We think sometimes that poverty is
only being hungry, naked and
homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is
the greatest poverty. We must start
in our own homes to remedy this
kind of poverty.

Bidding Prayers
Please consider writing Bidding Prayers and
making an important contribution to the spiritual life of the Parish. Bidding Prayers are
the prayers of the faithful ie you and I. It
really is not an onerous task and in many
ways rather satisfying. There is no need for
a great many – four or five is sufficient and
there are sheets to help you at the back of
church along with the list on which to sign
your name.
It is a particularly good way for a family to
make a contribution to the liturgy and most
importantly it would be delightful to hear the
thoughts of others and not the same group
of people.
If you prefer to remain anonymous please
put a ‘squiggle’ against the month of your
choice but do ensure you let Fr Pius know
that you are going to write them. Please
give this gift to parishioners some
thought. Thank you in advance and

I
BLURRED VISION
n the story of Lazarus
and Dives (the Latin
name for the Rich Man) it’s
interesting to note that
while on earth Dives never
actually saw Lazarus. He
lay starving and sore-ridden
on Dives’ doorstep but
Dives only clapped eyes on
him when they were both
dead. Presumably
day after day as Dives
went in and out, organizing his parties
for his friends, going
to buy his purple
clothes (equivalent to
our designer labels
today) he never
stopped to see Lazarus lying there.
N
ot much has
changed even
today. Wealth can blind us
to the needs of those
around us. We end up moving in different circles and
become insensitive to
what’s actually going on for
others. Rich countries become anaesthetised to the
pain of starving nations.
The leaders of some nations live a rich lifestyle
while their citizens live in a
dustbowl. Chief executives
award themselves massive
annual bonuses while hundreds in their company lose
their jobs in production
shake-ups. Inside traders
on the stock exchange
make a killing while shareholders lose their savings.
Civil servants are more
bothered about their pensions than serving the public. Electricians charge exorbitant call-out fees when
they have only travelled a
couple of miles. Church
officials hide behind canon
law, preferring sacrifice to
mercy. Sportsmen and
women get so caught up in
winning that they will use
any means to come out on
top. Drug dealers are so
stupefied by the money
they make that they never
stop to think of the effect
their drugs have on the users. The list is endless. We
become blind to what we
are really doing.
B
ut before we
start criticising
others let’s stop and
examine ourselves.
Where are the Lazaruses in our lives? Do
we wander around
blindly accepting
what’s on our doorstep
or are we moved to
see beyond our own
concerns? Have we
become deadened to
the consequences of
the way we act?
Y
ou can’t help feeling
sorry for Dives. He
wasn’t a “bad” person; he
just never opened his eyes
wide enough. He never
realised what was happening on his own doorstep
because his wealth blinded
him to it all. His selfcontained satisfaction prevented him from reaching
out. What’s your excuse?
Schools Day 28th September
Some help would be gratefully
received after the mass today/
Sunday, to move the benches.
It not so much strength that is needed so
much as numbers of persons which
makes the whole process so much more
efficient and effective. The more persons we have the less time anyone will
be held up. Thank you.

day – either helping to send children to
the various activities or over in the hall
with the refreshments for staff then

event to experience and witness.

Cafod Harvest Fast Day
Collection on
1/2 October
Cafod Harvest Day is Friday 30th September, so envelopes will be distributed
this weekend and collected after Mass
on 1st and 2nd October. This Fast Day
we are focussing 32 year old Nicanora
from Bolivia, and her journey from poverty to abundance. Thank you for your on
going support that enables people to
make the journey to a better life for themselves and their families.

The Diocesan Safeguarding Commission
oversees the safeguarding work of the Diocese. Its core membership consists of independent professionals with expertise and
experience in the area of Safeguarding.
The Commission meets four times a year to
fulfil its regulatory, advisory and supportive
