Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
In the Gospel today we are told that Jesus looked upon the scene with pity. Scripture
abounds with examples of pity. When we look carefully at the account given to us today we
see three actions, movements of Jesus. First he goes to the widow and tells her not to
weep. Most of us would lend a shoulder and let her weep. The Son of Mercy sees beyond
the immediate and calls her to something deeper. Jesus does allow weeping when it serves
as an effective way to conversion of heart (cf. Lk 7:38; Lk 22:62).
Jesus knows that weeping can lead to discouragement and despair. He knows that his
father, our Father, is a god of life — in fact is Life! He is mercifully pointing her to the triumph of Life in each life,
even those who have died to this life.
Jesus then touches the coffin — a sign of redemption. This would have been a scandalous act in Jesus’ time.
One did not come in contact with dead bodies, but touch the body he does. Jesus touches what is dead in us and
breaths Life back into our inner self. Every sacrament has the element of touch for it is a direct contact with Jesus.
Finally Jesus bids the man to rise and gives him back to his mother. This is a foreshadowing of Jesus’ action
from the cross when he gives to John [symbolizing all mankind] to Mary. Jesus reminds us of her motherhood and
care for all people. No matter how “dead” we may feel, Jesus approaches us and offers new life through the
intercession of Mary.

An update: Our forensic engineers are near the end of their study of the condition of the church building and
will soon write their report and recommendations for us to move forward. At that point our Building and Grounds
Team will help set the plan to implement the recommendations. It is difficult at this time to say exactly what steps
we need to take. The cost of this work will be significant but I cannot give you an estimate because we have not
decided what needs to be done. We will put the work out for bids.
I hope that any of our parishioners who do construction, technical, redecorating, etc. work would bid on a
particular part of the project. I operate on the policy that if a parishioner is competent, qualified and presents a
competitive bid, they should get the work. I would rather pay a family member than a stranger. So please watch
for future information about these projects.
I rely on our parish’s teams and Councils. I studied theology and even after an explanation (actually several) I
don’t think I could tell just what a piezometer does. There is much technical writing and I am grateful for those
who serve our parish on the various Councils and teams. Thank you so much.
*************************
We can be very proud of our Day School Choir. Many of them traveled to Rome for quinquennial meeting of
the Pueri Cantores youth choirs from around the world who sing for our Holy Father and celebrate Mass with him
in St. Peter’s Basilica.
Our students sang a concert at St. Eustace Church with another school choir from Ann Arbor, MI. Our first
night there we celebrated at the church of St. Peter in Chains. All the English speaking choirs sang at Mass in the
cathedral church of Rome, St. John Lateran. It was beautiful.
In his homily Pope Francis said, And yet this swollen torrent [the many terrible events of violence, etc.) is
powerless before the ocean of mercy which floods our world. All of us are called to immerse ourselves in this
ocean, to let ourselves be reborn, to overcome the indifference which blocks solidarity, and to leave behind the
false neutrality which prevents sharing. The grace of Christ, which brings our hope of salvation to fulfilment, leads
us to cooperate with him in building an ever more just and fraternal world, a world in which every person and every creature can dwell in peace, in the harmony of God’s original creation. Kudos to our choir and all who made the
trip possible.
Pax et bonum,

service, spiritual formation, and social events in support
of one another, our community, and the Church as a
whole. Together, we take up the call of bringing Christ
into the world!

Spring Study – “FREE” Leslie Hansen will lead us in a
study called FREE—Join us as we explore how to live a
life of true freedom. We will use the Ignatian Exam as a
guide to help us discern God’s will for our lives and to
identify disordered attachments that hinder our ability to
see and follow God’s will. If our choices grow out of
God’s will for our lives, we will become who God
planned us to be. We will be free. “Now the Lord is the
Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is
freedom.” 1 Cor. 3:17.

parish family was a sign of God's love to 44 families and single persons, including 96 children, providing rental
assistance of $7,771, utility assistance of $728, $150 in furniture, and $231 in traveler's aid which includes the donation
of a bicycle to assist a needy college student. Also a special Christmas donation provided $1,600 in Walmart gift cards

SURPRISES
Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The
scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children
obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest
up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to
eternal, heavenly glory.
Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event
knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises.
For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no
direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus.
We may think that the point of today’s familiar story
of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus,
our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however,
needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have
faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not necessarily
our own—will be surprised for the better. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Although our tradition carries a long memory of marriage as a sacrament, it may surprise you to learn that for
nearly eleven centuries, there was no single wedding ceremony approved for use in the Church. While we have evidence of priests blessing marriages as early as the second
century, in the early period church leaders relied on civil
authorities to manage marriage for everyone in society. In
most cases, society yielded its authority to sanction marriage to the male heads of households.
From ancient times, marriage had been a family affair,
managed by the father of the family, who acted as priest
and guardian of family tradition. Each head wanted to keep
the family gods alive, and so he would arrange for brides
for his sons, paying a “bride price” as compensation for the
loss of a skilled household worker. As creepy as that
sounds, it was a step up from the kidnapping practice of
earlier years. Even after the kidnapping raids stopped, the
customs remained. Every wedding contained the ritualized
kidnapping of the bride, the husband abducting his bride
from the festivities, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father’s gods from following her into her new religion. There, he fed her a piece of “sacred cake,” initiating
her into a new way of life. It’s fascinating to see how customs endure, long after we have completely rejected the
values and attitudes they originally expressed!

No tengas miedo».
