THE WAY OF
THE DRAGON
D
ragons are set to feature prominently this month in
the two Malaysian states of Penang and Sarawak
with a Chingay procession and a Dragon Boat
Regatta.
A Chingay procession is held in celebration of the birthdays
of Chinese deities or the procession of the Goddess of
Mercy (Guanyin). The earliest known procession in Malaysia
was held more than 100 years ago.
Chingay is viewed as street art where performers balance
giant flags that range from 7 to 10metres in height and
weigh about 27 kg. Today, Chingay is not only performed
by the Chinese, but the art has

S
uccessfully attracted
Malays and Indians too
to become a unique
multiracial performance. The
popularity of Chingay in Penang
has made it one of the very
impressive cultural landmarks
as well as an important tourist
attraction.
The Sarawak International
Dragon Boat Regatta has an
interesting history which dates
back to 1872 during Rajah
Brooke’s rule. The Sarawak River
was then the main gateway into
Kuching, especially for trading of
essential goods, communication
and protection from potential
enemies. A regatta was held
annually as a recreational sport
on the river which winds through
beautiful landscape and passes
by colonial buildings like the Fort
Margherita, the Square Tower
and the Astana.
Many stories also surround the
Sarawak River, one of which is
the famous Brooke Swim which
will be revived during this year’s
Regatta as a side event.
25 teams from Brunei, Hong
Kong, Indonesia, Japan,
Philippines, Singapore and
Chinese Taipei have confirmed
their participation in the Regatta.
Local teams taking part are from
Sabah, Kuala Lumpur, Penang,
Kedah and Sarawak who will
be vying for the coveted “Raja
Sungai” or King of the River title in
longboats carrying from seven to
30 paddlers, depending on the
category they are contesting in.
The Sarawak International
Dragon Boat Regatta offers a
total prize money of RM50,000
while the top four placed teams
will receive trophies and medals.
Apart from the Dragon Boat
races, local food and handicraft
exhibitions will also be held.
Other side events include
4 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE SEPTEMBER/OKTOBER 2015
a mooncake festival, a
duck catching competition,
tug-of-war, canoeing and
performances by local singers.
A new feature this year will be
the Doughnut Boat where boats
shaped like doughnuts with a
seating capacity of 12 people
will be introduced for the public
to enjoy.
In Chinese belief, the dragon
is the highest-ranking animal in
the animal hierarchy, strongly
associated at one time with
the emperor and hence power
and majesty, wealth and
wisdom. Its origins are vague,
but tradition has it that the
dragon is composed of nine
different animals. It is the only
mythological animal of the
12 animals that represent the
Chinese calendar. The next Year
of the Dragon is 2024. -By K. Talha

SAFETY TIPS
DEFENSIVE
DRIVING
The standard Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle Operations
define defensive driving as “driving to save lives, time and
money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions
of others.”
Defensive driving is aimed at reducing the risk of collision by
anticipating dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions
or the mistakes of others. This can be achieved through
adherence to a variety of general rules, as well as the practice
of specific driving techniques.
TIPS
STAY FOCUSED ON DEFENSIVE DRIVING
•
•
•
Keep 100% of your attention on driving at all times.
Always be aware of what others around you are doing and expect the unexpected.
Don’t use a mobile phone or any other electronic device while driving.
PRACTICE SAFE DRIVING TIPS
• Build time into your trip schedule to stop for food, rest breaks and phone calls or other business.
• Adjust your seat and mirrors before putting the car in gear.
PRIORITIZE CAR SAFETY
• Secure cargo that may move around while the vehicle is in motion. Don’t attempt to retrieve items that fall to the floor.
• Have items needed within easy reach, such as toll fees and toll cards.
SLOW DOWN
• Don’t speed − it gives you less time to react and increases the severity of an accident.
THINK SAFETY
• Always wear your seat belt and drive sober and drug-free.

SAFETY TIPS
FUEL
SAVINGTIPS
DRIVE MORE EFFICIENTLY
• Drive Sensibly :Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration
and braking) wastes fuel. It can lower your fuel mileage by 33
percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town.
• Observe the Speed Limit : While each vehicle reaches its
optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of
speeds), fuel mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds
above 80 km/h. Observing the speed limit is also safer.
• Remove Excess Weight: Avoid keeping unnecessary items in
your vehicle, especially heavy ones.
• Avoid Excessive Idling: Idling can use a quarter to a half gallon
of fuel per hour, depending on engine size and air conditioner
(AC) use. Turn off your engine when your vehicle is parked.
• Use Cruise Control: Using cruise control on the highway
helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will
save fuel.
KEEPING YOUR CAR IN SHAPE
• KeepYour Engine Properly Tuned: Fixing a car that is noticeably
out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its
fuel mileage by an average of 4 percent, though results vary
based on the kind of repair and how well it is done.
• Keep Tyres Properly Inflated: You can improve your fuel
mileage by up to 3.3 percent by keeping your tyres inflated
to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tyres can lower fuel
mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of
all four tyres. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.

SMART TIPS
Exercise!
10 Senaman Mudah
Di Rumah Tanpa
Alatan
1. Berjalan
Jika cuaca elok, berjalan di sekitar rumah sambil lihat
pemandangan sekeliling memang menyeronokkan. Jika
lagi). Ini boleh menguatkan kaki dan lutut. Jika tiada tangga?
Berjalan sahaja keliling dalam rumah, walaupun kurang
seronok, tetapi masih berkesan
2. Mood uplifting
6. Jogging in place/ joging setempat
pemegang) pencuci lantai cecair saiz besar.
8. Menari
Senaman yang menyeronokkan. Bahkan boleh meningkatkan emosi/ semangat juga.
9. Squats
10. Step exercises/ Berjalan setempat
Senaman naik turun satu anak tangga. Boleh kuatkan otot kaki. Pastikan jangan tergelincir semasa melakukan senanam ini. Jika rasa
kurang seronok, buatlah apa-apa gaya aerobik juga, asalkan naik turun terjadi.

SMART TIPS
Penggunaan Petrol
membrek sesuka hati.
•
•
•
•
•
•
Kurangkan berat/bebanan kereta.
Perhatikan dalam but kereta anda, mungkin
Penambahan
berat sebanyak 50 kilogram meningkatkan penggunaan minyak sebanyak 2 peratus).
Tayar diisi dengan tekanan angin yang betul.Tekanan angin mesti betul.Tekanan angin yang tidak mengikut
spesifikasi mengakibatkan penggunaan minyak bertambah 5 peratus. Carta berat dan tekanan angin
biasanya terpapar di tempat mengisi angin di mana-mana stesen minyak. Jangan biarkan tayar lembik
Jangan brek
mengejut.
Rancang perjalanan. Jangan sekali-kali
memulakan perjalanan tanpa terlebih
dulu merancang jalan mana untuk kita
ikut menuju ke destinasi. Ini termasuklah
rancangan perjalanan untuk mengelakkan
kesesakan lalu lintas dan pilihan jalan yang
tidak banyak lampu traffic, banyak bonggol
(menyebabkan anda perlu kerap menukar
gear yang akhirnya tidak membantu usaha
penjimatan petrol kereta anda.
Panaskan enjin kereta sebelum memulakan
perjalanan. Enjin dalam keadaan panas
(panas yang normal) juga boleh membantu
meningkatkan perbatuan (lebih kilometer) dan
prestasi kereta anda. Terutamanya pada waktu
pagi, jika boleh, biarkan enjin panas sebelum
memulakan perjalanan.

SMART TIPS
First-Time Buyers
THE CAR MUST BE AFFORDABLE
Regardless of whether one is going for a brand new or a pre-owned car, the down payment and monthly installments should
stay within the budget.
THE BUYER NEEDS TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTS
It is always advisable for him to do extensive research about the car that he is interested in.
THE CAR CHOSEN SHOULD BE A GOOD BALANCE BETWEEN WANTS AND NEEDS
Make sure it is not be too expensive to maintain. Generally, Malaysian-made cars and Asian cars are much more economical than
continental models.
CHOOSE A CAR THAT MEETS YOUR CURRENT REQUIREMENTS
For short daily commutes, a smaller car with excellent fuel consumption would be most ideal. For over long distances, comfort
and safety, along with efficient fuel consumption should be the main considerations.
VISIT THE MANUFACTURERS’ SHOWROOMS
Take the cars that they are interested in for a test drive. Friendly sales personnel are always available to assist potential customers.
GET BROCHURES FOR DIFFERENT CARS
Compare their specifications to see if the features are up to your expectations.
WHEN THE FINAL DECISION HAS BEEN MADE
A buyer must ensure that all the required documents, such as three months’ pay slip and a bank statement, and any other relevant
documents are available for the purchase to proceed.
THE MAINTAINANCE PROCESS
An owner must make sure that the car is sent for servicing on
time, and that it runs on genuine spare parts to ensure that
the warranty package does not become null and void,
and it is in good condition at all times.
