14th Sunday Ordinary Time C 3rd July 2016
Responsorial Psalm:
Cry out with joy to God
all the earth.
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, alleluia!
I call you friends , says the Lord,
because I have made known to
you everything I have learnt
from my Father
Alleluia!
And so I saw that God rejoices that
he is our father, and God rejoices
that he is our mother.
(Julian of Norwich)
God loves each of us as if
there were only one of us.
(Augustine)
God is a child who amuses himself,
going from laughing to crying for no
reason, each day reinventing the world
to the chagrin of hair-splitters, pedants,
and preachers, who try to teach
God his job as Creator.
(Elie Faure)

Give me confidence in the depths of
danger. Give me hope when I am surrounded by fear. Still my worries, calm
the anxieties pressing in on me from the
world I live in.
Lord Jesus, give me your peace. Reassure me that you are with me when I
seem alone. Ease my doubting, as you
did Thomas's. Lord Jesus, give me your
peace.
Guide my searching for peace,so that I
may not seek it where it is not to be
found, but I may seek it in you.Lord Jesus, live in me and give me your
peace.Amen.

FAITH IN FOCUS:
THE MOTHER
I
n an attempt to shock,
someone once said
that all we know about God
is that she is black. The
one sure thing we can say
about God is that he/she
does not fit into a box. God
is greater than anything we
can ever imagine or understand.
OF ALL
inine attributes remind us we can’t solve the problem
that there is no part of our ourselves and need a bit of
lives that God is absent divine help.

much too big to fit in
Living as we do in a scientific age, we tend to think
that we can dissect everything and find out exactly
In today’s liturgy Isaiah
uses feminine imagery to
describe how God deals
with the chosen people.
And so God says that
“she” will be like a mother
to us, consoling us when
we are sad, fondling us in
her lap and suckling us at
her breasts when we are
in need of sustenance.
O
f course, God is just
God. God’s not a
man; not a woman; not
something in between. God
transcends, goes beyond,
gender. But thinking of God
in terms of a mother as well
as a father allows us to
glimpse God in an entirely
new light. It means that we
can suddenly appreciate
the tender, life-giving, nursing side to God. These fem-

how it works before putting
it back together again.
Then we can use it when
we want it. This approach
sometimes affects the way
people think about God.
The have a Jack-in-the Box
God that can be kept with
the lid shut and brought out
by undoing the catch when

the box and much too clever to be tamed by our attempts to tie him/her down
to neat categories. Anyone
who has ever read the
scriptures will know that
time and time again God
acts in precisely the opposite way to how we humans think he/she should.
God picks the very people
whom everyone else discounts on the first ballot;
God grants victory to the
underdog; God confounds
the proud with the humility
of the meek, and turns up
in circumstances where
we wouldn’t expect God to
be.
T
oday Isaiah reminds
us that God is bigger
than us and we cannot pretend to have God taped. If
we let our minds be
stretched by thinking of
God as both a mother and
a father then we get twice
as much God for our money!
LSU Sisters
Cafod Emergency
Ethiopia Food Crisis Appeal.
This week we say farewell to our
Sisters from Cameroon.
They have been with us for the month of
June, following a course in preparation
for taking their final vows at the end of
July. They very much appreciated the
welcome they received in the parish and
enjoyed being involved in the parish activities.
A crippling drought in Ethiopia is affecting over
10 million people. Extreme weather shifts, due
to El Nino have caused severe droughts, leaving millions in need of emergency food.
400,000 children are already suffering from
malnutrition. Action is needed now to prevent a
far more terrible crisis.
The ceremony of final profession is on
the 30th July. Please keep Sisters Sophie, Marie Odette, Veronique and
Michele in your prayer.
