Dreams Do Come True - September 11, 2011
Save the date for a fabulous day of live entertainment, food, drinks, auctions, raffles, games and
more! The Family Fest brings together thousands of Misericordia’s family members, friends and
neighbors for a fun and exciting day that has turned into our largest fundraising event.
Misericordia’s Family Festival takes place 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, on
Misericordia’s campus at 6300 N. Ridge Avenue in Chicago. (Corner of Ridge and Devon)
Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children and seniors. Discounted tickets are available through
August 20. Please use the enclosed ticket ordering form or call 773-273-2766 for more
information. *S&C Electric is generously providing free parking for fest-goers, which can be
accessed off Devon Avenue, just east of Ridge. A trolley to the fairgrounds will be available.

Dear Friends,
Recently, a Federal Government Agency, funded by
taxpayers’ money, has publicly stated that a priority of theirs
is to close all congregate facilities for persons with
developmental disabilities. Whether they would admit it or
not, this would include Misericordia, the Heart of Mercy
Center.
As any of you who have taken the tour of Misericordia know,
the response is always that we should be the “model” for the
entire country. Our philosophy is that we are not the only
way to share life with persons with disabilities, but a very
legitimate way. One great advantage which is ours is that we provide a full continuum of care.
We have Mc Auley Skilled Nursing Home for the profoundly disabled, medically involved persons and seven
homes in the neighborhood for the most able-bodied residents. There are twenty other residential areas available
on the campus serving the needs of non-ambulatory as well as ambulatory persons of varied cognitive skills.
Perhaps, our greatest asset is our 31 acre, beautiful campus, where most of the residential houses are located. This
includes a chapel, community center, residents’ social center, greenhouse and gardens, an aquatic center with a
fitness room, a day program building, gymnasium, laundry, kitchen, baking and packaging area, an art center, and
our Greenhouse Inn Restaurant. The campus also serves 150 families in an outreach program for persons living in
their own homes.
When you come to our campus, you are coming to the “home” of most of our residents. Even for those who live
in our neighborhood homes, the campus is truly the center of their lives. Some do have outside employment but
this is usually for 2 or 3 days a week and for 2 or 3 hours. Outside employment is very difficult to find especially
in our present economy. We must create our own jobs and we do this by utilizing the resources of our campus.
Our 600 residents (mostly adults) live good lives. They are happy people who know they are loved and
challenged, each according to their unique potential. Their families are grateful, for all any parent wants is for
their child (disabled or not) to be living a fulfilled life surrounded by people who respect them as unique persons.
We all recognize that our children/adults can’t create a good world for themselves but once it is theirs, they
become the gift givers.
At Misericordia, we all feel privileged to be able to share life with such beautiful people as our residents. They
teach us daily that in their weakness, they are strong. How many of us could/would accept the limitations which
are theirs and still rejoice in the goodness of our world? They call us forth, on a daily basis, to be more loving and
compassionate.
How blessed we are that God has permitted all of us at Misericordia to be so called! Every single day we know
our Society is a better place because there is a home called “Misericordia”. And also we know that you, our
family and friends, would shout to the mountaintop if any government agency tried to close our home. Let’s
remind them they are “servants of the people” and not autocratic entities unto themselves. Thank you and God

Irish American Hall of Fame
The mission of the Irish American Hall of Fame is to
recognize and honor the outstanding contributions of Irish
Americans to society in the areas of Arts & Humanities,
Business & Industry, Public Service, Sports, Religion,
Education and Science. A national body of distinguished
individuals representing academia, government and Irishaffiliated organizations from around the United States voted
on the candidates in December 2010 and January 2011.Our
very own Sister Rosemary Connelly was chosen in the field
of Religion from more than 300 nominees received from
around the world.
Winners were inducted into the Irish American Hall of
Fame at a Black Tie Awards Gala on Saturday, May 14,
2011 at the Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 North
Knox Avenue, Chicago, IL 60630.

Sweet Home Chicago...City of the Big Shoulders
"Da Mare" Richard M. Daley, longest serving mayor in Chicago history, spoke to
more than 300 people including a plethora of Illinois elected officials, who had
gathered at The Jean Marie Ryan Center at Misericordia in January. Daley shared
his experiences at the helm of the great city of Chicago. From obstacles that the
city faces to the people who make the city great, Daley’s message was one of hope
and love for Chicago. Daley followed a few other “big guys” here in Chicago self-appointed “Mayor” of Misericordia, Terry Morrissey, President of the City
Club of Chicago, Jay Doherty, and Sister Rosemary Connelly who spoke about the
challenges that face Misericordia and people with developmental disabilities: the
difficulty of being unable to reach out to the more than 500 people waiting for
placement at Misericordia; the importance of providing choice and funding for a
full continuum of care and services; the foresight to consider the future needs of people with disabilities as they age. Most of all,
she expressed her gratitude that Misericordia is incredibly blessed to have the love and support of so many good people. Pictured

Women’s Auxiliary take the checkered flag in style!
Over 10,000 people attended the First Look for Charity in February, where eighteen area
charities benefited from the high-class sneak-peek at the Chicago Auto Show. After the
Auto Show, the Auxiliary switched gears and attention to their Spring Luncheon and
Fashion Show in March at the Palmer House where Saks Fifth Avenue presented the
hottest wear for 2011. The entertainment on the catwalk was complimented by an
inspirational performance from David Nerychel and the Misericordia Heartbreakers. The
ladies of the Auxiliary raised over $450,000 from both events. Pictured top left: Saks Fifth

To celebrate March Madness, the
Misericordia Women’s League
hosted their 15th annual
fundraiser at the Chicago Marriot
Southwest in Burr Ridge. Over
450 people enjoyed a casual
evening that included a dinner of
stadium worthy fare, live and
silent auctions, plenty of games, a
performance by the Chicago
Bulls’ cheerleading squad The Loveables, and best of all, five GIANT televisions
showing the March Madness Collegiate Basketball Tournament! The League, led by
President Eileen Seyfarth and event co-chairs Elizabeth Pyle and Sue Driscoll, raised an
amazing $250,000 for Misericordia. Thank you to the entire League for a SLAM

In January, six students from Faith Hope and Charity
Elementary School embarked on a three-week art project
with the artists at Misericordia. The project, led by
Misericordia Instructor Kurt Fondriest, ATR, focused on the life and work of Georgia O’Keeffe. “Together, we created two
beautiful works of art, learned about an important person in history and about each other!” said Fondriest.
Dinner with THE FAMILY...

June 25 for the annual Misericordia Family Association Dinner Dance!
Enjoy a wonderful evening with over 2,500 guests at the event that
features cocktails, a sit-down dinner, exciting live and silent auctions
and dancing. Also, you will have an opportunity to take part in “The
Giving Tree” -- donors can choose from a wish list of items requested
by the residents to help furnish their homes.

Despite the gloomy weather...yes, snow in
April....the Concert for Misericordia “Opera and
Show Tunes Greatest Hits” was a reSOUNDing
success! The concert, held April 16 in the Jean
Marie Ryan Center at Misericordia, featured the
wonderfully talented Stephany Prodromos
(Soprano), Lexy Prodromos (Soprano) and
Christian Ketter (Tenor) performing incredible
operatic arias by Puccini, Gounod, Delibes,
Mozart and Donizetti and show-tunes from West
Side Story, Porgy and Bess and 42nd Street! A special guest appearance by the Misericordia Heartbreakers rounded out a

Brookfield Zoo brings a little WILD to Misericordia!
It’s not everyday a Rhino travels to the north side of Chicago...but thanks to Matthew Mayer
and the Brookfield Zoo that is exactly what happened when they donated a ceramic rhino to
be painted by the artists at Misericordia. “It is a wonderful opportunity for us to study the
Rhino,” said Kurt Fondriest, Art Therapist. “We chose to paint a scene from the Serengeti to
reflect all that we had learned.” To bring the project full circle, the residents paid a visit to
the rhinos who live at Brookfield Zoo. As for the Serengeti Rhino, he will be making his

Bequests & Annuities
To those friends who wish to help assure the continuation and growth of Misericordia by mentioning Misericordia in your will,
the following general form is suggested: “I give, devise, bequeath to Misericordia Home, an Illinois not-for-profit organization
located at 6300 N. Ridge, Chicago Illinois, the sum of $ ___________ (or specifically described property).” If you decide to

page at misericordia.org. Additionally, gift annuities will give you an opportunity to receive an annual fixed income for the
rest of your life, as well as possible tax deduction in the year the gift is made. Gift annuities require a gift of $5,000 or more
and the donor must be at least 65 years of age.

racial, and socio-economic backgrounds. A not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization, Misericordia is operated by the Sisters of Mercy under the
