Cuban Music) remembers his eternal driver. JUAN CARLOS FORMELL (BASS) It is interesting because from the outside, people see I am the person who plays exactly with his same style. Everyone seems to think that it is easy for me. But it has not been. Mainly because I have my own ideas about music, as a bass player, but something happens when I go on stage: I feel that my dad is with me, and he is the one playing, there is something very deep there. The most beautiful memory I have of him is precisely of the last moments, his happy life in these years he spent with his wife, Yaimara. The greatest gift he gave us was teaching us that we could have a happy life, no matter where you are, how old you are, there is always an opportunity to be happy and you have to seize it, you need to have the ability to accept it and fight for it. And that is the greatest thing I learned from him, the possibility of changing always for the better. IRVING FRONTELA (VIOLIN) The Master did not use to constantly reprimand you. He would cut you some slack but when he said something you would not do that again ever. I remember this time we were playing in Casa de la Música. The thing started about 12 midnight and it was the second time I was late. That day, after the concert was finished, he called me: “tell me Irving, what is going on with you arriving late?”. And well, I started explaining that the cab had not picked me up and in the middle of the explanation he stopped me and said: “You have an entire day to be here early. I need two hours of you, only two hours, and if you know there are some difficulties, well, you have to anticipate them, correct the things that could happen but fulfill what you have to fulfill”. Never again was I late, of course, but that was his way of teaching you. Very gently he would say phrases like that and you could not keep talking or making excuses because he would disarm you with his truth. PEDRO FAJARDO (VIOLIN) He never had that fear of being wrong. When he was wrong, he would do like this with his hands (like playing his bass), searching, and then would keep on playing. Sometimes you make a mistake and go home punishing yourself in your head. But I learned with him that you can be wrong but you still have tomorrow to make amends, if you are a professional you study and you try to do it better tomorrow. That was him, a musician, a genius, yes, but above all he was human, human. He is a father to me. I feel it that way. When my dad passed away Formell told me: “Pedro, man up, because it is tough losing a father, but here you have another father”. That was his phrase and unfortunately none of my two fathers are here now. They are not physically here, but I always keep them alive. www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 39 ©Marcel Fernández EL LELE (SINGER) ÁLVARO COLLADO (TROMBONE) ©Marcel Fernández MANDY CANTERO (SINGER) YOEL CUESTA (CONGAS) Ever since I entered the band they call me Salchicha (Sausage), because el Lele put me that name so everyone calls me that, even Formell. So in my first tour in Europe I fell sick. I felt so bad that they had to take me off stage due to an excruciating pain in my kidneys. Formell had not gone to that tour. So when we got here, I see him at the airport going around asking: “Guys, where is Salchi?” Where is Salchicha, huh?”. And he came to where I was and hugged me and started asking how I felt. It shocked me that he had been aware of everything and his concern despite the distance touched me. 40 May 2015 JORGE LELIEBRE (FLUTE) I have the good fortune of having worked with him for so much time, of being guided in many things, even when he was not his intention to do it. He always asked for everyone’s opinions. Work was always done collectively, and he gave utmost priority to that. www.vistarmagazine.com There are so many anecdotes of Juan. But I remember one that was unfortunately the last time we laughed at one of his doings. We were rehearsing in Abdala, we started to play and a roadie started singing. Juan was sitting in the back, looking at him and laughing, letting him have a go at it until he suddenly said, like this, highlighting every word: “Hey, listen carefully to what I am about to say, I do not want to see you getting on my stage when I am not here because everyone tells me everything”. And the roadie responded: “Nah, master, I am into performing arts and entertainment, singing is just an extra for me”. He stood like this for a moment, in silence, and said: “You know what you are? You are a phony” and everyone started laughing. That was Formell. When he was going to say something harsh, he would not even consider swearing, he would just say: “you are a phony”, and we would laugh so hard because you had to see the way he would say it. He was very suspicious, the tone he used would make you laugh but still would impose respect. So many things happened to us on tour, experiences that were tough but that brought us closer. There was this time we went to Colombia and we were eight hours on a river, with instruments and everything because there was no way to get there by land. We were supposed to play in the middle of nowhere and we got there lightheaded, but we got there. On another time we travelled to the carnivals of Veracruz and we had to take the trip boarding the Guanajuato, a Mexican army ship that, well, was around fifty years old. We were not alone, Guaracheros de Regla, Tambores de Bejucal, the Parisien club show, you know, many people together. In the middle of the trip a terrible storm hit us, and wow, just like what you have watched in cartoons, the ship goes up and down with the waves… until the engine died. Everyone started to put on the lifesavers except for a girl who went to the top of the ship to pray to Yemayá to take us out of it. And bless our souls we hit land! But many good things happened to us on tour, not only because of the audience, but also because we shared stage with some of the greats like Chick Corea, Bobby McFerrin, John Father, Al Jarreau with his Big Band, very joyful moments, moments in which you would drop the instruments and everything just to take a closer look at them. EDMUNDO PINA (TROMBONE) Once we went to a jazz festival in Curacao. To get there we had to go to Venezuela and then take another plane. We got there in time and ready to take the flight and we landed safely in Curacao without any problems. But every time we landed Juan would ask about everyone. And that is when he noticed that two members were missing and the thing is that when we left Venezuela they had taken the wrong plane to Santa Lucia. He then started asking and talking and calling people. They finally came to Curacao when we were almost about to begin, but well, they got there. When my kids were born, all three, Juan was always the first one at the hospital. And when he died, my wife said that she would not have any more kids, not only because we had decided on that, but also because the flowers that he used to take would not be there anymore. He is a grandfather to my kids, he grew fond of them. Juan had some stories… he was very amusing. He could tell you the same story a thousand times, but always, always made you laugh. One of the stories that would kill me laughing was the following. He said that once they went to a party with a friend of his that was a teaser like him. So they were there and suddenly a huge German shepherd comes out of nowhere and starts messing with everyone. It was a playful dog who was messing everyone’s clothes, and licking them and well, they started to complain until the dog was locked away. But then, after two minutes, a kid shows up with boxing gloves hitting everyone, whether they were standing or walking he would just hit them with the gloves. Then when he could not take it any longer his friend said: “hey, either you lock the dog or this fool, but I cannot deal with both of them”. And then, well just imagine, everyone laughing, but they obviously had to leave. I do not know how many times Juan told me that story, but I would always end up almost choking after laughing so much with the peculiar way he had to tell that story. www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 41 ©Marcel Fernández SAMUEL FORMELL (DRUMMER AND LEADER) ROBERTÓN (SINGER) Juan gave me my name. I went to see him when I was about to start in the band and he asked me my name. When I said Roberto he responded: “what?! Have you not seen your body? You have to be Robertón”. And from that moment on, I was always Robertón. Nobody calls me Roberto anymore, everyone knows me by the name he gave me. What happens now? That I look to the right, look to the left and he is not there, but he is, at the same time. It is like the player who is going to throw the ball to first base and no one is there, even when there has been always the same person there. And that is why we have to move on, with that memory, because wherever he is, he will be with us. 42 May 2015 EFRAÍN CHIBÁS, “PACHO” (PIANO) I am twenty-five and just imagine, I know him since I was eight or nine because his daughter Paloma and I studied together. Due to this friendship we would have some parties in our group and some of those were done in his house. I lived very far from him and it is a really nice memory I have that no matter how late it was, and being him a celebrity, he would always find the time to take me home after the party was over. Those were the opportunities I took advantage of to have the best conversations I remember, where we talked a lot about music and I realized how much he enjoyed that although I was a teenager we would be dead serious in our talks. www.vistarmagazine.com We had many beautiful father-son moments. There was much affection. We would actually say hello to each other with a kiss in the mouth, and I do not think there is a better father that him, more profound or communicative, and that would teach you while he was still breathing how to lead Van Van. Without him I would not be able to be anyone or do anything now. He was always laughing and I have tons of memories of that. I would tease him, I loved to tease him, pinch him, tickle him, bite him or lay down next to him. Anything like that to make him lose his temper. He would say: “don’t be cheeky that you are too old for that”, and he would laugh, he would always laugh. I have been writing a song for him, not as a hit or anything like that, just for all of those who loved him, who met him. And it goes: “Cuando mi padre murió la música lloró / Cuando mi padre murió la música también cantó (When my father died music cried / when my father died music also sang” and that is how it is, that is how I feel it. SAMUEL AND JUAN FORMELL Photo: Iván Soca JUAN FORMELL ONE YEAR OLD IVÁN SOCA AND FORMELL IVÁN SOCA (FOTÓGRAFO) I really came to Van Van as part of a production crew that was working on a film about the band, but I feel that from the beginning he saw in me a person that could and wanted to preserve what they were doing. Formell was perfectly clear that he was the one making history, but he was also convinced that I was the one keeping his memoirs. He had many small gestures outside of work and he gave me this picture of when he turned one. This May 1st the picture has a double reading, it is his first year in his eternal life and here is the picture of his first year in his past life, the life in which we met him. www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 43 NOVEL ARTIST “I´VE WRITTEN ALL THE SONGS I SING. THAT´S THE WAY I EXPRESS MYSELF. I WROTE MY FIRST SONG WHEN I WAS SIXTEEN AND I HAVEN´T STOPPED EVER SINCE.” MAGDA MUSIC IS MY WAY By: Ana Patricia Marzoa For Magda, music has no frontiers; there is nothing impossible to do or achieve in it (or for it). It is not about genres, it is about adventures. That is why this young lady feels comfortable working with styles as different from each other as lyric singing (which she studies at the Higher Institute of Arts) and salsa, to mention only two of them. She is equally passionate about these two tendencies despite their differences: “I like lyric singing because that´s what I study and I get to see how complex it is, involving a great artistic and intellectual value. And I love folk music; I see it as a 44 May 2015 Photo: Alejandro Alfonso way to enjoy and be myself.” In spite of being only nineteen, she already writes and records songs. “I´ve written all the songs I sing. That´s the way I express myself. I wrote my first song when I was sixteen and I haven´t stopped ever since. My album is an independent production that we are recording in Holguín. It will include many genres like salsa, ballade, pop, and some songs closer to ballad.” She has no preference as to the format of her performances; you can see her accompanied by a DJ or an original jazz trio, which is the expression of the www.vistarmagazine.com self-confidence that she reflects in every song. If you have listened to her, you will be surprised to know that it was through acting and not music that she made her first steps in arts. She writes short stories and will become the presenter of a TV program that will soon be on air. However, the most important thing for her is definitely music. In spite of her still short career, Magda performs every Saturday in her native Holguín at 1720 accompanied by DJ Alexis 6. Hopefully, we will soon be lucky enough to watch her perform here in Havana. THE CURIOSITY TO LIVE INSPIRES ME By: Lourdes García Photo: Alejandro Alfonso You can find him in any street of Havana, walking among the people, with his backpack on his shoulder and an unhurried walk. If you ask him, he would say his looking for locations for his next film, but the truth is that Fernando Perez needs to be in constant touch with today’s Cuba to nourish and tell stories never explored before. The VISTAR team had a pending conversation with this film director, especially if taken into account that his name has returned to the big screen in the last months. “La Pared de las Palabras is the continuity and evolution of my life, because I refuse to be static. That’s why every film I make has a different approach, an obstacle to overcome”, assured the creator of Madagascar, Clandestinos and Suite Habana. “El Profe”, as the tie him to any Project, he assures that curiosity and passion are his inspiration. “Life is about challenging oneself, otherwise it would be only one day after another” , said this inhabitant of Havana who considers music as the finest of arts. Maybe that’s the reason why one of his latest achievements has been the making of the video clip Cancion Facil where he combined Marta Valdes and Haydee Milanes. “I’m very attracted to the clip as a form of “To be near young people is a way of enriching my way of seeing things”. students from FAMCA call him, advocates for the independent art that’s brewing in the younger generations and chooses not to be monotonous in order to “ foster self-renovation and to find unknown paths. That’s why I chose to do La Pared de las Palabras because it was a topic that could be looked at from different perspectives, although I never thought of making a movie about disabilities and the psychiatric institutions”. As to the mysteries that expression, because in a short period of time you have to tell a story, express a feeling or follow the beat of a song. As a new language I wanted to try, to feel part of it. Always looking for new experiences, he will also participate in the XII Havana Biennial, in a performance with the artists Leafar Delgado and Yoisel Torres, in a tribute to the American John Cage. To be near young people is a way of enriching my way of seeing things. Watching them I recall my youthregarding age, because I feel young at heart- and that attitude towards life that young people have is something I would never want to lose; the curiosity to live inspires me” With a few minutes to spare, we asked him if his work evolves along with Cuba. “That’s a really good question” he said. “I make films to communicate. Everything I’ve made has evolved with reality, because even though one remains the same, reality and values change. That’s why I accepted an interview with VISTAR, because it’s a controversial magazine that has a profile that had disappeared in Cuba. You are facing a category that surprises for being excluded. I try to live in today’s Cuba, the one that nourishes me to keep making films”, he said at the end. Minutes later he was lost in the crowd in 23rd Street, to deeply explore the country that is present in every project. After talking for an hour, we understood the mysteries of his name. Fernando Pérez is simply and island inside the Cuba he never abandons. www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 47 FILM INDUSTRY YOUNG FILMMAKER AWARDS 2015 Photo: Courtesy of Alan González The French producer Séverine Roinssard shared her experiences on film project management and how to raise funds for the making. For a month –May 22nd to June 22nd- Havana will become a space where art will converse with the city and its people, and the work of hundreds of artists, scientists, musicians, sociologists, anthropologists and intellectuals will become part of the geography of magical and surreal city. To reaffirm that elitism and closed conceptions have no place in an event like this, apart from 54 May 2015 the usual venues like the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, the Art Higher Institute, La Cabaña and el Malecón, the Biennial will reach Casablanca and some neighborhoods in Central Havana and Old Havana that will see their routines changed by creators who plan to revitalize community spaces and even paint some facades. The programs has something for every taste: exhibitions, concerts, theoretical sessions and www.vistarmagazine.com www.vistarmagazine.com Sponsored by: Copperbridge Foundation WELCOME TO THE LARGEST GALLERY OF THE WORLD workshops. The highest expectations are, however, on the side exhibition, which will include a collective project in the Pabellón Cuba entitled “Between, inside, outside”, a project that will engage Cuban young creators and artists living currently in the US who have Cuban ancestry, in a dialogue. In the same venue will take place the second edition of the talk of the town, “Detrás del muro” (Behind the wall), a collection of installations placed in el Malecón that, based on what Juan Delgado, its curator, said to the magazine, will return this year with a larger amount of pieces, among which there will be an ice rink –yes, you are right!-, a landing strip, a giant blue cube, a light tree, a beach with little umbrellas and sand in the middle of the wall, and a garden of barbed wire. As part of Havana´s 12th Biennial, we will enjoy the presentation of INSOMNIA, a project that involves installation and performance and consists in taking over a house to turn a home into a public gallery. Artist Pablo Rosendo will be living with his girlfriend, artist Claudia Tomás, in a house in Vedado, at 367, 26th Avenue, between 23rd and 25th. The couple will turn this temporary place for them into a personalsetting decorated with the plastic work produced by him using recycled material like CD and cassette boxes modified through a technique developed by Rosendo involving plasticine. The artist´s creation process will be nonstop, and it will be openly exhibited for a month together with the performance by the actress, who will be presenting a staging directed by MarticaMinipunto of Vincent Van Gogh´s letters to his brother Theo. Designers, DJs, photographers, among other artists will be invited to build this collective creation experience that will combine the private and the public. May 2015 55 PHOTOGRAPHY ALFREDO SARABIA JR. STORY TOLD THROUGH A LENS By: Yeneily García It could seem risky to embark on an adventure in the same profession in which your father raised the bar so high and on top of that, with the same name, but whoever sees his work can identify in Alfredo Sarabia Jr. an individual voice, an eagerness in setting his own course without ignoring his heritage, “because ever since he began he saw in his dad his first teacher”. “Photography has been with me almost from the moment I came to this world. My story has always been through a lens. I used to go out a lot with my dad to take pictures, and 58 May 2015 it started to become a habit to communicate through images”. He was first struck in awe at home. Then, in the San Alejandro Academy the cameras helped him to record installations, “until the point that I could not run from it anymore and it became the core of my work, to the extent that I am now a Photography teacher in the Art Higher Institute”. Attracted by the concept of duality and the existence of opposites, young Sarabia says he does not believe so much in the means to do something, but in the end, the goal he has www.vistarmagazine.com “PHOTOGRAPHY HAS BEEN WITH ME ALMOST FROM THE MOMENT I CAME TO THIS WORLD. MY STORY HAS ALWAYS BEEN THROUGH A LENS” Substitute #6 He lives abroad but this is his paradise when he creates. “I do not usually talk about categories like artistic, documentary, or journalistic photography. I prefer the qualifier hunted or constructed. My work is between those”, expressed Alfredo. He also explained that he leans towards not manipulating his shots, “first because I come from the school of films, and second, because I like to establish some sort of credibility so that people know beforehand that what they are going to see is real”. Convinced that an idea is what dictates the way in which you work, Alfredo is now focused on creating a piece that resembles more a sculpture than a traditional photo. He uses original resources such as the frames he uses for his photos to modify and integrate them to the piece. The best part of everything? That if you want to see the outcome of this new creative phase, you can head to Estudios 50 during Havana’s Biennial and find “No es lo que ves”, a four-artist expo which Sarabia shares with Che Serguera, and where he will exhibit a vast part of his creation. People were dumbstruck when they listened to our mixing of New Orleans and Benny Moré. People were like “Wow!” What’s with this UFO that has just landed? But then they got used to us. “It was amazing for us”, says Rey Rodríguez, guitar player and one of the singers in the band. Héctor Agüero Lauten (director, musical producer, keyboards, and guitar), Sol Ruiz (vocals and ukulele) and José Luis González, www.vistarmagazine.com Jochi (trumpet and percussion), complete this group of friends that already shared their nationalities, influences, and interests and decided that the best was to join together to succeed. “Héctor was already famous in the audiovisual world. He had won a Goya award for El Truco del Manco soundtrack. Before leaving Cuba, I used to make music for Hubert de Blanck theater company. In Madrid we found Sol and Jochi and decided to join together in a we-arebuddies-so-let´s-do-somethingtogether kind of thing.” Las cosas de la vida (Life´s Ways), their first album, allowed them, through crowd funding, to take their music “In Madrid we found Sol and Jochi and decided to join together in a weare-buddies-so-let´s-do-somethingtogether kind of thing” to the United States and strengthen in Spain, besides being chosen to accompany the version of A Streetcar Named Desire by El Ingenio Teatro in Miami. And now is the turn for Cuban people. During their visit to the Island to record their second album, El Manicomio (The Insane Asylum), Picadillo will let us taste their original proposal which reminds us at the same time of musicians and sounds that we have heard before, a mixing of elements from jazz, blues, and the Cuban key. “On May 2nd and 8th we will be playing at El Sauce. It will be our first time. We have been looking forward to it since we played at FAC six months ago. I think that the connection with the audience will come naturally.” www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 61 Dance Theatre AND HAVANA DANCED THE THEATRICAL IMPULSE OF LITORAL By: Martica Minipunto The stage of the Historic Center of Old Havana was not the same for five days. Its cobblestone alleys, square, parks, and museums danced along with the participants of the 20th edition of the International Dance Festival in Urban Landscapes: Old Havana, city in motion. With participants from eleven countries, the event used natural contexts and settings to bring dance and people closer together, beyond the existing conventional spaces for this performing art. This was the time for groundbreaking proposals within the contemporary dance panorama, which does not mean that each choreography had a modern language; dance accommodates all styles whether classic, contemporary, folklore, flamenco, traditional or fusion. This way, dance companies like Retazos host of the festival, Rosario Cárdenas, Danza Contemporánea de Cuba (Contemporary Dance of Cuba), Danza del Alma de Villa Clara (Soul Dance from Villa Clara), Danza Espiritual de Matanzas (Spiritual Dance from Matanzas), Company E and Bistoury Company from the United States, Klaus Danza, and Kalúa Company from Colombia, among others came together. 62 May 2015 Photo: Ana Patricia Marzoa By: José Ernesto G. Mosquera A CHRYSALIS IN RAGS Chrysalis was the opening play of the company Danza Teatro Retazos (Dance and Theater Company “Rags”) for the street festival. The play returns to the topic of human relationships through the metaphor of the animals, the wild, and the incomprehensible. It is not about the movement used as a mere www.vistarmagazine.com aesthetic support. Each step conveys intentions leading toward the polemic existence of humans beings in relation to the surroundings they inhabit. There are no visible faces, but pantomime and symbols. Dancing gives in to the voiceless theater impulse, loneliness, and gloomy melancholy the audience always expects to see from Retazos. The play Litoral has been on at Bertolt Brecht in April. This play constitutes Canadian-Lebanese Wajdi Mouawad's debut in Cuba, with LUDI THEATER, a group directed by Miguel Abreu. The production sticks to the complexities, and drama ups and downs of the original. With a numerous cast, Litoral unfolds through young actors. Among them, the performances of Andros Perugorría, Giselle González, Yoelvis Lobaina, Francisco López and Grisell de Las Nieves stand out. They constantly evoke situations from the text, and more often than not, address their topics, transformations, and harshness from the perspective of understanding. Regarding staging, the dramatic version was weak. In order to tell the story of Wilfrid, a more critical look to the dual structure at the text (fiction/ reality, cinema/theater, life/ death) was missing which affected the atmosphere due to some explanatory events particularly at the beginning. Nonetheless, scenography narrates from an installing operational capacity. Costume design plays with the ambiguous, the extraordinary, and the closeness being an ideal part of the above-mentioned dual structure of the text. Let Litoral serve to share the burden of a journey, apparently endless, with a corpse (the very same father) like the journey of a contemporary hero. The quest for the ideal burial place becomes a metaphor for the reinvention of an identity. A possible story for the big screen. A theatrical impulse for LUDI THEATER. www.vistarmagazine.com May 2015 63 CUBAN CHARTS TOP ALBUMS BY: CUBAMUSIC.COM TOP SINGLES 1 Los Van Van 2 Leoni Torres feat Kelvis Ochoa & Alexander Abreu LA MODA (KERATINA) EGREM TOP TROVA & FUSION 1 ES TU MIRADA Gente D' Zona (GDZ) feat Pitbull PIENSA (DILE LA VERDAD) Mr 305 Records Gente D’ Zona leads the Top Cuban Artists, +401 221 likes on Facebook and 3 923 tweets, a significant part of the industry for Spotify (Tropical Segment 0.5136%) and last.fm (+128 841 scrobblings), making history for Billboard with a record for most weeks for a single at number one, with “Bailando”. 4 2 3 Around The Music 5 LA BAMBINA Independant 6 Enrique Álvarez y su Charanga Latina ¿QUÉ VAMOS A HACER?
